Gamers Zone / Portal
« on: April 30, 2008, 09:11:57 PM »
A game that has quite possibly the most interesting gameplay ever.  Portal is a first person shooter, with a twist.  You don't kill people, and it's more like a puzzle game than anything.  It was released as one of the 5 games that come in the Orange Box which was released last fall, and was released as a stand-alone game just a month ago.

For those who don't know, Portal is a puzzle game where you play as the test subject in a lab who has to complete many obstacles that slightly increase in difficulty after each level.  You are given this really awesome portal gun that shoots two portals that are linked together.  So if you shoot a portal at the wall in front of you and shoot a portal at the wall above a platform two stories up, you can walk through the portal you shot on the ground floor wall and step onto the high platform.  I can't really explain it in any other way.  But this teaser trailer pretty much explains it all.

Gamers Zone / Gamer Quiz
« on: April 12, 2008, 01:55:54 AM »
This just came into my head.  Not very original.  But meh...

How many video game consoles do you have?
11

Which consoles?
-Atari 2600
-Nintendo Entertainment System
-Sega Genesis
-Super Nintendo Entertainment System
-Sega Saturn
-Sony Playstation
-Nintendo 64
-Sega Dreamcast
-Game Boy Advance
-Nintendo DS Lite
-Nintendo Wii

What's the total number of games you own?
76

What games?

Atari 2600: Space Invaders, Missile Command, Football, Air Sea Battle, Asteroids, Combat, Skiing, Berzerk, Yars' Revenge, Baseball, Basketball, Haunted House(yes, the one AVGN reviewed), Donkey Kong(Pre-NES), Pac Man(terrible port, but hard to find), ET: The Extraterrestrial(The official worst game on the planet. As much as I'd love to smash the cartridge with a hammer, I can't. It's extremely hard to find since at least 70% of them were returned or never bought and burried in a New Mexico landfill somewhere).

NES: Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, Super Mario Bros 3(barely used and in peak condition, complete with instruction book), The Legend of Zelda gold cartridge, Metroid, Megaman 2, Super C, Galaga, and Ninja Gaiden.

Sega Genesis: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2(complete with box and instruction booklet), Sonic 3, Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition.

SNES: Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Starfox, Super Scope 6(raising enough money to buy a Super Scope off eBay so I can play it), Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Killer Instinct, Megaman X, Lethal Enforcers.

Sega Saturn: Solar Eclipse

Sony Playstation: Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Solid

Nintendo 64: Mario 64, Goldeneye, Smash Bros, Starfox 64, Mario Tennis, Pokemon Stadium, Pokemon Stadium 2.

Sega Dreamcast: Jet Grind Radio

Game Boy/Advance: Pokemon Yellow, Red, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, and Sapphire, Doom, and Game and Watch Gallery 4.

Nintendo DS: Pokemon Pearl, Contra 4, New Super Mario Bros, Metroid Prime Hunters, Starfox command, Brain Age.

Nintendo Wii: Metroid Prime, Mario Kart Double Dash(Both Gamecube), Smash Bros Brawl, Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Wii Sports, Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree, WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Excite Truck, Pokemon Battle Revolution, DDR.

What gaming peripherals do you have?

-Nintendo Zapper
-NES Advantage(barely works, unfortunately)
-Super Game Boy
-N64 Rumble Pak
-N64 Game Boy Transfer Pak
-Wii Classic Controller
(I don't really count the Wii remote and nunchuck as a peripheral, since they're supposed to be the root controller of the system)

What items in your collection are your most prized?
The SNES, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World, the NES, Legend of Zelda gold, Mario Bros. 3.

What do you consider your greatest gaming achievments?
Beating Super Metroid for the very first time, and beating Contra 4. Also training up my typhlosion to level 95 in Pokemon Gold with no use of rare candy whatsoever before calling it quits waaaaay back in the 5th grade. Also getting my mom to acquiesce to letting me get a TV for my room so I could get that mess of cords out of the living room. lol

Okay...  Now lets see YOU take this quiz.  XD

Computer and Electronics / Good Free DVD burners?
« on: March 29, 2008, 03:01:55 PM »
I'm sure some of the tech-heads here might be able to help me.  Ever since my computer screwed out on me Sonic has been riddled with error messages, even when I tried reinstalling it.  And every free DVD burner I've tried burns DVDs, but they don't work on my DVD player.  If someone knows about a reliable free DVD burner for those who don't want to shell out the bucks for one at the store can you please tell me?  I'd greatly apprecciate it.

Gamers Zone / Street Fighter
« on: March 23, 2008, 01:55:45 AM »
SHORYUKEN!  *POW!*  Talk about what might possibly be the best fighting series ever here.  Street Fighter was Capcom's staple franchise of the early 90s.  Yes, Street Fighter 2 received update after update, but I consider Street Fighter 2 turbo to be the best version of it.  My favorite character is Ryu, and I've practically mastered him.  I love the Hadouken and Tatsu Maki Sen Puu Kyaku(Fire ball and Hurricane Kick to all those n00bs out there)

I recently picked this game up on eBay for my Dreamcast, which has been collecting dust in my closet for over a year. And I tell ya, they weren't lying when they said this was one of the best games on the Dreamcast. This game is FUN! But sadly, it was overlooked when it came out in 2000. No thanks to those casual soft-core PS2 fanboys. Shame on them...

It was a very revolutionary game for its time. Being one of the very first games to use cel-shading, it made you feel as if you were playing in what looked like a 3D anime. The game is about a gang of rollerblading skate punks in the city of "Tokyo-To" and you can pick out your favorite character to play as and you go around covering up rival gangs' graffiti while avoiding Tokyo-To's police chief, Onishima, who is hell-bent on taking you out, even if it means calling in the whole army. lol You can even make your own graffiti design with english or Japanese letters.  :p

Gamers Zone / Duke Nukem(all)
« on: January 08, 2008, 12:18:03 AM »
"I'm Duke Nukem!  And I'm coming to get the rest of you alien bastards!"  That's just one of the sayings cranked out from the king of silly one-liners.  xD  Any person that was a gamer during the 90s knew who Duke Nukem was.  He was buff, he always wears sunglasses, he's armed to the teeth.  And he's a badass.  :p  Duke Nukem 3D is where Duke became extremely popular, and was a first person shooter that was just like any first person shooter of that day.  You go around shooting aliens and mutant pig cops and try to save the world from invaders.  Not much of a story with Duke.  The main thing that grabs people is the action and ridiculously funny one-liners.  :lol  Now if 3D Realms could just finish Duke Nukem Forever...  -_-

Gamers Zone / Contra(all)
« on: December 27, 2007, 10:42:10 AM »
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Left, Right, Right, B, A, Start! That's the code you'll be using in the original Contra for the NES to get 30 lives if you aren't manly enough to get through it on only 3. Yes, Contra is the hardest game out there and is the type of game that normal modern gamers might not be able to complete in their first, second, or even third sitting, and would have them throwing the controller in utter rage. There's also Super C(NES) and Contra III(SNES). Recent 3D Contra sequels on the Playstation failed miserably. And thankfully, they just came out with Contra 4 for the DS which brings the old school Contra gameplay back in all its 2D glory.  There is only one rule you have to abide too if you want to beat any of the old school Contra games:  DON'T GET SHOT!

Computer and Electronics / MSN help
« on: December 05, 2007, 11:36:58 PM »
I'm having some trouble signing onto MSN.  Even when my connection is working just fine it doesn't seem to want to connect.  o_O  When looked for help at the Windows Messenger website it said something about a firewall and adding the program to my allow list.  I shut off AVG, when to the security section of my control panel and shut that off too and it STILL didn't work.  I NEED HELP!  I can sign onto MSN through my sister's computer, I can use the crappy Web Messenger, but I can't use the fricken Windows Live messenger!

Sound Off! / Red Monday
« on: December 03, 2007, 07:19:45 PM »
Anybody into audio stories?  This is a pretty interesting one.  It just started and it's a five part mini series.  Each episode will be released every Monday until Christmas Eve.  It's pretty interesting if you're in to this sort of thing.  The only catch is that you have to subscribe for five dollars or download each episode for $1.67 and THAT SUCKS!!  Why couldn't they have put it up as a free podcast on iTunes?  Oh well, at least the first episode is free.  It's about a nuclear bomb that goes off in LA.  And I happen to be the type that's in to near-future-apocalypse stuff.   http://redmonday.com/

Gamers Zone / Donkey Kong(all)
« on: November 08, 2007, 06:26:11 PM »
Who could forget the Nintendo character that was made way back when Mario was called Jump Man?   My favorite DK game would probably have to be Donkey Kong Country.  I remember playing that game so much as a little kid while I was at the daycare.  :p  And DKC is #2 on my top 3 things I REALLY want for Christmas.  lol

Gamers Zone / Atari(all)
« on: November 07, 2007, 12:22:20 AM »
Though it may be a third party software developer now, Atari was pretty good in it's earlier days when it dominated the market with Pong and the 2600(which happens to be #1 on my Christmas list this year).  Though, ironically, Atari nearly destroyed the video game industry as well as creating it. *cough*ET*cough*  And its newer consoles (everything AFTER the 2600.  Such as the 5200, 7800 and final system, Jaguar) were horrendously flawed (broken controllers, faulty processors, etc). lol  Beside that, the Atari 2600 defines the word classic and is the holy grail of any console geek's collection.

Silver Screen / Spaceballs
« on: November 03, 2007, 11:57:24 PM »
Quite possibly the best Star Wars parody in existence?  I think so.  :lol   But some of you serious people may think of it as stupid and pointless.  Well here's the news for you IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO MAKE SENSE AT ALL!  That's the whole point of it!  Now that I have that out of the way I'll just say my favorite quote in that movie is when Dark Helmet says "I knew it, I'm surrounded by assholes!"  That gets me every time.   :lol  And I just can't get enough of when Space Ball 1 goes to Ludicrous speed and when it comes to a complete stop, Helmet flies forward and slams into the computer terminal. :lol

Silver Screen / Favorite Horror Flicks?
« on: November 02, 2007, 09:51:18 PM »
I mainly prefer the pointless teen slasher movies.  I don't know why, but I seem to be drawn to them. :lol But that doesn't mean I like other types of horror movies with gallons of blood splattering all over the place.  lol

-Halloween(1978) I like the first Halloween, the second one and the recent Rob Zombie remake.

-Friday the 13th(1980) I only like 1, 2 and 3.

-Nightmare on Elm Street(1984) Only seen the first, heard the rest sucked.

-Scream(1996)

-Slither(2006)

-The Blob(1988)

-Final Destination(2000)

-Saw(2004)

-The Hills Have Eyes(2006)

-The Ring(2003)

-The Grudge(2004)

-Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Land of the Dead(1968, 1979 and 2005)

Oh who can forget that game where you create little digital people that speak nothing but gibberish?   I got The Sims 2 about 3 years ago and lost the disk when I moved, and I just got a new copy today!  This time I'm going to learn how to mod and see if I can make my own clothes and other fun stuff.  :lol

Silver Screen / Astro Boy
« on: October 15, 2007, 02:02:12 PM »
Every anime fan will more than likely know about this show.  Or else they probably wouldn't be considered anime fans at all. :p  Without Astro Boy anime probably wouldn't have gained popularity in western culture at all.  My favorite versions of Astro Boy would be the original series from the 1960s and the newest remake from 2003.  God I would kill for the original Mighty Atom manga that came out in 1952.

The Fridge / OWWWWW!!!!
« on: October 09, 2007, 10:00:02 PM »
Last Friday I woke up with this huge lump in my throat.  Then last Sunday a bunch of white spots appeared on my tonsils so I went to the doctor and they assumed I had strep throat.  But then yesterday it got progressively worse where the white blotches turned into giant canker sores.   So I went back to the doctor and he said that I had a viral infection that causes ulcers to form on my tonsils and throat cavity.  I can't even swallow my own spit without feeling intense, burning/stinging pain!  He said the infection was caused by stress and was most commonly found in teenagers because of High School.   :bang  :bang  So now I'm stuck at home all week being unable to eat anything at all and being unable to drink water without the special oral gel my doctor prescribed.  I have never been in so much pain in my whole life! :bang  :bang  :bang

Silver Screen / Goosebumps/Are You Afraid of the Dark?
« on: October 06, 2007, 12:22:44 AM »
Why can't they make shows like they used to?  Are you Afraid of the Dark? was a really great kids horror show with that typical silliness the 90s is known for. :p  And Goosebumps based off the series of books by RL Stine of the same name didn't really follow the books exactly and the books were better.  But was still a good show.  Thank god for Veoh.com where I can download episodes for free.  :DD

Gamers Zone / Halo(all)
« on: September 25, 2007, 06:49:16 PM »
As we all know.  Halo 3 came out today.  The Halo series is pretty much the only reason why people buy and Xbox or a top-of-the-line PC because the graphics are so great and the gameplay is decent and great online multiplayer (not counting the first Halo for the Xbox).  I have only played through the single player levels of Halo for the PC and I haven't done other than multiplayer on Halo 2.  Halo 2 for the PC is only compatible on the crappy OS known as Windows Vista and they say there's a program you can get somewhere that allows you to play Halo 2 on XP.  But I still have yet to find that program and download the Halo 2 PC torrent.

With this being a game forum, I'm surprised someone hasn't started a thread on the great bambino of video games.  Seriously, who HASN'T played a Mario game?  Anybody who doesn't know the history of the Mario Brothers can NOT be classified as a gamer.  I have 4 Mario games.  The first Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 and New Super Mario Bros.

I finally got a hold of a really great editing program called Sony Vegas and after a two month Hiatus I can start making movies with my friends again!  Right now I the only videos I'm working on are experimental ones, just so I can get used to the software tools a bit.  Here's one vid I made with the layering tools using some gif animations I got off the internet:  http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4373126091770355303
