Title: What is Your current job or future job
Post by: oogaboo on October 16, 2010, 05:50:08 PM
I'm currently working for Publix, which isn't bad, but my future job will be Web Designing and working for the IT department for fixing computers. When I save enough money I'll have my own business I hope.

What job are you in or getting into and how is it treating you?

I just got a night stocker job at a Wal-Mart.

My dream job right now would be some kind of programmer, or at least something having to do heavily with computers.

Well, right now I'm a senior student, and I'm casually looking for a summer job. Something simple enough, like a joe-job or shelf-stacking or something. So far, no luck.

But my dream job is in animation. Preferably traditional, or at least hand-drawn (I don't mind CG, but I actually know how to do hand-drawn).

At the moment I'm a production assistant at a web design company, but ideally... in terms of career after college.... hmmmm.

Still working on that one :p I'm taking the Foreign Service Exam in June, but I mean I'm not holding my breath on that, as I think only 2.5% of the test takers go on to join the service. But yeah, I'd like to work in the Foreign Service, or an intelligence agency. Still narrowing down my choices. It's a big world out there. :p

I'm currently looking for a job since my internship fell through, hoping for at least a position as a manager somewhere.

As for the future I will be a paleontologist.  I have always wanted to be one and I have taken the beginning steps to become one after my first year of college.

I've pretty much made up my mind, and I'm shooting for either an intelligence agency, the Smithsonian, or the Foreign Service, which is my first choice. Nine more months until I can take the exam again... I intend to pass it this time. :p

I'm remodeling Wal-Mart right now. It's a series of temp jobs ranging from a few weeks to a couple months each.

I'm trying to get hired by one of the Wal-Marts I've worked at. It'd be great if they'd hire me, because at least I'd have a stable job, and not have to deal with the stress, uncertainty and worry that temp jobs give, with minimum wage and no benifits. It SUCKS!

Lucky for me I have a Job with benefits and I'm very thankful for my job. I'm a Produce Clerk part time with benefits and a union so I'm not leaving my job anytime soon. You people need to be thankful for your jobs in stead of bitching and complaining about your current jobs you have. Be thankful you have a job in this very bad economy.

^ Why would I be happy if I feel I'm underemployed below my level? That's like settling for less, and I'm far too ambitious to EVER do something like that. I NEVER sell myself short, especially if it deals with a field I can't stand. I never said I wasn't thankful, which I am, I'm just wishing I had a real job with actual salary and benefits. THAT would be more commensurate with my level of education. Yes, I make decent money, but have no benefits, and hate the type of work I'm doing. To me, it's not about making money, it's about being fulfilled while making a living off of that. You may seek to sell yourself short, but I'll never do that. I got my degree for a reason, and I don't intend to waste it on this job.

I feel it's good to stoke your dreams, and not stop until you get there. I've so far made every one of my goals come true, and this is no different. I am very thankful I have a job, but do I feel it's my ideal point I need to be at? Definitely not. I have no benefits, so I'm basically screwed next year once I lose my health insurance. Don't really see how that's something to just sit back and say how good I have it, because I really don't. It's people like you that I simply never listen to, because I don't believe in ever selling myself short, nor am I content to settle for what temporary crap I have until I accomplish my actual, real, tangible goals. I never said I wasn't thankful, just that I wished I was working another job.

They are thankful they have a job. Anybody who has a job in this economy is thankful. But that doesn't mean they enjoy their jobs. Sometimes the jobs they're stuck with are shitty and give absolutely no benefits.

I do anything I can to make money (except sell myself ;) ). Sometimes I babysit (some people give me around 40 bucks per kid, which I think is absolutely insane!), or I mow lawns and not tiny little lawns. Some people around here have lawns the size of my house. Good pay there, too. In my spare time, if I ever get any, I volunteer at the local animal shelter. No pay, but it's fun to work with the animals. I also work at a pet store on the weekends.

^ Thank you, Justin. :yes Yeah... that's my point too. Just because Sanitation Workers get paid a lot, do you think they enjoy their job? It's a generalization yes, but an example all the same. Yeah, ideally, I'd like a job with a salary and benefits, not just a job with a wage. :p I'm thankful for it, you better believe it, and would fight to keep it, but do I like it? Eh... no. :p

Sounds like a fun volunteer job, at the animal shelter. :yes I love to work with animals too, but I haven't volunteered ever since I moved out of my home state.

Yeah, I'm thankful for what I do have, but that doesn't mean I'm trying to get better. I'm going to college right now for a degree in Computer Science, so I'm not planning on working some crappy temp or low level job forever.

I'm trying to work my way up, one step at a time. First, I'm worrying about getting a stable job. After I get that, I can worry about getting a GOOD job.

So right now I'm glad that I have this job. I'm just sick and tired of you people whining and complaining. So what if it's not the job you love right now. Just suck it up and be thankful for the job you have right now. That is all you need to do okay? It's a job job's aren't suppose to be fun. That is why it's called work. So everyone should be thankful for there jobs they have right now. tons of people right now don't have jobs. And it sucks but to the people that have jobs keep them. And stop complaining about the jobs you have, That is all I'm saying on this.

Last time I checked, you don't tell me how to act, or think, Petrie85. You don't like what we're saying, don't say anything at all, alright? You don't HAVE to open your mouth and be self-righteous about your opinion. That's rude, disrespectful, and not respecting our own opinions. If I disagree with something, I generally won't post it on a public forum because there's no need, unless it's a measure that needs to be passed or something. Otherwise, I'll just shut my mouth and not tell people how to think or act. What gives you the right to do that? You have absolutely no right, I'm sorry.

You didn't refute my point either, so I'm assuming you have no good counter argument to the point that having a job and being thankful for it is different from actually enjoying your job. As a matter of fact, you agreed with me in your post, so why did you even post this? That doesn't even make any sense.

I also disagree with you on the point that work can't be fun. I've had plenty of jobs I've enjoyed, and I feel for certain I'll love working in the Foreign Service. So yeah... saying work isn't supposed to be fun is too broad a generalization.

^^ You're welcome. I know somebody who thinks that same way. To be honest, I consider myself lucky I found jobs that I enjoy. I know when I visit my mom on the weekends, I can see how tired and stressed out she is from her work. She absolutely hates it there, but if she were to quit, it would be almost impossible to find another job. She's sticking it out until something better comes along.

I volunteer at a lot of animal shelters. Last year, I got lucky enough to volunteer at the Houston SPCA! It was amazing! The people there are so devoted to their work. It kind of made me sad to see the cases of animal abuse that they get there sometimes. But the people there are fully devoted to helping those animals. I think I may apply for the program again the upcoming summer.

Jobs can be fun!  :o
The jobs I do are fun! That is why people get degrees in college. To ensure they are qualified to do a job that they want to do. One that they are comfortable in. No one wants a job that they don't like. So they strive hard to get their dream job. Even if it means having a shitty job while working up to there. But that still doesn't mean they can't complain and "bitch" about it. Some people vent that way. It helps relieve some stress so that way they don't do something out of anger while at work that will cause them to get fired.

Yeah... on your first paragraph Justin, I agree. Your mom and I are in the same situation. If I left, it'd be very hard to get employed right now, so I'm roughing it out until either the economy improves, or I pass the exam next year. :yes

Oh wow! That sounds like a very good job. :yes Jeez... yeah animal abuse always gets me angry, and it's a saddening thing too. It's good to know you care so much, and devote some of your time to such a worthy cause. Kudos to you, sir. :yes

Heh, your third point is an excellent paragraph. That's WHY I got my degree. I want to work in something I'd love doing, namely traveling, learning about other cultures, and working in international relations. I live in the United States, and have every right to "bitch" about my job. :p It's therapeutic in a way, and you're right, keeps me from doing something stupid at work. I also find it helpful to know others are going through what I'm going through, or can at least relate, as I find common ground with them, make new acquaintances that way, and help my determination out to know that there are others like me not willing to give up and that will keep pushing until they get something better. It's an excellent point you make. :yes

Oh yeah, and reading vonboy's post, yes. It IS about taking steps. You're climbing a ladder... or at least, us ambitious types are. :p I went to college to get a degree and work in a field I'd love. I just didn't make it this year because I barely didn't pass the entrance exam (which only 30% of people pass anyway), but I feel more than confident I can make it next year, now that I know the layout of the exam, and given I was only nine points off, I should be able to make up for those extra points. I'm just on a lower rung right now due to circumstances I can't control. I'm THANKFUL I'm even on this rung, but am I just gonna sit back and say "Yep, time to stop here, even though I can't even see my Great Valley from this low down"? Definitely, positively, not!

And I, too agree with vonboy's post. One step at a time. And no breaks in between. At least, not for me. I have been working my butt off to make sure that I have some sort of stability when I head off into the world. I don't want to go in unprepared.

It sounds like it'd be worth it, that's for sure. :DD

That's what I did, and you'll love yourself for it. I was very frugal, and made sure I had at least a sound economic base by the time I left college, and also ensured that I had minimal loan debt as well. I COULD technically repay my college loan off right now, but I don't see the point just yet. I'm gonna save up a bit more, and if I get in with the State Department, and the Foreign Service in particular, many times they'll pay off your loan for you if you have less than 40K of debt, which I do, so yeah. May as well wait and see if I can get that, too. :smile But yeah, hard work DOES pay off, even if it seems like you can be stymied sometimes. Just don't give up, and keep at it. Persistence pays off. :yes

Yes jobs can indeed be fun and enjoyable. In fact, if you start dreading going to work, it's time to get another job. From what I read, you should ultimately find a job that you enjoy doing, enjoying going there for, whether it is helping people survive accidents, helping animals get new homes, building houses, being an author, etc. The idea that jobs aren't supposed to be fun is, far as I'm concerned, an old idea that needs to be stomped out.

I used to shoot chickens out of cannons at airplanes...

In truth, I had training in the culinary arts world, receiving an AOS degree, then got a total of 8 months of work experience in 3 jobs.

It's tough to find a half-way decent cooking job where I live, and I can't afford to go anywhere else.  So now I'm learning to develop a small-scale farm to earn some money.  It's taken me 3 years to try and fix our raised garden, but this is the year I should be ready to make some cash crop.

I graduated with my degree in Fall 2010, and my dream career is to be a park ranger with the National Park Service (NPS).  My specialty would be presenting programs and campfire talks, kind of like teaching in the outdoors :).  Due to the recession, no new hires were made last year, but this year they're posting a lot of jobs and hope to have the hiring freeze lifted by February.  I really hope they do, 'cuz I'm ready to get out there and start my dream career for good :D.

As for current employment, I am very fortunate to work for a very good company.  I work for Trader Joe's, and I basically do everything but manage the place :lol.  Talk about a fun place to work, and the benefits, even for part-time employees, are far greater than that of most other employers.  And, they prefer to hire people with a college education, so it's not nearly as undermining as many other corporations.  At the same time, I keep applying for NPS jobs and some state park jobs that have started to open as well :yes.

I work as a bakery sales clerk at the local Superstore. Pretty much all I do is prepare the baked product for sale, and make sure the sales floor stays presentable. I've been working there for nearly five years now, and am quite happy with it  - good hours, decent pay and a good team on both sides of the department. If i wanted to, I could apply for  (and, from what I've heard, would probably get) a supervisory position, but if my calculations are correct (and no major changes are made to our collective agreement) I can be making about the same in three or four years of doing what I'm doing now.

I'm a web programmer. The notion that work isn't supposed to be fun, is definitely untrue in my case.

I usually program HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL, Actionscript... and that kind of stuff. A little design here and there, sometimes, but I usually prefer programming. I like the "real" languages like PHP and Actionscript the best, but a lot of what I end up filling my time with is more everyday stuff like data entry, blog maintenance and SEO. Which doesn't quite satisfy my code addiction.  So after work is done, I often end up spending my free time making add-ons for games like Creatures 3 or The Sims.

Hmm...well, I'm working quite hard to hopefully become a singer and musician, as well as a voice actor. I have loved singing for as long as I can remember, and I've been playing instruments such as guitar and drums, among other things.  I'm also very good at doing cartoon voices (as well as some celebrity, though I prefer doing cartoons). In fact, I can do decent impressions of Petrie and Spike, among other LBT characters.

So yeah, at least something in entertainment is good enough for me, just like C is for cookie!

Well I can now proudly state that I am a tour director for not one but now two tour operators. :smile I've met my goal from last year, and I can only go up from here. :smile Current career goals include getting lots of experience leading tours this spring/summer, and then, in August, I'm gonna try my hand at getting in with a major tour operator that I've had my sights on for a few years now. :smile If I can't get in with them, I'm definitely going to be offering to lead international tours with one of the tour operators I'm currently employed by, as that would be a fantastic way to gain international tour directing experience. :smile

I'm still in school at the moment, but after joining Air Cadets and talking to some pilots at a School's Career's Day, I definitely want to be a commercial pilot. I love flying, and after having an Air Experience Flight last Saturday, I'm positively certain that it's something I want to do. ;)

That sounds awesome, Rammy! So happy for you! :DD

I'm currently where I want to be, and most likely have wanted to be since I graduated - a child care center, working with the wee little toddlers. It's not exactly the age-group I had in mind, but they keep the day interesting and can darn near melt your heart with everything they do^^

I work at the RSPCA currently. The pay is awful, but it is one of the most rewarding jobs.

I'm an animal care worker so I stay at the shelter and care for the animals we have  in,I don't go out and do all the rescue stuff. I also sometimes work at the adoption counter-it hard letting them go cause you do get attached to them, but it is for the best and we do even go out and do a home check and see where the animal will be kept before we let them take it home,we want to make sure our animals will get the care they need.

It's a hard job but also one of the most rewarding jobs there is.

My dream job is a horse related career.

I really want to be a Jockey but it will be highly difficult.

Female jockeys really don't get many chances as male jockeys do,horse racing tends to be a male sport and thats one of the reasons it's called the Sport of Kings, though the main reason is way back in the dinosaur age, only the ones very high and society were allowed to own and run a racehorse...I would be a woman in a sport dominated by men..sigh...but there are female jockeys out there..so in can be down if we get given a chance.

Also I don't think my parents will approve of that choice..

Horse Racing is ranked the worlds most dangerous sport..then again basically any type of riding is ranked that. Other people get hit in the head by a ball..I get thrown off a 1100 pound animal going 55MPH..what a lovely choice of sport I have made. My Mother wishes I took up volleyball instead of riding but whatever :lol

If that fails..which it most likely will. I want to get my dog grooming licence and open up my own place,it would be kinda cool..owning my very own business while my brother works at the McDonalds counter..he he he. And he said I wouldn't get anywhere in life, and I have a real career in animal welfare, and he works at a fast food place.

I also want to become an Author and write my own series. I've been writing original stories since I was 7 years old,I find it way easier then FanFiction because when I write Original stories,I can create my own world and nothing is already set such as character traits, places in the world etc etc.

I actually did write a novel last year..though I have the one and only copy,am thinking of posting it online though as I still have the files and that for it.

So to sum it up.

Current Job:
Animal Welfare (RSCPA)

Dream Career:
Jockey
or
Dog Groomer
or
Author

I'll figure it all out,no need to rush myself. Got the rest of my life to figure things out.

For the past 3 years, my job has been bagging groceries and cleaning at a grocery store. It's not the greatest, but it's better than having no job at all, though. :(

It's part-time and the pay is only $8.75 per hour. about $14,000 per year for me.  And i'm not a high-school aged teenager. I am 25 years old now. I still feel that I have made no real progress since 18. And that the last 7 years have been a total waste (other than moving to Florida 4 years ago.)

I just hope I can get a better paying job in the future to get my life going better. :( I definitely do not earn enough money to live on my own, and i'm still with my mom and dad. :(    I'm sorry, guys. I feel bad. My one life is passing me up year by year. :( I do not like the direction my life is going in now. :( Yeah living in Florida is great, but not having my own car, or having enough money to live on my own, and never having a full time job ever before, really sucks.

I'm still living with my parents. I have no real in-person friends, i've never had a girlfriend either and I feel that my life is passing me up, and that i'm losing at the game of life. :( I feel bad and really behind. And when i'm at home, I still do feel stuck and that I can only do things my parents approve of as long as i'm still living with them.

Guys,   I  am     just.           plain.          sorry.    :(

I feel that 2008-2014 have been 7 wasted years of my 1 life that I will never get back.

I think that "normal" 25 year old guys do live on their own, have decent jobs, have friends, and some even have girlfriends.

As some of you already know, I'm a computer repair technician with a successful business.  But lately I've been looking to find a job where I can live where I want to (not in the city) and still be able to make it.  So I've started a natural health products website.  I scored an awesome domain name, registered as a legitimate business (LLC), I have a wholesale license, and I'm really hoping this will be a good business for me.  I'm still working on the website, but if you guys want to take a look:

www.findnatural.com (http://www.findnatural.com)

For now it's a drop shipping business, but I'm hoping to take the most popular products and buy them in bulk so I can lower my prices and be more competitive.  It's not 100% functional yet as I still need to integrate my bank account so I can process credit cards.  I've already set up the SSL certificate (https) and everything functions okay.  But as always, Internet Explorer compatibility is an absolute B****.  I also need to modify the responsiveness a bit more (so it's compatible with smartphones).  But so far, everything is going pretty well.

I work as a Sales Associate at Walmart.  I've been working there for 9 years, and it is a job I hate!  From customers treating you like crap to managers that want to make you do every job under the sun away from your assigned area, (I've even told a few of those managers "no" just to make sure they don't go into the area of "enslaving me".) thus making it less likely you can get the work you have in your assigned area done, it proves to be nothing more than a bad job.

It's even worse now, with one of the workers getting very sick and I am assigned to cover for them. (The individual has been on sick leave for 4 weeks now.) Add in the head who is an idiot and makes terrible business decisions, and you can see just how bad and frustrating it gets.

My dream is to get out of my job.  That simple.  I just hate it that much.

I don't care about the money I make.  I just want out at this point.

I understand that I need the money to pay the bills, but even that isn't mattering right now.  I wouldn't care if I was someone in my 30s living with my parents.  I'd be okay with it in the end. -_-

^Jeesh, that's rough Pokeplayer.  I don't even like to SHOP at Walmart, let alone WORK there!  Nightmare job.  My Great Aunt works at Walmart, and get this......it's by choice.  She loves working there.  How that's even possible, I'll never know.  She was a computer engineer back when computers were the size of a room. She retired but got bored after a year or two and decided to go work at Walmart.  I know she didn't do it for financial reasons.  Her memory isn't what it used to be and she sadly didn't keep up with her education, otherwise I'm sure she'd still be a computer engineer.  Computers were sooooooooooo different back then.  Seriously, when she describes how the old computers worked I get totally lost. :p Vacuum tubes.  LOL

I'm trying to find a job but I haven't had much luck.

If I'm lucky, I might get a job as an associate microbiologist at a pharmaceutical company. Failing that, there's an industrial manufacturing job at a biological supply company I applied to.

Failing that, there's pharmacy clerk or pharmacy technician at a nearby supermarket.

I can sympathise with that.
For the rest of the month I still got a job as "Fachbereichsleiter f¸r den Bereicht Fremdsprachen an der Volkshochschule M¸nster" which could be roughly translated as "head of the department of foreign languages at the Volkshochschule M¸nster" (Volkshochschule being an education center for adults). I had gotten that job in August but was told that I cannot keep it due to lacking "in-job experience" though the employers admitted that they had known about experience (or lack of it) from my CV and couldn't answer the question on how "in-job experience" can be acquired outside the job :neutral
Applying since 2009 with (by now) three different university degrees highschool diplomas from both Germany and the US, four years of working experience as a lecturer on provisionary basis and lots of internships I cannot deny that there is a degree of frustration about the apparent unwillingness of any institution to grant an insured job.
So basically my job comes down to working on provisionary basis as a lecturer on history for five different education institutions. I love the job as such and there is nothing making me so ecstatic as holding history presentations, but without the insurances covered it is simply nothing to base ones life on. I am not striving for much money, I don't need a car or the most fashionable / modern pieces of technology or anything, but turning on the heating in winter without great concerns or going for some nice supper without a look at the bill all the time would be a nice improvement.

I looked back on this thread to see what once was (about three years ago) and what is now.

Same as my last response--I still teach teenage special needs students, though I now work with much more behavioral, challenging students than I was with the three or four years ago.  Job's gotten harder and more stressful, yet here I still am, seven years in and still there. :)  Is it a dream job--well, the stress is a killer here, and its definitely taken its toll on me over the years, but I can't complain with the financial independence I've had for those seven years.  To leave that would be silly, even if it was for a less stressful job at this stage in the game.

I deliver newspapers and have been doing so since late August 2005. The pay sucks; but, it's better than nothing. Although to make it worthwhile, I have to do at least four routes. Stress is a major thing for me; especially when the papers arrive late. Thursdays are the worst; sometimes I don't get them until 3:30 in the afternoon. Finishing deliveries takes me until at least 9:30 at night on Thursdays; that is, unless I skip eating my dinner.

I'm currently in the midst of changing careers.  My dream career did not work out for the long-run due to lack of promotion potential and increased budget slashing.  As much as I hate to say it, it seems that only the biggest brown-nosers get the secure jobs, and I'm not that kind of person.  At least I've gotten the opportunity to make my dreams become reality after many doubted my decisions☺.

I truly believe everything happens for a reason.  Just as my now former career has come to an end, a more personal one that I feel is true to my calling has presented itself: working with and advocating for the disabled community, with an emphasis on autism.  I have been presented with an opportunity to apply for a position in which I, if selected, will direct all recreational activities for an active ASD community, train and supervise their caregivers, empower them to strive for independence, and advocate for their employment opportunities.

As I said, it's not a sure thing as I just applied, so I don't want to jinx myself😉.  I sure hope it falls through.  Either way, I'll keep you guys updated.

As fun as high school can be, it can also be tough, especially if you're one of the kids who always get picked on it seems.  Be patient and hang in there.  The real world is a lot more of a blast, and also comes with more responsibilities but it's worth it.  My twenties were such a blast, and it'll be awesome to see what thirty brings into my life☺.

Just about to finish my first semester studying chemistry at university  :lol

Funny how fast two years pass...

I've long since quit chemistry. I'm in training (or to use a more old fashioned word, in a scholar apprenticeship) for the same job cyberbat is working (see above posts). A medical lab assistant. I've started my second year this fall. We learn the theory at school and practise the methods and tests to the abilities we have at our school and the labs we have. It's very interesting and starting 2019 I'll actually get paid (going on strike in April helped to get our apprenticeship paid at last! :D)
My 3rd year will be practical in nature as I'll have internships in all areas (hematology, cytology, microbiology etc.). Looking forward to it :)

I drifted around a LOT after finishing my microbiology degree, mostly in pursuit of affordable insulin. The last two years have allowed me to become a QC Reviewer for cell laboratory tests, and to be honest I couldn't be happier with it. The stability and the pacing is perfect for me, and I'm able to redesign processes and, for the first time, to have a real impact on the environment around me. I just got promoted this week, and as someone who's struggled a LONG time to keep going, it's relief to know I have a spot. =)

I would love to become a Marine Biologist as my future career. I'm in love and fascinated by Orcas! The more I watch them on Youtube, the more intrigued I am! I hope I specialize in possibly studying, interacting, and playing with them in the open ocean one day! I hate seeing them locked up at Seaworld, I do I do! Hmm but also, the intricacies of mangroves also fascinate me. A forest of them creates a diverse and sustainable habitat for a variety of organisms which is just awesome. The fact that it can also survive in such a harsh place where most plants wouldn't thrive amazes me. While I do have many choices, seems like I'm narrowing it down already. But then again, I'm still in my first year of high school, so my choice could change. So let's see what happens.

I'm very glad to hear that. I've heard many people get stuck with a job they hate, but have no choice in the matter because they need it to support themselves or their families. I think though that education would be the first step towards acquiring a job that you love.

Aboslutely nothing (ok, maybe only 5%) I learned in school or university helped me to study things I use in my job or in my free time. (I studied programming and English almost by myself, at free time)

Yes. Only positive memories I have about school and university times are about wonderful times with my classmates, funny situations, and other live stuff that happened there. :)
But absolutely everything about actual study was... :/
II didn't have problem with study. I had almost perfect marks. But the thing is - education system took 14 years of my life, and it MADE me study it against my will. :/
And at the end, nothing of that I use right now.

I concur with you about the friends aspect of school. Honestly, if I had the choice to stay or leave forever and never come back, I would choose the latter. The only reason I would come back is for my friends. But then again, we could all meet up at a different location anyways. :p

But back on topic. I've always wondered why for 12 years of being in school, we are forced to learn so many useless things which we will end up forgetting over the summer break just to be retaught some of it again. I honestly believe that most of the basic skills that are useful and necessary are learned in elementary. Why don't they let you choose your own path starting in Middle School? If that's too early, then why not High School? If you already have an idea of what you're interested in, take classes that dictates to your needs. As you may know already, our education system is outdated and just raises children to become good factory workers, but not inventive and inspired people. Every individual is not the same, and we all learn and work at a different pace. I'd like to share both this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqTTojTija8) and this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xe6nLVXEC0), as it illustrates my (and many others) perspective quite perfectly.

Learning can be fun, but it depends on the person and the method in which the information is being delivered.
But yeah, it feels that I've learned much more on the internet than school has ever taught me.

I'm grateful for the many awesome teaches I've had through all the years of school so far, with only boring teaches at worst. But that's not saying too much, since they're nice as well. The use of anecdotes, videos, songs, acting, and just their sheer personalities are just the many ways that my teachers have made the experience as fun as it could be. Trust me, they also realize how boring and redundant school can be. After all, they had to go through the same torture we are in right now. :)

So, here we are again.  Now, I do still work at Walmart.  However, I have changed jobs.  I work as a Cap Team 1 Associate.  This job requires you to get up VERY early.  I have start work at 4 AM.

I am in charge of getting stuff out of the back room and stocking the shelves in the grocery area.  Some days I do Pets, Pharmacy, Health & Beauty, Paper Goods & Chemicals.  Plus, most recently added to our job responsibilities, Infants.  Now mind you, I am not in this alone.  I'm part of a team.

Basically, we start by getting the Dairy deliveries done.  This can range from one pallet to 5.  Some days, you get a bad day and have to do 8.  Trust me, if you get that many, you won't have time for anything else.  Yes, we do get breaks and lunches and they are required by law.  However, when you can get to them is another story.

After that, we are assigned to different areas to work.  You scan stuff out of the back room and fill it up with the stuff it tells you to.  If there are openings that the system missed, or more often, a request by a customer, you can head back and grab the stuff you need, without scanning it out.  You just need to make sure to inform your manager of the small change that needs to be made to the system and why.  Trust me, it makes more mistakes than you think.  A lot of little mistakes that definitely need correcting.

This does not apply to Frozen, which is the same as Dairy, just with colder stuff.

If you somehow get done after all that and still have time, you are assigned to do what's called Top Stock.  This is where you take a special ladder cart and bring stuff down from the very top shelf to it's home below to fill the space.  Also to fix up the top shelf as there are those who don't follow protocol and make it look like a mess up there.  It's annoying when it happens.

At the last half-hour to hour of the shift, we are assigned to take carts to the other side of the back room so Cap Team 2 can do their thing.  It's the most recent thing added.  We got a new machine to make it much smoother.  A part of me wants to see it in action, but I'm not going back to my old job anytime soon.

This job is better than the old one, no question.  In my one year, I have been less stressed out, less taken away by enslaving managers, (In fact, they need to have permission to take me, period.) also, less customers that mistreat you.  It seems most, if not all, of the bad actors come later in the day.  The customers I do get are much nicer and most just want help.  They don't even talk down to you.  This is the way it should be.

Of course, I still want to leave Walmart.  It sadly has a lot of baggage.  Also, there's a medical reason for it.  Every day, I have to put up with twinges of pain I get from my feet.  Also, special orthodontics for my feet subscribed by a doctor aren't doing much.  Yes, they help, but not enough.  If it wasn't for this problem, I would actually stay.

I've been enjoying it while it lasts.  I'll stay as much as I can, but these medical reasons will not make me stay in end.  It'll be a sad end to something I enjoyed.

I might as well update my own situation, as it’s been some time since I graduated from college, so a lot has definitely happened. I have discussed about this in the Discord server, but obviously as not everyone on the forum are on there, naturally they have no idea over the developments in my life. So, as of late July, I began my long service in the civil service. For those who do not know what civil service exactly is, it is an alternative option for those who do not wish to complete their military service here in Finland. Yes, it is mandatory here for males, and any females who wish to. And while I initially actually planned to complete my own service in the military, my personal reasons later changed my opinion. Therefore leading to my decision to complete the civil service instead.

The civil service consists of two parts altogether: the training period (1 month long) and the working period (approximately 10.5 months long). I have already done my training period, which began in late July. Currently I am performing my working period in my previous college, and while the building is different compared to the one I used to study in, I already know my way around very well. The work so far has been quite nice, and my tasks roughly translate to being that of a caretaker. I basically do whatever is asked of me.

It has been going quite nicely thus far, even if I sometimes have to deal with recalcitrant students who do not appear to accept civil service as a form of service by any means. Quite saddening, really, but what can you do to change another person’s opinion? Practically nothing, so I just roll with it. I have approximately 9 and a half months left on the job, and after my service is complete, I have no plans yet made as to what I am going to be doing. I’ll be taking one day at a time. After all, what’s the hurry?

Someday, once I take my Computer Technology class, I want to have the knowledge I need to open an independent video game studio and make a new game that is inspired by other game (or maybe an original idea).

These days I'm a video editor for this guy (https://www.youtube.com/c/BrendonBurchardMotivation/videos) (pretty much every recent video on that channel was sourced, edited, and titled by me). I also chop up the episodes to turn into promos for his Instagram and Facebook pages, and create the thumbnails in Photoshop. It's a pretty fun job that lets me hone my skills for my own creative projects. I'm super relieved and grateful he hired me despite having no credentials beyond my own YouTube channel, I don't want to think about how badly the pandemic would have destoyed me had I still been freelancing when it broke out.

I'm not suprised, your submissions for the LBT7 project are awesome! Do you have any tips for how to break into that field? I've got some minor voice-acting gigs (https://aabicus.com/voice-acting/) but have been completely unable to translate them into paid work.

Thank you! :duckyhappy

It took me a while as well. I've voiced characters in some decently popular YouTube series for years now, but I only recently went on sites like Voices and Voices123 where there's paid gigs to audition for  :CeraHAPPY

My current position is a Server at a catering company. We handle black tie affairs and cocktail parties for well-to-do clients. That means that we must serve at the highest standard of service at all times. I have several years of experience providing wait service at such events.

Security guard. During day shift I sit in my "office", and check, who gets in area of the company, I communicate with drivers, visitors, who go inside, and make many phone calls to people inside for example, when someone has a deliver for them, or needs them. Regularly I meet foreign drivers, I like Polish drivers, because I learn this language, and it is a good opportunity to use it, some foreign drivers speak also english, worst kind of drivers are those, who cannot speak any languages that I speak, and I have to still tell them, where to go, and other things. But majority of drivers are still Czech.

I also do patrols, sometimes I check few cars, when they are leaving, and check something inside building, if it is alright, but checking building, and patrols are only on night shifts.
When no one is coming for a while, I do my own stuff, browse the internet, watch something, etc.

In the future, I want to be a receptionist at some international hotel, or company, where I will regularly meet a lot of foreigners, and with better wage, than security guard. Here in Czechia, security guard is a very low paid job, and I plan to find a better job in next two years.

Currently I'm in my final year of undergraduate studies for a major in Materials Science and Engineering, with minors in Physics and Mathematics. My long-term goal is to get a PhD, though my specific graduate path remains uncertain. What I do know is that my primary research interest lies in computational materials science: specifically, applying deep neural networks to solve difficult or even intractable problems for conventional simulations. I am currently doing a senior thesis project on using a convolutional neural network to predict the fission gas flux of a nuclear fuel sample given a 2D image of its microstructure, and I hope to continue this avenue of research from there. I have been programming since I was 11 years old and combining it with my knowledge of materials science could provide a powerful interdisciplinary approach to finding novel solutions for the field.

I will admit that my interest in this isn't purely science-related: I realized that neural network architectures could also revolutionize a lot of aspects of 2D animation or animation as a whole. As someone who would like to see this artform revived but has little drawing skill, I think it would allow me to contribute in my own way. I could get a patent out of this if nothing else.

As for my dream job, I have wanted to work at NASA or at some other US national research agency like Livermore since I was a kid. However, I am willing to settle for more independent research. Fortunately, the line of computational materials science does not always require access to high-end lab equipment like materials science in general requires, which gives me more options for employment.
