It does look like it may be a good movie, with action, a good plot and maybe a message.

Watched the 3D version of the movie this morning with the family... And I have to say it was FREAKIN' AWESOME.

Those special effects and the technology used to create them were absolutely mind-blowing. The wildlife of Pandora is very well-designed... seems alien yet similar to our creatures. And the battle scenes... my gosh. The only movie I've ever seen that was more epic than this would have to be Transformers. (No, I'm not joking, I really liked Transformers.)

Truly excellent film, I'd recommend it to anyone who loves Sci-fi films.

The Lord of the Rings easily trumps this.

Edit: oops, double posted the above by mistake. Might as well take this opportunity to expand on the above then.

LotR trumps Avatar because it takes more than stuff blowing up to be epic. There also has to be an emotional investment that connects one to the characters. LotR had that by the bucketload. This...did not.

Just got out from this. Initial reaction: best movie of the year, ridiculously awesome. Weirdraptor, we get it already. You worship Lord of the Rings. We understand. There is no need to constantly refer to the Lord of the Rings as if it were the Bible. Everyone has an opinion. I still love the Empire Strikes Back more than this movie, and I still think Return of the King was about as good, but I don't have to constantly try and compare things. It's just getting a bit annoying, that's all. I'm sorry if I snapped or something.

Best movie 2009 for me. Breathtaking, emotional, has a good plot. A must see!

I wanna see this movie. Badly!
I just hope that the camera doesn't fly around like crazy as it does in movies such as Quantum of Solace and 2012... It makes you dizzy!

Just watched this movie today... 2 WORDS: Epicness overload.

Behold, the true holy epicness of a James Cameron film! :lol

I loved every single second of it. Too bad my mom says otherwise though - she starts falling asleep when the Na'vis show up. Same goes for my dad, but he'd practically fall asleep on any movie we go to watch. :p

Anyways, it's a really awesome film. My fav part is when Ney'tiri was teaching Jake the ways of the Na'vi. (*cough* b**** slap *cough* XD)

A trilogy? I hope the next 2 are as well written.  I've heard from multiple folks on 2 forums how good the film is.  I may need to add it to my dvd's to eventually purchase.

I saw it myself. It was BEAUTIFUL. The animation, the storyline, everything. :D :wow

I loved how they were able to surpass some cliques with spiritual parts.

I really don't understand your comment WR. At least this movie HAD a storyline and things weren't just blowing up....there was betrayal, spirituality, and the concept of being in another world. So what was it about it that was so bad?

I haven't seen this movie yet, but outside of WeirdRaptor and a friend of mine, I haven't seen any really bad comments about it. I heard it was an excellent movie. I may decide to go see it.

I saw this movie in 3D last week, the ticket sure was expensive (7 euros with a student discount!) but it was worth it. All in all, great plot, great design, photography, special effects. It's pure science fiction at its best.

However, for me it wasn't the best movie of 2009. That would have to go to 500 Days of Summer, a great film, it's wonderful how they picked up a simple script and turned it into something epic.

as a side note, i just searched and the language is a real language of about 1000 words, grammer, everything.

Saw it today with my brothers. All three of us LOVED it. We’re thinking of going back to see it again. :p

Not only was the film visually spectacular beyond adjectives (even using the following emoticon to describe it feels like an understatement: :wow), but the effort the filmmakers went into to create a believable alien world was astonishing (and admirable as well).

This is definitely one of the best movies I've seen this year. :yes

I saw this movie back in December. I gotta say I wasn't surprised how amazing of a movie this was. I mean we are talking about James Cameron, the genious behind Terminator, Titanic, and Alien! Sure this is his first movie since Titanic but still. It was pure movie genious from start to finish.

To me, I might hire it out on DVD when it's released then as I already want to see two other movies in the cinemas, Sherlock Holmes and The Princess and the Frog.....and I'm poor enough as it is :lol

Actually, James Cameron had nothing to do with the original Alien movie. The first Alien movie was directed by Ridley Scott. Cameron was not even part of the casting for the first movie. It was Aliens, the first sequel, that James Cameron directed.

Words cannot describe how amazing this movie was to me. And to see it in 3D almost literally blew my mind...afterwards however I was ranting for several hours that seeing the movie in 2D would do the audience no justice what-so-ever. But everyone I've seen it with will agree, it IS movie of the year, hands down. Now I know that is alot considering that it is only the beginning of 2010, but until I see another movie with the same stunning visuals and textures, my opinion stands as is. Avatar = Movie of the Year. :lol

I've yet to actually see Avatar but I've heard all the ranting and raving over it from day dot. For a movie to be "15 years in the making", that's a pretty gutsy statement but everyone I've spoken to rates the movie top notch. I will get around to seeing Avatar eventually and I remain pleasantly optimistic. As for Movie of the Year...well, we'll see ;)

I just got back from seeing it with a friend.
I liked it in many ways, but I have really nothing more to say.
The media has overblown it though; it was not as good as it was foretold in my opinion.
Still, I was stunned part-wise. Pandora was AWESOME!

Here's a quick review I wrote on my Facebook page:

This film was excellent: the plot was derivative, but not enough so that it fails to carve out its own identity. The visuals and 3-D were incredible, and I greatly enjoyed thy fact that James Cameron created Pandora, a world that is more or less plausible, especially when considering that the planet itself is a consciousness, making the film seem that much more real. The villians' stauntch imperialistic natures are reminiscent of the actions of Britain and other European powers in the 17th and 18th century, and the fact that stories not too different from this actually occurred between Western settlers and American natives makes this a plot rooted in history. My only complaints would be that the dialogue was occasionally awkward or misplaced, and that the environmental message gets slightly out of hand for a second or two. Still, this is by far the greatest film of 2009, and proves that James Cameron, unlike some of his collegues, still has what it takes to create a resonating, feel-good blockbuster. Well done, sir!

Also, for those who think this is just Dancing with Wolves,
