Hey, where has the famous people game gone? I wanted to respond to myself to get it going again. However, I suggest that we give the last leter of the previous name a try rather than the A - Z variant. There are not too many celebrities whose name begins with a Q (even the indian chiefs would've probably failed me some day). So lets begin.
Abraham Lincoln
-
^I thought I transferred this game over but I guess I didn't. ^_^
Nelson Mandella
-
Anthony Hopkins - Actor who featured (among other) in the silent of the lambs
(I forgot to add a short remark before, but I strongly suppose everyone knows who Abraham Lincoln and Nelson Mandela were respectively are).
-
Scott McAfee Known to us as the voice of Littlefoot in the sequels 2-4.
-
Earl Warren - American politician. Republican chief justice of the Supreme Court from 1952 to 1969. He supported the civil rights movement and voted for banning segregation from American schools. However, his name is mostly associated with the so called "Warren report", a report made by a commission lead by Warren about the assassination of JFK that concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald was the "lone nut" assassinator. The "Warren Report" is disputed to this day.
-
Neil Armstrong - The first guy to (supposedly) walk on the moon.
-
Gaius Julius Caesar - roman army leader who triggered a civil war and managed to get so much power that it was the end of the Roman Republic and the empire arouse. He was stabbed by conspirators who feared the results of his ever growing power on the ides of march (March 15th) 44 b.c.
-
Roseanne - comedian Roseanne Barr
-
Erich Ludendorff - German general in WW1 who lead the last big offensive by the Germans in 1918. After the end of the war he claimed that Germany had not been defeated but that the army had been "stabbed" from behind by revolutionaries. He supported Hitler's party until 1928.
It's difficult to find a famous person with an E that does not enforce a very difficult letter such as a Y on the next one. Maybe we shold consider if in some cases the one who posts a name here may allow the next one to use another but the last letter by underlining the first one of the lastname.
-
Faith Hill - country singer
-
Lyndon B. Johnson - John F. Kennedy's vize president who succeded him after the assassination. Strongly criticized for letting the war in Vietnam escalate.
-
Nathan Lane
-
^ who is Nathan Lane?
Edward Mick Mannock - British WW1 fighter pilot who was blind on one eye and shot down 73 planes before he was killed by groundfire himself.
-
 Nathan Lane played the voice of Timon in the Lion King (english version)
Kate Winslet - she's the queen of the world and flying on the bow of Titanic
-
Tony Wilson - he owned factory records.. or sort of.. watch the movie 24 hour party people and you'll get it =P
-
Napoleon Bonaparte - The only famous person that comes to my mind who is better known by his first than by his last name. French general who later made himself first counsule and finally emperor of France. He lead many wars against almost every other European country and conquered huge regions. Than again he did spread a very modern and enlighted law code in the regions he occupied. In 1813 he was military defeated and forced to go into exile. He returned though in 1815 but met his Waterloo, well at Waterloo. After that he was brought to the island St. Helena where he died in 1821.
-
Elijah Wood - An famous actor (I think) though I've never seen him in anything...
-
^ I guess you did see him. He was Frodo in the lord of the rings, and for all I know you did see at least one (maybe more, dunno) of the lord of the rings movies.
Dietrich von Bern - hero from a medieval saga. Knight who probably had a historical model in the Goth king Theoderich.
-
Nelly - I think he's a pretty famous rapper in this country...I don't listen to that genre but I had to put down something for n. :P
-
Yinzong - Chinese Emperor
I suggest that in case we come up with a name ending with a Y the one who posts it may underline a letter different from the last one. The world is not exactly swarming with people whose first name begins with a Y, and after we've had Yuri Gagarin and some Japanese and Chinese emperors I'm afraid the lack of Y might cause a repetition. On the other hand the many names that end with a Y should not be banned (I've avoided Elvis Presley before in order to spare you a Y).
Another suggestion is that in case of the Y it is okay if a persons last name begins with a Y as well (there are more last than first names with this letter).
-
Gillian Gilbert - She was keyboards on New Order and she was also singer and basse in The Other Two, band formed with Steve Morris (New Order's drummer) after the band split up for a couple of years.. They dated till the early 90's then something happened I don't know what. In 2001 she left New Order, for reasons unknown to me.. and has dissapeared from music highlights since then...
-
Thomas Jonathan Jackson - confederate general during the US civil war who was nicknamed "Stonewall". He was accidentally shot and mortaly wounded by his own men during the battle of Chancellorsville.
-
Nicholas Cage (I think you spell it like that.. dunno) - He's some sort of an actor
-
Edwin McMasters Stanton - American lawyer, justice minister, and secretary of defense from 1862 to 1868. When President Andrew Johnson tried to fire him, he baricaded himself in his office.
-
Nancy Cartwright - if my memory serves me right, she was the voices for Dana and Dinah in LBT 6
-
Thomas of Aquin - English medieval clergyman, scholar and philosopher whose studies and philosophies left a a lasting impression in Europe.
-
Nelson A. Rockefeller - US vice-president under Gerald Ford (from 1974 to 1977)
-
I'll give it a last try to keep the memory to these games up. Maybe they found a more interesting replacement with the "Who am I" and "Guess the place" games.
Robin Hood - English mythological character with a historical background (in late 12th / early 13th century). According to the legend an outlaw who took from the rich to give to the poor.
-

-
Sparticus-a gladiator slave who led an army of slaves against the Roman Empire (also played by a famous actor (misplaced the name) in a long but good movie).
-
^ I saw the movie not too long ago. The actor you are refering to is Kirk Douglas.
Santa Anna - Mexican dictator in the 19th century.
-
^I only saw that movie once a few months ago, so I must of forgotten the name pretty quick.
Anne Frank-a Polish Jewish girl who died in the Holocaust just a few weeks before her camp was liberated. Her famous diaries were recovered by her father a few years after the war.
-
^ I've been to the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam, and I have read a lot about her and her families fate. It is so horrible that, with all it's horror, it was but one out of millions of fates determined by the most horrible crime.
Kirk Douglas - the famous actor mentioned above for playing Spartacus.
-
Sam Neill- actor who starred as the legendary wizard Merlin in a NBC miniseries
BTW Malte, Stanton was the answer to the question you posed in the Great Valley forum. Stanton was a radical Replublican, and a holdover from the Lincoln administration. When Johnson tried to fire him, the radical Republicans impeached him.Ludendorff left the Nazis in 1925, after the party had thrown its support to Hindenburg.
Nick
-
^ Yes, Edwin McMasters Stanton was the one I was refering to. Maybe I should start an American history quiz over here?
Lewis Wallace - American author who is especially known for his novel "Ben Hur".
-
Ernst Rohm- head of the SA, shot during the purge of June 30-July 1, 1934.
Nick
-
^ And yes, Malte, you should start a US History thread. That way I can keep my facts straight.
Nick
-
^Matthew Brady - very famous American 19th century photographer. Most of the famous photos from 19th century America were made by him or his assistants.
(The only thing I'm worried about is, that other people may not be too interested in these history threads, so it may be misinterpreted as some attempt to brag with knowledge, which is not my intention.)
-
^ Sorry, that name has a nasty ending letter. With Yuri Gagarin and most Chinese and Japanese emperors having been named before I think it is perfectly fine if you go for the d (last but one letter) for the next person.
-
(I understand you're concerned about how some people might percieve it as showing off, Malte. But as long as we make it interesting, there should be no problems.)
Don Knotts- famous movie actor
Nick
-
Salvatore Dali - surrealistic painter. Not exactly my cup of tea to be honest.
-
Isabella Rosselini- Italian actress

Nick
-
Louis XVI. - absolute French king. He was beheaded on the guillotine during the French revolution on January 21st 1793.

Elijah Wood - Actor who played Frodo in the lord of the rings triology.
-
Daniel Ratcliffe - star of the Harry Potter films
-
Edgar Wallace - British whodun author.
It is the curse of names that very many of them end either with an e or an n. So I suggest that rather than taking the last letter in the name we ought to chose the first letter of the last name (W in this case) for the first letter of the next characters first name. It might make the whole game less limited to few letters, for last names begin less uniform than they end. Alright?
-
Sounds good to me.
Wes Craven- author

-
Thomas Jefferson - wrote the draft of the declaration of independence. He was the 3rd US President. The Louisiana purchase falls into his presidency. Even though he was critiziced for issuing the Embargo Act of 1807 (which prohibited any oversea trade to prevent US ships from being attacked by the navies of France or England), he is considered one of the smartest US presidents ever.
He always empahsized the need of a power with as little influence on peoples' private lifes as possible. He did sort of counteract himself in the way he pushed through the Embargo Act.
-
John Brown- hanged for attempting to seize Harper's Ferry
Nick
-
^ They still argue about whether he is to be considered a heroic figure (trying to free slaves) or a terrorist (murdering people and violating law). It's an irony of history that the first person being killed by John Brown's men during the raid on Harpers Ferry was a free African American.
Taking someone from the same time:
Benjamin Butler - Federal general during the civil war. He was one of the first to arm freed slaves to fight for the union. He didn't prove much of a general or a politician though. In the south he became one of the most hated federal generals for issuing the following order:
"As the officers and soldiers of the United States have been subjected to repeated insults from the women (calling themselves ladies) of New Orleans, in return for the most scrupulous noninterference and courtesy on our part, it is ordered that hereafter when any female shall, by word, gesture, or movement, insult or show contempt for any officer or soldier of the United States, she shall be regarded and held liable to be treated as a woman of the town plying her avocation."

Anne Heche- Actress
Nick
-
^ The nazis often tried to abuse parts of Germany's history for their purposes (the nazi greeting with the stretched out arm and the call "Heil" are just two examples). I wonder though if Hitler was aware of the fact that Barbarossa passed laws to protect jews in his realm from arbitrary attacks.

Mickey Mantle-Baseball legend
Nick
-
^ Nope, you are confusing him with General John Pope who was defeated in the second Bull Run battle. McClellan never got his command again after Lincoln dissmissed him when he failed to pursue Lee after the battle of Antietam. Lincoln could not simply dismiss the "victor of Gettysburg", but due to general Grants assignment as the leader of all Union armies Meade's de facto power as the commander of the Army of the Potomac was little. He held that command up to the end of the war though.
