I've heard some justifications for why lawyers ask a lot of seemingly unnecessary questions. Apparently, attorneys, and anyone in court ask questions about specific facts to be answered out loud by the defendant or witness. This is so there are no "assumptions" or people hiding behind rough words, or meanings. So they can catch people lying when stories fall apart, because they can't keep every tiny detail in check, usually.

However, a lot of these go beyond that straight into "Seinfeld" territory.
