Title: What's your personal favorite "Game Over" screen?
Post by: 2007excalibur2007 on January 25, 2010, 11:06:38 AM
Remember the "GAME OVER" screens? Those dreaded screens that show up every time you lose in a certain video game or in arcades? Don't you just love seeing those annoying-yet-catchy screens? :p

My personal favorites are the ones from Daytona USA and Sega Rally Championship, But I like the Sega Rally one better than Daytona's - seriously, it makes me wanna lose on purpose everytime I play it just to hear the tune:

"Game over, YEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6aRwky0W5Y) :lol

Daytona USA had a very catchy Game Over screen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zW3O51c3kdE) too, and after all these years, I can STILL hear it in my head, and I haven't been playing the game for quite a long time either!

So what are YOUR personal favorite "Game Over" screens? :)

One of mine would have to be the various ones you would get in Batman: Arkham Asylum. The one you would get when you die would depend on the enemy you're fighting.

Was just going to mention that one myself actually.  Those ones are awesome ^^

And in Left 4 Dead I think it is where it'll come up with in blood red, "You are dead"

I always liked the Game Over screen in Shadow Of The Colossus, it shows an insignia while playing extremely depressing music as a result making feel like you just died  :boohoo

There's also the game over screen in Daytona USA which includes a song the lyrics are: G,A,M,E,O,V,E,R G-A-M-E-O-V-E-R  GAMEOVER(3x).

I can't get that song off my head - it's as if the game's making fun of you for losing. :lol

It's also interesting how they pronounced the letter V as "voo" instead of "vee". :p

I don't about "favorite" Game Over screens, since I'm usually experiencing ager and frustration while they play, but I ca say without doubt that I find the original Super Mario Bros. G.O. screen to be the most memorable.

My favorite is from King's Quest VI: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPLFol0Gh-E&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPLFol0Gh-E&feature=related) (wait until after each death or skip to the end.)

Funny thing is, if you play the longer, complete path of the game, you HAVE to pass the death "game over" screen while still alive.

I can't remember which one it was, but there was a silent hill game with a game over screen that I just never forgot. It was very disturbing. Everything was flickering, like your tv was messing up, there was a very eerie sound playing in the background, there were all sorts of textures in the background of what looked like blood-stained metal, and even the words "Game Over" in the center had a very unnerving appearance. You know how most game over screens make you want to throw the television out the window? Well this just made you stare as if it was hypnotizing you or something. It was truly like a work of art.

Yeah, I know, it just makes you think you've done something wrong to activate it is all :p

Still, I do like when in that part, how Joker shoots Batman and it tells you in the gameover screen that you were suppose to dodge the bullet with the middle stick
Especially since there's no middle stick at all....and you were suppose to be shoot in the end :DD

X-wing always used to have a cool "You're dead" animation. You'd get to see your own casket dropped from the hangar of whatever ship you were stationed on, and you'd get a military salute and everything.

There's  a game called Fate/stay night. If you die, you get a sequence in which a hyperactive woman and a little girl cal you an idiot and tell you what you did wrong while putting on slapstick Stooge-style.

Don't really like Pokemon anymore but I always found it hilarious that when you lose all your Pokemon, the character "blacks out" or as some of the games put it "whites out". Even as a kid, it would leave me with a "WTF?!" feeling. Seriously? Losing a Pokemon battle is so shocking that they black out from it? And I thought the Yu-Gi-Oh! characters were overdramatic.

Here's one I always found amusing. It's at the end of the one and only Fridya the 13th game. "Game Over. You and your friends are dead." How lovely for a children's game...

In Grand Theft Auto 4, when you get arrested, the cops make funny (and vulgar)comments like:

1. When we get back to the station I'm gonna beat you with a phone book!

2. I hope you're ready for the prison showers, idiot!

3. Bubba's gonna love you in lockup!

4. I have found weapons!  Guess who's going to jail!

5. Try to run again and I'll shoot your balls off!

The Resident Evil games have cool game over screens too.

The absoluteley fabulous ethical Game Over screen you get in Steel Battalion when you fail to eject from your Vertical Tank in time.

You go to load your character, and it's gone.

Mech exploded with you still in it? Pilot dies. Saved games wiped clean. Your face gapes in horror. Hours of progrees, gone. You lose. Friends laugh at you. The end.

...

New game.

The G.O. screen from Street Fighter II, where you see have to see your opponent's comment (Zangeif to Guile: next time we meet I'm gonna break your arms), then you have the usual countdown and if you fail to insert a coin or press start your characters portait turns black & white and you hear him or her groan in agony, I swear when I first saw this when I lost as Ryu, I thought he died.

Another Street Fighter game that has an intresting Game Over screen is the arcade version of Street Fighter The Movie: The Game, it has the usual countdown and when it goes to zero you'll hear M.Bison (Raul Julia) yell "Game Over" from the 1994 movie, its  pretty cool.

I've got one!

Remember that Game Over screen from Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped? You know, the blue swirling background has instead been turned to red, Uka Uka appears, and says to you in a deep, bursting demonic voice: "GAME OVER." Boy, that game over screen was awesome. Even if was terrifingly scary.

I liked GTA V screen of Game over, when mission failed in any way.

In GTA IV I liked not exactly the screen of it, but I liked the phone calls after failed mission, that Niko made, when game resumed.

I liked Jak and Daxter Game over screen, but I did not play it, just have seen on Youtube, I just found it funny, what daxter said.

I also liked game over screen from Age of Empires III, when I lost the mission, even though it maybe was not something special.

I liked also Harry Potter I,II, III PS2, when I was caught at night by prefects, or Snape, and even more Harry Potter I by Filch, even though it was scary for me back then.

Some of Ace Combat 7's game overs are morbidly amusing.
In the mission "444", allowing the enemy bombers to destroy the base will result in all the inmates cheering while Bandog repeatedly yells for everyone to shut up.

Also in "444", crashing while landing will result in Bandog gloating abut winning the bet he made that you were gonna die.

During "Transfer Orders", shooting down McKinsey's plane at the start of the mission will award you 1000 points, despite resulting in an instant game over.  Additionally, Bandog will say that the mission is a failure, but that the cargo wasn't worth protecting anyway.  It's like the developers knew people were gonna shoot him down.
