Title: Video game music
Post by: vonboy on March 15, 2011, 12:31:25 AM
I listen to a lot of vide game music, it's pretty much the only kind of music I'm interested in. From the beeps and bops of classic 8-bit music to the orchestrated masterpieces of some games today, I love them all!

Here's just a few I love...
Super Mario Galaxy - "Buey Base Galaxy" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsAFpdAgh6A)
Okami - "Ryoshima Plains" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsnJRyTlFb0&feature=related)
Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door - "Crystal Stars" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ibmn_Ok72og)
Earthbound - "You've Come Far Ness" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Lxu8nbARYQ)
pokemon Diamond/Pearl - "Route 209" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2Jibyd9nT8)

Is there any video game music you like?

Burnout 3 Takedown: "Just Tonight" - Jimmy Eat World (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rZVzbdEBBY)
Crazy Taxi: "Middle Children" - Pivit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yVlNJ-IXEQ)
DiRT 2: "There's No Secrets This Year" - Silversun Pickups (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqZHIQp0ok0)
NFS Hot Pursuit 2 [2002]: "Wall of Shame" - Course of Nature (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyqOMGI8QV4)
Kingdom Hearts: "Simple and Clean" - Utada Hikaru (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFapqtp-YjQ)
Kingdom Hearts 2: "Sanctuary" - Utada Hikaru (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OzB5Fmo-Zc)
Gran Turismo 4: "It's All About You" - Dakota Star (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jI_NpFV70Y)
Gran Turismo 2: "My Hero" - Foo Fighters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIiVEsp8WuE)

And a lot more of where those came from. ;)

Dawn of War II Retribution - Imperial Guard Theme III (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqX3uH46Qm8)

A military march that could match or exceed those used by real armies. Though if the Imperial Guard existed it would be a force that is literally millions of times stronger than any army today.

If you liked Assault of the White Dragons, here's another from the same soundtrack and artist, Swords of Fury :) It's done during a play that takes place in game, so it's rather dramatic and conveys the prelude to the sword fight, and the actual sword fight pretty well I think. :)

Dawn of War Main Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFAKECUeew0)
One of my favorite pieces of game music. A dark, gloomy battle cry.

To convey the mood of the game (a battle for a tropical planet, meaning everything to the billions of its inhabitants, nothing to the galaxy-spanning empire which is supposed to take care of it) in better detail:
Ambient In-game 1  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dRm8JahFpo)
There is a sense of hope and mystery in the end.

The following piece conveys the mood of a real time tactical game, very good:
Ambient In-game 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9V2nPXVWvb4)

The arch-enemy is here:
Coming of Chaos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd50QnoI4Fc)

The beauty of Tartarus, the planet in question:
Music acid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqeNlQUzwcw)
Volcano (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=om-CTFBIlLU)

A new day, a new chance for mankind:
Force Commander (http://ww.youtube.com/watch?v=ECMpaEQ0MFU)

Contemplation:

The soundtrack of Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War: Winter Assault.

If you were a composer and had the task of composing a music score for a galaxy-spanning military, with billions of personel, supported by dozens of nuclear powered kilometre-long spaceships, millions of smaller vehicles, with a doctrine that favors utter destruction of the enemy over the survival of their own troops, and fueled by religious zeal, how would the score sound like? Perhaps it would sound like this:
Imperial Guard Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhqWHIq-aZw)
 (only choir and percussion) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNv1ImIa1-4&feature=related)

Struggle on the icy world of Lorn V:
Winter Assault Main Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJ3G1y6pBZk&feature=related)

Forces of Disorder, the unlikely alliance of the forces of Chaos and orks:

msd1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jGf6ROLkNQ)
msd2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dydRN-Dotg)
msd3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GR8MXGja1Q)
msd4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOFvNhfBA8g)
(Chaos ending)
msd5c (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUYtKeGReuI)
(ork ending)
msd5o (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVZlyNFqtV0)

Forces of Order, the short lived alliance of the Guard and the eldar:
mso1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_6XZoZxhQ4)
mso2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUbr7_ZmraE)
mso3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6YPPtIVRJs)
mso4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gL-BZ12qG-E)
(eldar ending)
mso5e (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjZ2Utsnr8Y)
(Guard ending)
mso5i (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39TDOGnLSOA)

The necron, an ancient inorganic civilisation. The forces of Order on Lorn V barely survived against a tiny fragment of their immense, but inactive army.
Necron Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGfgi-WgNcU&feature=related)
(only percussion of the upper track, very militaristic)

I have to agree with you. I realize now that the comment I made about TR: Legend having the best score was influenced by me thinking it was the funnest game of the series, however after playing it so often I found it was too linear. I only like the main theme and the mission summary from TR:L. I like the TRAOD score. It fit quite well with the overall feel of the game. Tomb Raider: Anniversary is my preferred score of the Tomb Raider series, with the original Tomb Raider score and TRAOD in second and Legend in third.

This is my favorite piece of score from Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness from the first level, the Parisian Ghetto. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQzhZXS7alI) It gives the feel of mystery and invokes that kind of atmosphere ingame.

Assault Horizon, as messed up as it was, gave us this epic score. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHGefDh9xWY)

Just got Super Mario 3D world a few days ago, so guess it's time to resurrect this old thread with some good music!

Main Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0M_zZRn-yo)(Basically what plays on the first level.)

Chain-link Charge (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEjNuGiYZhA)(Very jazzy. I like it.  :DD )

Ant Trooper Hill (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cuXi6ioCvg)

Pipeline Lagoon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTM9ZL5hh08) (Very nice beach/tropical theme.)

Bowser's Highway Showdown (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ckBNnZZw6U) (Basically the castle theme. EPIC! :wow )

I get what the creators were talking about when they said they wanted a "big band" feel. It sounds less orchestral than the Galaxy music to me, but it's also very upbeat and just fun sounding.

I've been playing the Lego Movie Videogame a lot recently, and I definitely like some of music in that game.

After a quick search, I found that someone has compiled a playlist for all of the music files, so one link should be enough.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOmoeytvesk...V1tDoDTW0Y6QbCz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOmoeytvesk&list=PLADajjvOG11EVyu_U4V1tDoDTW0Y6QbCz)
Among my favorites in that list are the "main theme" (which is the one in that link), "flatbush rooftops" and "escape from flatbush", all three parts of "the depths", the "relic room" part of "infiltrate the octan tower", the first part of "put the thing on the thing", and "broadcasting news".

Sounds cool, Chronicler. Just saw the movier a few days ago ,and it was really great. Never played the game, but I did play Lego City Undercover, and that one was really good.

Anyway, just listening to some smash bros music over here, waiting for the 3DS version to come out tonight. Some ones that I really like.

Paper Mario Medley (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQ-gcHsLQ7g) Mostly the Rougeport theme portion of this I really like.

REally like the couple remixes from the original N64 game here, but can't seem to find them right now.

meh, should probably just post the whole OST, if anyone wants to look around it for anything they like.

I've started playing the Assassin's Creed games recently.  They've got some pretty badass music.

From Assassin's Creed 2:
Heart (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxEbCGZWF7A)
When Ezio first becomes an assassin.
Venice Rooftops (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9geXVAOFDg)
Plays during races.

Assassin's Creed 3 main theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EevWu6A1LPM)
Perfect theme song for the game.  PS: Assassin's Creed 3 is a very underrated game.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag-

Black Flag has the best soundtrack (of the games I've played in the series so far).  A lot of the music in this game makes me think of Pirates of the Caribbean, which isn't surprising given the game's subject matter.

Black Flag main theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNREuwdJCw0)
An adventures and exciting theme for an adventurous and exciting game.

Stealing a Brig. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FXgEbaNCfA)
This track is badass.
Step 1: gather a crew.
Step 2: steal a brig from the Spanish fleet.
Step 3: survive sailing said brig through a freaking hurricane.
Step 4: Profit.

The British Empire (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4l1U8oTZ7UA)

The tavern songs are simply amazing:
Captain Ward (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iXxr0pwWTI)

The Parting Glass (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RruqZUSWxcE)

The Parting Glass (Anne Bonny's version) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2RQ8YkqeEU)

William Taylor (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRICJFT0KVE)

Here's a Health to the Company (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZRZWnv2v78)

Fathom the Bowl (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n072rTScFUw)

And of course, the sea shanties:

Spanish Ladies (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaD-x779opI)

Drunken Sailor. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9r2b-CSOwDY)
Because what seafaring adventure would be complete without this one? :D

Running Down to Cuba (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-cg1oQJ9zs)
Good luck getting this one out of your head! :D

Randy Dandy Oh (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi24A30X27s)

The Rio Grande (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cY6Fs_HaQ1E)

Assassin's Creed: Rogue

Main Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmlCudR3JPk)
Basically a mix of Ezio's theme and"The British Empire" from Black Flag.

A few of the shanties from Black Flag return, plus some new ones.

New York Girls (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJxdirwdsvA)

And lastly, this one.

Another Assassin's Creed one.

"The Leaving of Liverpool" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJ5dQ3o5ZDw), one of the pub songs in Assassin's Creed Rogue.  The funny thing is that for a series that for the most part tries to be historically accurate, this song is seriously out of place.  The game takes place in the early 1700s but the song mentions California which hadn't been discovered yet.  Also, the song itself dates back to the mid 1800s so it's about 150 years out of place here.  Still an awesome song.

Even though I'm unlikely to ever get a chance to play Lego Dimensions, I have been watching a lot of videos of other people playing that game, and the music is certainly one of the many details of this game that I really like. Keep in mind, this game combines a lot of franchises (such as DC Comics, Lord of the Rings, the Lego Movie, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Doctor Who, the Simpsons, and many more) so there's definitely quite a lot of variety when it comes to music.

Here's one I want to share. Many final stages, levels or rounds have epic final music. It makes you feel you're almost near the end, you progressed a lot, you're about face the true evil leader, you're about to save the world and there's no turing back since you've come so far.

The 1997 scrolling shoot-em-up Taito game, G Darius, has an awesome soundtrack, probably one of the best. The music does more than prove to be awesome, they fit all the stages very well, and they even tell a story without the use of dialouge. It's amazing

The final stage music in this game is an epic masterpiece. I remember playing G Darius on Taito Legends 2 for PS2, got to the final stage of the game while listening to it for the first time, not only it was awesome, it also blew me away for how incredible it is. I felt like I was almost there, kept wondering who the boss will be while shooting away at enemies, and the music fit the stage flawlessly. The game was absolutely awe-inspiring for it's time and still is today.

It needs to be listened and heard to be believed.

These styles of games tend to have 2 main types of themes for their final levels. One is a more of a menacing 'oh god what am I getting myself into' type and the other is more of a encouraging 'you've almost made it, here's the final push' to pump you up. As you described it feels like the latter in this case. Cool stuff

It's been years since I've played World of Warcraft but I still love the music of the game. One that surprised me was the theme played in Grim Batol (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpTL5nTPwjo), one of the former and major Dwarven cities. The beginning of the song starts triumphantly but quickly dies down to a slow and more somber tone to reflect it's current status.

Indeed, WoW has the best soundtrack of any game I've heard! :)  The Grim Batol theme is certainly one of the most impressive songs in the game but there are countless others. I could list dozens of amazing songs in WoW but the Canticle of Sacrifice (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahix7xMQSSw) and Call to Arms (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNVomngq-Qc) are certainly some of the very best!  :wow

Oh wow that's interesting! I still keep somewhat up to date on WoW's story so I knew about Varian's death in Legion but I didn't know that they had a song dedicated to it.

Since we're still on the topic of Warcraft, probably my most favorite would have to be Invincible (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4n6WP9qHyRM). Killing Arthas is one of my favorite memories for WoW and I liked the cutscene at the end with Arthas having the final conversation with his father before he dies.

Heheh, yeah, I guess when taken out of context they're all pretty relaxing! What I particularly like about the scorched earth track is that it has some creepy/slightly discordant undertones that add to the strangeness and mystery of the stage. This, for instance, is the track for the ice/winter stage overworld:

It doesn't get much better than Arthas or Invincible.  :smile Icecrown Citadel was a great raid even if I preferred Ulduar due a better atmosphere but I agree that the ICC cutscene was one of the best ones in the game because of the great writing and the relief that Blizzard didn't initiate any stupid redemption story for its best villain.  Overall, WoW has been the best game of all time for me even if neither am I playing it right now.  :p

I may have obviously grown up around Donkey Kong, but lately I've been attached to the music from the Shutokou Battle games (known as Tokyo Xtreme Racer in the US). I smashed Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero twice on my PS2, and I managed to get most of Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 (Shutokou Battle 01) beaten, only to run into that infamous money glitch that the US version has.  :(petrie

For all of the Lego video games I've played over the past year, I've had a few favorite pieces of music in each of them, but since many of them are almost identical to the soundtrack of the movies those games are based on, I'm not sure if I should even bother sharing them in this topic. However, the most recent Lego game I played, LEGO Batman 2, is not based on any movies or shows, so I'll share my favorite music from that particular game.

I had told myself from the beginning that I wasn't going to bother getting the game Civiliation VI, due to how incredibly time-consuming the previous game had been for me. However, after stumbling across the music that is used for the main menu of that game, I'm honestly starting to have second thoughts.

The most recent Lego game I've played was Lego Marvel Superheroes, and I really liked much of the music it had.

Here's a link to a full playlist:

Since I don't want to overwhelm this post with videos, I'll just list some of my favorites from that playlist:
Helicarrier
Exploratory Laboratory #2
Rock up at the Lock up (Boss Fight #1)
Rebooted, Resuited #1
Red Head Detention #3
Juggernauts and Crosses (Boss Fight)
Taking Liberties #2      <<{this one is my most favorite}
Rapturous Rise (Boss Fight)
Magnetic Personality (Boss Fight)
Titles (not on this playlist, but I did find on another playlist):

I don't really play it, but Final Fantasy has some great songs that make me want to own the game. As said before, I haven't played a single FF game in my life, but I would be ready to buy it just to listen to that sweet music.  :) Another game's soundtrack that I absolutely love is Halo, it's so well done. Then of course there is also Skyrim. That game was just something else.

To be honest, I think the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U had the best video game music out there, because it was very nostalgic to listen to today.

And I’m being serious.  Every application that was built-in, including the shop, had a special piece of music.  It was so amazing how Nintendo was able to do this.

Too bad the Switch is just silence though…

This theme which plays during one of Red Dead Redemption 2's epilogue missions.  I was bummed out from Arthur's fate and then I was treated to this.  Hell yeah!  John Marston's back!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VGyYTo9aAQ

I have all those systems, and I agree, the Switch needs more music.

Every Mario Kart song gets stuck in my head after doing a level. And Just Dance (obviously :p) gets lots of songs in my head. This was an activity my family would do for physical activity in the winter.
