I start out with the outline of the eye. The eye helps me figure out where the character is going to be facing, and what mood they are going to be in. Starting out with the eye also helps me figure out where everything else about the head will fall into place. I don't always start out with the eyes, but almost always I do.
2. I draw the brow above the eyes as well as the outline(s) of the lower eyelid. Pupils are added.
3. I draw the top of the head and snout. This helps me to figure out how long the jaw is going to be and how broad or narrow it will end up.
4. I complete the lower jaw. This helps me further determine the mood of the character.
5. I finish up the top part of the head, adding in the nose, finishing the lips of the jaws, and outlining a bony structure in the upper jaw.
6. I draw the top part of the lower jaw if I want the jaws to be open, and the angle determines how wide the gap is. If the jaws are closed, however, I just draw the bottom part of the jaw.
7. I draw the bottom part of the jaw to complete the mouth. If the bottom jaw is too short, I'll extend it a little.
8. Next, I draw in the teeth, the bit of skin connecting the upper and lower lips, and the tongue, as well as part of the lip from the other side to give a bit of dimension.
9. I draw the top part of the neck. This helps me determine how high the head is set and how long the neck is going to be.
10. I draw the lower part of the neck, and try to keep it about the same shape as the top line.
11. To complete the neck, I outline some muscles and the vertabrate in the neck.
12. I extend the line of the top of the neck to create the back, as well as outline the vertebrate. This helps me determine how long the body is going to be, and its position. It also helps me place the arms and legs in the right place.
13. I draw out the shoulder and upperarm of the forelimb, which determines what general direction the arm is going to be in, and draw out the chest as well as outline the wishbone/collar bone.
14. I draw the second joint in the arm. It determines the general position the arm is going to be in. I also outline the muscles.
15. I draw in the claws next, before drawing the hand. Their location in relation to the arm as well as each other helps me draw in the hands correctly.
16. I finish the arm by drawing in the fingers and hand to connect the claws to the arm.
17. I draw the claws for the next arm. Only two are drawn.
18. I then draw in the fingers and hand. The third claw is only added once the fingers of the two other fingers are drawn in.
19. I draw the bottom part of the arm first.
20. Then the upperarm and top part of the second joint of the arm come in. Muscles are drawn in.
21. I draw in the thighs. Their position determines which way the leg will be facing.
22. After that, I add in the muscles, the outline of the top of the thigh, and draw the belly and underside of the character. I sometimes add in a few visible ribs as well.
23. I draw the rest of the back of the leg. Its position determines if the leg is on the ground or off the ground. I draw the bottom of the foot, and part of the top of the second joint. I add in the outline of the ankle of the character.
24. I draw in two claws and toes.
25. Next I draw in the sickle claw.
26. The top of the leg is completed, and outline of muscle is drawn as well.
27. Then I get started with the second leg by drawing the bottom of the leg first.
28. Then the thigh is added in.
29. The dew claw and sickle claw are drawn first due to the different perspective of the leg in relation to the first one.
30. The remaining two claws and toes are drawn in.
31. The top of the shin is drawn in to complete the leg. Muscle of the second joint of the leg is drawn in.
32. I start the tail by drawing the top of it. This helps me determine which direction the tail is going to go and how long it will be.
33. I complete the tail by drawing the bottom line and connecting it to the thigh. Another line is added to give the tail some perspective.
34. If I decide to, feathers are given to the character. I also draw outline of muscle in the tail.
35. I go over the sketch a bit, and add/change a few things until I'm satisfied.
36. I use a sharpie to ink the drawing, changing a few things if I deem necessary.
37. Finally I use an eraser to get rid of the pencil marks and leave only the inked drawing behind.
38. I scan the drawing in black and white and save as .bmp.
39. I open up MS Paint and edit the lineart a bit, correcting a few things, filling any spaces that may have appeared.
40. I draw in the markings. This makes it easier to color them in Photoshop CS2.
41. I open up Photoshop CS2 and color in the character.
42. Shadows are then placed on the character.
43. If I am in the mood, highlights are added.
44. Lastly, glare is added to the eyes. The drawing is resized and saved as .jpg.
