Title: Fanfiction Guidelines
Post by: Mumbling on February 28, 2012, 02:56:36 AM
I've been requested to make a short topic explaining some of the guidelines in the fanfiction forum.

1. Please do not post a new topic for every chapter you've written. This is messy and makes it harder for other members to read back in the story. You wouldn't want to scare away readers by having 60 topics for one story ;). You can simply go back to your topic and post a new post with your latest chapter.

2. Not all feedback has to be positive. If people have constructive criticism, they may post it. If you don't want to hear negative commentary, request it in your very first post of the topic of your fanfiction.

That's all for now. More may be added later upon request or when necessary.

You had me worked up there for a minute, Mumbling. When I first saw this topic, I though t was for the 2012 fanfiction awards, but then I wondered "Why would it be starting this early?" :lol

I can understand by appearance, but as far as placement goes, if it appears in this section, it's not for any awards. All fan fiction award related threads are kept here for future reference: http://gangoffive.net/index.php?showforum=45 (http://gangoffive.net/index.php?showforum=45).

Yes, TFS is right :) I don't know exactly when the awards will be taking place, but it will take a while :P:

Yeah, but I usually just look at the today's active topics section, so I rarely pay attention to what section it's posted in before I read it.

Pardon me, but are there specific guidelines re: story ratings?
Or at least, what are folks comfortable with?

I'm not exactly prone to writing gruesome descriptions or profanity, but I was wondering what standards folks generally adhere to... the kind of content found in the original movie? Or the sequels? Or is more "mature" stuff okay, as long as it's tasteful? Most of my fics tend to be PG rated or so, but if I post something in the future I'd rather be sure that I won't offend.  :o

Hum, I don't think there are rules about that. As per unwritten rule we do not accept pornography, since that does not belong to the movie nor is it suitable for the younger audience on this forum. Anything else would be okay, in my opinion.

However, if readers are disgusted or angry about something that's written in here and mention this to the admin team, we might look into it and send the author a PM regarding the removal of the topic.

PG rated is fine.

You're supposed to create a topic for your fanfiction, not post it as a response to this topic.

*raises hand* I have a question: is hinted romance (*cough* hinted pornish stuffs *cough*) okay, because one of my fanfics is rated M over at FF.net because of a hint of romance in one of the chapters, but the other chapters have no such stuff. Do I need to cut/rewrite that particular Chapter when I'm gonna post it here? Or would a warning at the beginning of that post/story be enough? :confused

I had posted this before in the section.

I'd say, hinted yes, graphical no. If it's a teeny tiny section of a fanfiction it is fine with me. As long as not the entire fanfiction is pornographic :p However, if members complain about it being too disgusting/revolting you may have to remove/edit it. Feel free to include a warning nonetheless for sensitive readers.

Hello! I think I know the answer to this question, but I thought it would be a good idea to ask first, just in case: are songfics, and similar stories, allowed here?

Sincerely yours,
J.

P.S.: Tut-tut, Friendly Sharptooth; it isn't nice to eat one's friends!

Hope it's not too bad if I post in here after years of silence in the topic, but is it allowed to make like an overview/masterpost-topic for my fanfic?

Just wanna be sure it's ok before I make one.

Looks like this question may have been overlooked. I'm not sure of the answer myself, but perhaps @rhombus could shed some light. In fact, I'm curious to know as well.

Sorry, somehow I missed your original comment until now. Yes, that should be fine.

Please be advised that the fanfiction guidelines have been updated in order to match the policies of the forum.

3. Though fanart and fanfictions are welcomed and encouraged on the forum, the use of another author’s original character in those works shall require the express consent of the creator of the original character.

4. The posting of another writer’s work is to be expressly identified as such and may only be posted with the consent of the original author, giving them credit for the story in the post.

5. No pornography. This includes stories which merely contain fetish material. There are other sites on the Internet to post such material, but this forum is not one of those.

We hope that this clarifies things. If you have any questions about these revised guidelines, please do not hesitate to let us know.  :)

Tagging @Mumbling so she knows this is here hopefully, but I remember reading somewhere in this forum that fanfictions needed to be cross-posted onto fanfiction.net, but now I can't find the post that says that. Is that rule A) real and B) does it apply to all fanfic posting? Only really asking because fanfiction.net has been really glitchy for me the past few years and logging in often doesn't work.

I believe that only applies if you wish to participate in the fanfic prompts! Tagging @rhombus since he'll know :)

I found the post that mentioned that rule, and it was indeed for the prompt event. I think I'll go ahead and upload the fic when it's ready and if I'm wrong then Rhombus can correct me.
