Title: DarkWolf's Fanart Thread
Post by: DarkWolf91 on February 10, 2009, 11:38:22 PM
ARTIST'S NOTE 8/3/2017: This thread is currently under reconstruction due to Photobucket issues. If you would like to view the art on this thread for now, please go to page 16, or use this link:http://z7.invisionfree.com/thegangoffive/i...pic=5095.300 (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=4874.300)

I've bee meaning to start one of these thingies for forever... But between doing lots of homework, being in college and getting sick, there hasn't been much time to spare lately :(
But if I don't start one of these I'll forget! So heeeere we are! The beginning of my ongoing fanart thread!
For now just a quick doodle of Cera... Nothing too epic or extravagant, but at least she looks characteristically peeved :lol
I might do some fanfic illustrations, if I get permission from a few authors.
You'll probably see a lot of Mo and Shorty art out of me, eventually. I've always though Shorty has a lot of unexplored potential. I have a great idea for a fic, but I'm not much of a writer. Ah well, might do it anyways :D Oooh, or maybe a messy comic of sorts.

Lovely! Seriously, her expression is awesome. It made me (unlike her) smile because it befits her so well ;)
I also like the background style with its lack of sharp edges. Also you did a very good job creating a grassy surface without using the grass blade shaped brush tool. No kidding, I had to take a close look before determining if this was a scanned painting or done with photoshop.
Which subjects are you studying at the college?

Wow, thanks Malte! That's quite a complement :) While technically I'm double majoring in Animation and Game Design, my curriculum so far has mostly been dominated by foundations courses, such as those in Drawing, Design, Color Theory and the likes. Which is good. A strong foundation never hurt anyone, haha.

Hey! Had a really crazy day today. Between hurriedly scanning other things for a late class project I managed to sneak this in and figured I'd post it here :)
Trying to work out species and character design for one of the characters in an LBT fan fiction/fan comic that I might someday possibly write :p
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/DarkWolf91/dinos.png)
Oh, and today I did a double-take while walking past my neighbor's dorm. Guess what picture they had taped to their door?
http://www.freewebs.com/thelandbeforetime01/08532-2.jpg (http://www.freewebs.com/thelandbeforetime01/08532-2.jpg)
Haha. I know it was probably part of some practical joke, but it was still nice to see LBT referenced in the most unlikely place :D

Hello:
Those drawings are very cool!, I specially like the last one and the first one (in that order :D ). The last one made my think in a cooler way to imagine one of my newest custom characters (a Flyer called Rhamphy in one of the rpgs), better than the canon of Rinkus' species (which my OC is based on).
Keep it up, I really like tham and good luck with the comic :DD .

As for the picture on the neighbors dorm, did you ask about it? May there, even if it was a joke, a reference that may be of interest to you?
Title: DarkWolf's Fanart Thread
Post by: DarkWolf91 on May 16, 2009, 07:23:55 PM
Ah, I meant to ask for the longest time... But I guess I'm just too shy

Anyways, this quarter's been crazy, but since I just finished a major project I figured I'd give myself some time off to scan some doodles  :D
These (excluding the Shorty head and the picture of the flyer at the very bottom) are from last quarter, when I wasn't completely comfortable with LBT style yet... Plus they're non-referenced pen sketches, so nothing too fancy, haha. But my next post will have something a little more complete!(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/DarkWolf91/lbtpg2.jpg)
This next page contains the Spinosaurus Pino from Babidikrakenguard's fanfic. I still need to do a finished drawing of her!(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/DarkWolf91/LBTpg1.jpg)(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/DarkWolf91/LBTpg3.jpg)

Hello:
Your sketches are very good, I am happy to see a Spinosaurus in a more friendly way (I can't guess he may be Chomper-ish, but I see no reason why they wouldn't be friendly with family, friends and hunt-partners).
Redclaw is just hillarious in that pic :lol .

Really awesome drawings! :yes
Even in the very small drawings (the size can be recognized from the lining) you included a lot of detail and interesting expressions. The Chomper in the first of the drawings for example has a very subtly sheepish look. Is he up to some mischievous? Do you think of little stories for your drawings?
Redclaw with a cup of tea, I wonder if it is his or not his cup of tea to have a cup of tea :lol

http://z7.invisionfree.com/thegangoffive/i...ic=4670.1280 (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=4458.1280)
Looking back I'm not exactly sure why I gave him a cup of tea... But I was planning on drawing Screech and Thud jumping at a disco ball in the backgroud, so that's where that came from :lol

Yes, I usually think of a situation the character has been in or may yet be in when I draw them :)
And hmm, I don't know... He might be more keen on the idea if somebody would find him a bigger cup :smile

Oaaaaaoaaaaaaaagh!
Sorry guys! I can't tell you how much I miss this place!
I had to get a full time job. Between that, physical training and keeping up with my art, I'm completely swamped! Not to mention the fact that I still don't have internet at home :cry

But I managed to scribble a quick doodle of petrie... in MS Paint... on a laptop touch pad :lol

Nice looking Petrie, considering how you did it.  Nice and simple background.  & he does look tired.  I guess from the fact he looks tired and the position of the sun it could be morning or evening.

Here are some quick pen doodles with colored pencil I did after work, plus a bonus drawing of Littlefoot's head. The only thing referenced was Cera's crest, so sorry if they look a little off *cough*littlefoot*cough*  :p
And I know I've drawn Cera with a different expression before! I'll have to remember to do it again sometime, haha. She's just so fun to draw irritated :lol

Those are awesome! :wow Way better than anything I could do from memory!

I LOVE Cera’s expression. :lol That’s an interesting pose you drew her in, too. And the drawing of Littlefoot’s head is really, REALLY good. :yes His snout looks a bit angular (more so on the side closer to the edge of the image), and his neck thicker, with a ridge on the back that Littlefoot doesn’t actually have, but otherwise his anatomy and expression are spot on with how they look in the movies. (And let me reiterate that this is far beyond anything I could do myself without reference.) Good work! :D

I must admit your art is highly impressive, and to see you working with pen instead of Pencil is a show of true skill in my book. I am also greatly inspired by your accuracy at portraying both Littlefoot and Cera's expressions, just like in the movies.

Ah, thank you so much! I really appreciate the encouragement!
I have most definitely wanted to draw out a complete scene. The main obstacle to this that I face has been a lack of free time. But I have a little something of that nature in the works, and after September I will be unemployed, so there will probably be an influx of art from me :smile

Wow, high praise indeed! Thank you! I have been challenging myself to work in pen for some time now. It's quite useful on-the-go, and it keeps me from over-thinking things, which is very tempting in art :smile
Now after having done it for so long, it's sort of become my choice method.

Yet again, thank you all so much for the comments!

Here's a picture I promised Babidi I'd do aaaaaages ago! It's about time I finished! About time I did a semi-clean drawing, too :lol But, alas, these things take time.
The first sketch didn't turn out quite how I wanted, so I did another one. I ended up finishing them both anyways, though :p
Tried to take a minimalist approach to shading like the one found in the films. Also took design pointers from the Spinosaur in LBT 12, to try to give her a slightly more official look. Hopefully I'll start finishing some full-fledged scene illustrations soon!

Okay, I admit it; I DO have some constructive criticism for the artwork (not that it should be considered any less outstanding; trust me, no matter how excellent something is, I can ALWAYS find something to nitpick :p), but I'm not going to share it unless you want me to, DarkWolf. -_-

Again, AWESOME work. The expressions, the colors, the eyes (I particularly like the way the eyes look), everything. Seriously, if Universal ever started making LBT movies or TV episodes again (we wish :rolleyes), they should hire you as a concept artist. :yes

Okay, then; can't say I didn't warn you! :p

In the drawing on the left, Pino’s right leg looks to be in a very odd position, as if it is twisted at an angle diagonal to her body (ouch :o).

In the other picture, her right hand has three fingers, but her left appears to have only two. Her right leg also looks somewhat malformed, with no distinction between her thigh and her shin, and the connection of her shin to her ankle looks a little...strange. Additionally (and I suppose this could be considered more of an artistic preference), her toes and the claws on them make her feet look more like paws than what you would find on a sharptooth. Finally, the bunched skin on the underside of her tail looks somewhat like a pair of protruding lumps, rather than the flexion wrinkles I assume you were going for.

I can’t decide which image I like better, though. The non-outlined stripes on the left image look more natural, and the segments of her sail are angled slightly, such that they look more like the sail on the LBT XII Spinosaurus. I therefore prefer the left-hand drawing as far as those features are concerned. However, apart from the issue with the number of fingers, I like the arms on the right image better, and the same may go for the spines on her neck and tail. The heads, eyes, and expressions of both drawings are equally excellent. :D

I also love how you’ve managed to make Pino look so appealing, without distorting and infantilizing her proportions the way LBT typically does when it wants to design a “cute” sharptooth character, such as Chomper, or the hatchling fast biters in “The Great Egg Adventure”. In both cases, the characters have features like an oversized head and feet, stubby legs and tail, etc., which cause them to barely resemble their parents at all. Pino, by contrast, is relatively close in her overall proportions to an adult sharptooth, and yet you still just want to run up and hug her! :DD

Yes, I caught that. It's one of the reasons I wasn't happy with the one on the left. Though most of the reasons were fixed with white-out :p

Yeah... I was trying to have her thumb-ish finger out of sight on the left hand, behind the other fingers, but it is a bit iffy.

Quote

Yes, I noticed this as well. That variety of leg is tricky from 3/4 view(as you can see, I didn't get it quite right :smile ), and I've been having a spot of trouble lately with LBT style feet and ankle connections. I actually had to re-do both sets of feet, and still didn't get them quite right :slap

Actually, the toes and claws were pulled straight from the design of the Spino in XII! I must say I'm not too fond of them myself. Kind of nice, but not really sharptooth material. I probably won't use them on Spinos in the future. As for the flexion wrinkles... Yeah, I get lazy with those :oops I'll pay more attention to them in the future!

Yes, I was quite disappointed with the sail on the righthand image, which was part of the reason that I ended up finishing both drawings :yes Thanks so much for such an in-depth critique of my drawings, Pangaea! I really enjoyed reading it!

^ Ah, thank you!
Actually I'm glad that you mentioned her proportions, because they're something I thought about a lot!
I kind of figured that Chomper and the baby Fastbiters' proportions may be exaggerated so much simply because of how young they are, as Tricia's design seems to follow the same principles. To be honest, I was kind of disapointed to see that Chomper's design didn't reflect any aging in LBT V, but I guess it's a bit much to ask from a series that tends to ignore aging on the whole :smile
I didn't know exactly what age Pino was meant to be, but I really preferred to draw her around the GOF's age. It's a bit more challenging, and I don't think we've yet seen any sharpteeth that age in LBT, as of yet(the closest, of course, being Chomper).

I do commend you for trying to give Pino the correct number of fingers for a Spinosaurus. (By the way, if you REALLY want to be accurate, Spinosaurus is thought to have had a large, hooked claw on its thumb that it used to spear fish. It’s a feature that’s commonly omitted in non-scientific depictions of this dinosaur, though, so you’d be forgiven for not including it.)

Considering that I was looking at screenshots of the LBT XII Spinosaurus to compare with your drawings BEFORE I commented on them, I can’t believe I didn’t notice that! :slap I wonder why the LBT people designed it that way, anyway. You’d expect that they would just use the same design as the T. rex feet. As far as your future spinosaur artwork goes, I’d suggest just using the same foot design as your left-hand drawing of Pino, but with slits on the upper surfaces of the feet to indicate the spaces between the toes. (I’d advise the same to the LBT animatorsóor whoever’s in charge of designing sharptooth feet. :p)

Also, about dinosaur legs and feet (LBT and otherwise)...they are a MAJOR pain to illustrate. As far as I’m concerned, they’re the hardest dinosaur body parts to draw. Your difficulty in getting them rightóas well as your subsequent dissatisfaction with themóis completely understandable.

Even with the flaws, this ranks highly among my favorite LBT-related artistic works. (I’m too indecisive to have a single favorite, :p but if I had to choose one, this would most certainly be among the contenders.) I am extremely eager to see what else your extensive artistic talent will turn out in the near future. :yes

Oh, and happy birthday, by the way. :smile

Wow, thank you Raga! It means so much to me to hear that, though it's difficult to accept such lofty praises :oops
As for the scene, I'll admit I didn't have a detailed grasp of the situation :smile The general idea is that spike is apprehensive about something, and Chomper is attempting to persuade/reassure him, while being rather unsure about the situation himself.

Ah, I fear that you're all going to give me a huge ego before long :oops
My most sincere thanks Malte, but if I am a natural at anything, it is only inflexible determination :p
I have spent many hours learning as much about drawing as possible, and many more applying that knowledge in practice. My ability to draw LBT characters stems from my(still incomplete) understanding of the long established principles underlying figure drawing, my own educated guesses in that area, and an understanding of the way in which characters are designed for animation. In regards to the latter, it's all to do with simple underlying shapes. If you can find the shapes and apply them correctly(that's the tricky part), your drawings of the character will be very accurate, or as an animator would say, "on model." Something that a lot of people take for granted is that learning to draw cartoons solely from observing other cartoons does more harm than good. Life drawing is, in my opinion, the most powerful tool in any artist's arsenal.
All that practice is the fun part, though. The biggest challenge that I had to overcome was low confidence, and the completely inaccurate inhibition that each drawing had to look 'good' or 'polished' or 'clean' before it was done.
Everyone makes bad drawings, it's unavoidable. It helps if you have fun with the bad ones, though, and see them as 'experiments' rather than 'failures,' because experiments are exactly what they are. There is a wealth of knowledge waiting in each one.
Also, no one should ever say 'I can't draw that.' You may not know how to draw it, but that hardly means that you can't!
Lastly, I have had the amazing privilege of meeting and learning from a good few fantastic teachers, whom I'll never forget. One of them announced something pretty simple that made all of the difference in the world to me:

"Once you stop trying to force your art to be what you think it should be, and just let it be what it is, things get a whole lot better."

And I've never looked back since :)

^ You're welcome. :)

As for the scene this picture could represent, it made me think of the beginning of “The Lonely Journey”, when Chomper is trying to teach Spike to find things by scent. Although Spike eventually succeeds in finding Ducky, it is implied that his earlier efforts were less successful. This could be a scene of one such failed attempt, in which Spike is feeling dejected and Chomper is trying to reassure him.

Personally I don't agree with the "learning to draw solely from cartoons" thing. I've actually heard the opposite before; that watching cartoons while learning is a good thing, because you can observe how many different animators take on different aspects of style and such.

I've never actually taken a real art class outside of the usual class stuff in elementary, middle, and high school. Much of what I learned growing up came from cartoons as well as looking at other people's work. This is how I learned; it's a method that has worked for me for years.

The first time I got what could be considered a lesson was How To Draw Fantastic Dinosaurs, where I learned how to use shapes for the first time. This helped improve my drawing skills, particularly of reptilian animals.

Watching cartoons while learning is a good thing, but I maintain that using that as your only means is extremely limiting.
There are so many questions/decisions involved in character drawing and design, and if you learn only from watching how others have already answered those questions, you are not realizing your full potential. Most importantly your ability to discover and answer those questions for yourself(and I'm not talking about the simple stuff like 'what color should it be?' or 'how big should its eyes be?'). Style is only the end product, the 'polish' of it all. At the core of the art of any skilled animator, cartoonist, or designer, there are years and years of experimentation and life drawing.

But this is all advice from, and for, someone planning to work in the field! For people who pursue drawing simply for the fun of it, just do whatever feels right. It's all about expressing oneself and having a good time, after all :)

Title: DarkWolf's Fanart Thread
Post by: DarkWolf91 on November 18, 2009, 11:58:55 AM
Ooooh, it's extremely fun, I highly recommend it! It's veeeeery difficult in the beginning, though, and there's a steep learning curve. Also it's hard to get good instruction on the matter, as it's a very broad term. Everyone has a different idea of what it should be, and there are different ways of going about it that are more benificial to different varieties of artists and different people in general. Pretty much every book on it will present a unique method.

I really love life drawing, but I couldn't stand the course I took pertaining to it. Partly because my professor was always yelling at everybody, and partly because he taught it in a way that I found extremely unhelpful and counterproductive. I thought it might just be me until I went to a workshop taught by himself and a woman who had worked as an animator and clean up artist for production of 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit.' She much more stressed capturing the percieved movement, as opposed to his obsession with accuracy(he would give us bad marks if we failed to restate fifteen second gesture drawings. I mean, I'm all for re-working drawings, but fifteen seconds is hardly enough time to even record the entire model, let alone fret over relative foot size!) Even irritating experiences like that are very good practice, though.
But oh wow, I started rambling :oops
Title: DarkWolf's Fanart Thread
Post by: DarkHououmon on November 18, 2009, 12:07:40 PM
I'm not very interested in life drawing. The only extent I knew of it was sketching/painting realistic things without much instruction on exactly how to do it. It doesn't help that I don't even like drawing realistically; I prefer the simpler looks of a cartoon. I can't draw scales or fur. I can't paint very well. I can't make something look realistic. There's just so much detail that must be put into a life drawing that just drives me nuts and discourages me from it.

Stating that life drawing could unlock my "true potential" doesn't exactly encourage me to pursue life drawing. I've never had a good experience with life drawing and it never helped me improve my drawing skills at all. It only frustrated me and it felt more like a chore than anything else. Sorry.

Realism isn't necessarily life drawing at all, though. Life Drawing is simply drawing from observation, which is why I described it as such a broad term. When practicing it for cartooning or animation, realism is not the goal in the slightest. A more common, and far more useful, goal is simply finding the object/animal/person's shapes and recording the way that they squash and stretch in natural movement, as well as the way that they connect to one another. It's also extremely useful in learning how to balance poses and portray weight. Most of the best life drawings in those respects remain simple shape, line, or mass drawings. No intricate detail required whatsoever.

As for hopefully constructive criticism I think the proportions of Ali's legs (breadth rather than length) could be worked out a little. I like the idea of Ali and Petrie interacting. Imagine some conflict between Ali, Cera, and Littlefoot, perhaps Petrie would be the best to turn to. Odd as it sounds Ducky might be too kind to be a good adviser in conflict matters. Maybe Petrie is not the best adviser either, but I imagine him to be very capable of sympathizing with Ali in such a situation (especially when it comes to quarrels with Cera).

I believe you're right about Ducky, too. She certainly has her own peculiar brand of wisdom, but to be an effective adviser I think she'd have to be a bit less ambivalent in her judgements. Oiiiiieeeee!!!!! How did I forget to comment on this?!

It’s wonderful to finally see more artwork from you, Darkwolf. :yes (I can’t believe it’s been over eight months! :o)

As usual, fantastic work! :D The background in this image is astoundingly good. This could almost be the background for a LBT film cel. The ground has the realistically patchy appearance of a dinosaur-trodden field, and the distant vegetation encroaches on the mountainsides in a very realistic manner. The waterfall, too, looks just like something out of the backdrop of the Great Valley from a LBT film.

I especially love the tree. I can never seem to draw realistic trees, but yours in this picture looks nothing short of marvelous. The bark looks unbelievably gorgeous, with the texturing and shading like what you’d expect to find on a real tree. The fact that neither the trunk nor the branches are perfectly straight gives the tree a very natural look. The technique you used for the leaves is simple, but the way they are lightest around the fringes of the crown and become darker towards the center is both realistic and beautiful.

Somehow the rocks comprising the mountains don’t look as distant as I believe you intended them to. Those on the far left, in particular, look rather close up. Nonetheless, they are incredibly natural-looking, and I absolutely love them.

The only detail of the background that I don’t really care for is the bush in the lower right-hand corner. It doesn’t seem to cast a shadow, and the leaves, especially around the edges, don’t look as good or as realistic as the tree’s, in my opinion. Still, by this picture’s standards, not as good as the rest of the background is still not bad. :yes

Great job on the characters as well. :) You’re right that, apart from Ali giving Petrie the dinosaur equivalent of a goodbye kiss at the end of LBT IV, these two really never interacted at all. I don’t believe I’ve seen a lot of fanart of Ali, but yours looks pretty good. Even if not all of the parts of her body are perfectly shaped, I thought you did excellently getting her proportions right. :yes You did a great job on her eyes as well; to me her expression looks distinctively “Ali”. Even if this picture had no color, I think her eyes would still identify her as Ali and not Littlefoot.

As for what could be changed, Malte already mentioned the legs, so I won’t spend time on them (unless you want me to mention specifically what I think could be changed, for future reference). I think Ali’s snout should be a little deeper, with more of a slope to it, and the upper corner of it looks a little too sharp to me. Maybe the the stripe leading up to her neck should be a bit wider, and the left side of her neck more curved. Finally, the bumps that form the ridge on her back should be separate, like segments, rather than all connected.

As for Petrie, he’s very good, too. I like his expression, and the way he’s holding up his wing in a gesture; it does look like he’s giving advice to Ali. :lol He appears to have only two claws on each wing, and his tail looks a little long and upturned to me, but other than that, I can’t find much to critique.

You also did a good job on the colors for both Ali and Petrie. (Have I ever mentioned how accurate you are in selecting your color palette for the characters? :wow)

Wow…comparing this to previous reviews I’ve left on your work, it’s amazing how much more comprehensive I’ve become in giving art feedback. I guess I can thank all the reviewing experience Ptyra and Sky have provided me with. :lol I hope you don’t mind the huge nitpicky review. :oops

I already mentioned this on your farewell/greeting thread in “Lands Unknown”, but have you heard that pokeplayer984 is making a LBT tribute video (and hosting a contest) featuring fans’ artwork? Maybe you could submit one of your pieces. I’m sure it would be a fantastic contribution. :yes

Anyway, again I’m glad to see another art piece from you. Hopefully you’ll be able to post more soon. :smile

Thank you so much, Sky! And Chiletrek as well :)

Oh thank you, thank you, thank you :lol
I have a huge fascination with trees. I get a lot of smart comments from my co-workers because I'm constantly staring at them :p I've spent quite a bit of time observing/doing artistic studies- there are thousands of different ways to draw a single tree! It's fantastic! I'm so glad you like the one I've rendered here!

Quote
Somehow the rocks comprising the mountains don’t look as distant as I believe you intended them to. Those on the far left, in particular, look rather close up. Nonetheless, they are incredibly natural-looking, and I absolutely love them.

Ah, yes, the rocks. I intended the ones on the left to appear much closer than those in the center, however, I neglected to correct for scale. Sooooo as it stands, the rocks in the far background would be massive, while the ones in the midground are comparatively small :bang
Ah well. You live, you learn :D

Quote
The only detail of the background that I don’t really care for is the bush in the lower right-hand corner. It doesn’t seem to cast a shadow, and the leaves, especially around the edges, don’t look as good or as realistic as the tree’s, in my opinion. Still, by this picture’s standards, not as good as the rest of the background is still not bad. :yes

AH! I completely forgot to block in that shadow! Man, that didn't even cross my mind :oops Haha, my bad.
As for its rendering, yeeeeah, it's been bothering me a bit too. It's kinda flat and distracting. Unfortunately I forced myself to say 'Enough is enough' before I could sneak into re-working it :smile

Quote
I think Ali’s snout should be a little deeper, with more of a slope to it, and the upper corner of it looks a little too sharp to me. Maybe the the stripe leading up to her neck should be a bit wider, and the left side of her neck more curved.

All very good points! I'll keep them in mind.

Quote
Finally, the bumps that form the ridge on her back should be separate, like segments, rather than all connected.

Actually, it's kinda funny, but I'm certain I knew that when I drew this. Somewhere along the line I got the 'continuous ridge' idea stuck in my head and have been drawing Ali/Littlefoot with it ever since, with complete subconscious disregard for that particular area in reference pictures :rolleyes One day I'll probably quit doing that :p

Quote
He appears to have only two claws on each wing, and his tail looks a little long and upturned to me, but other than that, I can’t find much to critique.

Whoops! I could've sworn it looked like he only had two claws when I referenced him, but upon re-checking he clearly has three. My bad :smile

Quote
(Have I ever mentioned how accurate you are in selecting your color palette for the characters? )

Why, thank you :) The color palette is a very important element for me. I usually spend a bit of time cross-cheking colors in different screengrabs and considering lighting factors before I begin. Glad it looks alright!

I hope you don’t mind the huge nitpicky review. :oops

Ah, Pangaea, I absolutely love reading your reviews! Thank you for taking the time to write them :)

Don't have time for much nowadays :bang
But here's a quick one! I was working on a more LBT-ish look for my Campylognathoides character. Might switch up a few of the colors, he looks a bit too pastel. And I'm thinking I might modify a few of the more generic 'flier' aspects of the design. Ah well, we'll see.

I love it that you’re doing more work on those character concepts you drew way back. Obviously you posted those long before I started reviewing people’s artwork on this forum, so I never told you how much I liked them, especially the three pterosaurs in this thread (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=4874&view=findpost&p=9085187). And in fact, the Campylognathoides character may have been my favorite. :^.^:

I have to agree with you about the coloring looking too pastel-y. Also, were purple and lavender always the colors you had in mind for this character? Personally I think yellow, yellowish brown, and maybe some blue highlights would look good on him. Also, in your earlier drawing, it looked like he had a stripe on the upper part of his face going past his eye. I thought it looked really good, and I think you should bring it back. :yes

To be honest, I don’t think he looks as good more heavily LBT-styled. I thought he looked cuter with the pointier beak with teeth closer to the front, and the furry neck that connected further back on the head. I’m all in favor of experimenting more with his design, maybe seeing if you can draw him with some of his original characteristics and still make him look like a LBT character. For example, the little black-and-white pterosaurs that attended Littlefoot’s hatching in the first LBT had furry necks; maybe you could look at them to get a better idea for how you could draw this feature.

I do like the spots on his wings (I think you should keep tose when you change his colors), and the wider tail vane with the patch on it (I always thought Rinkus’s was too narrow), and how you’ve drawn his feet differently from other LBT flyers’. The little crest looks good, too. Finally, just an observational comment: It looks like he’s wearing short sleeves! :p :lol

Thank you, Sky! :smile

And thank you for the suggestions, Pangaea! I agree that he doesn't look quite so good this way. I'm working with another variation on the design, and should hopefully have it up soon!
As for the colors, I wanted them to somewhat reflect his character, but the specifics of that character are still quite hazy. I was trying for something quiet and soft, which is why I went with the blues/purples. Once I finished I didn't feel like that suited him, though. Now I'm looking for something a bit more quirky. I plan on testing a bunch of variations, but I think yellow may work quite nicely!
I'm glad everyone seems to like the wingspots! I couldn't resist them :lol
The feet I'm quite happy with as well. And, hey, what do you know- he does look like he has sleeves

Quick and messy maybe, but it still looks nice! :smile (It is one of the pieces I voted for. ;))

There’s a lot going on in this picture that gets my imagination going. Petrie’s posture and expression, and the fact that he has his back to the water, makes me think that Ducky has invited him in for a swim, and he’s saying something like, “Nuh-uh! There no way me gettin’ in the water!” :lol Guido, meanwhile, looks like he’s seeing how much Ducky is enjoying herself, and is thinking, “Hey, this looks like something I might want to try!” This is evidenced by the fact that he’s on all fours at the water’s edge and seems to have a curious expression. Ducky looks like she’s having a great time, but for some reason I have the suspicion that she’s going to splash Petrie. :p

Unless Petrie’s sitting down, his tail is probably not high enough off the ground, but besides that I really can’t find much wrong with him. The capelike effect of his wings is well done, and that’s a great profile drawing of him :yes (It occurs to me that maybe the inside of his mouth shouldn’t be visible from that angle, yet I think he actually looks better this way).

Besides being hugely oversized compared to the other characters (an artifact, no doubt, of your hurriedness to complete the imageóperfectly understandable), Guido’s tail is extremely thin and his face looks a bit droopy or jowly to me, mainly along the mouth and below his right eye. Still, I really like his expression, and the way you drew his head at that angle in general. His feathers are also very good: the plume on his tail looks very close to the way it does in parts of LBT XII (confusingly, it seems to change shape at times throughout the movie :confused); I love his wing feathers, especially those on his left wing with their upward-arched angle (even though his they seem to be rather limp in the films when he’s not gliding); and while those on his head are a little too narrow at the moment (though at the front of his crest he should have a single thin, hairlike feather sticking up), I like the way you drew their positions as well. :yes

Ducky’s hand has only three fingers on it, and she doesn’t appear to have eyelashes (though I imagine you would have added them later if you’d had the time). There’s something about her head that looks a little off to me as well, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. :confused Maybe her lower jaw is too pointed. That aside, I really think you did well drawing her head (you even have the little knobby point on her beak), and I like the swimming position you put her in.

Even the sketchy opposite bank and the trees in the background look good. There’s something I really like about the tree on the far right; I think it’s the straight-but-not-too-straight trunk and the shape and positioning of the branches. Apart from that tree, the trunk angles and irregularly-shaped branches of the trees give me the impression that they are very old, and make me think that the background behind them ought to be a very dark and dense forest.

Thank you very much for posting this image. I hope you find the time to finish it someday. :)

Argh! Totally forgot to comment! :bang Sorry about that.

This version looks much better than the last one (and I’m glad you agree). :yes The new colors are a huge improvement (more on them in a moment), and I like that he looks fuzzier now. :DD And it’s great that you kept the patterns on his wings and tail vane; those still look good. He’s also much better with the fluffed-out neck. :smile You might want to make his hand claws a little pointier, and give him more distinct heels so that you can tell that he’s standing on his toes.

As for his colors, personally I think that the shade of blue that you used looks good, and like the color of his body as well. None of his colors look bad to me, though if you’re going to experiment further, I think he could look better if his wings were a little closer to the yellow end of the yellow-brown spectrum. Also, maybe it’s just me, but his beak, feet, and forearms look almost a little greenish; you might want to tone that down a bit.

While I’m glad that you brought back the markings around his eyes, I have to say they make him look a lot like he’s wearing goggles. :lol I suppose this might be considered appropriate for a flyer, :p but to make it clear that these are natural markings, I’d suggest having the blue stripe be almost as broad as the blue “spectacles” right where it meets them, and taper to a downward-curved point on the side of his head, like what you had in your original drawing (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=4874.0&#entry9085187). That version also had the stripe extending onto the beak in front, which on one hand would further lessen the appearance of the pattern as protective eyewear, but on the other hand might not work well for a LBT pterosaur whose beak is distinct from its face (though you could still try it if you wanted).

Another thing I would suggest is to round out the back of his head. I think he looks great with the highest point of his head being the area between his eyes, so you wouldn’t want to give him the kind of domed cranium that the last version had, but a gentler arc from his forehead to the base of the first fuzzy tuft on his neck, its peak being no further out than where the tip of his crest is now. Of course, in this picture it looks like he’s leaning his head forward; if his neck were straight I might advise differently. In any case, giving him a rounder head and nape would allow for more room to show his eye stripe trailing off, as well as making him look closer to both a LBT-style pterosaur and your original concept drawing.

By the way, I think Nathan is a fantastic name for a Campylognathoides! :smile I’d say you should definitely go with that. :yes I’m amazed that I never thought of that name for a creature with “gnatho” or “gnathus” in its scientific name. :!

I can't stop marveling at the tail feathers. :o You did them incredibly well. :yes (It took me ages to get those right.) And I'm impressed by how accurately you matched the color scheme. :wow

For some reason the face reminds me of Pterano or something. He looks older than the Microraptor equivalent of 22. :p It's probably the eyes (especially with that wrinkle under them that's usually associated with older LBT dinosaurs) and the corner of the mouth.

Again, it was very kind of you to draw this. Thank you very much! :DD

Sorry for not posting sooner. :oops Don't let it fool you; I’m really glad to see more artwork from you. :D

I love the color schemes on both these characters. The spots on the brother are a nice addition. :yes I also think it’s neat that you put some spines on her back. (Is her brother supposed to have spines, too, or are those bumps on top of the base of his tail just protruding folds of skin?) And as usual, the eyes are so expressive. It looks like the brother’s afraid or reluctant to go somewhere. :lol

Since you stated that these are color tests, I’m not going to bother nitpicking the physical attributes of the characters (unless you’d like me to). The background of the second picture intrigues me, however. Are those dark patches on the rocks meant to be holes, or just shadows of some kind?

I’m having a hard time coming up with name suggestions for a Diplodocus… You could call her “Doca” (although it’s very similarly spelled to “Doc”, even though the ëo’ would be pronounced differently.) Another possibility is “Carnegie”, for Andrew Carnegie, the namesake of Diplodocus carnegii. (Do you have an idea for her brother’s name yet? Maybe you could call him “Andrew”. :idea)

DarkWolf, I'm so glad you're back! :! I was beginning to worry that we'd never see you on the forum again!

You're very welcome, in regards to the feedback on your last pictures. :) Were my suggestions for names any help? As for the new picture, I'm afraid I can't come up with much to say, other than that the expression is fantastic :lol (and that however long it took for you to draw, it's a heck of a lot better than anything I could do in the same timeframe :p). Of course, since you described it yourself that as just a minor doodle, hopefully my lack of feedback doesn't matter too much in this instance. :p

So, will we have to wait another ten months to hear from you again, or will you be able to visit the GOF while you're abroad? Either way, it's great to talk to you again, however briefly.

It kinda started as a doodle, and I didn't want to leave it floating in white space, heheh.

Very nice picture! That rock looks awesome! The only thing I can say that maybe her upper mouth could be a little bigger, but maybe it's just me.I especially like the details you put in her forelegs.By the way one of the legs looks like it has a thumb on it,and i saw that in LBT too.It made me a little confused, becose I dont know when they have that "thumb".Only if the use their forelegs like hands,or also when they are just walking  or standing?Anyway,it's always pleasure to see new pictures fromyou :D .

Thanks so much! :smile
You might be right about the upper mouth, haven't quite got the shape down yet!
I think the 'thumb' only morphs into existence when they would need it, and for certain hand... well, 'foot' gestures, haha. Couldn't decide whether or not to include it here. It might look better without it

Thank you! I used a program called ArtRage for this. I started by filling the page with the brown color that you see in the cracked ground and just kind of built off of that. The sky is a bright orange and rust-red blended in with the base brown color. The trees and the character outlines are both dark purple. I did the shading on the main characters using darker and lighter versions of the base brown, and used a seperate layer to lightly add their natural colors over top of that, with a low opacity brush.

May I take this as an invitation to give you a short review of the artwork you posted in RockingScorpion's contest (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=14608&view=findpost&p=22086209) before I ask you about a request? :)

Before I talk about the artistic details, let me just try to explain why this particular artwork has drawn my attention so much. As you may or may not know (probably the latter :lol) I'm writing a fanfiction about Shorty's past (called "Shorty's Dark Past", yes I'm very creative with story titles :p). The scene you drew there could've fitted into my story very well, that's why it caught my attention so much :)
Now about the art: I always loved your art. You have a very unique and recognisable style. You're particularly good at creating backgrounds and your lineart is always spot on :)

Now, here's my request. It is a character from my fanfiction I mentioned above I would like you to draw. I guess I'll need to write a short character sheet for her if you want to draw her :p
Her name is Cho and she is one of those little Longnecks Shorty found on his journey.

if you accept, I'll write more details. Of course, if you have enough time, you could also read my fanfiction. As it is about Shorty's backstory, I thought you, being a Shorty fan, might want to check it out... :)

Thank you very much for the review! I am glad you like my art, I enjoy trying new things with it as often as possible  :smile

I would be happy to draw draw Cho! You can give me a short description of her here if you'd like, as well as a link to your fanfiction. I'm rather interested in reading it :DD
Title: DarkWolf's Fanart Thread
Post by: Ducky123 on October 18, 2015, 08:48:44 PM
Alright, first of all, here's the link to my fanfiction (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=12779). It's a bit dark here and there (especially around chapter 20) but there are also parts which are meant to be rather funny. I'm not happy with everything about the story (rushing certain parts, goofing off a bit too much here and there etc.) but I really hope you do enjoy my take on Shorty's mysterious backstory. Feel free to tell me what you like about it and what I could do better :)
Besides Shorty, there's also Littlefoot and Ali who play a major role in this story. The more recent chapters are mainly about them but that's going to change soon... It's also far from being finished... knowing you'll read it gives me new energy to keep writing  :yes

Anyway, now some details about Cho (since you're going to read the fic, I won't say too much about her to avoid telling you spoilers ;)):
As I've already mentioned, she's one of those younglings Shorty found and protected until Bron found them.
In terms of size, I thought she's about two-thirds the size of Shorty.
Her skin colour is black (or a dark grey-ish colour). Her underbelly is coloured a bit lighter than the rest of her body as it is common for all longnecks in LBT-style (I guess) but it's still quite dark.
Her eye colour is green.
She doesn't have any special things like scars or things like that.
Cho is very shy and extremely introverted but she gets angry easily if she is bullied by Shorty. She's generally very unsocial and she never had any friends until (spoiler ;)). She has a really good memory though, remembering things from her days as a hatchling even, and talks very articulated. Besides, she has a curious nature.
She's certainly a very strange dinosaur in a way. I always imagined that she has a mild form of autism. This is something I've personally never seen in a LBT fanfiction and, as I developed her character (at first she wasn't even planned, just a random character, but then I gave her more importance and now she ends up being one of the major characters...), I just had to develop her personality and this is the result.

You may draw her in any pose, situation etc. you want. Just enjoy drawing her and take as much time as you need. I'm in no hurry :yes

If you need further information, just ask :)

I haven't finished reading your fic yet (I am on pg 6 of the topic), but I happened to doodle a pic of Cho at work today. This doesn't count as your request, and I don't think this is what she'll look like in the final drawing, but I wanted to post it anyway! Did you have a specific longneck species in mind for her, by the way?
Your fic got me thinking about a Shorty fic I was writing a long time ago, so the drawings below are of two characters from that story :smile

Oh my gosh! The picture of Cho and Ali is amazing! The shading and coloring is wonderful. You got Ali's colors just right.  I love both their expressions, you can totally see their personalities in this picture. Even though I haven't read much of Ducky123's fic, I have dabbled in reading it along with skimming over some of the early post in this form.

Umm...I also saw that you mention that you were having art requests. Is it possible that you could draw one of my characters? (I have drawn my own, but I'm not the best. I can only draw side views and I fail at LBT style. Writing is more my thing).

Could you draw my Tyrannosaurs rex character, Coldbreath?

Here's his profile:
“Coldbreath” (M, Tyrannosaurs rex): Young adult. Tundra and Temperate Forest Bonecrusher Sharptooth hybrid.
Appearance: Gray with darker gray, almost black feathers on his back. They start at his head, running along his entire spine until they make a small plume of feathers at his tailtip. Lighter gray underbelly, throat, and underneath the whole length of his tail. Red eyes with a ring of brown around the pupil. Many scars.
Personality: Will not go back on a threat, cold, mocking, harsh.
Other Info: A Freeze Mythborn. Attacked Hyacinth and Orchid in the forest. Kills Blood for crushing Lily’s egg. Ripped off Impale’s left horn. Broke part of her frill off.
He lives in a snowy forest area place...

Here's a link of his picture on my DeviantART account (Please ignore the feathers on his arms and legs.): http://kittybubbles1998.deviantart.com/art...reath-562686767 (http://kittybubbles1998.deviantart.com/art/Coldbreath-562686767)

Coldbreath is in chapters 4 and 7 if your curious on how he acts in my story, or want to really know his personality played out.

Thanks a lot! :)

I hope you don't mind if I copy my dA comment on this piece of art over to here. Wouldn't want to express my lack of words twice. :smile
___

Need to calm down first as I can't hold back my wide grin.
Ok... Ok, good to go, I guess.
Where do I even start? To sum it up, two words should be enough: Spot on.

And while did in fact imagine the big scars not on Chaser's leg but his main body, I said "on his side", which includes his leg, too, of course and that's where you've put it, and that's where it looks perfect regardless.

As for the rest: I simply have nothing to say but that you have done an outstanding job in my eyes. Every little detail is there, even the ones I've added after you've already started with it.

But really, words cannot express how much I like this piece of work here. All I can say is that I can't wait for what you will come up with next. And I'm writing that while I'm still smiling.
Keep it up!
___

And of course, even if this had taken you months, my reaction would not have differed in the slightest. ;)

Absolutely amazing work, Darkwolf!  :) I think that you have captured the essence of Specter and Chaser extremely well. The juxtaposition of their brutal forms with the beautiful sky above further enhances the overall scene.  One could very easily feel the tension in the air.

Awesome work.  :)

Thanks so much for the feedback, everyone! I've been quite busy with college, so I haven't been as active here as I would like :oops
Here is a commission I did for JulianR94 of Specter and Alba in another scene from 'The Eighth Hunter.'
I also have one more request I am still working on, I haven't forgotten :smile

Absolutely beautiful, Darkwolf!  :) Though now I am a bit fearful where Julian is going to be leading his two characters based upon this illustration.  It seems that a tearful heart-to-heart talk is in their future.

To express my gratitude over this once more, I will simply copy over my dA comment:
____

You couldn't have made in any better in almost every aspect.
And what really surprises and gives me shivers again and again are your backgrounds. The level of detail, beauty but also darkness, in this case, you manage to put into them is simply magnificent.

So, all in all, I just want to say that I wouldn't have commissioned anyone else but you for such a scene, and yes, you obviously delivered and did it justice!
Certainly looking forward to your next works, commissions and requests. Other than that, and to make Rhombus relax a bit, though he should know where I'm going with those two as this is from a past chapter, 20 :lol, my head is filled with more joyful scenes, so we'll be in touch! :)

Well if we are all good I'll tell you what I have in mind.

I would like a scene from my story The Swimmer Trials. A scene featuring Ducky and one of my other Swimmer OCs Trough, he is a light brown Swimmer a year younger then Ducky and is her lover. You'll find more details if you read the story. Trough comes in at Chapter 38 I think. The scene I want is them sharing there first kiss together during a storm at the ocean. The scene you'll find in Chapter 46.

Very nice!  :) You can truly get a feel for the emotions of the scene from Ruby's and Detras's expressions.  Ruby, being weighed down by the fear of being rejected by her parents or not being believed, slumps as if the weight of the world is upon her shoulders.  Detras, on the other hand, has only now come to grips with the harsh reality of the situation.  The terrain and background also conveys the emotion of the scene, with the muted shades conveying depression, while the slight lightening of the shades by Ruby indicates that hope is present, with the direction of shading on the terrain focusing the viewer's attention on Detras's outstretched hand.  A sign of acceptance from the loving father.

Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to create this excellent drawing.  :) I would certainly be willing to discuss commission ideas if you were interested in making any further drawings in this setting.  I can be reached via my deviantart (http://the-amazing-rhombus.deviantart.com/ (http://the-amazing-rhombus.deviantart.com/)) and also via PM or email.  Let me know if you would be interested.  :)

It is just one of the many scenes from TSH I can remember quite well, and it certainly becomes even more powerful in visuals. As always, your background looks breathtaking, and the overall quality and detail is right up there with the highest standards.

Seeing this almost makes me want to burden you some more with my own ideas, but I will hold something special back for now. :)

OMG!!!!!

WOW!!! You almost have me completely lost for words for a short while there. This is absolutely amazing!

I wondered what angle you wound do here and I think it is the perfect choice. You've got the lightning in the background and the rough water's, showing the type of storm they are in The Killer Storm.

I really like how Ducky looks in this one, the surprise in her expression and blush on her cheeks just before she returns the kiss. Trough looks good here too. He looks a little different to what I pictured him but I think that's just because of the angle and his crest does seem a little big but apart from that I'd say it is an absolute masterpiece!

You really did the scene justice here and thanks for the commission. You've done an awesome job.

Well, what a breathtaking painting! I just interrupted proofreading my newest chapter when I saw this I just had to comment!

As always, the backbround and the general mood is simply working very well with this painting. You really feel there's a vicious storm ongoing ;)

As you know Ducky is my favourite character. I think you've drawn her perfectly! The shading is breathtakingly accurate and her expression is simply SPOT ON  :lol She's like... in a mixture of confusion and joy while being too surprised to show that actually

Trough looks a bit different than I imagined him but then again he's not my OC :p I think his crest might be a bit thick but otherwise you've also done an excellent job drawing him! :yes

You just keep stunning me again and again, you have talent, keep drawing and who knows. One day you may be proffesional enough to be a living with art? I would pay for art of that quality  :exactly

Glad you like it! I really enjoyed the challenge of painting a storm, though the ocean was quite tricky!

It was difficult to figure out Ducky's expression with that beak, but I'm glad it worked out! She's a lot of fun to draw.

Trough was probably the hardest to get right... and as I said earlier, looking back I definitely might have overdone it on the crest a little :slap

Yup, I think I can go as far as say that this is right up there with your best works, if not THE best in terms of background, shading and mood visualization. The kiss looks a bit... uhm... awkward, but I guess that is somewhat intentional, isn't it? :D
If it is, then it fits perfectly. The designs of Ducky and Trough, though I do not know his exact details, seem 100% spot on, and the detail is incredible.

As I said already:

Praise the gods you gave him two fingers and proper, pointed claws! :D
Jokes aside, this is another scene I remember perfectly, just another intense one. Chomper's immense loyalty to his leaf-eater friends could've turned this scene into quite the fatal outcome, had he not recognized Ruby via her unique way of speaking even in the carnivore language, if I remember that detail correctly.
Now, this turned out really, really good once again! I especially must stress how awesome the night sky looks, but how you are torn between focusing on that and Chomper's murderous gleam in his eyes. Not to mention Ruby's expression.
Literally, the only detail I would've liked to see added were the dewclaws on Chomper's feet, though I understand that LBT isn't really consistent when it comes to anatomical correctness. :D
_________

Looking forward to whatever comes next! :)

And the whole scene is SO intense...

How much time do you spend to draw such great works?

Title: DarkWolf's Fanart Thread
Post by: rhombus on June 28, 2016, 05:17:54 PM
Absolutely amazing!  :wow  The emotion on Ruby's face is captured perfectly.  You can see her confusion... her fear of what she has become... and her fear of her friend.  She has the look of a being who has been placed into a body that is not her own, which is exactly what has happened.  Chomper, meanwhile, is completely in predator mode.  Gone in this moment is the 'freindly sharptooth' and in its place is a predator who is prepared to avenge his friend.  The red gleam from his nicitating membranes clearly indicate what he has in mind for the 'intruder'.  The anatomy of both dinosaurs is captured perfectly, with the slight inaccuracies in Chomper's appearance (no dew claws) being well-justified due to this being a Land Before Time drawing.  The excellent background and the expert use of shadows complete this astonishing drawing.

Thank you very much for the commission.  :)  There are so many other scenes that I would love to see you capture in visual form.  If there are any on this list ( http://z7.invisionfree.com/thegangoffive/i...showtopic=13831 (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=13473) ) that look particularly interesting to you, then please let me know.  Otherwise, I would certainly be interested in commissioning another work in the coming week.

A scene that is reminiscent of the first movie and an awesome confrontation between friends. Both backgrounds are eye grabbing and the expressions of the characters are perfect if not unforgettable.

Quote

I responded on DA already, but again, thank you both! In depth comments like this are both helpful and motivating :smile

Oh my...
This glare could visit anyone in nightmare.
And the whole scene is SO intense...

How much time do you spend to draw such great works?

Thank you!
Actually, I'm not sure! I usually get 3-4 hours at night to work on stuff, but I don't keep track of how many nights it takes me. I will have to keep track of time on the next one, as it seems to be something that a lot of people are interested in :yes

These recent pictures are bloody magnificent! :)littlefoot
A scene that is reminiscent of the first movie and an awesome confrontation between friends. Both backgrounds are eye grabbing and the expressions of the characters are perfect if not unforgettable. Chomper in particular looks pretty vicious with those red eyes, talk about a character seeing red :lol
Great, great work mate, I hope you have the best of luck in your future commissions   :yes

Thank you! I've been on a roll lately :lol
I'm glad the backgrounds turned out well! I've been trying to improve in that area. And Chomper's red eye effect was definitely fun to do :)

Wow! That picture you made is fantastic! I love the expressions on their faces! You can see Ruby is scared in fear of what has happened to Chomper, his friend. As for Chomper, wow. Those red eyes make him look like he's turned to a real sharptooth. Or like he's joining the Dark Side! (Sorry, couldn't resist)

Your drawings are always awesome! You really do have talent! Can't wait for your next picture!

If I see your shadow, I can see your soul, and can tell everything about you...

Nice trio!

This time, due to simple "painting-like" background, dinosaurs on foreground are looking... kind of unnaturally. Like plush toys. Don't know how to explain...
But only if you see the whole picture. Characters are great!

Amazing work once again.  :)

The inclusion of the shadows is truly a great idea, as it hints to the fact that the essence of our beloved characters still remain the same deep down even though they have changed remarkably on the outside, and I think that you captured that quite well.  Putting diverging herbivorous shadows beside carnivorous bodies must have been a difficult thing to get right; especially considering the perspective used and the need to not take the focus away from the three characters.  The fact that you were able to successfully navigate these competing concerns is a testament of your artistic skill.

Though I agree with Snik that the perspective (from the top) may not be the best perspective for a strictly realistic look for dinosaurs, I think that it works very well for a mature version of LBT-style art.  This unique amalgamation of maturity, darkness, and the Land Before Time in this art matches the Eighth Hunter continuity very well.  I absolutely love how it turned out here.  :)

PS: Just out of curiosity, how long did the shadows take you to get right?  I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to get the proportions right.

I think I see what you mean. The line-art is always the most difficult part for me, and the style I chose might not match up perfectly with the background. Thanks for the comment :smile

Thank you! Julian had a very vivid idea for the scene, and I hope I managed to do it justice :) It was very difficult to find an angle that kept all of the necessary elements intact without obscuring the shapes of the shadows or the characters' emotions too much.

Again, thanks! I like how it turned out, too :) I tried a few new techniques, and I feel like I was at least somewhat successful :lol

As for the shadows, well! It took me a couple of hours of rough sketching spread out over a few weeks. I had to do some research and try several approaches, also there was a lot of measuring involved :D

You already know what I think of this for the most part, but let me give you some more insight publicly:
So, obviously I absolutely love the overall look! You managed to convey the idea I had, and you managed to do it perfectly! The shadows don't look out of place, and are instead in harmony with the lighting and characters. I'd say you mastered this challenge indeed, and you've gotten noticeably better yet again in terms of shading, details and the usual stuff of great art!

Now personally, there is only one single thing I've noticed which I look at with mixed emotions. "Mixed" meaning neither negative nor positive, just something I wanted to point out which I like on the one hand, but dislike a bit on the other. It's obvious that you were in the process of finding your own style, and in doing so you went from "realistic cartoon style with an LBT flair" to "LBT cartoon style with a realistic flair". For example, you didn't do the dewclaws here (though they would've been very difficult to add, I admit), and the way you draw some claws now, in contrary to a few months ago, is very "friendly" (them being a bit round and less sharp). As I said, this is nothing I would criticize, however, I can't help but point this out as I tend to like realism more than accurate representation of fandom looks, if that makes sense.

In any event, again, I can only say that this is just another one of your best pieces, and I look forward to working together with you once more. :)

I just want to reiterate what I said in my PM to you, and that is that this perfectly captures Taunt's personality.  :yes One can almost see Cera off panel rolling her eyes at the insufferable fastbiter as he provokes her in the way that only Taunt can. You did an excellent job as always.  :)

Thank you once more for creating this wonderful work.  I must say that you have certainly risen to the challenge and the final product is a gift to behold.  As for my comments on the merits of the work, I will repeat what I said in my PM:

This is absolutely beautiful. :)  Thank you very much for creating this commission. I think you have captured both of these beloved characters were well. Cera's annoyance shines through as does Taunt's usual brand of humorous taunting. The background completes the overalll mood of the image, though she and Taunt are separated by some space one also sees no grass between them, indicating that the barriers between them are minimal. I don't know if that was intentional, but it adds a whole other level of meaning to the piece.

Mo is another one of my favorites, as one of the few bilingual characters appearing in LBT. I always loved LBT IX, and I think they handled the theme of cultural misunderstanding pretty well... a lot better than they did with the yellowbellies, anyway :lol

The overall layout is quite simple (perhaps there could have been another cliff in the distance or something) but that is made up with such a nice coloring and a beautiful scene. Mo isn't quite my favorite character but scenes like these go a long way in trying to make me change my opinion. Nice job, once again, with this one!

Very nicely done.  :) This depiction of him (in particular the eyes and face) really brings out the playful innocence I think, while the blue hues of the water and the emptiness on one side of the drawing imply an unseen, amorphous melancholy, which could serve as a hint of the cultural misunderstanding between him and his land-dwelling friends, or as a reminder of the vast openness of the sea.

This is a very excellent drawing. I like the way you captured Mo in his rare sweet and tender moments as he looks at the starfish. He’s still so recognizably Mo while in another drawing style. I like how the light shines through the surface and onto Mo. The starfish and the glimpse of ground are also great. I’m glad I saw this today.

(Aside: I find it interesting that two of your faves are Shorty, Littlefoot’s adopted brother and Mo, Littlefoot’s mud brother. It brought to mind the…awkwardness that might ensue if they meet. There might be some tension from Shorty and he might be a bit territorial over Littlefoot. Though Mo might head off any conflict by throwing mud on Shorty and declaring him a mud brother as well. I’m unsure of how Shorty might respond but I’m picturing him being both bemused and pleased.)

And true- despite its wonders, the sea is a vast and dangerous place. Perhaps this is why the waterkin have to keep such a playful outlook on things :lol It was very weird to draw Mo alone here, as they seem like an inherently social group.

I wasn't expecting Mo of all characters, you definitely surprised me there and, as always, your work shines ^^spike

It's kept rather simple but that is not an issue at all. As far as I'm concerned, I think the bg works. I mean... it's a very realistic approach to paint an underwater scene... and many areas down there are just... rather empty :p

You gotta wonder what was happening during the development of the film. Here they are just reusing or recoloring a bunch of longnecks and one artist was like "I'm gonna make a spotted one!" :lol

I love the picture and I look to your art for possible ways to improve myself. Like the shading and lightening around the thigh to give it the bulging appearance (I take it you're supposed to learn that in an introduction with drawing fruit or something but since I'm jumping right into things, this is the closest example that comes to mind). I'm also taking a good look at the grass and how it's colored, with the wave like nature of light and dark shades to give it the "blowing in the wind" feel, coupled with the random dark individual blades accented in (is that what you would call it? or accentuate maybe?) to show that it is indeed grass.

Great job!

Very nice picture! As usual, the drawing is spot-on and I really like the longneck's expression! I'm not a fan of his design due to the very unlikely coloring but that's just the film.  ;) He seems much younger in the picture which is a good thing imo but in any case, great job with the drawing as always!  :yes

Nice painterly piece of fanart. From what I gleam from this forum's glossary and the LBT wiki, he is a Saltasaurus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saltasaurus). I believe we also see his kind in movie 14 with Bron's integrated herd. The longneck is younger/chibier than the screenshot of that character you use as a example, but I don't mind and he's a very faithful depiction of how his species is designed/colored species in the movie. The shading and lighting is also great, and I like the blades of grass we can see. I like his expression, he seems to be cutely sad about something. I hope he gets to cheer up. Great job.

I know, right? He really stands out :smile

Thanks! Good shading is definitely one of the more challenging parts of drawing. There's no real right way to learn how to do it, but looking at pictures and observing objects definitely helps to figure out how light works :yes

But most of the time... I just kind of eyeball it :lol

Thanks very much! I kind of ran out of room so I changed his proportions a bit... should have just made the drawing area larger :lol
Yeah, it was a little weird that there only seemed to be one of his kind at the crater. Maybe his species are mostly from too far away for convenient travel to the dream location... or maybe there were actually a few of them and they all just look exactly the same :smile

Actually, I checked later in movie 10 when those sharpteeth came and two Saltasauruses could be seen standing at the crater ridge with Grandma Longneck as someone warns her not to go down there. There could be others in the background or on the ridge during the eclipse climax, but I don't feel like trawling through the movie at the moment to note number and kinds of background species. :p

Phew, OK, instead of go through and try to fix all of the broken links in this thread right now, I might just re-post my more recent artworks in batches of 2 or three as an image "anthology" of sorts. While it kind of leaves the rest of the thread out of context, it should at least buy me some time to go back through the thread and slowly fix things at my leisure :smile

If anybody is super opposed to this, let me know!

:wow That's some really amazing work! The feathers look absolutely awesome and natural here, in fact better than in any of your drawings before! The shadowing is another thing I have to point out as they emphasize the nice feeling of the picture. Also, Seeker's eyes look awesome as they have some really sweet details which do justice to the character's thoughtfulness and cold cunning. The one thing I think is off here, however, is the head's size. It seems too big in this drawing. But despite that small detail, it's great to see another great piece of art from you! Great job! :yes

I just wanted to reiterate what I said in the personal message in that I think this is one of your strongest drawings to date.  :) I think that you accomplished the task of getting the proportions correct in a rather difficult pose quite nicely.  It is very easy, when the subject of a drawing is facing one direction but is closer to the perspective of the viewer, to get the dimensions off.  I am left with the impression when viewing this drawing that Seeker is looking at something in the distance that only he can see.  That he could be seeking a physical path to a new location, or a mental path to accomplish a goal, but all the while he is trying to do so in a way where he can stare at his reflection the next day and still sing his pack song with pride.  This is complimented by his still brown eyes in the drawing, hinting that the character of Littlefoot still exists in his new form, creating a dichotomy that is both beautiful and haunting. Excellent job!  :)

This is excellent!  :wow  The shading really highlights her focus on the task in front of her as she carefully picks out the proper plants for her next procedure.  I think the simple background, coupled with the focus on the tree, the fern, the vine above, and the plant being collected, helps to focus the reader on the relevant details of the drawing itself, which was a nice touch. The forested background further highlights the need for a discriminating eye in determining the proper plants among the multitudes in the jungle.  Her eyes, on the other hand, hint at an innate intelligence and budding confidence that has been nurtured since her ascent into adulthood.  You have truly outdid yourself with this one!  :DD  Thank you again!

Title: DarkWolf's Fanart Thread
Post by: Sovereign on April 24, 2018, 05:17:09 PM
While I, too, imagined Mender to look slightly different, the picture itself is really great as always! Her expression suits the character nicely as she looks highly thoughtful and calculative about what kind of herbs she's gathering. However, perhaps even more than Mender herself, I think the background is one of your best ones yet. The shady forest is always a great choice and the silhouettes of trees and overall dark atmosphere creates an excellent feeling to this drawing. :DD Even then, I get the feeling that the outlines on Mender in particular aren't quite as sharp as, say, in the Taunt drawing which looks rather weird. However, it may be partly due to the impression of shade so it isn't too distracting. Awesome job again. :yes
Title: DarkWolf's Fanart Thread
Post by: DarkWolf91 on April 24, 2018, 09:42:17 PM
Thanks, guys! Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to read Mender's Tale, so this interpretation is based on a loose description. It's possible my way of drawing her might change a bit when I get the chance to read it :smile

Thanks for the input on the lines, Sovereign! I have trouble doing consistent lines in Photoshop, and I think I may have been using this brush at too low of a resolution. While the lines look fine on their own, they are very graphic in style and don't really fit with the painted background. I went ahead and re-lined it real quick tonight. Ah, the wonders of technology  :p

I'm going to leave the one above up for comparison. (Rhombus, I'll e-mail you this version too :D )

Turns out I haven't commented on the last 3 that you've done  :oops

They're all great of course but the softer edges for both the shadows and brighter scales really help with the look of Mender compared to the more flat lines of your previous Taunt drawing!
I didn't mind the thicker lines but I felt like it did kinda clash with the plants she was holding as they had no lines. The finer lines look a lot better in this regard.

Awesome job! :DD

It's quite a simple but still very nice drawing! :) I quite like the more relaxed feeling in this one and the characters' expressions, especially Spike's, create a great atmosphere here. The background isn't too detailed but it isn't too bothering. This is a nice look on the Gang's less hectic moments and it really fits the prompt nicely. Great job!  :yes

This is a wonderful drawing.  :) Both the bright coloration of the scene and the expressions of the characters sets the tone for this drawing.  From Spike's satisfied restiveness, Ducky's interest at something above, and Littlefoot and Cera's glazed expressions of comfort in the warm sun, it all gives the impression of the gang enjoying one another's company after a lazy spring day.  Nicely done!

Ah very nice! Their expressions are all great and Spike, Littlefoot, and Cera look suitably relaxed. Ducky looks like she's spotted a Sky Puffy shape. Petrie just seems generally excited, maybe he's getting ready to do some flying?

The clouds are also looking good! Clouds have been something I've avoided so far as I have no idea how I would get them to look good with coloured pencils. :p

Great job!  :)littlefoot

Thanks so much, guys! I really enjoyed drawing the gang again, it's been too long!
And Flathead, I know what you mean- clouds are reeeally tricky with colored pencils. I have an easier time with them when using watercolors and other paints, as well as markers (though markers are tricky for other reasons).

Next up is another commission for Rhombus, a hypothetical Mender with feathers! Nightmare or alternate universe? No one knows :p

Aaaaand here's my fanart prompt entry! All of the characters in the LBT RP so far! The ones who haven't technically made their entrances yet I drew small... but mostly because I ran out of room :p

This was done in a huge rush, so some characters definitely look worse than others... especially Slash, sorry about him :lol

Also, no one really mentioned eye color in their descriptions so I just used whatever colors looked good. If anybody wants me to use different eye colors in the future, just let me know :smile

Holy treestars, it looks osom!!!

heh, is that my black lost-somewhere-in-the-land-before-time sharpbeek, flying above Slash? :D His blue-light-grey lines on wings and neck makes him too bright, as I think, but I like his small appearance, thank you!

poor blue ovi, he's so... colourful. XD

did you rush because of some fanart prompt or something? ;) Well, it didn't hurt final picture, as I see, it is still awesome!

Well, that certainly is a happy lot! As always, the atmosphere is extremely nice in this picture and I mostly approve about how you portrayed the characters! Rinen looks pretty much as intended and his distrust of the others certainly shows in this picture. The way he looks is quite consistent with my descriptions even if it was still a surprise (due to my own vision) to see how you see the threehorn. In any case, your version is a very decent one! :) As for the others, I really like Slash's imposing (if familiar :p) pose as well as Buko and Lizzie's expressions which look very sincere. The scene itself is quite generic but that is understandable as these characters haven't ever appeared together just yet. In any case, it's good great to take a visual look at this group for the very first time! Great job as always! :)littlefoot

This artwork is absolutely amazing!  :wow I think you have captured everyone quite well, from Rinen's distrust, Wyoh's sincerity, and Buko's... purple-ness I think that you have captured everyone quite well from what we know in the RP.  Also, considering he's my character, I love how utterly out of place Buko looks. :stuck_out_tongue: I can only imagine our threehorn friend is not pleased to having the equivalent of a giant bright neon sign saying "Eat Me" walking with the gang.  With the style and placement of the characters being reminiscent of the posters for the first film, I can only hope that our future entries to the RP will do the concept justice. I quite like where the RP has gone thus far.  :)littlefoot

Wow, I knew you were going to do a height chart but I didn't expect something like this. This is amazing mate! :exactly I must say that it is very well done considering the time restraint and speed you had to move at to get this done but it is doesn't distract. The background like seems to be the perfect picture. Rather much like the original cover of the land before time just with different characters and speaking of characters I must say they are all very impressive with a few differences here and there and in some cases different to how I envisioned them but I still think it is good the way it is. The atmosphere I must say is just right with everyone seeming like they have some burden on there shoulders as they journey together.

I am also very impressed with what you've done with Aquarius he is almost exactly like I imagined him and his expression is perfect considering what he has done through. I wish to have seen a bit more detail in his eyes but that is minor. I think you have captured Aquarius image almost perfectly :Mo. I also like how you included Orsur in the background (or at least I think it's him) and Slash looks pretty fierce which seems rather fitting.

Overall this piece was simply brilliant! :)littlefoot

I'm glad you like Aquarius! Unfortunately it was hard to get the detail in with the small scale, but hopefully I'll end up drawing a bigger picture of him in the future :smile And yep, that's Orsur! I also added Leafie, though the person who made that character seems to have disappeared.

A great drawing as always and it's cool to see Breeze drawn for the first time. :)littlefoot The perspective is a nice one and I like her expression quite a bit. The colors in her eyes look especially well done. However, I get the feeling that her neck is a bit too thick (or her head too small?) and the background isn't as detailed as in some others of your drawings but those issues aren't that serious. All in all, awesome work as usual. :^^spike

I'd say this goes along quite nicely with your Seeker drawing you did earlier as they both seem to fit their names quite well, in my opinion. In this case it's the grass blowing in the wind. I agree with Sovereign as well that her neck seems a little thick?

Great job though! :DD
Title: Re: DarkWolf's Fanart Thread
Post by: rhombus on August 28, 2018, 03:07:35 AM
Thank you again, DarkWolf, for the wonderful drawing!  :wow The others are commenting on her neck perhaps being a bit thick, but I look at it this way: she is mated to Spike in my story, so perhaps she has taken to eating Spike-sized portions of food?  :^^spike Joke aside, I love how you have incorporated motifs into many of these drawings hinting at the personalities or struggles of these characters, from Seeker seeking his meaning in a world forever changed, to Breeze running as fast as the breeze as indicated by the waving grass, to Taunt appearing to visibly Taunt the viewer in his picture.  Little details like that add so much to the final result.

Thanks again, and I look forward to your future offerings.  :)

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Looking at it now I agree that the neck is a bit thick- I think I messed up the foreshortening as the angle is supposed to be from slightly above at 3/4s and I mistakenly made it uniform thickness :oops
But then maybe she has been taking a few eating tips from Spike, as Rhombus said :lol

Animating is a toughie, and it looks pretty smooth to me. Even with a janky framerate (debatable), the flexibility of the moving characters make it seem seamless. It's really nice and the models aren't skewed, so great job!

About Breeze, it's a simple drawing by your standards but aside from the neck issue everybody has pointed out it's absolutely great :smile The grass is painted with little detail here but I like how it turns out. It'd be too much for me at my current skill level even getting near that :angel

I don't think I need to say anything about the animation. Just brilliant :DD

As for the picture itself, Sol and Zaura's relationship can clearly be seen here and their expressions are spot on. I wanted to do something that suggests just a fun little mishap-journey with Petrie, Pterano, and Etta. I just think it might be fun to have these three interact, and get into some high-flying adventures without any land-walkers to hold them back :p

This picture has a really great idea and it's nice to have these three together. The background colors absolutely amazing and Pterano's proud expression as well as Etta's look are really great but Petrie, sadly, isn't drawn as well this time. First, there are many cases in his face where the lines stretch look smeary and the way his lower body looks is really weird. Maybe it's because of the perspective but it still doesn't look right. But even then, the picture as a whole looks great but I thought I'd point out those issues. :)

It's amazing what you got done it the short time available! Even with some of the more evident points that Sovereign has mentioned it still looks great! While Etta's expression looks good, both Pterano and Petrie's are spot on!

Thank you very much for the art, Darkwolf!  :chompysmile I do like the expressions on their faces in this shot. It almost looks like they are watching something down below and Soar is giving Spotter a sardonic look at the proceedings below.

Quote
**Taunt does something stupid**  :bestsharptooth

**Spotter watches with amusement**

(Soar looks over) "Is he always like this?"

I also like how the focus of the background is clearly on the sky, with other details being muted, which clearly indicates Spotter and Soar's nature as flyers.  The result between the colorful background and muted palette of the flyers is a tranquil scene showcasing these two sharptooth flyers.

Thanks again for doing this! I look forward to what you come up with next.  :)littlefoot

You may be one of the few in the forum who I can always count on to make top notch drawings. I've always had a certain amount of trouble trying to envision the two in my mind, and to my disappointment my evaluation failed me. I do notice a tiny fraction of similarities with Petrie, Soar and Sierra. The only noticeable difference between them is that the duo possess a nape, whereas Sierra does not. I really like the detail in that. :)

Another well done picture! ^^

Maybe just their wings look in strange perspective, even if they're rosen up by wind.

I think that's meant to be the work of the wind. You can clearly see they are seated on a branch, which fits them perfectly as they are flyers. But yeah, the posture does seem a bit misleading at first glance.

It really is nice to see another picture from you. While the picture looks great as a whole, I do agree with rhombus that the expressions are simply amazing. Petrie's faraway but kind look fits him very well and I quite love the amused and deeply appreciating look within Soar's eyes. Their faces really sell the picture and the background is rather sweet as well. Phenomenal work, DW! :)littlefoot

Ah, what a lovely piece! The gloamish/dawnish red background provides and intresting juxtaposition to the muted browns of the flyer mates and really gives the whole thing a majestic view. Like Anagnos, I do see the similarities with the Rinkus & Sierra crew (deliberate, perhaps?), but their softer expressions and unfurled wings highlight their nature as flyers. And yes, the exasperated look and slight eyeballing Soar gives Spotter sells the whole situation without words. :Mo

Another amazing drawing once again! Other people here have expressed their praise over the background, their expressions, but for me particularly I'm entranced by the fine, intricate detail you put on that tree branch. Good job blending it in with the sunset background. But overall, I'm in love with this picture of Spotter & Soar. :)

Ah that looks wonderful! I really like the sunset colours with the clouds! Can't say too much about the characters as I haven't read the story but they both look good! I understand that school has kept you busy, but if you could contribute more that would be awesome! (maybe with the prompts by any chance?  ;)Cera )

Thanks so much everyone!!! I ended up disappearing from here far longer than I meant to due to some life issues, but I'm happy to see that the forum is still active! Will try to drop by more often! For now, I have a few things to share, including five more finished commission pieces for Rhombus (Finder, Ponder, Path, Leap, and Sternclaw!) and a completely finished version of the ducky / petrie animation! (I'll post the animation in a second comment below this one due to file size restrictions)
I'm going to keep up with messages from now on, so if anyone still needs something from me feel free to send a new message about it!

It’s great to see some new stuff from you DW!!  :DD I really like the shading and lighting in all of these pierces, and the backgrounds are very well done. Also the Petrie and Ducky animation is cute, and it’s so awesome to see it finished!  :Mo

I use Clip Studio Paint for just about everything now! It's a really powerful program, and the EX version has a lot of great animation tools.

Nice! I'll have to look into that. As Firealpaca doesn't do me too well. I can't animate to music on there, which stinks.

I just have to say, browsing through the fanart section your thread helped to inspire me to try drawing dinos again, so thank you! These are all absolutely stunning! I love the backgrounds especially. The animation is amazing, too! Can't wait to see more from you!

Oh hey DarkWolf good to see you back! I've missed seeing your amazing work around here, but I suppose the benefit is that you're able to dump all of this on us at once! :PLoofah

I'm pretty sure I mentioned it on DA but the finished animation looks great!  :chompysmile

The animation! Finally! :lol

Gosh, it looks so great like... really close to movie quality if I dare say so. Thank you so so much for seeing this random project through to the very end!  :spikeblush

I've gotta say that each time you post pictures I feel like the style is slightly different but nonetheless consistently amazing. I love this type of painting style that doesn't even try to be realistic yet somehow ends up looking really realistic. Instead of trying to do smooth transitions, you just use a few different shades of the same colour to take into account the play of light and shadow. Really wonderful art, wish I could draw like you!  :duckyOK

You know, I don't really do art anymore but every once in a while I still feel like trying something (like for a prompt challenge  :^^spike). Doing things digitally is kinda easier than the traditional way and I've been looking for a reliable digital software for ages. Could you recommend Clip Studio Paint for a beginner like me? I think I once grabbed a demo version of it but ended up getting lost because I didn't really understand how most of its functions work. Might need a tutorial of sorts lol.  :sducky

My current tool of the trade is ArtRage which emulates the feeling of drawing traditionally quite well, however it's very limited in terms of functionality.

Thank you! It was good to finally finish the animation, it did take some time hahaha. I’ve been trying out different background styles as well, and I’m glad the painting looks good  :smile

As far as the program goes, I highly recommend Clip Studio! I couldn’t recommend it more, it’s extremely versatile for the price. It’s actually on sale right now, and the Pro version is just $25. (EX is more expensive - $110, but the main difference between the two is animation features. If you don’t do animation, you don’t really need EX.) They do these 50% sales pretty regularly, too, so this won’t be the last opportunity to get it cheap. I actually used to use art rage as well, and the brushes are nice but it’s pretty limited and the layers work kind of weird. I basically live in Clip Studio now haha

Awesome interpretation of Rhombus' transformed characters!  From lightning to anatomy, you did a great job!  Good background variation, too!  Funny how the gang became more anatomically correct raptors than the actual raptors we're familiar with :petrieLOL.
