General Land Before Time / Re: When should we expect news about LBT 15?
« on: October 31, 2021, 12:35:33 AM »
Same! Would love to see more of Chompers parents. And I haven't watched the TV series but I still think the question of his future in the The Valley is completely unresolved.

You actually have a pretty good point, focus on the other main characters, and you’ll create a good movie (just like the 8th movie).

I think any storyline involving Chomper is going to have a lot of built-in-potential for emotion and conflict. On one hand, Littlefoot practically adopted Chomper and out of the entire gang seemed the most keen to care of him and to think of him as family.

On the other hand, Littlefoot also lost his mother to a Sharp Tooth, and there's gotta be some left over trauma there that I could imagine would make it harder for Littlefoot to deal with the fact that one of his best friends is actually an apex predator. It might make him uncomfortable level, although undoubtly he wouldn't want to show it, or even more likely, he might go into full on denial mode and refuse to reckon with it altogether.

Anyway, there is A LOT of potential there plotwise for a new sequel.
That is MOST CERTAINLY an idea befitting one of those coming-of-age stories.

A perfect kind of theme to end the LBT franchise on, if anything.

Oh yeah exactly! A perfect bittersweet ending to the franchise!
Yeah. I mean, it'd be especially poignant for all those who grew up on this franchise. After all, LBT was treasured by the 90s and 2000s kids.

I don't know if this has been posted before (and I apologize if it was), but someone managed to reconstruct the original Sharptooth attack sequence, earthshake and all, with the cut footage that had since been recovered. Check it out!

General Land Before Time / Re: Hot Springs can Get Frozen Over
« on: October 17, 2021, 04:24:49 PM »
Not sure about hot springs specifically, but I do know that any given body of water that's fairly deep will freeze from the top down, usually with only a relatively thin layer of ice on the surface. So I would think that if a hot spring was gonna freeze, it'd form that same kind of layer. I never really questioned this, even as a kid, because I saw that pattern of freezing on my local lake. Figured it was the same principle in LBT. The surface of the water was cold enough to freeze, but not cold enough to penetrate much further down, thus thin ice.
Hm, that's true. Good insight.

General Land Before Time / Re: Animation Errors
« on: October 17, 2021, 04:23:55 PM »
I've continued to slowly make my way through the VII updated version. I've found quite a few scenes where the sound doesn't quite match up with the animation which is a bit weird. I noticed as well in the scene where Littlefoot talks to his grandparents about Pterano the animation is changed. They use Grandma's animation for the line "Oh my goodness! Here, in the Great Valley?" twice which makes her look like she's saying Grandpa's line in the previous shot... but in the original there was a different shot where it matched up with him talking. As shown below:

https://vimeo.com/632226702
More and more, I have to wonder what in God's name happened with the Stone of Cold Fire HD remaster. How do you mess that up? What was so wrong about the shot of Grandpa talking that it was edited out so that Grandma appears to speak both lines? Did anyone watch this over before it was released?

It's not quite as egregious as taking an asteroid that's specifically said to be blue and turning it entirely yellow, but it just makes me wonder more and more what happened behind the scenes. It didn't seem like most of the other movies got this kind of odd treatment. The big ones that have been edited over time seem to be IV and VII. It's a little baffling.
I haven't watched VII in a long time. I have it on VHS only, and all of the VHS players that I have access to are out of commission, sadly.

Something tells me the production crew was on a tight schedule for those films when it came to the animation phase. You don't leave all of those errors lying around just for the heck of it. If so, it's understandable, considering the sequels were on a yearly schedule. That said, I noticed there was a break in the annual schedule between VI (released in 1998) and VII (released in 2000). That could be another explanation behind the animation quality of the latter.

I've watched all of the movies and somewhere in the range of 5-10 episodes of the TV series.

I hope they're all eventually accessible for everyone to view. No one should have to miss out on fourteen movies' worth of world-building.

Cold enough to only freeze the surface of the water? As much as I liked LBT 8, I thought that didn't really make a lot of sense in hindsight.

General Land Before Time / Re: Least Beautiful Character
« on: October 14, 2021, 12:42:14 AM »
For some reason, I've always thought that Mr. Clubtail's appearance was off-putting in the ugly sense.

Which is appropriate, given what little we know of his character.

I never thought I'd live to see the day where I'd find storyboards for the LBT sequels. As magnificent as the sequels were, I figured that, since they were straight-to-video productions, the crew was a lot more limited and the storyboarding part wasn't as abundant or impressive. Go figure.

General Land Before Time / Re: Most Beautiful Character
« on: October 14, 2021, 12:38:16 AM »
The cutest character would have to be Ducky, without a doubt. Her tiny size, chirpy voice, and upbeat demeanor make her the most adorable.

The character with the most beautiful design would have to be Mo for his bright and unique color scheme, which really stands out compared to the other characters.

General Land Before Time / Re: What if Don Bluth made a sequel?..
« on: October 07, 2021, 12:25:48 AM »
The ending of the original always feels finite to me. Especially the narrator describes that generations will remember all the dinosaurs journey to the great valley.  It makes me have the comforting conclusion that they lived peacefully there. (Until a supposed extinction event) The last shot of them embracing is just too perfect to continue you with for me.
Agreed. Looking at the ending now, I feel like it's Bluth's way of saying, "That's it, show's over. There's nothing more to see her. No sequel, nothing."

Of course, we all know how that turned out, but I guess it was for the better. :)

General Land Before Time / Re: Theme Song
« on: October 07, 2021, 12:17:02 AM »
Yeah, that sounds like it could've been sung by Cera. But the anachronistic terms plague the lyrics, so some rewriting would have to be necessary if they pursue a song just like this.

General Land Before Time / Re: "Wait a minute" in 5th movie
« on: October 07, 2021, 12:15:08 AM »
Seriously though, I guess they use those terms since the audience would understand, instead of finding ways around it, like saying a long time, part of the day instead of hours.    For songs they may need to rewrite songs to leave those terms out, though the end product would be better in my opinion, it would require more work.
Well said. if they can't find simple replacement terms that the audience can follow, then they're just gonna go for broke and use the correct vocabulary. I don't want an entire complicated term to explain a minute in the LBT universe.

A.K.A. they'll keep doing compilations till WE become the land before time.

1988 Theatrical Release / Re: Changes you would have made to the film
« on: September 06, 2021, 11:18:23 PM »
This is a cool idea for a thread! I agree with just about everything OP suggested.

I could probably think of more changes I'd make but here's three that comes to mind:

Rooter

I could probably think of some more later but the one that really comes to mind is Rooter, the friendly Scolosaurus Littlefoot bumps into (literally) after losing his mother. He seems to be a kind and caring dinosaur, yet it doesn't seem to occur to him to help this recently orphaned, starving child?

I know dinosaurs at the time mostly just cared about themselves but even so, it doesn't make much sense to me. It sorta lessens the impact of that scene a little bit.

The fix would be simple. Just make him some semi-aquatic species, and show him swimming off before giving Littlefoot some important advice. That would have indicated to the audience that Rooter couldn't have followed Littlefoot on his journey.

Greedy longnecks

In the scene where the gang discovers a lone cluster of trees, only to see it abruptly depleted by a herd of apatosaurus, I would have changed them to some non-longneck herbivore. Iguanas maybe. I'd also have them crush trees and fight over the remaining treestars. It would make the scene more intense, give the kids a reason to just stay behind as they do and really shows the desperate, dire state of the world.

Plus, if they were longnecks, it introduces the question of why Littlefoot just couldn't go with them. Surely, they'd accept one of their own? Besides, I think the story works better if Littlefoots mother and grandparents are the only longnecks he sees before reaching the valley.

Domeheads => Raptors

I would have also swapped out the domehead Pachycephalosauruses to some raptor species. A. because raptors are cool, and B: it just makes more sense. It'd also have an establishing shot of the raptors hiding behind some rocks or something as the gang reach the tarpits.

The original scriptb]
Just about every deleted scene I've read and heard of from the original script seems like they would have improved the story. Especially Littlefoot finding the valley before going back to tell his friends. It just works better that way.

I actually like the Rooter idea. Not only would it have probably resulted in a fascinating water scene, but it would've made Rooter's role in the film more sense.

1988 Theatrical Release / Re: So, with all the Disney remakes doing well.
« on: September 06, 2021, 11:15:36 PM »
That could work! I gotta tell you though, I always felt this hypercartoony 2D-to-3D approach to character design felt a bit weird.

I'd love it if they did something like non-photorealistic rendering. Like that Disney' short, Paperman.

I think that could really work!
I think so too! It's the perfect compromise between the nostalgic 2D and the more modern 3D!

General Land Before Time / Re: Sierras A Psychopath
« on: September 06, 2021, 11:11:10 PM »
I think Sierra was unusually dark for an LBT villain. If it weren't for Rinkus corralling him, he probably would've done some hardcore stuff not suitable for a G-rated movie.
