Title: Nano's Art Thread
Post by: Nanotyrannus on December 01, 2018, 02:21:26 PM
More or less a revival of a thread from an old, shuttered forum for a dinosaur game that was supposed to be released some time in 2016, but never came out - not everything here is explicitly Land Before Time related, but all art here, unless specified, will at least tie to the theme of extinct life (e.g. dinosaurs).

Starting off with something small and safe:

can't see or open image for some reason. :(

Typed in google search - it returned miniature picture of happy Chomper. Is it your image?

It should be; I realized that this forum allows attachments after I submitted the original post, so here's the picture in the OP in attachment form

That's a rather sweet drawing, Nano! I really like Chomper's joyful expression and there are no major problems here! It's great to see another artist here and I hope to see more stuff from you in the future! :yes

Oh nice! Good to see another member showing off some fanart. I like the happy expression that Chomper has here.

Hope to see some more artwork from you! :DD

Now I can clearly see it, thanks!
Love to see more Chomper arts here.

Wow, it's been a long time since I've put anything here; today should hopefully be the end of that dry spell.

A couple days ago, I capped off my read of something that I have put off for far, far too long; Rhombus's "The Seven Hunters". Suffice to say that it is an extremely high-quality, well-written story - some of my favorite aspects of the story are the descriptions of the different behaviors of all of the creatures in its world - flyers congregating near beaches to reproduce, the threehorns' social structure and especially the longnecks' means of necking for breeding rights (if only for how surprised I was to read depictions of sauropods brutalizing each other by smashing each other with their necks a year or so before Brontosmash became a thing).

Me reading THS ties into this because, today, I'd like to share a little bit of fan art for the story that I started work on during the fourth act, depicting Petrie, based off of the baby Cearadactylus that show up in a shot in the twelfth movie with a nasal crest like that of Tropeognathus (I believe it was the scene where they go after the flyer nest that describes sharptooth flyer Petrie as having a crest), and a "carrion flyer", which I have chosen to depict as an Istiodactylus because I didn't catch much in the text contradicting the idea and because it is the pterosaur I associate the most with scavenging.

Your sharptooth version of Petrie is surprisingly adorable, which is something I never would have expected that from "sharptoothization" fanart! :)petrie It's pretty rare to see artwork of the Gang as carnivores that doesn't purposefully make them look like monsters. (I think this actually is the first example I've seen of such a thing!) Despite those (clearly functional) teeth and claws, the wide eyes and crooked grin make it obvious that this is Petrie, and he looks like he's as ready as ever to squeak out some grammatical errors. :lol

The Istiodactylus is also very well done. I can see that you took some inspiration from vultures' feather patterning and colors, which makes it clear we're looking at a scavenger. I always like to see artists draw LBT versions of species that weren't in the movies, and you did a great job on this one. :smile

Great work on Chomper as well, you sure nailed his posture and facial expression!

Oh these are really good! Petrie's expression carries over very well into his new species change. Also looks like he got a little more buff :p
The carrion flyer also looks good and as Rainbow has mentioned the similarities chosen to that of a vulture help add to its design.
Awesome job with these!  :)petrie

Epic and cute Sharptooth Petrie! I’ve wondered, is Petrie a Pteradon or Pterodactyl?
Great Job Nano! :)

This is great! I completely missed this topic back in 2018. Your Chomper has something very sweet about him. The somewhat jagged edges give him a soft feel (not sure how that makes sense :P )

I have not read TSH, but these characters are very well drawn. The Petrie-sharptooth looks really enthusiastic and the guy on the right looks kinda sick of everything... Or maybe just mellow, who knows ;)  It gives off a vulture-esque feel which is really well done. Nice job!

Well, it's been a good while since I've put anything here; why not make up for the year and a half of absence with something dramatically different from the other two pieces I've put here?

Because the image is a bit big, I've put it behind a little spoiler:

Spoiler: ShowHide
(https://i.ibb.co/w701Vtd/Sharptooth-render-yea.png)

The Sharptooth, in a style I wouldn't be too bothered by if it were utilized by a hypothetical remake; he came out shinier and a little flatter than I'd prefer, but I'm still like how he came out. After six or seven years of working with Blender, this is probably the most impressive thing I've created, for better or worse.

The other side of his face is very distinct from the side of his face that gets most of the spotlight here, but it's on the grotesque side and I've opted to not show it in full.

Inspired by this thread (https://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=17393.0) - I figured it would be fun to translate Stegouros to the series' style, so I whipped up a very basic reference for one; the Spike and Topps graphics are taken from model sheets for the first movie, which can be found here (https://landbeforetime.fandom.com/wiki/File:The_Land_Before_Time_Studio_Model_Sheets_Large_Print_Group_Amblin_Lucasfilm_Don_Bluth,_1988_2.jpg) and here (https://landbeforetime.fandom.com/wiki/File:The_Land_Before_Time_Studio_Model_Sheets_Large_Print_Group_Amblin_Lucasfilm_Don_Bluth,_1988_4.jpg) respectively.

No single just-discovered species of dinosaurs is safe from being integrated into LBT world! :D

Nice work!

Oh this is pretty cool and has been converted to the LBT style well! Certainly a cool tail design (in both real life and in the drawing!)

Nice! You've done a great job converting the Stegouros into LBT style! That is a pretty cool-looking tail they have... don't think I'd want to get in its way though!  :rhett_ohsnap

Is that model created from scratch or is that just a stock T. rex model with some modifications added to it.

I love the Stegouros design! The shapes and colors you used are definitely in-line with typical LBT style, not to mention the little guy just looks cute! :)

Also, I can’t believe that 3D T. rex hasn’t gotten much attention yet, it’s quite impressive! I can see a bit of the damaged eye on the other side of his face—I imagine it took some significant work to make the head asymmetrical! Nice choice adding some feathers to his back, too…it would definitely be interesting to see LBT updated for paleontological accuracy.

EDIT: I also have to mention that I’m impressed by how you credited your sources. Very professionally done!

Pretty much everything on display was made from scratch, though I used Scott Hartman's Stan skeletal (https://www.skeletaldrawing.com/theropods/tyrannosaurus-stan) as a reference when doing the model (I forgot to credit him, whoops - better late than never I suppose).

The facial damage goes a lot further than just the eye; the idea is that, while Littlefoot is responsible for his eye specifically, he's been in a lot of fights with other rexes and, as a result, his face was gnarly even before being partially blinded. If you look at the teeth and gums on his "bad side" that are visible in the shot, you should see what I mean.

Also, don't worry about his tail, it hasn't bothered him in a long time  :ChomperImAwesome

I'm not particularly sure what exactly prompted this, but after capping off Level 3 of a specific Blender tutorial, I felt the urge to throw this together in a couple of minutes.

Overly shiny Sharptooth enjoying coffee and a donut.

Sharptooth here looks pretty harmless.
