Title: Character Showcase 2020: The Year of the Antagonist
Post by: rhombus on December 06, 2019, 02:42:26 PM
Good evening, everyone!

We admins were quite impressed with this year's Character Showcase.  It attracted a lot of discussion and reminiscing about our favorite characters.  For this reason the Character Showcase will be making a triumphant return this year. :yes

We have decided that 2020 will be the year of the LBT antagonist.  From the terrifying Sharptooth, to the ineffectual sharptooth in LBT VI, to the misunderstood (at the time) parents of Chomper in LBT II, they will all be getting a showcase this year.

So without further commentary, here are the rules for the 2020 Character Showcase!
.
.
.
Beginning on January 1, 2020 we will be celebrating our favorite Land Before Time antagonists through the return of the forum's character showcase!  :)littlefoot  Each month one of the major villains or antagonists from the LBT series will be showcased on the forum’s news header, will be featured in our active topic buttons, and will have a special showcase topic dedicated to them.

These showcase topics are not meant to be overly formal matters but rather are supposed to be open for fanworks and discussion about these characters.  That being said there are some basic rules for posting in these topics that will be enforced to keep things moving smoothly:

The characters to be showcased:
Jan: Sharptooth
Feb: Ozzy and Strut
March: Dil and Ichy
April: ME! The great Rhett!
May: Rinkus & Sierra
June: Pterano
July: Domeheads from film 1
August: Chomper's Parents
September: the useless sharptooth from LBT 6
October: Redclaw, Screech, and Thud
November: The Bullies from LBT 3
December: Alternative character interpretation: The Gang

Rules:
1.Within each showcase topic, people can discuss the characters, post fanart of them, or post short fanfics concerning them.

2. To prevent the topic from being overburdened with long posts, any fanfic concerning the featured character should either be limited to less than 1500 words, or, if the story is longer than that, you should host it on a fanfiction hosting site and link it here with a brief description of the story.

3. There will be no set contest for the resulting fanfics and fanart in the showcase topic (this is just for fun), but they can be cross-submitted to the respective prompt challenges if they also qualify for the active monthly prompt for that challenge. For details on those challenges, and to check what the requirements for those are, you can find the fanfic prompt challenge rules here (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=15338.msg474844#msg474844), and the fanart prompt challenge page here (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=15344.msg475785#msg475785). Also, regardless of qualification, the resulting showcase fanfics will be added to the fanfic prompt challenge masterlist as an addendum so that they can be recorded for posterity.

4. The showcase topic will not prevent the discussion of other characters elsewhere in the forum, but the discussion and fanworks in the showcase topic should be limited to the featured character.

5. And, of course, the usual forum rules (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=15698.0) shall apply.

I'm sure everyone will be talking about Ducky, that's for sure... :duckyhappy

And on a side note, I hope next year's Character Showcase incorporates all the slots for the other good secondary characters, since 2019 only went from Feb - Nov. I don't why there wasn't a character showcased for Dec in 2019, but whatever. And yes, I know it was only the first year of Character Showcase.

Don't forget Littlefoot from original movie.

I felt bad for Ducky in the first movie. She was literally the first one chosen by Littlefoot as “live bait” for the Sharptooth, and for some reason Petrie and Spike also looked to her with grinning faces. Of course it had to be the most innocent and adorable one taking up the most dangerous task of all. Yes, it was necessary but pretty mean. :(

So arguably, based from that alone, all of them have a small antagonistic side. :olittlefoot

An admin can correct me if otherwise. But I think the reason for the lack of showcase in December was just because it was a new thing at the time and the first year was sort of a trial run. After November's showcase, I think they just needed a month off to reflect on how it went and to figure out what they were going to do for the next year. I agree there are a lot of good secondary characters, which will give us much to look forward to. :)

I can understand where Littlefoot was coming from. For one thing, it would've been a safer job for Ducky than any of the others, with her being the swimmer of the group. While she understandably isn't thrilled with the suggestion, she does seem to agree to it willingly in the end. That, and coming up with a strategy to get rid of Sharptooth for good was smart in the sense that, otherwise, he probably would've just kept chasing them relentlessly. It was still sort of a questionable move even then, but I can see the reasoning behind the plan.

Lastly, although it isn't stated outright, I got the impression that Littlefoot was anxious to avenge his mother, given how quickly he jumps at the idea of taking down Sharptooth once the opportunity presents itself. Although that in itself would seem to suggest a seldom-seen darker side to our all-loving hero. Hmmm...

I think it just simply comes down to the fact that Littlefoot and Spike were the only ones capable of pushing the rock and therefore already needed to be in position. That would only leave Petrie and Ducky and given the fact that Petrie couldn't fly and Ducky could swim made the choice obvious.

Well that was always my interpretation, at least. But I agree with your reasoning as well.

@StardustSoldier: Yeah, I guess that makes sense.

You present very valid points StardustSoldier. I think what completely threw me off was their cold grins towards Ducky. I’m sure that the swimmer got the implied message, which is why she agreed to be the live bait anyway, but I still felt bad. I felt that she needed support and encouragement rather than all eyes staring at her like a live audience.

I guess that they did everything that they needed to do in order to accomplish their goal, but the treatment should’ve been different.

I think their challenging grins was just meant as a comic relief moment more than anything. But, yeah, I would agree with you there.

Y'all need to keep this discussion for December  :PCera

And yeah - the first character showcase was indeed a trial run and we wanted to use December to consider whether we liked it enough to keep going, and if yes, what to do the following year  :yes

Well if worst comes to worst, we can always just copy our posts into the showcase once December rolls around.

Since first sharptooth survived long fall just like one particular Sharptooth, I wouldn't consider him as totally useless. :)
So, my vote is for second one. :D

Even though both Sharpteeth could technically qualify, I think it's referring to the first Sharptooth specifically, since it had a more prominent overall role in the film, whereas the second only appeared at the very end.

I personally feel like the Rex is the more useless of the two :lol (also it got replaced by another Allo in the TV series)
