Title: LBT screenshot collection
Post by: Ducky123 on June 20, 2018, 12:25:14 PM
Well, here's an idea for a project if anyone is down to it helping me with it.

Mostly for artistic purposes, I sure would find it useful to have a substantial and well organized gallery of screenshots a few clicks away. It just isn't fun to skim through 10 movies before you find that one pose you're looking for you see? :wacko

Open questions right now are
Where to upload (does the forum actually allow multiple (like... 100+) pictures in one post? Admins?)
How to categorize the screencaps (e.g. Character/ mood, pose, ??? ; also, in addition, sort according to the movie/episode they appear in?)

Also, I'd kinda need a program that automatically saves a picture to my computer if I screenshot something, otherwise it's gonna take ages.  :sducky

What do you think? I can do the project alone if needed over my summer holidays but I'll need a good screencap program and a good option to make a gallery that is not one of those dreaded pic-hosting sites :P

I think the main issue here is that there is no organization, just one big list. The main purpose of this project is to be easily able to filter through images to narrow down to a particular character or expression. I would honestly find it easier to look for a scene in a movie then sift through 10,000 images.

The most ideal situation would be to use the images on the wiki but have some sort of database-esque setup where each picture could have several attributes (character, expression, etc) that we could sort through but I'm not sure if I would have the programming knowledge to do it, if it's possible to do on the wiki in the first place.

This is a good idea though and I would be willing to give you a hand with it. :smile

^ I agree with Flathead. I typically go to animationscreencaps.com (formerly Disney Screencaps) or go through my computer or Postimg gallery when I want to find a screencap. Also, Rhombus told me that they have 10GB of storage on the forum, so this gallery might have to not be internally-hosted on GOF. Accordingly, I'd suggest doing that on the wiki or hosting them externally. And yes, I'll gladly help the best that I can.

Well, I'll take a look at that Wiki database for sure though I don't think it'll be quite the best choice as for as organization is concerned.

I guess then the GoF mightn't be the first option to look at either.

Animationscreencaps is good but they just made a screencap every so many frames so a lot of critical frames are missing while a lot of boring ones are there :P Besides, a lot of their pictures are frequently down :/

As for the issue how to save screenshots to my computer, that kinda figured itself out haha. Who knew I had a pre-installed program capable of doing so (OneDrive)

Well, I'll take a look at that Wiki database for sure though I don't think it'll be quite the best choice as for as organization is concerned.

Some gallery pages are pretty organized, while others (like the gallery pages for the main characters -_-) are a mess. I should be cleaning them up, but it's just that it would take a really long time at this point, with so many unsorted pictures in each gallery that have bad filenames and visible media players in the picture (thanks LAT for three years of that -_-). Unfortunately doing work on the FANDOM platform or any other MediaWiki site like Wikipedia is difficult to do by youself or even in groups of a few people, and since the LBT wiki doesn't receive a whole lot of new, good editers, it's often really hard for us to get everything done when we have an outside life. I've been an administrator on the LBT wiki for two years now, and I've accomplished multiple goals already, but there's still so much left to do when you're trying to complete an encyclopedia that is about a franchise this jam-packed with content (14 movies, 26 TV series episodes, multiple video games and merchandise is a hell of a lot of information to cover, especially when you consider the huge amounts of characters, locations, songs, people who worked on stuff, etc etc that this franchise has).

I've been pondering this for quite some time now, and I think that a gallery with a filter/tag system would be the best solution. I could imagine that simple and easily understandable tags/filters would make it easier to find what you're looking for. The option to narrow it down to something very specific would be very useful indeed, and in addition to characters and their expressions/poses there could be a possibility to look for landscapes and other locations as well.

I've been looking into possible sites that could host a gallery with a tag system but it hasn't been fruitful at all. I think a site on par with toyhou.se or tumblr would be ideal. The first one is only for creating profiles for your own characters, so it's not even a possibility to make a comprehensive and large LBT gallery there. Tumblr on the other hand could be an option but searching for several tags at once is a bit of a chore and I think it depends on the theme of the blog. I'm very familiar with the site and its coding so maybe I could start testing if it could work as a possible gallery.

Some anime fanart sites I've found over the years (usually called something-booru) use a tag system that lets you search for specific tags, assuming the person who uploaded them did a proper job setting them up. Makes it quite easy to look for references though even with this system it's often hard to find exactly what you're looking for.

I'm pretty sure it's pointless to revive this, I just thought I should mention that such software to host an image gallery of sorts does in fact exist on the internet and (at least in the anime communities) is frequently used.
