General Land Before Time / Re: Most underrated sequels?
« on: June 27, 2021, 03:00:04 AM »
Also, I'm not sure if people usually lump The Big Freeze in with the lesser liked ones, but I always assumed so since I remembered disliking it as a kid. But I rewatched it for the first time not too long ago and it definitely bumped up on the list for me, I can't even remember why I didn't like it now! I also really like Great Day of the Flyers but I don't know the general consensus, I'm way out of the loop on fandom. And I'm biased because I just really like pterosaurs.  :petrieLOL
I do feel like people don't talk enough about The Big Freeze. Its exploration of Ducky and Spike's sibling relationship, and Spike's place in a family of Swimmers, was just so heartwarming and relatable. It's definitely something that adopted kids would latch onto, and the film needs more credit than it's being given right now because of it.

I also like The Great Day of the Flyers because of the subplot with Cera and her new family, which really marked a turning point in the development of two characters (Cera and Topps) whose personalities seemed as if they would be relatively static throughout the franchise. Tria's presence and Tricia's birth really revealed a different side to Topps that I would've never expected pre-LBT 11, and it's refreshing to see Cera try and catch up with all the changes that are suddenly happening around her. Outside of that, I thought the animation and flying sequences were among the best animation stuff to come out of the sequels. I don't know about everyone else, but to me, it felt like the animators put their all into that movie.

General Land Before Time / Re: Score/Rate the sequels

One of these days I'm gonna watch all the movies and rank them. It's been awhile.
You should definitely do it! Leave behind a record for posterity's sake.
Indeed. That's one of the reasons I've enjoyed reviewing the series since I joined the forum. Even as some of my opinions have changed since then, but that's part of why I like having an archive of how I felt at the time.
:cerahappy

Anyway, I'll admit that the first film is the only one I truly love. But for the most part I did enjoy the rest of the series.

- 10/10: The Land Before Time
- 6.5/10: The Great Valley Adventure (Original rating: 6/10)
- 7/10: The Time of the Great Giving
- 7.5/10: Journey Through the Mists (Original rating: 7.25/10)
- 7.5/10: The Mysterious Island (Original rating: 7/10)

- 4/10: Invasion of the Tinysauruses
- 6/10: The Great Day of the Flyers

I also rated each of the TV episodes:

- 6.75/10: Search for the Sky Color Stones
- 7/10: Through the Eyes of a Spiketail
- 6.5/10: The Great Egg Adventure

I feel like some of these might change again over time. And I mentioned before that I think I was being a bit too hard on Journey of the Brave the first time around, but for now that's where it is for me.
I notice your second-highest score is a 7.5. Those are some standards, if I do say so myself.

Would the early/alternate script of LBT VI count in this case?

Most certainly.

I just discovered the night flower exists:

Oh, WOW. :O

I wonder if the writers actually researched a variety of flowers and found this to use as inspiration.

I think that Ozzy and Sierra are psychopaths. Nothing else explains their bizarre and murderous behavior.
Sierra is definitely a sadistic psychopath. As for Ozzy, he isn't as badass as Sierra is so maybe one could say he's showing some psychopathic and violent behavior but he isn't an outright psychopath?
I never got a psychopathic vibe from Ozzy. The writers gave him too much comical traits and contrasted him with a legitimately comic character in Strut for me to really see anything psychopathic in Ozzy.

Sierra, on the other hand, is most certainly a psychopath. He's constantly threatening the children and even relishes in the thought of feeding eggs to Sharpteeth. I also headcanon Rinkus as a sociopath, or more of a low-key psychopath, because he's clearly got a cunning, conniving side behind all that cowardice he shows in front of Pterano.

Honestly, I just thought Wild Arms was just a copy of Guido, although a bit of an improvement in character and personality as Wild Arms was actually somewhat entertaining. Though tbh they both look the same and appear to be or similar species.
Interesting observation. I just remembered the physical similarities too.

General Land Before Time / Re: sequel with darkest story
« on: April 07, 2021, 06:50:46 PM »
I am currenrly rewatching LBTII, and honestly the fact that the gang nearly drowns in the sinking sand is really dark. For one is eatablished that the Great Valley is not a paradiso, that even in the glorious “Promise Land” one’s life can be snuffed out. This frankly is a major shift, the Original film made the Mysterious Beyond a place of purgatory and danger, but the Great Valley as untouched by predators or threats. LBTII undos this illusion, adding eggstealers, sinking sand and eventually sharpteeth in the form of Chomper’s parents. The writers wanted to make it clear the Great Valley isn’t safe, just safer than the Mysterious Beyond.
You know, I wrote a perfectly good post/review on how LBT II was pretty much a deconstruction of the first film and why that process (unintentional or not) helped it stand out as a sequel. It pretty much covers all of what you just wrote at length.

I personally believe the crew was onto something by including the Hyp arc. The film was clearly going for a theme of coexistence and cooperation, but it just couldn't find a way to perfectly intertwine that with the anti-bullying message sent by Hyp and, to a certain extent, Cera's father. I think the problem is that the film wasn't long enough to perfectly express all of that.

Ali’s herd was basically like Life RVers, always on the move. ;)
Pretty much.

Character Discussion / Re: Horned Sharptooth
« on: April 07, 2021, 06:38:43 PM »
Kind of feels odd how they have two non-Dromaeosauridae, carnivorous Theropods in the same movie to be honest. Unless it's a special occasion, there should really just be a single species of larger sized Theropod in the same movie at once.

I think they wanted to up the tension factor by having the Horned and Featherheaded Sharpteeth. However, I’d have preferred just the Horned as the main antagonist.
Honestly, it would've been awesome if the film introduced the Featherheaded Sharpteeth first and made us think they'll be the antagonists. But then, in the same scene, the film throws us a twist by having them be attacked and scared off by the Horned Sharptooth, which establishes its presence as a particularly terrifying Sharptooth and the actual antagonist.

1988 Theatrical Release / Re: Changes you would have made to the film

That Littlefoot’s Treestar that he was given by his mom wasn’t trampled.
Yeah, that part was pretty sad.

Then again, it was likely going to shrivel up and disintegrate in the end because no one would eat it. How would you have made Littlefoot let it go?

Sweet! Can't wait to listen to it when I have the time! :D

1988 Theatrical Release / Re: Changes you would have made to the film
« on: March 17, 2021, 04:01:51 AM »
I honestly would've introduced Chomper and his parents here. For a film that's all about befriending people from all walks of life and working together with them, it seems to make a point of excluding Sharpteeth from that equation. Not only would it have driven the point home that not all Sharpteeth are like the one that killed Littlefoot's mother, but it would've been a more natural way for Littlefoot to realize that point as well, move on from his mother's death, and realize that family is important, no matter what the species.

I don't know if this was discussed already, but did anyone else think Ali's herd was a cult?

it's been awhile since I saw the fourth movie, but I remember getting some strange vibes from the Old One

and the way they moved about from place to place and implied the possibility of the Great Valley falling just kind of sent me messages like "the end the near!"

idk, I just remeber getting some doomsday vibes from them, that's all..

what do you guys think?
I've honestly never thought of it that way. From what I remember, Ali's herd used to settle in the Land of Mists, but when the mists took over and brought all kinds of danger, that was when they started to migrate. I think they just had a bad first impression of settling in one place, believing that staying in one place for too long was bound to render them vulnerable to all kinds of threats sooner or later.

Character Discussion / Re: Cera
« on: March 17, 2021, 03:55:21 AM »
I'd say that while some of Cera's characteristics are left with a lot to be desired, her place in the Gang is unquestionable. She serves as the perfect foil to Littlefoot, someone whose aggressive and no-nonsense behavior is as much of an inspiration as Littlefoot's compassion and kindheartedness. After all, compassion can only get someone so far. Cera knows BS when she sees it, and she's therefore always the first one to be judgmental, even if it's not for her own good.

Oh, God. I don't think I'll make it to 10, because there's not a lot of characters that I hate in LBT. Maybe there are characters that I just go "Eh" at, but never any downright hate. That's how good the characterization is.

1) The Yellowbellies. 'Nuff said.

2) Rhett. How dare he try to steal Ali away from her beloved Littlefoot! *shields OTP protectively* The only value I see in him is his potential as an antagonist in Littlefoot's future as an adult.

3) The Tinysauruses. Don't get me wrong, I like the ones that we got to know individually, but as a whole... In hindsight, I realize the movie they debuted in was the start of the flanderization of LBT. At the time, I never saw kid-friendlier characters than them...that is, until the Yellowbellies. Them being super-tiny Longnecks felt like such an unneeded gimmick.

Told you guys I couldn't make it to 10. Heck, I couldn't even break the 5 mark!

My list is the same. Save for Rhett, he has grown on me.
Hmmm, interesting. What made you change your mind?

General Land Before Time / Re: Journey of the Brave five years later
« on: March 17, 2021, 03:44:34 AM »
Journey of the Brave suffers from the Wisdom of Friends dialouge (infantile) but it was considerably better in terms of adventure. I am sad Chomper and Ruby were pretty much worthless. They’re arch was futile.
But technically isn't most of the dialogue in the sequels infantile? I am not saying your wrong but I am pointing out that's not a thing limited to XIII and this one.
I feel like the dialogue after LBT X was like that, to be perfectly honest.

Not sure if this counts as "animation", but my favorite error of all time will forever be Icky's binoculars
Icky's binoculars.

Yeah, look at the original cover of LBT 4. Icky's holding a modern-day pair of binocs. That's canon, and I don't mean the brand.
I guess that's why we have a new cover for LBT IV. They caught on to the error.

Littlefoot and Cera are the characters I've identified with the most. Even though they contrast from each other in many ways, I have both a mellow and a fiery edge to me. :p Probably not a coincidence then that Littlefoot is my forum avatar and Cera is my Discord avatar. :p
And, fittingly enough, I took five different online LBT quizzes a while back where it tells you which character you are based on the questions that you answer. Of the quizzes I took, I got two Littlefoots, two Ceras, and... Ruby. Interesting.
Links to those quizzes? I'd like to take a gander at them.
