I just noticed how we're only just shy of two hundered members, and was wondering how many of them are actually active, or even have been active at all. Is there some way of working it out without manually trawling through the lists?

EDIT: Just realised this is in the Party Room, I could've sworn I was in the Fridge. I don't suppose someone could quickly move this topic?

As a matter of fact the admins recently had to check out the post count of members for something soon to be heard of. At that time (a few weeks ago already) we had 53 members with more than 100 posts and 19 with more than 50. A few members of both groups have not been heard of in a long while. There is a large number of people who signed up but never posted or posted but only a few times.

Maybe some of them join and just read the posts.   I guess some get busy, or maybe loose the address.

Yes, i think the majority of the people who have signed up to the Gang Of Five, have made few posts and/or none at all and then just aren't active for a long time. :(

Well, if they don't bookmark us, they're probably sad to discover that they cannot easily just find us on google. -_-

A friend suggested something to me about that. Would a free .tk site which redirects here be easier to find on Google?

Or do whatever steps are necessary so this forum shows up under Google searches for gang of five, land before time, and certain other search words or phrases.

I wonder if submitting the website address would work.  I may try that.

how much meta is in the header?

Land Before Time, message board, forum, Great Valley, Littlefoot, Little Foot, Cera, Ducky, Duckie, Petrie, Spike, Chomper, sharptooth, Don Bluth, landbeforetime

LBT,  fan forum, Mysterious Beyond, Great, Valley, Mysterious, Beyond, Ruby,

(why not also have the words separate XD)

we should also add a
<meta name="classification" content="The Land Before Time" />
<meta name="copyright" content="IPS, Inc." />

perhaps

yay XD Wikipedia says "metadata are data about data" wow... lol that sounds funny

    * Metadata is information about data.
    * Metadata is information about information.
    * Metadata contains information about that data or other data

head spins now...

anyway... meta is the stuff that directs people to pages for the most part

Wow, looks like you know web search engines very well.  Maybe you can be in charge of that project.

I've heard that the Google algothrim is almost impossible to "hack" in order to make a website appear higher up.

I put all the appropriate meta tags in four years ago.  There's not much else I can do in that department.  I've submitted this page before as well.  If someone wants to do it again, go ahead, it doesn't bother me, but it has not really helped.  Word of mouth is the best method for us.

My website makes it on the second page of google when you type in "download the land before time tv episodes."  It also comes up on the second page if you type in "download the land before time tv series."  The only good way to get a site indexed well on google is backlinks, backlinks, backlinks!

That's why if you just type in "the land before time tv episodes" or "the land before time tv series" I'm on the 100 and something'th page.  People backlink to me using the name "download" and "land before time" and "tv episodes".

You must also remember that google doesn't index websites, it indexes web pages.  Just for an example, go to google and type in your username here.  It should pop up a thread or two you've posted here because it indexed those PAGES, not the website "z7.invisionfree.com/thegangoffive"

Petrie, if you want to make this website come up on the first few pages of google when you type in "the land before time forum" or "land before time forum", it's really not that hard to do, but we'll need help from a lot of members here.  One mistake you made however was calling this site a "message board".  People are more familiar with "forum".

If you type in "the land before time" on google, the wiki result will come up.  Why?  Because there are so many backlinks to it.  If you look at the page source they've put very mild effort into the website content itself to make it show up on the first page of google.

So how do we get this site on the first few pages of google?  We have to backlink in every way we can.  Just register at any forum and put a link in your signature to here.  Make sure to make it say something like "click here to go to the land before time forum!"

Getting a new domain name would do wonders too Petire.  People can still go to "z7.invisionfree.com/thegangoffive", but you should make a new domain name "landbeforetimeforum.co.nr" just to attract google more.

Backlinking isn't just so you can attract attention of members of the site you're backlinking on.  It also makes you rank better on google.

The meta name is also essential.  If anything else, you should change it to "the land before time forum" over and over and over.

Hidden comments also helps in some cases.  Since you didn't make this site from scratch, google will most likely not catch on that you're using hidden comments to attract attention from googles tracking spiders.

In conclusion, I did absolutely nothing to make my site come up on the second page of google.  Backlinking is the #1 way to get results.  If I did hidden comments and better meta names, I'm sure I could be the first on google, but I'm content where I am for now.

Here is the head section of the first page that comes up on google when you type in "download the land before time tv episodes":

<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
    <title>The Land Before Time - TV.com </title>
    <meta name="description" content="The Land Before Time TV Show, TV.com is your reference guide to The Land Before Time Show. Episode guide, photos, videos, cast and crew information, forums, reviews and more. " />
    <meta name="keywords" content="The Land Before Time TV Show, The Land Before Time Television Show, The Land Before Time Episode guide, The Land Before Time photos, The Land Before Time videos, The Land Before Time cast, The Land Before Time crew , The Land Before Time Information, The Land Before Time forums, The Land Before Time reviews, The Land Before Time Reference, The Land Before Time ,Drama, Sci-fi, Comedy, Action-Adventure, Reality, Animation, Soap, Children, Talk Shows, Top Shows" />
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://image.com.com/tv/css/stylesheet.css" />
    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.tv.com/js/mootools/mootools.js"></script>

    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.tv.com/js/cnet/dbug.js"></script>

        <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.tv.com/js/cnet/prototype.compatability.js"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.tv.com/js/newWindow.js"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.tv.com/js/global.js?1"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.tv.com/js/mbox.js"></script>

    </head>

As you can see, not much effort was put into the meta tags and crap of this site, even though it ranks first.

A freedomain.co.nr name is technically free.  You must put a link to their website on your home page.  I have one on mine.  You can't even see it, but it's there.  Having "the land before time" or "land before time" in your URL really helps your google listing.  My original URL to my website is:

www.freewebs.com/landbeforetimelover

It still ranks well in google because it has "landbeforetime" in the name.  I've submitted both the URL above and the URL "www.landbeforetime.co.nr" to google.  They show up in different places, but they still appear on the first pages of google.

Go to www.freedomain.co.nr and register.  It takes 5 minutes to set up a free domain name.  Be sure you put the link on GOF's home page though asap.  I would recommend making the link hidden so it doesn't look like crap on the home page.  Simply use HTML comments "<-- and -->" to hide content.  They say they check the page manually to see if you've hidden the link, but they really don't.  They just have a search spider come and check your website for a link.  It's not too obvious though.  If you want to be sure to keep your domain I would show the link just in case.  Just put this in the code of GOF on the home page:

<font size="1"><a href="http://www.freedomain.co.nr">b</a></font>

This will make it so there's nothing but an inconspicuous and tiny letter b somewhere on the page.  No one will even notice it, but their spider will pick it up and keep your domain for you.

Take a look at my computer repair website:

http://techrepair.co.nr

I actually like the banner button thingy they want you to put on your site for here.  I don't know why.  You don't have to have a banner button though.  You can have a tiny letter B as a link and it'll do the same job.  I didn't pay a cent for this website.  No one really has to.  It's just easier to pay out the butt to get a website and get on the first page of google, but there are other ways.
