Title: Scuba Diving
Post by: The Lone Dragon on October 29, 2015, 06:09:34 AM
I wonder if anyone else here is also a fellow Diver like myself. I personally have been diving recreationally since I was 15 and I totally love it. The waters around the coast of Victoria, Australia are a wonderful diving place, though I would love to dive at South West Rock in NSW which holds the largest Grey Nurse Shark colony in the world and yes I have dived with Grey Nurse before and would love to again.

Some of my experiences include seeing a whole school of Barracuda, stumbling upon a large Octopus, being completely swamped by Banjo Sharks/Fiddler Rays and much more however I have certainly had tough experiences like sea sickness when stuck out in The Bass Strait, feeling the fierce pull of the ocean currents and surviving five cases of severe hypothermia.

Does anyone else here dive? What type of underwater experiences have you had?

Quite a few experiences, even though I don't use equipment for diving except a diving mask and my ability to hold my breath. I don't do it regularly, but each time I went to places where I did I earned some experience bit by bit, how to deal with holding your breath, being able to hold it for a longer time (if I just go one meter below the surface and use very small movements to stay there, I can do that for quite a while before I need air again). My personal record without any movement at all, just putting the head underwater, was almost two minutes. But the last few moments, oh boy.
The maximum depth I ever reached so far is about 7 meters, but I'm just guessing that out of different factors.

I was quite a few times at the red sea already, seeing the reefs there. I also have an underwater cam and got some nice shots there as well.

And then there was also this. :D

The only staged photo I ever made underwater. That fish checking out the figure was a pure coincidence.

Some videos also exist.

a LOT of fish (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PH4puHocHM)

more fish, dunno the english name, but these two weren't afraid at all. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0Euf4Hd9RU)

Spinner Dolphins (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EVTPsQdyug)
That were the best shots I could get. Going after dolphins is tough. Even though they barely move, you have to give your best to keep behind them. :D

I would like to dive, and I took a freediving course last summer. I learned, how to dive 8 meters deep during one afternoon, and I will certainly try it again, but I do not think, that even if I would do it regularly, I would dive very deep, swimming few meters under water sounds much better to me, than just diving as deep as possible.
