Title: 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup
Post by: The Chronicler on June 06, 2019, 10:30:06 PM
Tomorrow will be the start of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France. Like last time, there are 24 teams competing, though four of them are in the World Cup for the first time ever. But of course, I'm hoping to see defending champion team USA to win again this year (even though they now have the most championships of all teams at three, there's nothing wrong with seeing them go further and get a fourth win).

I don't have much time these days for long posts, so I'll probably just mention the results of each game every few days. Once the group stage is over and the knockout stage gets started, I'll start getting more detailed about the results. As for which matches I'l actually watch, I'll probably see in the group stage only the three that team USA plays, and depending on how much time I have available, I'd like to see most of the knockout round matches.

Anyone else here interested in watching any of this?

France blows out South Korea 4-0. yes its only 1 game, but basically France served notice it is the class of its group.

Thanks for being willing to take the time to mention and briefly explain the results of every game, Nick. As much as I'd like to do it myself, I just can't set aside enough time these days to watch most of these matches, let alone post about them here (certainly not to the extent that I did for the men's World Cup last year).

Spain rallies to defeat South Africa, by scoring 3 times in the final 20 minutes, twice on penalty kicks. final score was 3-1. all is not lost for south Africa, as  some of the third place finishers in the groups will advance to the 16 team knockout stage.

Norway crushes Nigeria 3-0, when Germany rather surprisingly only beats china 1-0. still a win is better than a tie and much better than a loss. unless both teams lose their final 2 games , they should advance out of group play.

I managed to find myself forced to wait a while with nothing to do at around noon today, so I was able to take the opportunity to watch the match between England and Scotland. It was certainly fun to watch. (I also find it interesting that this is the first Women's World Cup ever for Scotland, and quite ironically, their very first match happened to be against longtime rival England.)

Argentina and Japan, fight to a scoreless draw. both teams get 1 point, and it makes the next 2 games for each more important. ties arent as bad as losses, but it puts you behind in the race to win the group. remember  4 3rd place teams will advance out of group play. along with all 6 group winners and all 6 second place finishers.

US absolutely wallops Thailand 13-0.  Alex Morgan had 5 goals by herself, and the US scored 10 times in the second half, turning a 3-0 halftime lead into a 13-0 laugher.  basically the US has clinched advancement almost regardless of how they do in the final 2 games, due to the 13 goals scored.

In other WC games today
Netherlands scored in the last minute to avoid a 0-0 tie with new Zealand. Netherlands wins 1-0 to get the full 3 points.
Sweden scored twice in the final 15 minutes, including a 94th minute sealer, to beat Chile 2-0.

the 13 goals scored by the Us  shatter the WWC record for goals in a game. Germany had held the record, scoring 11 in a 11-0 rout of Argentina in 2007.  I'm thinking this record will stand for awhile.

Wow, that USA vs Thailand match... now that's what I call an epic blowout. That result was more than double even the most optimistic predictions for this match. If anyone thought the US would go easy on a weak team like Thailand, they thought horribly wrong. This just goes to show that the defending champions are definitely here to win it all.

Their next opponent will be Chile on Sunday, and while I doubt it'll be anywhere nearly as overwhelming as today's match was, I'm expecting another easy win for the US.

Well, seeing no immediate updates from Nick, I guess I'll just mention that, with today's results, France and Germany are definitely going to advance to the knockout stage, so their third group stage matches next week will determine where they will end up on the bracket.

Australia rallied from 2-0 down to defeat brazil  3-2and stay alive in group play. a loss would have out them  in a position they would neeed a win and a lot of help to advance. now they have 3 points, along with  Brazil and Italy, although right now Brazil leads the group on goal differential at +2. Italy and Jamaica still have to play each other, and Australia still has Jamaica left to play. Italy if they beat jamaica will advance, pretty much regardless of what happens in their match against Brazil.

To respond top Chroniclers post, yes both Germany and France have booked their spots into the bracket. they both have 6 points with 1 game to go. in Frances case, its likely Nigeria and Norway will get out of group play as well. remember whoever finished second is guaranteed a spot, while for the 3rd place teams only the top 4 in points and goal differential advance.

Over the last few days, the teams that are definitely moving on to the knockout round are France, Germany, Italy, England, Netherlands, and Canada. After tomorrow's matches, I'm expecting both USA and Sweden to also be guaranteed to advance.
Title: Re: 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup
Post by: Nick22 on June 15, 2019, 09:04:49 PM
Netherlands defeat Cameroon 3-1.
 Canada defeats New Zealand 2-0.
Both clinch spots in the Knockout round with 1 game to play.
Cameroon and New Zealand will play each other, the winner will finish 3rd in group,  but given how the 3rd place teams stand in other groups the winner will likely need at least 3 goals and get their goal differential to 0.

US leads 3-0 at half. absent a huge collapse, they are headed to the Round of 16. they need 2 more goals to set a record for pool play goals- 17 is the record.

Title: Re: 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup
Post by: The Chronicler on June 16, 2019, 07:45:04 PM
I did indeed watch the match between USA and Chile. With Chile being another relatively weak team, this match made use of a lot of newer players to see what they're capable of. The upcoming match against Sweden will be the US's first real challenge of this World Cup, and although both teams are already advancing, the result will determine who they end up playing against in the knockout round.

Anyway, today's results means that not only are Sweden and USA definitely advancing, but also Japan will be advancing, as their current score is enough to ensure at least a strong enough third place to be among the top four of those. So that's nine teams confirmed for the Round of 16: France, Germany, Italy, England, Netherlands, Canada, Sweden, USA, and Japan. The third and final round of group matches will determine which teams take the remaining seven openings, as well as where on the bracket those sixteen teams will end up.
Title: Re: 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup

Groups A and B are now finished.

For Group A, first is France, second is Norway, third is Nigeria, and fourth is South Korea. Norway is now advancing along with France, South Korea has been eliminated, and Nigeria will have to wait and see if their third place result is good enough to advance.

For Group B, first is Germany, second is Spain, third is China, and fourth is South Africa. Spain is now advancing along with Germany, South Africa has been eliminated, and China has such a strong third place result that they're also definitely going to advance.

France, Norway, Germany, and Spain are now confirmed where on the knockout round bracket they will be, but their opponents are yet to be determined (though if the US wins their group, they'll end up playing against Spain), while China will have to wait and see which other third place teams will advance before their placement on the bracket can be determined.

Japan and China are basically guaranteed 2 of the  3rd place spots. so really 10 of the 16 spots in the bracket have already been punched. we simply have to determine what other 6 teams will advance,.  At this point I have tio imagine brazil will advance, as all they need is a tie against Italy to get to 4 points. i expect Australia will crush Jamaica, so they should advance.  I expect Argentina to advance by beating scitland, Chile to advance by beating Thailand, whoever wins out of Cameroon new Zealand should get enough goals to make it. i expect nigeria should make it as well. thats the 6 other teams.
Title: Re: 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup

Australia Beats jamaica 4-1 and Brazil defeats Italy 1-0 to advance to the knockout round as the 3rd place team in the group. Italy, Brazil and Australia all got 6 points, but Italy had the best goal differential of +5, while Australia and brazil had +3 each. Italy wins the group, and since Australia won the head to head with brazil, they get the second slot in group.
Title: Re: 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup

With today's results in Group C (first is Italy, second is Australia, third is Brazil, and fourth is Jamaica), Australia will advance along with Italy, Jamaica (one of the four first-time teams in this World Cup) has been eliminated, and Brazil got a strong enough third place that they are also definitely advancing.

For the knockout round bracket, Italy's opponent has yet to be determined, Brazil's place on the bracket won't be determined until the remaining third place teams have been set, but we do know now that Australia will be playing against Norway.

EDIT: Also of note is that in today's match, Brazil player Marta has now scored a total of 17 goals in all of her World Cup appearances, which is officially the all-time World Cup record among both women and men as well.

With today's results in Group D (first is England, second is Japan, third is Argentina, and fourth is Scotland) England and Japan now have their places on the knockout round bracket confirmed, Scotland has been eliminated, and Argentina will have to wait and see if their third place result is good enough.

Tomorrow are all the remaining matches of Groups E and F. In both groups, the top two are already definite, so the only question there is who will get first or second for placement on the bracket. As for the third place teams, there are only two openings left, with six teams having a chance for them. Group E has Cameroon and New Zealand, and Group F has Chile and Thailand. If any of those four teams actually wins their next match tomorrow (a good possibility, since they'll be playing each other in their respective groups), Argentina will be eliminated. Nigeria is also at risk of being eliminated, but two of the other four teams will both need such strong wins that I think Nigeria will probably be advancing.

Argentina was VERY lucky to escape with a tie, and to be honest, a tie isnt going to be good enough. i just cant see Chile not beating Thailand soundly. Cameroon and new Zealand should be closer, the winner of that game will need at least a +2 goal differential to pass  Nigeria who has a -2 goal differential.

New Zealand and Cameroon at tied at 1 with under 10 to play. both will be eliminated if that score holds.

Basically it boils down to this. Chile needs at least 4 goals against Thailand without surrendering any, in order to book their place into the round of 16.  Nigeria and Cameroon both have -2 goal differential.
Title: Re: 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup
Post by: Nick22 on June 20, 2019, 03:03:36 PM
Upo further review, Cameroon is in  , no matter what. so we';re down to 3 teams , Nigeria, Chile and technically Thailand, fighting for  the last spot. Since Thailand would need to score 15 goals,  and that wont happen. it really is down to Chile and Nigeria. as long as Chile wins by 4 or more goals, they will make it. otherwise, Nigeria will get the last spot.

US leads 1-0 at half , on a 3rd minute goal by Lindsey Horan. If the result holds the US will win the group and will face Spain the round of 16.
Thailand surprisingly has held Chile to a scoreless draw through half. . if that holds it would be an upset, and eliminate Chile.

That match the US played against Spain quite remarkably didn't go as easy as many were expecting. Much like France over Brazil yesterday, the US really had to step up their game to actually advance through the tournament. And with that goal Spain scored, team USA's shutout streak in World Cup matches (going back to the group stage match against Australia in 2015) finally ends at a total of 647 minutes (not sure if that's a record, but it would not surprise me if it is).

Looks like USA will be playing against France in the quarterfinal on Friday, just like a lot of experts were predicting. It should be noted that most of these experts were also rather evenly split on either the US or France would eventually win the World Cup, making this upcoming quarterfinal arguably the most important one of all. Personally, as much as I think France deserves to go further, I don't think it should come at the expense of giving the US its worst finish ever in a Women's World Cup, so I'm sticking with team USA.

I wanted to mention yesterday that my picks for the Round of 16 matches were all the same as what you had called for, and it looks like all of them were right (interestingly enough, this made the US the only non-European team in the quarterfinals). As for the quarterfinals, I agree with your picks of England, USA, and Germany, but I think Italy will win over Netherlands. We'll see how things turn out over the next couple of days.

USA wins 2-1 over France!

Now that was an exciting game to watch. Both sides played very well, but the US continues their World Cup record of never losing after scoring the first goal, and continues their streak in this World Cup of scoring the first goal within 12 minutes. And with Megan Rapinoe scoring both goals in this game as well as both goals in the previous game, she now holds the record for most consecutive goals of any player for their team.

Now it's on to the semifinal match on Tuesday, where the US will play against England.

rapionoe is the first player sinvce brazil's  Marta in 2007, to score 2 goals in back to back games. US very nearly had a 3-0 leaed that was called back for being offsides.  US is guaranteed 2 more games, regardless of if they win or lose on Tuesday.

the final 4 is set. US v England. Netherlands vs Sweden. All 4 teams are guaranteed 2 games. semi winners go to the final, semi losers to the 3rd place game.

That sure was quite a surprise. Looks like neither of us expected Sweden to win, while I was also wrong about the Netherlands winning. Anyway, it should be noted that of the four remaining teams, the US is the only one with any championships. When this World Cup is over, either the US will win a record fourth championship, or one of the other three teams will win their very first championship.

So what are your picks for the remaining matches? I think USA will beat England and Netherlands will beat Sweden (mostly because I'd rather not have the final be a rematch of a group stage game) For the third place game, I'd like to see England win against Sweden, and the final will have USA winning against Netherlands.

into stoppage time. US leads 2-1. England had a tying goal waved off for offsides then had a penalty kick that was saved by the US goaltender.

US hangs on to win 2-1, and will advance to the championship game. England plays in the 3rd place game.

That sure was quite an exciting game to watch. Quite a shame Megan Rapinoe had to sit out due to an injury, but at least they're saying she should be able to recover in time for the final match on Sunday. Here's an interesting statistic: Alex Morgan, who scored the second goal for the US, just became the first player to ever score a World Cup goal on her birthday.

Now we just have to see if the US will play against Sweden or the Netherlands, depending on the results of tomorrow's match.

Other obligations prevented me from watching most of today's match, but I did manage to start watching just in time to see that game-winning goal. So, in only their second ever Women's World Cup appearance, the Netherlands have made it all the way to the final.

For the third-place match on Saturday, I think England will win against Sweden, and as for the final on Sunday, I think the United States will win against Netherlands.

Sweden defeats england 2-1 to clinch 3rd place in the World Cup. not bad for their second ever appearance. US plays Netherlands for the title tomorrow.

US wins the world cup 2-0. Megan Rapinoe wins golden boot for most goals with 6, and won MVP ( golden Ball) as well. US scored 26 goals in the tournament, the most ever, and Joins Germany in 2003 and 2007 as the only teams win consecutive World Cups. This is the US' 4th WC title, second only to Brazil mens 5.

That sure was fun to watch (almost missed it due to DirecTV suddenly dropping that channel a few days ago, but thankfully my dad was able to get us a new provider rather quickly). In addition to all the statistics you mentioned, Megan Rapinoe's goal was only the second penalty kick ever done in a Women's World Cup final (the first was in 2007), and she also became the oldest women to ever score a goal in a World Cup final (just a few days after her 34th birthday). Perhaps most significantly of all is that with this being the eighth Women's World Cup and the US got their fourth championship, the US has officially won half of all Women's World Cups (sure it was also true after two and then four tournaments, but after eight tournaments makes it really impressive).

yes the other was by marta in 2007 (which she missed). i doubt rapinoe will still be playing in 2023 as she;ll be 38 during the tournament.
