Title: Ducky vs. Flathead
Post by: Ducky123 on August 05, 2018, 01:22:23 PM
Hey guys and welcome to a new artsy project between Flathead and me. Recently we both helped each other a lot in our creative processes such as the fanart prompt challenge and we also found that there are some shows besides LBT that we both enjoy so now we regularly challenge each other with prompts and screenshot redraws for practice and for the laughs of course.

Since some will be LBT and some will not, we decided to place it here. You probably won't see any coloured art here since we usually just do the lineart (for now).

Feel free to decide on a winner too if you like xD

Anyway, here's mine.

(holy shit I forgot the forum doesn't resize stuff anymore) EDIT fixed  :^^spike

We were both struggling with our entries for the fanart challenge (particular me with my longneck drawing) so we decided to draw Littlefoot. Turned out to be a good practise   :^^spike :^^spike

I'm sure Flathead is going to share his entry soon as well  :lol

And sure enough I have arrived with my submission :p

Yeah we were looking to find decent longneck references that could possibly be used such as different angles that could be interesting. I found this one in LBT 2 when Littlefoot is being backed into the corner by Ozzy and trips. This one was fun to draw as the leg positions and angles were something I wasn't used to.

By the way, most of these drawings will be at least a little rough as we try to finish them in a decent amount of time so don't be shy to laugh at something that's off (like my seemingly fat bellied Littlefoot) :lol After all, this is more about screwing around then an actual competition.

This is a pretty neat idea! :yes This kind of light-hearted competition is a good way to motivate oneself to draw and to try to perhaps do better than if you were only drawing for yourself. This first pose was a nice one as the point of view is far from a normal one. Both of you did a great job here but this time I have to say that Ducky's drawing is a bit stronger. I like Flathead's perspective more (and the fact that we see all of of the longneck in it) but his Littlefoot sure seems quite tubby and his tail is also quite small. In any case, it'll be intriguing to see what other LBT drawings you'll do and what are the other series you'll draw later on. How often should we expect a pair of drawings such as these ones? :)

interesting "competition" here! :D

Like both drawings! But honestly, Flathead's looked more better from the very first second.
(Plus, his flathead's head is the whole. XD and feet are made much better.)

Would like to see more of such pictures! ^^

Thanks you guys. It really is a neat idea and all credit goes to Ducky for that. He came up with both the idea of doing these drawings as well as posting them like this.

Haha yeah, though I think he looks a lot fatter then he actually is because of the fact his legs and tail are smaller then they should be. Overall I liked both of our attempts as both look good but end up having issues in different areas.

So far we try and have these sorts of drawing sessions every week or two. This one actually dates back to the end of June, slightly before the last fanart deadline. We've done a few more since then with varying success so we'll probably get around to posting them in the near future. So far this is the only LBT one we've done as we mostly have the fanart prompts to fill that role and this is a good way for me to try and draw other, non-LBT drawings. With the release of this one though I'm kind of wanting to do another LBT one so look forward to that. :smile

Thanks Sneak! What can I say, I'm flat out ahead of the game when it comes to drawing flatheads' flat heads :lol

Don't worry, they'll come. We wouldn't make a new topic for this just to post one picture :DD

Since the next 4 challenges were all related to an anime we both love (yes, we just love it, #season2hype), we decided to dump them all out at once today. I'll provide short explanations and I'm sure Flathead won't take long to add his drawings :yes

1.

This is a (rather sketchy and kinda failed) drawing of Nanachi from the anime Made in Abyss --> psst, it's great, watch it ;). We were drawing a scene of her crying over the loss of her dearest friend after some really dark stuff happened to them. Anyway, if I remember correctly, Flathead's version was far better :P Drawing Nanachi was a first for me.

2.

Here, we were trying to recreate a movie poster that's been coming along the announcement of two recap movies of the first season which had us really hyped (until we realized those were recap movies, oh well :P). However, we soon realized it was a hell of a task and quit prematurely (I didn't even finish Riko, the main character. Flathead has drawn Reg, a mysterious robot boy who lost his memory and who Riko befriends with, I believe)

well... I think I'll leave explaining this scene to Flathead since he drew the whole picture. I kinda failed  :^^spike

4.

ahh, the only one I'm okay with  :smile Riko is reading an unknown paper. Judging by her reaction, it was probably something unpleasant... like the leader of her orphanage going after her in the morning after she sneaks off into the abyss :^^spike

Expect more of these because as I said we both love that anime  :wub

Ducky out...  :bolt

Yep I have to thank Ducky for getting me into Made in Abyss. It is indeed pretty good haha. Anyways, let's get right into it.

1.

I wouldn't go so far as to say mine is definitively better, but I think mine is cleaner overall.

2.
I've nicknamed this one "Riko on Chemo" since I stopped halfway through drawing Riko's face when Ducky stopped and it looks like she has cancer :p I have a bit of Reg drawn there, the robot Ducky was talking about (his arms can shoot out sorta like grapple hooks). This one was fairly tough I must admit, though I do intend to finish it at some point.

3.
Ok so this one is Riko shaking her Star Compass (which points in the direction of the center of the abyss or something) in excitement. It seems like it will play a pivotal role in the show until she immediately loses grip and flings it into a river :lol Maybe it will show up season 2 though?

4.

I felt we both did a good job on this one, though I remembered to include the sweat dripping down Riko's face. :p

Whew, that was a lot. Let us know what you guys think! (and also be sure to check out here (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=704.new#new) for something funny :lol )

For me, this time, Ducky is winner!

Wow, you're both great at sketching!

I feel that both of you did better at different sketches (for instance, I prefer Ducky's #4 and Flathead's #3), but I'm not an artist so I can't comment on cleanness and whatever elaborate artist terms y'all use.
Keep it you, ya' both! :^^spike

This time I'll have to go with Flathead as I find his drawings cleaner and having better expressions this time, especially on the last two ones. However, I must admit that this style doesn't appeal to me at all. :sducky

@Sovereign Well, you mean the anime's style or this pencil sketch style in general? Truth be told, this is the best way to practise lineart if you don't have a lot of time to go all out on fully coloured drawings :^^spike

Thanks you guys!

I do admit that I much prefer drawing LBT, mostly because I'm not the biggest fan of drawing humans in general (plus dealing with clothes :p ). But it does serve as good practice to draw something different and new (especially when I'm staring at my same prompt for 2 months haha) and in general is a good way to improve as an artist. Don't worry, we have some LBT ones to share next time :DD

Yeah, I meant the anime's style. There is nothing wrong with the sketches themselves. :p

ah ok. Yes Made in Abyss has a very unique animation style. Personally, I like it. It's not like 95% of the mainstream animes which is a welcome change.
