I'm going to vote for The Wasp's The Way I am. I found that the story's character study, level of writing and its fitting length were a great combination to put into this short story and those things earned it my vote.

I'm going to have to vote for "The Way I Am" as well- a really excellent character study, I enjoyed it thoroughly :)

I've finally read all entries and here's something I just have to say... I'm jealous, jealous of the great stories you all wrote there. And also a bit... stunned.

I also think it's both a good and a bad thing that rhombus and Fyn are not to be voted for. Bad, because their entries were so excellent, that I just want to vote for them... and good because I don't have to decide who to give the vote for.

I had to think about the voting quite a bit longer than I thought... in the end, I've finally made up my mind though I can't say it's a 100% decision since all entries were amazing in their own ways. My vote goes to The Wasp this month with his story "The Way I Am"

As all of the eligible voters have now cast their votes, I can announce that the winner for the January 2017 prompt challenge is The Wasp.  Congratulations!  :) You may now inform us via PM of what prompt you have in mind for the special prompt for Fyn and I, and we will try to complete our responses sometime this month.

But I would also like to thank everyone who participated last month.  I was amazed by the amount of participation, and I look forward to seeing what all of you come up with in the months to come.  :)

I, too, would like to chip in with my thanks. We weren't expecting such an impressive turnout for the first month, but the forum never ceases to amaze. There's a lot of talent here, and probably a great deal more out there, undiscovered. I honestly enjoyed my time reading all of the short stories this month, and I thank you all for your submissions! Great work!

@Fyn and Rhombus

My prompt to you gentleman, although you have already received it. I felt it necessary to make a formal announcement.

"Where does one draw the line in the sand? Often times good and bad are seen as mutually exclusive. But the gray clouds often blur those differences until one day you find yourself unable to tell whether or not you've stayed above the abyss, or already gone over it. And then you wonder if it's too late."

Happy writing, gents. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. And don't go full blown psycho Fyn!

Well, it's that time again! At the end of another prompt challenge, Rhombus and I are pleased to announce that the winner of last month's prompt challenge (by a VERY close margin) is Sovereign, with his short story "A Mutual Acceptance," which took the lead due to its completeness. While we had to choose a winner, we thought both stories were excellent, and dealt with a tricky (and admittedly somewhat poorly-worded) prompt in a professional and entertaining manner. We would like to congratulate Sovereign for a well-earned victory, and extend our thanks to both Sovereign and The Lone Dragon for participating in last month's prompt challenge Well done, both of you, and we both look forward to your future works!

Thank you very much for this honor!  :) I'm glad to see that you found my short story worthy of this, even if it was the only finished prompt. Still, I'm happy to have been able to improve since the last month and that I've managed to put your critique to use. I've also found The Lone Dragon's entry very well done and enjoyable. In any case, I'm planning on submitting my prompt during the next three or four days.  :yes

Well done to all who participated, I had a feeling that the fact that I couldn't complete this on time would factor in, this is what I get from trying to work on TST before working on the contest when there is a time limit. Anyway I'll still be submitting the rest of the story when I get the chance and thankfully in a less rushed manner then it turned out. I'll continue to write on the next prompt since I also have an idea for that, looks like I can throw the idea of only doing one story at a time out the window.

And here's my special prompt for Fyn and Rhombus.

"The endless, agonizing expanse of the deepest parts of the Mysterious Beyond hold many eerie and haunting locations. Ones that seem able to break anyone's spirit solely by their overall atmosphere or through threats that more often are imagined than real. However, there is always a fountain to wash your tears away in this land of decay and unseen grace..."

I hope you find this idea satisfactory and I'm looking forward to seeing the results! Have fun writing, both of you! :DD

Here's my special prompt for this month.

Do a story about one of the members of the Gang living their lives before the Great Earthshake. It can be a lesson, a normal day or a little adventure but the story should be from a perspective of one of the Five dealing with the challenges of the Great Migration.

I hope you'll find this prompt interesting to do and I can't wait to read whatever you choose to write. And once again, have fun!  :yes

During times of great uncertainty and inner conflict, our thoughts and actions are based on our past experiences. Most of all, the treasured, precious moments of the past will live forever and guide us through the more difficult moments of our lives and stir long-hidden and missed memories and emotions.

Have a great time working on this one, both of you!  :)

Post by: rhombus on March 16, 2018, 05:11:33 PM
Okay, everyone, another prompt is done and that means it is time for the participants to vote for their favorite entries this month.  And what a month it has been!  :)  Excluding my entry (which is not eligible for voting or winning) we have had three participating stories, all of which nicely used last month's prompt to good effect.  Though in my opinion all of them are worthy of consideration for the best entry, only one can win in the end.  :yes So with that in mind I invite all participants to vote for their favorite entries (excluding your own entry or my entry) and to give an explanation of their choice in their post.

The entries for the last prompt were:

Love is an Adventure (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=15899.0)
Author: DiddyKF1
Description: My response to the Gang of Five challenge prompt for February 2018. Ducky and Petrie find their love for each other blossoming to a whole new level, and they get ready to start a new adventure in their young lives. Set in the same continuity as "Secret Love," 12 years after the main events of the story.

Author: Rhombus
Description: My response for the February 2018 Gang of Five prompt challenge which involves making a story involving undying love. Set in the Mender's Tale continuity. When Nahoda asked his mate a question that had been on his mind for awhile, he had no idea it would set into motion events involving vines, a tree, a horribly confused flyer, and a future awkward conversation with the in-laws.

My vote goes for Ducky123’s story the Final Adventure. While both of the entries offered interesting plots and well-crafted emotional scenes, I found the narrative and setting just a bit more effective in Ducky’s entry.

I'd have to say "The Final Adventure," because of how effective the emotions were, and I love how the longnecks are portrayed as being very brave when it comes to accepting their fates.

Doesn't really change anything but just to be fair, I will vote as well!

Both stories were really interesting to read in their unique ways and it was hard to cast a decision. In the end, I have to go with Love is an adventure because of how great the author portraits this rather unusual couple in his story but it is a close one and no story is quite superior to the other ^^spike

I must say I'm truly astonished that every writer seemed to outdo themselves for this special prompt. It was great to see this many people joining this amazing challenge and it's even better to see that we got some of the year's best short stories this month. Even then, I must say I didn't hesitate a lot when I decided which story deserved my vote.  DiddyKF1's fic "A Swim of Silence" managed to create a very strong and deep premise and the way he built his story around a most painful of memories like this was absolutely crushing but also rewarding to read. The fact that this story also served as a memorial to Barsi stoked a flurry of emotions within me like few stories in this challenge's history have. Gorgeous job with that one, DiddyKF1! :yes

Thanks, Sovereign. :) In fact, I can say the same about The Road's End, The Friendship's Rebirth. This prompt was filled with so many strong stories, but this one takes my vote. I strongly agree that friendship can never be broken, even by poor leadership, loss of trust, so many arguments, or (in the case of my entry) the death of a friend or loved one. In the end, the most important thing is that the five kids realize they need each other, even in their moment of accepting their tragic fate, and they stick together to the very end as they take their final journey to the Great Beyond. The Gang never letting their friendship tear itself apart is what will always stick out in my mind.

Oof, this is a difficult decision for sure,,, to be honest, I thoroughly enjoyed reading all of the entries for this month, I have to say that the one that stuck out to me the most was DiddyFK1’s ‘A Swim Of Silence’. It impacted me in more ways than one. Very well done! :D

I like how all three stories in this prompt group use emotional despair at some point within...because the act of making choices always must have cruel, bitter angst in them, don't they? Sorry? Nah, not sorry.

In all seriousness, DiddyKF1's A Swimmer's Sad Secret for me.
Not much hesitation with that decision there, since it works extremely well for what it tries to do: wrapping up the story of A Swim of Silence by Ducky relaying the tale to her friends in a manner not unlike the flashbacks told by the fastbiter pack in Song of the Hunters, where a reader walks in pretty much knowing in advance what some of the tale is about, and thus can predict the eventual reactions of those being told it as well. Perhaps the best part is that the gang all help Ducky get over her grief, closing the book on the tragedy once and for all as Ducky winds up in a better emotional state with six new special friends to call her own.

It's an emotional tale of support in the face of despair more than anything, so I have to give my vote to it this time round. Very nice job!

I'll put my vote in for 'Scrambled Eggs'. Everyone did such an awesome job this month that it was a hard to choose.

This was such a tough one. All of the July entries were filled with such emotion because of choices that had to be made. It was hard to pick between Chomper being killed off as an infant or being taught how to fish to avoid potential banishment. Both situations would have made such good stories, and they did.

In the end, I'm gonna have to go with LBTlover247's "Our Past and Our Future." It was a heartwarming piece about how friendship and loyalty comes first, and Chomper may have bright hopes for his future. Also, I picked it not because of its strong hopes of resolution, but because of how complete it felt compared to the other one.

Sorry, OwlsCantRead, but to me the ending to "Scrambled Eggs" felt incomplete, with no clue on what really happened to the Gang after the Sharpteeth cornered them and no one came to help them, and it kinda left me feeling clueless and wondering what happened next. I'm not the biggest fan of stories that just end like that. I once got slammed for leaving such a cliffhanger in one of my stories, and I learned to never make that mistake again. Still, other than that, the story itself was an emotional thriller, if only I knew how it really came to an end for our beloved heroes.

And I guess that means it's a three-way tie. Good luck trying to break it!  :D

So... we have another tie.  :lol I will send Horizon a PM and see if we can reach a consensus for a tie-breaker.

@DiddyKF1 @OwlsCantRead @LBTlover247

Alright, as I have not heard back from Horizon I will go ahead and make a judgement call here.  And my call... is to let the tie stand.  :p To be perfectly honest, all three entries had well-written narratives that fit the prompt incredibly well, and all were deserving of this prize.  :yes For that reason, DiddyKF1, you may add the three-star banner attached to this post to your signature.  And both LBTlover247 and OwlsCantRead may add any of the one-star banners in this post (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=15338.msg464671#msg464671) to your signature, or you may talk to DarkWolf about possibly getting a custom one-star banner.  Congratulations to all of you!  :)

Once again, please accept my thanks for participating in the fanfic prompt challenge!

The final voting topic for the fanfic awards (for the August 2018 prompt) will be posted shortly.

As always, all entrants to the August prompts were great stories and true pleasures to read. However, I don't hesitate to cast my vote for OwlsCantRead's "Five Stages of Grief" as it was unmatched in terms of how the tale was built as well as written and the range of emotions it raised within me. In fact, I don't think I'm exaggerating in saying it's one of the strongest stories this whole year. :^^spike

I was split between Sovereign and OwlsCantRead's entries, as they both did such a great job at expressing character emotions when it came to their situations. I spent several hours rereading them several times each before I finally managed to come up with my vote. I've decided I'll go for OwlsCantRead's "Five Stages of Grief". I felt it was somewhat of a suspenseful story since it was an AU, and I felt as if I was watching a much more depressing version of "The Big Freeze." The way I felt about this story parallels how Sovereign felt about my "Swim of Silence" story: that this new author has finally proven that he can write such an emotionally powerful story that can touch the hearts of its readers.

I enjoyed reading all of the entries for the August prompt, even if I didn’t get to review them all (laziness strikes again :p), but I’m going to vote for OwlsCantRead’s Five Stages of Grief. It’s not very often that a story affects me so profoundly, and this story did just that :DD

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I'm glad you liked it. :Mo

As for my own vote, I'd debated about it for close to a week. I've re-read all three stories in that time, repeatedly changing my mind multiple times over. I can't help it... everyone did a splendid job for the prompt! :D

In the end, my final vote after much debate goes to Jassy's Deliver Us. Although I've never seen the movie which this fic is based off of, the characterization and cruel ruthlessness where a life is taken and a child orphaned really gripped me, made more suspenseful and shocking because of the mood whiplash from the first half to the second. Plus, I do like Egyptian settings... just a tad.

The other two stories are gripping tales of goodbyes as well. Chomper with his parents... Petrie with his uncle... I suppose it's tradition for Land Before Time authors to feast on the tears of their readers. :cry

I have to say, I'm quite impressed by all of the entries for the December prompt. :) All of them were written excellently and their ideas were really decent. However, being forced to choose from these fics, I'm going to vote for DiddyKF1's the Hurting of Desire which once again showed the author's masterful skills in evoking emotion which, accompanied by the nice premise, make the story a truly memorable one.

This one was a very tough one for me. Strangely, right up until OwlsCantRead and Ducky123's entries came along, I had been sure that this would have ended up what I was getting ready to call the "Petrie Prompt," because there was just so much Petrie in here. Petrie this, and Petrie that! Petrie, Petrie, PETRIE! :opetrie Of course, my prediction ended up being wrong. :lol However, the non-Petrie stories were nicely written, too. :smile

In the end, though, I'm gonna have to go with Rhombus' revived "Pursuit of Endless Day." The author has such talent in describing the old Flyer traditions and how one's beliefs influenced her child into becoming just as much a believer as herself, even though many have died doing the journey he's on now. It has really brought with it an amazing sense of prehistoric religion, and even if such a word doesn't seem LBT-like, I'm not afraid to say that religion has played quite a big role already in this story.

Though I deeply appreciate the vote, @DiddyKF1, I cannot accept it as I have always maintained a policy that the person running the prompt challenge should not be a possible winner of the challenge.  :yes  That being said, I greatly appreciate the gesture.  :) Please feel free to cast a vote for one of the other entries.

(I just now noticed that I accidentally included my entry in the list.  :bang I will go ahead and remove my entry to avoid any further confusion)

Oh, ... um, ... okay. Well, I, uh, that came as quite a surprise for me. :opetrie I didn't have any idea that the person running it shouldn't be voted for, nor did I know that the entry was mistakenly added. At least you know that I greatly appreciated the chapter and look forward to seeing how the story will progress.

In that case, I've been torn between Sovereign's entry and OwlsCantRead's entry, but after so much inner debate, I'm going to vote for Sovereign's "One Fallen, Two Torn Apart." He has once again shown his tremendous ability to mix deep emotions with what I would say is his biggest writing trait, a feeling of uncertainty. The story had me trembling from the attack all the way to the end when Petrie met his "apparent demise." It greatly illustrated one of the many theories we have as to what happened to Papa Flyer, and it gave great depth into what destined Petrie to a terrible family life, as well as the deteriorating sibling relationship between Mama Flyer and Pterano.
Title: Re: Fanfiction Prompt Challenge Voting

I was getting ready to call the "Petrie Prompt," because there was just so much Petrie in here. Petrie this, and Petrie that! Petrie, Petrie, PETRIE! :opetrie
I suppose that a prompt like "belief" tended to fit some with low self-esteem like Petrie more? :Mo

Everyone did a fantastic job (once again, prompt probably lended to that). After mulling over it, I have to go with Sovereign's One Fallen, Two Torn Apart. Apart from actually characterizing Petrie's father, the entire piece (srsly 20K words how) felt like a legitimately prologue of Petrie's family to the entire LBT film series as a whole.

How Pterano's and Volant's relationship wind up strained and changed from what they were to how they ended up by Stone of Cold Fire is the star of this story. Pterano slowly lets his bystander syndrome during his sister's mate death and his guilt turn him into being a more outspoken, egotistical leader to make up for it, and their final argument and separation after apparently losing Petrie as well ended on a dramatic note.

Though it's interspersed with nice familial bonding moments, the melodramatic (it is Pterano) emotions and the souring relationship between the two siblings as time slowly passed just spoke to me. And in a sense, they both believe in themselves and their own separate ways by the end. By the end, I really felt like the catalyst of their crumbling relationship was that one fated death at the start, and while their beliefs have shattered from their original ones before it all started (ie. 'let's be a wonderful family' was what I felt), their new ones are... bittersweet.

Okay, it was a very tough decision for me and I'm still not 100% sure if my vote is justified...

Each and every story posted was nothing short of amazing so picking a winner was tough.

Sovereign's story is excellently portraying a scene the movies never showed us, DiddyKF1's story was an emotional roller-coaster about Petrie suffering from depression and bullying, OwlsCantRead surprised us all with an surprisingly accurate and heart-felt insight into Cera during the time of the first movie.

All stories were top-notch but in the end I will have to go with "The Three horn Way" because out of the three it is the one I had the least flaws with. Well done everyone and sorry for the late vote.

With all of the votes tabulated, Sovereign is the winner of the December 2018 prompt challenge. Congratulations!  :) Please feel free to talk to DarkWolf about your award banner for this year.  You have some options based upon her last post on the issue - including a recoloring of last year's banners (with 2019 instead of 2018) or the use of another banner altogether.  You can talk to her about the details.  :yes

@DiddyKF1 @Ducky123 @OwlsCantRead

As for the other participants you can likewise discuss the matter with DarkWolf in other to get your zero-star participation banners.  And, as always, thank you all for participating in the prompt challenge.  :) I look forward to seeing what you all come up with next.

After a brief delay, it is now time to vote on the winner of the January prompt challenge!  :smile

Just to let those who are interested know, I will be making a belated entry of my own to this prompt (another chapter of Pursuit of Endless Day) but, as is always the case, it would not have been in the running even if it had been posted in time.  I will also be making some belated reviews over the next few days.  I must apologize for the extended delay this time, but real life (in the form of me giving my students midterm examinations and me attending a job interview) intervened.

Without further ado, here are the entries that are open to voting:

One Dangerous Mistake (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16256)

My sincere apologies for the late vote but I've been very busy and only been on the forum infrequently.

My vote goes to Soveriegn's One Dangerous Mistake. Out of the two stories, I must say that I simply enjoyed to read it more on a personal level which probably has to do with the fact that jassy's story was full OC so I had a hard time relating to the characters while that was hardly a challenge in Sovereign's story. The ferocious fight amongst the gang was truly written in a realistical, believable way.

In terms of writing style/quality etc. I couldn't put a finger on who did a better job which is why I'm basing my vote off personal preferance in the first place, both did a tremendous job in that regard, yep yep yep!

Thanks for the votes last month as they mean a lot to me. :Mo As for my own vote, it was far from an easy decision as the stories differed on so many things, most of all length. Diddy, your story was very well written and I can see why so many people like it. I, however, didn't enjoy the premise in any meaningful way and I'm sorry but I can't vote for Secret Love v2.0 for that reason (I didn't read it to the end but I believe I got a good enough impression during the ten first chapters. I'm not proud for leaving the fic unfinished but I thought it would be fair to mention that). As for Ducky's chapter, it managed to create a lot of emotion and warmth to it while also taking the plot forward in a natural way. It was quite strong piece of writing and for that reason, my vote goes to Ducky123's Return to the Land of Mists (chapter 3).
Title: Re: Fanfiction Prompt Challenge Voting

I was sure that was coming, Sovereign, especially after I saw just how long my story really was, and also because I'm aware you're no fan of the Ducky x Petrie shipping. Please don't feel bad for not finishing it, my friend. A story is a story, and there's always time to read the rest until you reach the end. :)

As for my vote, I'd have to go for "A Lovely Deal." I've read it several times since I discovered it, and I haven't looked at Sharpteeth the way I used to. It gave me a whole new view on how I look at those beasts. They're more than just beasts. Sovereign really showed that Sharpteeth indeed have feelings and are very hesitant to show them, especially to each other, or even in front of anyone, meat-eater or leaf-eater. As I mentioned in my initial review, it's an amazing buildup from initial disgust to slowly warming up to each other, and eventually it blossoms into unrequited love.

I have read "Return to the Land of Mists," but because that story is still in its early stages and the Longneck conflict hasn't really ... happened yet, I didn't have much to say other than it's getting a good start in my eyes, but there's still a long way to go.

Oh, and I'll be sure to keep my entries shorter in the future! :lol

Okay, the last few voting periods have been awkward due to a tie in one case (March 2019) and a situation where we only had two votes (February 2019) as such it falls upon me to make a decision in these cases.

@Sovereign

After reading through the entries for February 2019 I fee confident in my choice in naming Sovereign the winner of that month. Though there were three strong entries and each had strong merits on their own, I do think Sovereign's entry set a very high bar.  I have attached your your three star banner to this post, Sovereign.  :)

@Anagnos

For March 2019 there were only two qualifying entries (my stories are not entered in for voting) so the decision fell upon me once again.  After looking through this month's entries once again I was especially take in by Anagnos's story and the unique perspective on Screech and Thud's relationship that it conveyed, which is something that is often overlooked in fanfiction.  As such I am confident in naming Anagnos the winner for March 2019.  :) You may talk to DarkWolf about obtaining a one-star banner for your accomplishment.  :yes

Just as a reminder to everyone else, please keep in mind that the April 2019 and May 2019 prompts are still open so if you have not already done so, please feel invited to give those a try.  I look forward to seeing what you all come up with!

@DiddyKF1

As the only entrant for the April 2019 fanfiction prompt you are the winner of that month.  You may discuss with DarkWolf about obtaining a one-star banner for your accomplishment. :) I am not surprised that particular prompt only had one taker as it seems that the two most challenging prompts are those relating to jokes or romance, but I am glad that we did get some participation out of that one.  :yes

It might seem incredibly cheap, but I was unable to pick to a winner for the May 2019 prompt challenge. This is due to both contributions for that month being very strong entries that explored different aspects of their unique worlds - in one case exploring the backstory of a flyer society's theological and sociological views, and in the other exploring a most savage tradition in threehorn society. Furthermore both stories explored these ideas in a manner that had great emotional resonance with me, and that involved interesting characters.  For that reason, @Sovereign and @Anagnos you both are winners of the May 2019 challenge!  :)  Congratulations!

I have attached your respective banners to this post.  :yes

@Anagnos @Sovereign @DiddyKF1 @OwlsCantRead

My apologies for the delay, everyone. I recently was named a full-time instructor at my college and this has entailed a lot of additional paperwork and meetings as I prepare for the next step in my career.

That being said, we have had a great turnout for the June 2019 prompt challenge.  :) As is the custom, it is now up to our participants for that month to vote for the fanfiction they believe best fulfilled the prompt for that month. The qualified candidates this time are:

The Necessary Truth (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16374.msg483089)
Author: Anagnos
Description: Sometimes the hardest lessons are those you teach yourself. Ruby was not always known to be responsible. One night she decides to venture outside the comfort and safety of her nest. This journey will test her determination to survive through perilous paths that lurk in this world.

Well, I've had a considerable amount of time to ponder who ultimately gets my vote this month. Let me say that all of the entries were absolutely amazing, so picking out the winner wasn't exactly easy for me particularly. I got a half a mind to just pick them all, but there can only be one winner, so obviously I cannot do that. In the end, my vote ultimately goes to Diddy's entry. I really liked the plot in that one as it was quite interesting to see how each member of the Gang thought about their unlikely bond between one another and also their parent's reactions to their friendship. :)littlefoot

Fitting that the biggest lesson of them all for the prompt month of "Lessons" is that it's never easy to opt for one story over another during the ensuing voting process. :thinking

I am a fan of all the entries, but more importantly, I like the various different life lessons that they all tried to inculcate to the protagonists and readers. And in the end, my pick is Sovereign's "A Lingering Mystery", mainly because the lesson that it brings up is something that seems to smash apart the inquisitive nature of the sequels themselves — that despite the Gangs love of adventuring and Littlefoot's eternal pursuit for innate knowledge and curiosity, some things in the world cannot be explained and we just don't know the answer to it.

In a brave new world, that is probably the lesson that hits home most of all. Sometimes, despite everything, we just can't get an acceptable explanation to a phenomenon we cannot comprehend, and we must learn to accept it in spite of our screaming logical brains. It's very similiar to the hidden runner episodes in the TV series, come to think of it.

I also like the other two, though! That sip of familiarity to our real-world reality in this story's lesson and its melancholic end is what edges it out for me.

Of these entries, I must say that OwlsCantRead’s Of Broken Words and Mud Brothers is the strongest one. Even if it is still unfinished, it holds a lot of potential and the two chapters released thus far have been very solid and promising. Mo’s exile from his herd as well as the hope offered to him by Tenor were emotional scenes that shed a lot of light to the swimmer’s thus far obscure past. While the other two tales were good as well, I have to vote for Owls’ story this time. :)

This one was very difficult for me. Eventually, I ended up being torn between Anagnos or Sovereign's entry, since I tend to refrain from voting for incomplete stories. Nevertheless, OwlsCantRead's entry has plenty of potential for unlocking Mo's story for all of us to see.

In the end, I knew it'd be either make it a four-way tie or concede to Sovereign. Both stories were very good, and they greatly showcased lessons that are very difficult to learn for the children we've come to know and love with all our hearts.

Finally, I've decided to give my vote to Anagnos' entry. We've been shown a very fine example of a younger Ruby being so curious about the world around her and almost oblivious to the obvious dangers of the Mysterious Beyond. It was very intriguing to find a story on the "pre-Great Valley" chapter of Ruby's life that we've rarely been able to explore, and it does a fantastic job at explaining her earlier character traits. For those reasons, I give Anagnos my vote.

"Well, good luck with tiebreaker! Heehee!" :)petrie

Well this was quite a difficult tie to break as all four stories were very strong entries. The fact that we had a four-way tie was a testament to that fact.  That being said, I think that I must give OwlsCantRead's entry, Of Broken Words and Mud Brothers, my tie-breaking vote.  It is not yet finished, but thus far it has presented a very interesting premise in a story that features an under-utilized character in the fandom.  For that reason I think that it edges out the other worthy entries.

@OwlsCantRead  I have included your banner in this post.  :)

Ah, thanks! I wasn't expecting this at all so I'm pleasantly surprised.

Just a minor thing I noticed right as I was fiddling with my signature: are the number of stars supposed to roll over every year? Because if it does (I think it does tbh but I really aren't sure) then the accurate score should be a one-star banner since I haven't participated much in 2019. :p Apologies if it's an awkward question to ask in advance, though.

I fear there might have been a slight mistake on Rhombus' part, because that's exactly what I noticed as well, but didn't comment on it. If I recall correctly, Diddy got a brand new banner for winning the April prompt. However, congratulations for winning June's prompt, Owls! You very much deserve it for the amazing work you've put together. :)

@Sovereign @Ducky123 @OwlsCantRead @DiddyKF1 @LeventeII

Good evening, everyone!

The Summer Prompt Exchange has now concluded.  I was quite pleased with the number of responses!  With the exception of myself (my entry will be coming soon, but it would not be open for voting anyway) and jassy, everyone else has posted their entries in the allotted time.  The entries that you can vote on are the following:

The Birth of Something Beautiful (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16436.0)
Author: Sovereign
Description: Many seasons ago, in a land far away, two longnecks struggle to form a bond of eternal love. However, that turns out to be more difficult than at least one of them had hoped but on the stake isn't only their own happiness but the very existence of everything that came afterwards in the world of Land Before Time.
Prompt Responded To: Getting yourself a girlfriend/boyfriend is usually not an easy task. Even worse if the subject of your choice fancies someone else than you. Write a fanfiction set in the LBT universe that features the struggle a character of your own choice to overcome this particular problem. It is completely up to you whether he is successful or not. As an additional spark of inspiration, you may consider using a set-up in which the subject of love interest is struggling with the loss of the one they fancied to further complicate things and add a tragic touch.

The Circle of Life (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16457.msg488917)
Author: Ducky123
Description: After the rapid loss of both grandparents, Littlefoot is feeling terrible and leaving his mate Ali alone to tend to their eggs. It is only through Ali's efforts that he learns the true meaning of the Circle of Life.
Prompt Responded To: "Write a story about sacred beliefs or traditions, involving any one of the Gang's families."

Boundless Curiosity (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16476.0)
Author: OwlsCantRead
Description: On one ordinary day in the Great Valley, Datum and Axiom's leaf-eater friends get a little too interested in how the two rainbowfaces have such a wide myriad of knowledge. Deciding to spy on the pair, they're about to learn that sometimes, one has to rein in their curiosity. Set in Rhombus' Seven Hunters continuity.
Prompt Responded To: "Write a story about the Rainbow Faces. What exactly it is about is entirely up to you. It can be a new meeting, an adventure, their background story or whatever else you can think of about them. 'Your imagination is the limit', as the Rainbow Faces would say."

The Tree Star-Floating Game (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16477.0)
Author: DiddyKF1
Description: My entry for the 2019 Summer Exchange Prompt. On a dreadfully hot summer day, Ducky invents another new water game and invites Petrie to play it with her, but this new game may become just as dangerous as log-running ...
Prompt Responded To: “Things can never stay the same for very long. Write a story about a time where the summer brings about great changes.”
Gang of Five link: http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16477.0
Fanfiction.net link: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13381341/1/The-Tree-Star-Floating-Game

Finally Free (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16481.0)
Author: LeventeII
Description: Freedom. Freedom is a concept to everyone, yet it is difficult to formulate its meaning in one sentence. Everyone has an own idea of freedom, but all these ideas are equally positive. When dinosaurs encounter freedom, it can have small, but also big consequences. Screech and Thud face freedom, but in a form the two hunters never expected.
Prompt Responded To: "Every writer has at least one area where they excel or where they find they have always done especially well. Whether it is a genre, some kind of plot point or a trick with the writing process itself, it is always a good idea to stop for a while and think just how you created your most beloved stories. Even if you are a beginning author, you might have some idea of your strengths and weaknesses already. Write a short story based in the Land Before Time universe where you utilize your best qualities as an author."

The responses were varied and wide this time, I'd say! :duckyhappy I blame the numerous different prompts leading to the vastly different tones and stories we got this time.

The Circle of Life is my choice for this special prompt contest, but it was a really, really close choice between this and Sovereign's, which is another just plain well-written story. While it is relatively short piece, it left a profound impact on me by defining and reflecting on the paradigm shift between the old and the new, with a callback to the series' classic 'Circle of Life moves on regardless' reality check that really lends an edge to the fic by correlating it to real life.

The old adage of "one door closes another door opens" really sells it in my opinion, so I will give this my vote.

Just writing a story for this one was difficult enough to say the least, but voting for one may be just as challenging with so many potential candidates. :opetrie

It may not seem as if I've read all of them due to the lack of reviews I've left, but I have read them all. I slowly limited myself to just a few very strong candidates until I was left between Sovereign and Ducky123's entries. In the end, I decided that Sovereign's The Birth of Something Beautiful should get my vote.

Here, we see something that hasn't really been explored extensively in fanwork, and that is how Littlefoot's parents first got together. Bron had to deal with several tough challenges and his future mate had to make some difficult decisions before they ultimately won each other's hearts and bonded to become one of the least-explored relationships in the series, other than the fact that their relationship led to the birth of the undisputed leader of the Gang and most prominent main character in all of The Land Before Time. We also got to see Littlefoot's curiosities about how his parents first got together and what they had to go through before their relationship blossomed. Sovereign once again does a great job at setting aside his typical disinterest in romance stories to write one that put a smile on my face, and for that reason, he gets my vote.

I second what others have said about the turnout. It's good to see people were still eager to join the exchange prompt and maybe we'll have even more participants next year. :^^spike As for my vote, I have to cast it to OwlsCantRead's Boundless Curiosity. Of the stories submitted, it was the best-built one and its premise of portraying the "new Gang" and the young rainbowfaces' relationship was an extremely interesting one. Of the participants, Owls built the most complete and intriguing story while also deepening the Hunters-saga's overlooked side-characters' personalities in a way that does justice to the original story. For all of these reasons, my vote goes for his story. :duckyhappy

I apologize for the delay!

It was really exciting to read these stories. They were all interesting and exciting in their own way. That made it even harder to make a decision, especially because each story had its own focus on a different topic.

I vote for Ducky's "The Circle of Life".

Although all the stories were exciting and I was always curious about the further development, this story, despite its shorter length, deserved my point especially because of the awakened feelings. There is a successful connection to the Journey through the Mists, which supports this effect even more. In addition, despite the length, the plot is extensive, which further enhances the reading experience.

Nevertheless, the other stories were a great experience and it was a lot of fun to read them. However, the story mentioned above has caught me the most.

This by far isn't an easy decision to make.

Levente's story, although speckled with many beginner's mistakes, had an interesting concept and I enjoyed the story regardless of the poor writing which reminds me a lot of my early days as an author. Levente could be a diamond yet to be polished if he keeps at it :^^spike

DiddyKF1's story was a little below my expectations given his earlier short stories but it was still a decent read :)

Both Sovereign and Owls have written amazing stories that would easily score a 9|10 in my book, however trying to find that one thing destroying the current equilibrium in my mind is hard.

The birth of something beautiful provided us with an incredible tale about past times when Bron met Littlefoot's mother. Not only did he write exactly the kind of story I was hoping to get from this prompt but he also managed to sell the romance, the tragedy, the brotherly conflict and the action scenes really well.

Owls has surprised all of us with a story set in the arguably most popular universe this Fandom has to offer and not only managed to write a fun and intriguing story but also beautifully adapted rhombus' writing style, giving this the feel of the original story.

Both stories are equally well written in my opinion but I would like to commemorate Owls for achieving this extremely well done adaption of the TSH universe with my vote for BOUNDLESS CURIOSITY

(in my honest opinion both are much better than the story I entered, hands down)

@OwlsCantRead @Sovereign @Anagnos

My apologies for the delay, everyone. I have been distracted with work and the forum awards and as a consequence I forgot that the voting for the summer prompt challenge had concluded. As the result of this vote was a tie between Boundless Curiosity and The Circle of Life.  Though both of these stories were great in their own right, with each showcasing the excellent writing of their respective authors, I absolutely adored how OwlsCantRead's story explored the personalities of characters who have until now not really had a chance to shine in the source material.  As such I cast my tie-breaking vote for his story.  :Mo  Your two-star Taunt banner is attached to this post.

For the August 2019 challenge there were only two entries, which means that I need to also determine a winner between the two participants. Both of these entries were incredibly strong and had their own merits, and as such it will take me a few days before I announce my decision for that month.  :yes

Well, this was certainly one of the most difficult tie-breaking decisions that I have had to make for the prompt challenge.  Though both of the entries for August were incredibly strong entries that provided deep insights to their selected characters, ultimately I feel that Sovereign's story, Of Hubris and Submission, deserved the win in this case.  Congratulations, Sovereign, on becoming the first five-star winner in the history of the fanfic prompt challenge!  :Mo

And with that the fanfic prompt challenge for 2018-2019 comes to an end.  I will have a post up in a few minutes detailing the proposed prompts for the 2019-2020 prompt challenge. I look forward to seeing what all of you come up with next year!  :)littlefoot

Breaking Strain (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16570.msg497465)
Author: Anagnos
Description: When a viscous disease invades the Great Valley, the answer to their problem is far out of the imminent reach. Of Loss and Discovery (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16580.0)
Author: Ducky123
Description: The two swimmer children Nishir and Takari couldn't be more different but, regardless, they're very close friends. Living in a small, sheltered valley near the coast with their small herd, their life is full of games, laughter and ridicule for those two. Nishir hates Takari because of her passion to make fun of him whenever physically possible. She's always pranking, teasing or embarrassing him as well as winning most of their games, however he is also enticed by her ways and her good looks. Too shy to admit his feelings and too afraid to be the center of the girl's ridicule, their relationship stalls despite Takari's obvious hints and Nishir reluctantly accepts the frequent humiliation. However, things change dramatically for the two swimmers when, suddenly, they lose everything they ever cared about. Left with only each other, their despair and a faint hope of a new land across the Big Water, they set out on a journey not only to find a new home but to find themselves as well.

Deliberated and mulled on it for quite some time, because I really liked all of the entries for this prompt for a host of different reasons. So much so that I'm actually gonna list out what I liked about each for once.

Breaking Strain: Really liked Petrie growing a spine and taking charge of a bad situation. So much for the bystander effect. That part sold this story and is a great Petrie character study.
Of Loss and Discovery: Loved the belligerent bantering, the third-person limited works very well for suspenseful comedy and introspection, and especially complimented the characterizations of Takari and Nishir.
We All Have Dreams: all-around great characterization and dialogue for the gang, more so then any other fic thus far from this author. Could feasibly pass for as an episode for the TV series.

I had to debate this innately for a while, but I've decided tol vote for Ducky123's Of Loss and Discovery this month. I'm a huge fan of mutual pining slow burn stories (surprise, surprise), and while unfinished, it is still invigorating, and the two introduced OCs are really swimmers you get attached to and root for. :)

Well, getting back into the prompts did seem pretty challenging for me, not just in writing, but in voting, too. All three of my fellow entrants came up with fantastic stories to kick off the new year, and having to choose one is something to feel excited about, but also regret toward those I don't vote for.

This one seemed just as much a Petrie month as last year's December prompt. It seems that December seems to be the best time of the year to write about our favorite Flyer. :)petrie.

After much self-debate, I've elected to vote for OwlsCantRead's "Weathered Gorge". This one really went into such great detail about Petrie's many misgivings and his doubts about his own self. Everything from the "Sidekick Effect" to his troubled past were very nicely explained as it gives us a clearer picture of why Petrie looks down on himself and strives to be something he can't quite be, as we find out in the end. Although the gorge itself may have been a little rushed, the ending with Petrie finally accepting the way he is was great redemption, not only for the story but also for the Flyer we've all come to love. I would say that the motto for this story is that you should be happy just the way you are no matter what others say about you, and Petrie learned that lesson the hard way.

"Breaking Strain" was a very interesting story in that we get to see Petrie take a role no one would have ever expected, but "Weathered Gorge" gets my vote for being a great Petrie character study. :)petrie

I feel like it's about time that I finally cast my vote, lest I completely forget about it and people get mad at me for that mistake. :oops So, a new prompt season is off to a rather good start. There have been relatively few entries, but all of them have explored royally important and intriguing plot points. And while most of us (I blame no one for being a copycat :p) went for Petrie centered stories for December. It'll be mildly interesting to see whether we'll be able to keep this trend up, but in the meantime, time to cast our votes for this year's prompt season.

Confession time, it wasn't exactly hard to decide whom I was going to vote for in this prompt, and while people may point their finger at me for this decision, I feel like the best December entry was Diddy's We All Have Dreams, which is why I don't hesitate to cast my vote for him. ;)

Well, well, well... it looks like we have another 3-way tie, as Ducky123 will not be available to cast a vote for the December voting period.   I will allow people 24 hours to change their votes if they wish and thereafter, if we still have a tie, I will cast a tie-breaking vote.  :bestsharptooth

Well, I'm the one who actually is forced to change their vote, since my original vote was for Ducky's story and that would be invalidated without his vote. :sducky

My new vote will be for DiddyKF1's We All Have Dreams, then. The gang was really in character throughout, and the way that they react to their dreams and aspirations as a collective and cohesive group was very poignant and well-written. :)

I will be waiting until Tuesday, March 10 to open up voting for the January 2020 prompts so as to allow everyone the chance to read the stories which were posted right before the deadline.

@Sleeping-force's-inside @Anagnos @Sovereign @rhombus @OwlsCantRead

My apologies for being two days late, everyone.  But on the bright side this should have allowed everyone the chance to review the stories that we had on offer from January.  For the January prompt we had five strong entries and quite the selection of explored themes and characters.  For this voting period (which will end at 11:59:59 PM forum time on March 26, 2020) each of you will have the opportunity to vote for the following entries:

Trapped (chapter 3) (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16527.msg499093#msg499093)
Author: Sleeping-force's inside

Description: Remorse is virtue's root; its fair increase and fruits of innocence and blessedness touch all living creatures. Days after his expulsion from the valley, luck of fortune grants Pterano a chance to finally put his past behind him once and for all, but will it prove to be his downfall once the dark past he concealed is brought up from the shadows of his failure?

Despite the prompt for January being perplexity, the real perplexing thing is how all five stories end their story conclusions with at least some form of ambiguity. :bestsharptooth What an unexpected surprise. (gets shoved out of door)

In all seriousness, my choice for this month is Sovereign's A Glider's Long Day. The choice of Guido as the star and the focus on his unexplored past might seem like a perplexing (haha) choice, but I do really like how the focus of the fic shows how dangerous the concept of social exclusion is as Guido finds himself pressured and coerced into something he would not normally do by his peers just to feel included, something which eventually backfires on him when his fair-weathered friends flee for themselves after things go south. :sducky

While it mainly meets the quote prompt and does not fit the key main prompt as well as other entries, the tragic intones of the loss of Guido's old life and potential to expand beyond its initial idea gives it quite an edge overall, and thus it is my choice for this month. :)

GAH I GOTTA VOTE I DID NOT CONSIDER THIS I AM BAD AT FEEDBACK

Eeerrrr.... I guess my vote goes to Anagnos' Ballad of Endless Remorse mostly because I always found it a failing of the Seventh movie not to delve a bit deeper into Pterano and that entire debacle. I guess it's the need for Kid-friendliness. :>

My vote was largely a contest between Hidden Needs and Snowballed Lies and in the end, I'll cast it for Snowballed Lies. While rhombus' story was a great read and an interesting continuation to his Petrie AU, Owls' story built a deeper and more emotional narrative which tipped the balance in his direction. :^^spike

I must second Sovereign's vote by also casting my vote for Owls' entry of Snowballed Lies. His story provided a personal look at Mr. Thicknose, his curiosity about life, and how his pride led to his fall. As one of the most powerful character studies posted in quite some time, I feel it definitely deserves my vote.

Brat (https://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16760.0)
Author: RainbowFaceProtege
Description: My first prompt entry, aaahhh!! For the February/March 2020 fanfiction prompt: "The birth (or hatching) of one's first child is always a wondrous and joyful experience, but it is also incredibly daunting.  Now there is a new life on this planet which is dependent on your support and love.  Write a story where a new parent or parents must deal with the challenges of their first nest." I considered several different characters as my potential new parent(s). Eventually, though, I decided that it would be most fun (and challenging) to narrow it down to a character or characters you would never picture as a parent, someone who'd be utterly out of their element in the role. Sierra it was--though I admit Ozzy and Strut were so close to being the ones I chose, but I was afraid it'd turn out a little too Great Valley Adventure-ish.

Ooh, I'm egg-cited to read the other entries! :lol

Alright, puns aside now. I'm sorry I haven't read any of these yet. I've been terrible about making time to read fanfics or anything else lately. I'll be sure to check these out and place my vote! :DD

UPDATED:
Okay, I've finished reading! :)littlefoot I enjoyed all three fanfics, but The Long Night is going to be my vote. When I realized the longneck I was reading about was Littlefoot's mother, it was sort of a "whoa!" moment. We may have seen that movie scene before, but showing it through Littlefoot's mother's eyes was quite a creative idea. Plus, nostalgia. :smile

I liked seeing Petrie hatching in the prologue to The Tragic Cycle Prologue, since that was something I always thought was missed out on in the original LBT. It was very well-written, but Petrie's characterization wasn't quite my cup of tea. I never imagined that he was born that timid. In my head, he became that way after he'd tried to fly once and only narrowly escaped a terrible accident in the process. That's just a personal opinion of mine, however, not so much a reflection on the fanfic itself. Watching Petrie's parents react to their children being born was sweet, and I liked that Pterano was part of the moment, too.

Who Mentioned Eggs to Mr. Threehorn? was a good first fanfiction entry. Having it told from Tria's viewpoint was very unique--nice to see first-person point of view being used, since that's pretty rare for fanfics. Everyone seemed in character, too, which was something I had issues with in my first fanfics. (Yeah, those old things'll never see the light of day.) Keep writing, UnionRags, I look forward to seeing what else you come up with! :yes

I currently don't have the energy to read through a fic and write up a review :( I get bursts of energy, but always have something else I need to prioritize when i do.

A month ago I tested as recovering from Mononucleosis, and am still not over it.

I don't know when my energy will return.

Sorry about this...(but also not really sorry tbh, because there's not anything I can do about it and with the way things are for me currently...a fanfiction voting is not high on my priorities list).

@UnionRags123 You're not alone. I also have not taken the time to read any of the other fics beside my own, so my vote also remains empty for now.

My dedication to fanfiction has dwindled quite a bit in the last few weeks because I'm still recovering from PTSD due to events in recent weeks regarding this community.

@UnionRags123  There is no need to withdraw stories on account of this. The only rule concerning voting is that if one does not vote then they are not eligible to win the prompt challenge for that month. I just wanted to give everyone a reminder in case they wanted to vote.  :yes

But given that Union and Diddy both do not wish to vote, that means only Brat and The Long Night are left, meaning Stardust is left with no choice but to vote for RainbowFaceProtege's entry. With two entrants left (and given that The Long Night is the sole vote thus far), wouldn't that mean that you have to break this unusual month's voting?

Okay. I've finally made up my mind on which story I'm picking for the February prompt. After I spent some time reading over the fanfics, I eventually found one I think deserves my vote: StardustSoldier's "The Long Night". It provided a great insight into the thoughts of a mother (hopeful) as she faces the high stakes of continuing the family bloodline in such a hostile environment. Littlefoot's hatching feels like a blast from the past that I greatly enjoyed reading. The author did a fantastic job at staying loyal to the original material while at the same time adding more emotional touches to an already emotional hatching that forever changed the course of events. For those reasons, that gets my vote.

@Sleeping-force's-inside @UnionRags123 @DiddyKF1 @RainbowFaceProtege @StardustSoldier

Alright, the voting period for February is now over.  With two votes in your favor, the winner is StardustSoldier.  Congratulations!  :DD

After examining the formal rules for the fanfiction prompt challenge it does look like that the "voting is required to be qualified to win" was never actually formalized in the text of the rules themselves. Due to this, and considering the circumstances of the moment, I will use make the judgement call to allow a one-star banner here if you want one, Stardust.  As always, everyone else who participated in February may have the participation banner of their choice if you have not already selected one for this year.  :yes  If you need to pick out a banner please let Darkwolf know by PM.

Now this brings us to the March prompt.  Due to there being only one entry for that month the result is rather obvious.  :bestsharptooth Congratulations, Sleeping-force's-inside, you may select the one-star banner of your choice.  Just let Darkwolf know about your character preference by PM.  :yes

Wow, I was not expecting that win. Thank you so much, everyone.

Again, I apologize for not being more active myself. Just, yeah... crazy times, as I mentioned.

Congrats on your win, Sleeping.

@OwlsCantRead @Anagnos @LBTlover247

My apologies for the delay, everyone.  The new semester has been off to a rough start with the double whammy of dealing with Covid-19 and also being faced with a campus fire that required us to go to online-only instruction with no notice whatsoever.

I was very pleased to see the level of participation in June, as this is usually a month that is faced with a downturn in activity due to the temptations of the summer months.  :)  All three entries were enjoyable reads with their own unique strengths.  With that in mind, it is now time for all three participants to vote for the story (but not their own) that they feel were the best entry during the month of June.  For reference I have included the list below:

Quote
The Propeller Swimmer (https://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16917.0)
Author: OwlsCantRead
Description: Born with an abnormally large and cumbersome tail which inhibited her ability to walk, let alone swim, Pellie had the odds stacked against her from the very moment she hatched. This is the tale of how a stubbornly determined swimmer managed to overcome the odds and turn what was once her greatest disability into her greatest asset.

Lost in Nightmares (https://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16919.msg516769#msg516769)
Author: Anagnos
Description: Continuation for A Grief Observed. Adapting is not always like a walk in the park. For Shorty, it was twice the trouble to make it to the finish line with his innocence intact. But what if the damage has already been done and irreversible? This is the next chapter in the life of a lost soul who found redemption in the most unlikely place and turned over a new leaf as a result.

Our Past and Our Future (chapter 6) (https://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16028.msg517467#msg517467)
Author: LBTlover247
Description: Adolescence is an awkward time of self discovery as well as physical growth. Chomper seems to experience this the most because of his Sharptooth heritage. But when he and his friends meet an unlikely friend during one of their adventures, things might be turning out for the better. Series of Slice of Life Oneshots related to "Past and Future".

My vote goes to Anagnos' Lost in Nightmares. I admit, I actually did like the teeth-clenched teamwork between the females in Our Past and Our Future, but Shorty's journey from self-doubt and loneliness and despair to acceptance and finally growing his bond with Bron and later Littlefoot really sold me on my choice. :bronGoodJob

I'll go with Lost in Nightmares  as well.  I like how we got to see Shorty's characterization  grow.

My vote goes to LBTlover's Our Past and Our Future. I particularly liked the part where Cera and Arya had to resolve their quarrel to get out of hot water. That scene was one of the key factors that lead me to this outcome. All of the entires (excluding mine, I do not wish to sound pompous :p) were very good additions, and I had to consider carefully which one I liked the most. :)

Sorry about that, everyone! I kind of lost track of time due to work and everything else that is going on right now.  :rhett_ohno

With the votes now in, Anagnos is the winner of the June prompt challenge.  :) You may contact Darkwolf about obtaining your banner for this accomplishment.

As there were only two entries for the July prompt, I will make a tie-breaking decision for that month in the next few weeks.  In the meantime, I wish everyone who is participating in the Summer Prompt Exchange the best of luck with their projects.  :) Also keep in mind that if your entries are done by the end of the month that they can be included in this year's forum fanfic awards.

Yep!  I am still in the process of determining what the next set of prompts should be.

Is the prompt deadline duration going to be extended, or is that still under consideration?

Aye, that is still being considered.  I will probably ask for input on the various options before a final decision is made.

@rhombus: What options are you considering?
Title: Re: Fanfiction Prompt Challenge Voting
Post by: rhombus on September 29, 2020, 10:34:25 AM
@rhombus: What options are you considering?

I was considering perhaps having fewer prompts but having a longer writing period (3 months), but that idea had its own share of problems.  Another idea was to use longer writing periods (3 months, for example) but to have 3 or so prompts as options.  Then there could be a vote on the entries for each of the available prompts that had entries.  But there was one idea that had more appeal to others when I brought it up on Discord.

This alternative plan would have set prompts for each two-month period, as it is now, but people would also offer a suggested prompt at the beginning of the year which any writer could reserve and use in place of a month's prompt.  So each month would have an announcement like this:

So for each period then I would post something like this:

Quote
For this two-month period here are the following prompts you can utilize.  You can respond to both prompts as two separate stories if you wish, but you only need to submit one story to participate.

Utilize this character: XXX (an underused character would be here)

Use this plot concept: XXX (standard prompts as we use now)

Or, alternatively, you can respond to any of these requested prompts from the beginning of the year.  Please keep in mind that you need to PM me if you are going to do any of these so that they can be marked off of the list, as they are first-come-first-serve:

XXX (these would be prompt suggestions that people submitted to me at the beginning of the year and they would disappear as they are used)

XXX

First impressions for me are that this could actually work better than the previous system we've had until now. In the scenario that a lot of people are interested in a lot of these prompts, does that mean that they will eventually run out and more people can't participate? That just came into mind when you said they're first-come-first-serve.

I suppose we could allow multiple people claiming a single suggested prompt.  My main concern would be that one suggested prompt would get all of the attention and then several others would be ignored.  But we have never used this system before, so my concerns might be unfounded.  Though I am unsure how to do voting for suggested prompts unless that is handled at the very end of the year.

It is a possibility. Myself, I always went for the major prompt and barely even scratched the surface of the other options. It was easier for me to come up with a plan rather than make one out of one word or piece of dialogue. I suppose the only way we'll know for sure how this kind of a system would work is to actually try it. If it works better and the concerns are unfounded, that's great. Trial and error.

In that case would it be smart to set up a specific number of people that can claim a single suggested prompt? This of course relies heavily on the amount of participants. If there are only a few then they can either take the same one or a different one. There's definitely a lot to take into consideration here, but I feel it can work.

Good evening, everyone!

My apologies for posting this so late, but I suppose it is better late than never.  :bestsharptooth  For the month of April we had quite the abundance of excellent entries.    For this voting period (which will end at 11:59:59 PM forum time on July 5, 2021) each of you will have the opportunity to vote for the following entries:

Quote
A New Era Hatches (https://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=17153.msg525752#msg525752)

Description:  Imprinting is a funny thing sometimes.  But, for three orphaned hidden runners, species means little.  Thankfully for them, Mother Mender is there in their first moments.

I am extending the voting period for one week in the event that you wish to vote.  :yes I want to try to avoid acting as a tie-break if at all possible, especially as I participated in this particular prompt. So sorry @rhombus and everyone!  It seems I missed this notification!  I really wanted to vote, but Hurricane Elsa's knocked out the power in my area on my island for almost 5 days and I think it seriously threw off my social media groove!  I'm only just seeing it now, minutes after the deadline!  Anyway, I'm still willing.  If you could just wait a little longer, I should cast a vote a little later tonight, once I've finished reading the other stories.

If still applicable, I've  come to a conclusion.  The entries delivered great quality in different ways, and it comes down to a tough toss-up between 'Night Night Flower' and 'A New Era Hatches'.  If I'd read more of 'Mender's Tale', I'd probably have a stronger connection and sense of continuity with the setting and its components.  I've decided to vote for Night Night Flower, as it conclusively packs a brief, but evocative glimpse into the unique perspective of the prompt and Gentle Sharptooth's imagination.
