I have quite a few, though likely they don't count as hobbies, but I"ll post them anyway and if anyone doesn't like it tough.

Web surfing, reading some of the comic book collected books I have, listening to pod casts,  sorta pc video games (though taking a vacation from those),

I like to glowstring. If you don't know what it is, look it up on YouTube. There are quite a few videos there.

Also forgot to add reading some science magazines.

Hmm, I guess I have quite a few, actually. :p

I'm an amateur digital music guy. :p
I enjoy both composing new music and reproducing/rearranging existing music, such as that from videogame or movie soundtracks, some standalone songs and even some LBT stuff.  I have uploaded a few MIDI files to the Videogame Music Archive (http://www.vgmusic.com) in the past but I haven't completed anything for them in a few years now.  I enjoy MIDI stuff and have always been fascinated by the ability of a single person to "pretend" to be as large of an ensemble as he/she wishes. ;)  I've always found the results to be quite interesting and fulfilling.

Since my work with pure MIDI files, I have moved into the .wav and .mp3 realm, working with fairly high-end softare and virtual instrument technology.  Very demanding on a computer but the results are worth it.  Very satisfying! :D

I'd like to get a bit more into live music performance as well but I lack the ability on any musical instrument.  I can play piano and trumpet a little bit, but not well enough to do anything especially interesting.  I'm working on teaching myself piano and I haven't had access to a trumpet in 4 years so I'm probably Very rusty on that! :p

I've thought about trying to write up sheet music for the Land Before Time soundtrack, as none exists on the market, with the exception of If We Hold On Together, for piano, guitar and vocal.  I know there wouldn't be much of an audience for such a product but I still think it would be a nice keepsake to have. :)  It would be a huge undertaking though, so I've been putting it off.

I also enjoy programming.  I have some experience with C, C++, Java, the Blitz3d BASIC language (thanks Aves!), and a small amount of experience programming industrial logic controllers and distributed control sytems (from college).  I've been casually attempting to develop a 3d game lately but I'm having a few issues here and there, especially with finding time to work on it.

I enjoy casual video games once in awhile, especially with friends.  I play video games on occasion by myself but I usually find something else to do.  As for the types of games: usually party games (Mario party, Smash Bros, DDR, Rock Band, stuff like that), shooters, racing games...anything I can pick up for a short time without needing to donate huge chunks of time to, which is why I dropped World of Warcraft.  I just couldn't justify giving it that much time.  I used to play WoW though. :P:

Aside from computer stuff, I've always been a fan of casual sports:
Ultimate Frisbee, laser tag, badminton, tennis, bowling, volleyball, squash, soccer, ping pong, foosball (not football...foosball :P:)...whatever!  Unfortunately, so many of these sports require getting people together to play, which so rarely happens. :(  I'm not part of any league or team, nor am I especially good at any of those sports (well, I used to be alright at ping pong) but I still enjoy the atmosphere of a good game. :wow

Let's see, what else do I like to do...
Like Petrie, I like collecting soundtracks, though it's not really in the budget right now to pick up everything I'd like.  I'm putting off buying music while I save for other things I'd like to pick up.

I like designing, planning things such as the ultimate, yet economical, bachelor home. :p  I also enjoy large technological appliances - TVs, sound systems, etc.  I like mucking around with them.

Update: I now have a Scarab. Cost me ~$300, but I think it was worth it. I just scattered my unique clix around it. Makes a better display place than the small area I was using before, and the Scarab's too big to fit on anything I have that is not being used...It has four combat dials. This'll be brutal in a match, I think.

Post by: The Friendly Sharptooth on December 28, 2008, 04:04:41 AM
I like to collect any sort of item related to The Land Before Time of course, and one of my anime collections. I collect anime things for: Dot Hack, Digimon, Pokemon, One Piece, InuYasha, Mega Man Battle Network, Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z, and Naruto. Most of the stuff is just movies, video games, and graphic novels though. I also have collections I work on: Sonic the Hedgehog, Spyro the Dragon, and The Legend of Zelda. And as they are for collection, most movies and video games I get for those categories I leave sealed to make the collection a bit more valuable. Then we have a very common thing: coin collecting. 1964 or older, any bicentennial, worth .50 or more, or from another country. Right now I have a lot from Canada, Africa, Japan, some from Italy, and one Jewish coin. I like collecting any thing associated with my religion as well, though, so far, it's mostly just a lot of books. And finally, my most enjoyed thing to collect: grammar skills. I am constantly reading books on proper North American grammar and they are very fun to read. Words and sentence structures are a key to writing efficiently. And those books have some very unsused yet important facts to assisst in writing and speaking interestingly yet properly.

I know we get along these days with the grammar that everyone has, but all you MMORPG fans out there will understand this metaphor. You go to a new town and buy strong weapons that everyone uses- thye're very common yet still useful. Then you go into a dungeon filled with rare items (yay)! where you find a rare weapon that almost nobody has that is very potent in battle. You leave the dungeon and meet your party members and you go to fight some boss. The others pull out their "typical" weapons, but now it's your turn to draw. Are you going to just stick with your standard weapon just because it always works and all your friends use them, or will you pull out your rare weapon that the others aren't used to and totally wail on the enemy? Pretty obvious choice to me. What I am trying to say is, just because the standard grammar that everyone uses works all right, why not search for uncommon grammar rules to really be impressive in the world? So that's what I've been doing. You may think you know grammar completely, but how many of you know this without looking it up? It's something I read in my most recent grammar book I borrowed. You all know about contractions. It's- it is. Won't- will not. But how many others here know what o'clock is a contraction for? My point proven. It's always such an eye opener to say the whole thing in a conversation. Later!

It is kind of a "double edged sword" (picking up the example you gave). It is of course a good thing to have a the ability to express oneself on very high levels, but it should also come along with the sense of when very complex structures or terms are in place and when they are actually impressing anyone, or when they appear to others as a kind of signal for a "better than you" kind of attitude that is not going to impress anyone and that may often be labeled with some justification as immature.
Some scientists and philosophers struggle as hard as they can to write down their ideas but not really sharing them with anyone but a very small "elite" capable of understanding the terms they use. When there are two words for exactly the same thing (I am not ignoring that different words for the same thing may differ very much in connotation; which must not be ignored when choosing the right words) and one of the words is far-spread and well known while the other is unknown to many, it is often the better choice to pick the word which people will understand.
There are different schools of linguistics which can be roughly divided into the "prescriptionist" and the "descriptionist" schools of linguistics. The aim of the "prescriptionists" is to put down one set of grammar rules and words as the one and only proper way to use a language.
The "descriptionists" observe language the way it is used no matter what is written in grammar books.
Personally I would ascribe myself more to the descriptionist view, because it gives credit to the fact that languages are changing. New words and constructions are appearing and disappearing and many languages have uncountable dialects and accents which can enrich the flavor of a language quite a bit.

How bitter it was for me to learn that. It was always so confusing when I'd always look for the rarest words that meant what I wanted to express and my essays would be full of them. I'd always read mine aloud, and eveyone would get so annoyed at how they couldn't follow it at all. Any rare ways of speaking, as it would seem, should be used with extreme discretion unfortunately. I wanted utmost originality when I wrote but it does seem to really bother most people. I guess I can't impress someone who doesn't understand me, eh? But still, I do find it pleseant to learn more about that stuff, even if just for the fun of it and not to be able to use it much at all in my writing or conversation. Thank you for the descriptive explanation.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with learning more about it; nothing wrong at all. I think at times I too am difficult to understand for the language I'm using, so we are going through the same learning process. Sometimes very high style of language is in place. I guess one thing that kind of "cured" me was reading parts of Hans Jonas' "The Imperative of Responsibility". The man just used a language that was almost impossible to understand (I do not know though if the English translation is as inscrutable).
I am not suggesting any crude language (except as a stylistic mean in fiction), but one that can be well understood. There are moments where strong words are needed to stress the importance of a point which might otherwise get lost in pretty words, but to strong words can also destroy the message of what is being said.

I used to collect, still do sometimes if I see a nice one.  Keyrings.  I have many from different countries, one of my favourites is a Panda from when we went to Hong Kong.

I also collect The Lion King merchandise when I'm able to.  So hopefully during the Easter holidays when we go to England, I'll be able to get some more.

I used to collect also, dinosaurs and models of cars but my Mum threw them away when we moved to Switzerland the first time.

I guess my biggest and greatest hobby is chatting online.

I love chatting with different people around the world. For me, it's easier to converse with millions of users on the WWW then speak with a big group of people that's staring at you.... forcing you to respond to them if they ask you a question or if you need to give a speech to them....

What I HOPE is that my chatting on forums will encourage me and inspire me to do what I used to do by myself with no one to look and respond to...writing stories or essays for school. :p

I can't wait until my senior year, when I get to write that wonderful thesis!!! YAY! (Not)
Actually I don't think I would find it that much, but I may also. :p

So, WRITING in general, but mostly chatting online is my greatest hobby for me.

I think I got a new hobby in gardening.  My family had these gardens that one tended to for almost a decade, and only a few months ago we started growing stuff again.  I was watching a tomato plant that sprung like a weed, and we got lots of good tomatoes from it.  Now I'm trying to get our raised garden started again, and we'll be planting more trees as well.

I'm getting back into jewelry making again.  Over the past 3 months, my total jewelry tally is:  5 rings, 4 pendants, & 18 pairs of earrings.

Meanwhile, my Kohlrabi vegetables are growing nicely.  I'll probably give them another month or two before I might be able to harvest them.

Gardening Update:  At the moment, over half of my kohlrabi are ready for harvesting, but I have yet to find a decent recipe to cook them with.  Also, I now have planted herbs (chives, cilantro, dill, & peppermint) and a thornless blackberry bush!

I agree it can be. Many words were changed in mine to make them more original, not mention having to remember them. That's why I wrote all the words and the translations into my language. Very tedious

I collect dice. Not just the six-sided ones, but ones that are used in tabletop RPGs. I have all kinds. The one that keeps escaping me, though, is the hundred-sided dice.

Oh man, I have quite a few:

Drawing- Would come naturally, since I'm doing A-level course in art, and aspire to be an animator. Pretty much solely cartoon characters, fanart, that kinda stuff.

Animating- Mostly stop-motion and pixelation (animating inanimate objects), but I'm thinking about trying out hand-drawn animation. Only problem is the startup costs are monstrous. You need the cels, the backgrounds, the drawing boards, x-sheets, lightboxes, the cameras, the software, etc etc.

Ninjutsu- I go to a weekly class, where they mainly teach the combat half, rather than the strategy or the lifestyle. But it's fine, because I got a tonn of books on the subject of Ninjutsu, and they all have sections on strategy. I'm a big ninja enthusiast, but I only hold a 9th kyu greenbelt in the art, which is equivalent to a yellow belt.

Warhammer- Currently collect a chaos daemons 40k army. I'm mostly into the collecting, modelling and painting, but I can hold my own in battle. Plus, chaos daemons are just so interesting, in that they have an exception to pretty much every basic rule of the game.

Roleplaying- Mostly live-action variety. I run a small group of foamfighters (Combat games, using foam-rubber weapons of our own construction), using the Dagorhir system. I hope that once I'm 18, we can apply to become an official chapter.

Dr Steel's Toy Soldier Army- I am a proud soldier in the army, and a big fan of the doc's work, be it his propaganda, his message, or his kick-ass music (sort of a blend of jazz, folk, rap and industrial metal). I'm off to my first invasion tomorrow, in fact!

I'm also into alot of occult stuff, but I won't go into too much detail, lest I incite an overly intense debate.

Oh, and I self-teach myself drumming. You can check out an example on my Youtube channel.

Temporary hobby: After moving out on my own, and gaining access to my old VHS tapes, I discovered that a portion of them - roughly a third - were in a box that had somehow gotten wet, creating a mold source, and many of the tapes in that box were affected, some more, some less.  Not being one to want to damage my VHS/DVD combo player with mold, and also affect the rest of my library, I have taken it upon myself to clean all 39 affected tapes, with warm soapy water, and then again with just warm water, carefully.  I got some tips online, and am doing it with a test tape.  ....It's going to take a long time, but I have plenty of patience for this kind of thing.  Then maybe I can transfer my collection to DVD, like I've been wanting to for years...

My main hobby is VHS collecting (been collecting them since 2009), and just this week I purchased my 1100th VHS tape for the collection. My wall of video tapes really is something to behold. You can never say 'there's nothing to watch' when you are in my house!

It's a particularly interesting hobby for a film lover like me because there are all sorts of obscure stuff you will find on VHS that turn out to be great despite no-one knowing about them.

My hobbies are playing music and listening to it as well. I sing and play guitar. I was also in choir throughout high school and 2 semesters in college.

Another hobby I have, although I never get to do it anymore :cry , is traveling. I've only been out of the United Stated once, and that was to the Bahamas and I hated it! :anger last real vacation I had was when I went to Maine to visit my relatives. I love flying on airplanes. Places in America I want to visit: Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City (even though I've been there before I wanna go again <3), Boston, Chicago, Memphis, Nashville. Places OUTSIDE America I want to visit: The UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Greece, Australia.

I also love fitness. I exercise regularly; weightlifting and running are my 2 favorite things to do. Exercise has also turned me into a really big nutrition need xD  :smile I remember I lost 20 pounds after cutting soda out of my diet, and that's how that started.

Edit: I also love clothes shopping. <3

Very true.  Only do it if it is fun.  That is the key.

The piano isn't for everyone.  You may like another type of instrument, if you are interested in playing a musical instrument.

I wish I could play the piano. I tried but my fingers were too short, and I found it difficult to press keys that were right next to each other. Add to that my poor finger dexterity, playing the piano did not go well.

Cooking, specifically baking desserts, has become a hobby of mine recently. I've also picked up physical fitness as a hobby again after being sedentary for several months.
