Title: Other Random Artwork
Post by: Flathead770 on August 16, 2017, 01:21:25 AM
I'm not sure how often I'll be posting in this topic but I figured I'll make it now since my next drawing I'm working on is not LBT related.

I'll start with one some of you may have seen already.

It's a Battlecruiser from Starcraft that I first revealed on August 8th for Sovereign's birthday.

I wanted to see how I would fair drawing a really complex object with a lot of detail. There are a few points in which I left an area blank compared to the concept art that I was basing this off of (like the narrow part leading up to the front) as well as a few artistic liberties.

If you look closely at the picture there are some geometrical errors but the amount that's going on in the picture helps distract from them, at least in my opinion.

It was really fun to work on with it being so different from any LBT art that I've done.

Thank you again for making this amazing picture for my birthday!  :) It is drawn really smoothly and the lines look good and sharp. Also, the shading is one of the best ones I've seen from you! To be honest, I don't see any major geometrical errors so they're probably not that serious. This picture is truly impressive and it's probably the one of your smoothest drawn pictures. Great job here!  :yes

You are one awesome artist! Like Sovereign said, this is one of the best art pieces you ever made! The ship looks awesomely drawn, the shading is perfect, and the details are spot-on! I love this awesome art piece! Instead, let's call it masterpiece! Awesome job with this!

Thank you and your very welcome! I wasn't sure what I was going to draw at first but your avatar gave me the idea for the challenge. Your birthday wasn't too far off at the time either so I decided on making it a surprise.

I did put a lot more effort into shading this time around, using different amounts of shading depending on how exposed each spot is. I think I could have put some more work into it still but I'm satisfied with how it looks.

The geometrical errors probably stand out to me more since I was the one drawing them as well as staring at them for hours. One example is near where the skinny portion connects with the main body and wings. The line isn't parallel to the other lines that are further down.

Oh man. The praise... it's too much to handle. Thank you! :DD

----

As complicated as this drawing is, all it really comes down to is adding and shaving rectangles, triangles, and cylinders, all of which are fairly easy to draw on their own. If you guys are interested I did a quick example of how I started this drawing. Maybe it might help someone down the road with planning their own drawings.

First I just started with a long rectangle. I then drew a line on the top part roughly half way and 'cut down' into the rectangle. This will be the basic shape of ship's hull.

For the next part I first erased my unused lines. Next I drew 3 strips in the front part that are going to be indented. For the back section I added in lines (dotted in this case for clarity) to show parts of the rectangle behind the obstructed view. This will help for extending the wings.

Now the wings are extended out as rectangles. I marked a line down the middle of each wing to show where it is going to narrow. For the 3 strips I erase the edges of them and drew the rectangle slightly smaller inside of them to give that indented look. I also drew lines on either side of the top corners of the ship. This is to essentially cut off the edges to give the rectangle a slightly rounded look (the center line just needs to be erased, shown in the next image).

Finally I just erased the sections of the wing to get this result. From here I just followed the same idea expanding out the ship to the desired shape then filling in all of the smaller details.

Time for an update.

Optimus Prime first posted for CybertronianBrony's birthday on August 25.

First off I would like to mention that I'm happy that you enjoyed the picture CybertronianBrony. I mentioned before that I didn't have time to color it in as that was my original intention. I was going to use this as a way to practice color shading but I'm still not fully comfortable with it yet so instead I just did regular old shading. Here is the finished product:

I bought a couple of drawing pencils to see how they would work for shading compared to mechanical pencils (which I've read are not very good). I think they worked quite well, especially on the tires. Some of the lighter shading doesn't show up too well (around the bumper for example). With this finished I'll more than likely go back to doing some more LBT art.

Once again, a very solid picture!  :) The lines themselves look really nice and I like the details you've put into this, for example that symbol on his arm! The anatomy works mostly but does the right leg (in the picture) look a bit twisted? Anyway, that's only one more of my nitpicks. Great job again with this one!  :yes

Thanks Sovereign. Yea the legs were a big issue for me in general. I kept drawing them too small. I still think they're too small now but I didn't have too much room left on the page. The leg on the right also isn't as long as the other leg. I think that the twisted appearance comes from the fact that the upper part of the leg has a bit of an isometric look while the lower part is more of a straight on front look. If I stare at the knee area I can notice the twisting the most. Thanks for pointing that out.

I'm happy the Autobot symbol on his arm turned out alright. Drawing all those cards helped condition me for drawing small images. At least I like to think so anyways.

I freakin' love your Optimus art piece! And you even gave it shading! Which makes it even more awesome! Another masterpiece you made!

You win everything. Someone give this amazing guy a medal.

I apologize, but I'm just speechless... Your art is getting more and more better! In fact, they are the best! The best of the best!

Once again, thanks for that awesome present! You are the best!

You say that you're speechless but I feel like I'm the one who always doesn't know how to respond to you :lol
Btw I love the song "The Touch" and I laughed pretty good at the reference on your birthday topic. I was trying to think of another line from the movie but I think you took the best ones already.

I love your enthusiasm. It always puts a smile on my face :smile

So for those who are not on Discord, a couple of days ago we started talking about Dinoteen and his recent wiki antics emphasizing the need for larger and adult dinosaurs and a war with sharpteeth in order to satisfy the mature LBT fans. I don't quite know how it happened but from joking about making the show more mature we got to We're Back with guns and, well this happened:

Overall it was done in about 30 - 60 minutes and was mostly referenced off the first picture I got off Google. You might not notice, but there's very subtle changes to Rex for my pitch for We're Back 2 to keep the mature audience engaged with the series. :p

It's nice to see visually what DinoTeen wants. :lol The concept is rather funny and the clear exaggeration of "mature themes" works quite well here. It's also nice that you used that film as the basis for this idea as this premise fits that movie better than LBT overall. :p

I'm glad you guys liked it! It was quite a blast drawing it. I had a toss up between having an eye-patch or sunglasses. The sunglasses are cooler but the eye-patch is obviously way more mature, plus a little easier to draw. Also, this was my source of inspiration:

Yep! That movie is already off the rails so it's not quite as big of a jump relatively speaking.

Nicely done. I especially love the drawing of the Battlecruiser, as I used to play StarCraft. Likewise, Rex being all hardcore made me laugh.

@Flathead770 I think you've got a secret admirer, Stardust has been bumping a lot of your threads lately  :bestsharptooth

In all seriousness though, that's some good effort there, I used to be like that in my early years myself.  :)littlefoot
