Title: Comic, Story or something different?
Post by: Sky on April 14, 2008, 08:51:08 AM
Don't know if it goes here.

As you may noticed, I haven't put any artworks on lately.
It's because I'm currently working on another project but I don't know how to "show" it. =/

I was thinking of a comic, but then it would be too much work (even more because I have the LBT comic running).
Just writing a story wouldn't do it either as I actually want to draw something. Hmm...

I could try the "Childrens Book" way. You know, a big picture and some text under it.
But there may be any other possibilities and before I actually start the project, you guys might know something.  :^.^:

You mean that you would like to draw scenes from that story, but not an image for every exchange of words etc.?
I guess there are several different possibilities which you might want to consider, depending on the ratio between text and picture. One possibility has been suggested elsewhere already, namely a comic, but in Prince Valiant (Prinz Eisenherz) style, that is images, but short accompanying text rather than text bubbles. That way entire dialogues can be fitted into one image (if necessary) where a text bubble comic would require multiple pictures.
Another alternative would be something like you mentioned, the "Children's Book way" (a term that refers to the style only, not to the content I suppose) where you could just add the text to an image and where there doesn't necessarily have to be at least an image per scene (which I guess would be more of a requirement in the Prince Valiant style comic).
Maybe you could also try something new; a mixture between comic and book. There could be long passages of text about scenes which you don't fancy to draw, but they could fill the gaps between those scenes which you would really like to draw. I haven't seen something like that before, so I can't say anything about how it would work out. But this doesn't necessarily mean it would work out bad.

Hmm...maybe I should take a look at the Prince Valiant possibility.
I haven't seen or read it, though. *searches in google*

I think the cross between book and comic would be interesting, as I've only ever seen it done once before (and quite well).

I have read quite a few Prince Valiant comics which I borrowed from a local library. If you have an MSN identity Sky I could send you some good samples of what it looks like and how they arange pictures and text.

You should look at both the more typical comic book style and Prince Valiant and give yourself time to decide which you prefer.

So, I have seen some Prince Vailant scans from google.
It's actually a comic but with small text instead of speechbubbles.
And that's the problem. I love to draw, but not that much. I would have to draw many pictures on a single page but the story would go very slow. -_-
What I thought is to draw somewhat 2-3 panels and then the text on the bottom (like the childrens book only just more pictures instead of one). *looks for more books*

And thanks guys for helping me out.  :D

Comic books are a different breed from what you've been attempting.  They often don't focus on the detail nearly as much as an 8x10 of one particular shot in time.  It will take some adjustment.  Good luck. :)

That's, I think, why the Prince Valiant way might work out. While in a traditional style comic a relatively short dialogue between two or three characters might cover half a page (or more) with basically similar pictures (varying angles and facial expressions of course) such a dialogue can be easily fitted into a single image of a Prince Valiant style comic, though often (not always) at the expense of direct speech.

You'll have to maybe try a few different things out to get what your most comfortable style is.  Each type likely has some advantages over others.
