LBT Fanfiction / What do you hate to find in fan fiction?
« on: April 15, 2017, 01:39:33 AM »
Slash really grinds my gears. Not because of the homosexual aspect of it, but because it's usually out of character and it makes no sense.

For example, I read a story about Severus Snape teaching Harry Potter the dark arts and found it intriguing. Got impatient and skipped to the end and I found myself reading about how Snape and Harry were in bed together totally in love. And it was just freakin weird.

Anything like that is weird. Whether it be Harry and Malfoy, Sirius and Remus, etc, etc.

I once even saw a story about Shorty and Littlefoot as a couple and it made me want to vomit. They're brothers for Christ's sake!

Okay, people. So adding in all the necessary bolding, italicizing and whatnot takes a really fuckin long time haha. So from this point forward, I'm just going to post the remaining chapters from a link on fanfiction.

Anyway, here's chapter 1 after the prologue Enjoy!

Excellent short story, really enjoyed this one.

It gives an insightful picture into the lives of sharpteeth, their family units and goes beyond the point of view we normally get in the series when they are usually shown as bloodthirsty monsters.

Lastly, this ties in beautifully to the start of the fourth movie and even features Dil losing a portion of her eyesight.

Great fic man. Look forward to more.

What's up, GOF people?

I'll get straight to the point. Some of you have probably heard that Rhombus and I have been working on a collaboration project. This long rumored story that has been in the works since last Fall is now ready for publishing. We are both very excited about this, and hope you all will enjoy.

I present to you

A Wish Granted: Tears of a Sharptooth

Prologue

A torrent of verdant leaves exploded from the bushes as the longneck propelled himself through the foreboding darkness of the Wetlands. In his headlong advance he did not notice anything except for the promise of the open expanse beyond. An escape from the unseen danger. An escape from what haunted his nightmares.

An escape from certain death.

His legs burned with exertion as every blade of grass and even the ground itself seemed intent on slowing his progress. In his fear-addled mind he had no idea how long he had been running, whether it had been minutes or hours. The only thing that he knew was that he had to gain distance on the green menace that stalked him.

He never saw the hole that made him lose his balance.

In a cascade of movement the small longneck appeared to buckle and fall into the muddy abyss of the stream. His brown skin being coated with the thick muck of the sinking mud. It took all that he had in him to keep his head above the depths.

A rather large Utahraptor emerged from the brush and sniffed. The little longneck was close by, he knew that much. In the growing darkness, his eyesight would prove to be an advantage. Leaf eaters were not the most adept to their surroundings in the night time hours. Slowly moving forward, his ears picked up a sound: the sound of struggling.

He edged himself towards the river, he needed to be careful, not because the longneck posed a threat but because he himself did not want to be caught in whatever the youngling was currently trapped in. The Utahraptor approached the edge of a muddy stream and using his senses, managed to discern where his target was. The little longneck was caught in a bog that threatened to engulf him.

No way out now, kid.

As if he had heard the fastbiter's thoughts, the longneck appeared to roll in the water and proceeded to float towards the other side, still managing to keep his head above the sticky sludge. It was as if the youngling was daring the predator to follow.

The green fast biter smirked at this gesture.

Oh I don't think so.

He was large for his kind, and that proved to be crucial here. Using his mighty forelegs, he jumped across the stream, maintaining his balance and landing perfectly on the other side right in front of the young longneck.

"Ahhhh!"

The green fastbiter only watched with mild amusement as his target struggled to free himself from the muck that significantly impaired his mobility.

Then again, what mobility? Longnecks barely have any as it is

The small creature managed to lift himself onto the bank and try to run, only for him to fall flat on his face and right in front of the fastbiter, who peered down at him in with a mixture of curiosity and bemusement.

"Dad! Dad, help!"

The longneck coughed after attempting to yell. The gunk from the bog made him gag, and the sludge on his face made it difficult to see. But even with those limitations it was obvious that the youngling knew his likely fate. There was no one to save him now.

"Oh daddy isn't coming. At least, not yet," the Utahraptor said with a grin.

"You…" The longneck coughed again, "You can speak?!"

The fastbiter chuckled, displaying his sharp pointed claws on the end of his feet.

"How droll. But of course I can speak, young one. How else would I be able to convey what I am about to tell you?"

He gazed up at the heavens, stars starting to twinkle within the last light of the twilight.

"Shame about the others. They won't be here to witness such a glorious occasion. But no matter. I can always start with you. In fact, I think it would be fitting."

The longneck cowered assuming that he was about to be eaten. His eyes conveyed only mindless fear.

The green fast biter observed the smaller dinosaur. A dinosaur he once normally considered just an appetizer to a far bigger meal. How his perspective had changed since then. Much had evolved as the years had gone by. Longnecks were always strong creatures, but even a hatchling would not be able to muster much courage in the face of a fully grown sharptooth. Even as he looked down upon this morsel, he felt a twinge of sympathy. After all he knew the plight of leaf eaters better than most of his species. Something that a couple of mysterious rainbow faces had seen to long ago.

The young longneck's trembling became more subdued as recognition again registered in his eyes. The fear-numbness had finally abated. Now only confusion remained. Confusion and more than a bit of curiosity.

Ha! Reminds me of a certain longneck from a long time ago…

"Good, it seems you've managed to control your fear. We sharpteeth can practically smell it...moving on. If you think a sharptooth talking leaf eater is odd then let me tell you a tale. A story that happened many years past…"

"A story?" The longneck was not processing what he was hearing.

Another laugh emanated from the sharptooth.

"You remind me a lot of myself back in the past, kid," he said with a slightly unnerving toothy grin. "Unsure...running away from what you should do...So how about I tell you how I overcame that? After all if you want to become better at avoiding becoming dinner then perhaps you should listen to…"

Don't give too much away. Not just yet.

"Anyway, shall we begin?"

The longneck looked unsure, as the mud began to dry on his skin. But eventually his curiosity overpowered his fear and he gave a weak nod. It wasn't like he had much of a choice.

Clearing his throat, the sharptooth started to speak in a dry tone.

"It all began many cold times ago…"

Sup everyone! I should've updated this on here awhile ago, but I got caught up with a bunch of stuff. Anyway, though 11 chapters are up on fanfiction, I still want to see people's reactions' on here. So feel free to leave a comment or review! It's much appreciated. Anyway, here is the 4th chapter.

Chapter 4. Many Lessons

Grandpa and Grandma Longneck had always done their best.

They had raised their grandson after the death of their daughter and the absence of Bron. They had tried to keep the herd together when the big earthshake struck the land, keep order in the Great Valley when misfortune struck and ward off any threats from sharpteeth. They weren’t perfect, this much was clear to them, but there was much to be thankful for. With the right amount of preparation, kindness and leadership, any problem that had come their way had been solved in due time.

But no amount preparation or knowledge could equip them to handle the most difficult challenge imaginable: a teenage dinosaur.

Could they manage, now not as young as they once were, to guide another teenager to adulthood?

“I suspect you’re thinking about the same thing as I am” the wise male said to his wife while he munched on leaves.

His wife, eating on the tree next to his appeared unsure as he had ever seen her.

“I am, then again you’ve always been good at that.”

“As you are with me. There’s a reason why we chose each other my dear.”

“Yes” she said smiling at him. The old longneck did always have his charming side.

“And soon it will be time for Littlefoot to do the same. He will find his partner, the girl of his dreams.”

Grandma Longneck swallowed her green food.

“It is such a feeling, to know your grandson is reaching adulthood,” she said aloud. “But the experience differs as grandparents to a boy than being the parents of a girl.”

“My dear we did fine with Adeline, we can do the same with Littlefoot. In fact, we need not be so cautious with him as we were with our daughter. The only thing we need to worry about is whether or not he becomes a father too early…”

“Grandpa Longneck do behave” she chastised.

Chuckling slightly, he replied, “Of course my apologies. But we must try not to worry too much. He has always had a good head on his shoulders. He will come out of this perfectly fine.”

Looking at him seriously, grandma longneck had a glare that could pierce anyone, even if it was not out of anger.

“At the same time we must be realistic. Littlefoot is about to go through some serious changes in his life that are not easy to deal with when one is so young. As you and I both know, mental maturity comes after physical maturity.”

“I know grandma; we were both young once.”

“But of course you realize that he is no ordinary longneck. We know this, Bron knows this, and I’m quite sure Adaline knew it even if she never got the chance to say it openly.”

A small tear appeared in her eye at the mention of her late daughter. She wiped the tear on a tree star, but not before her husband noticed.

“My dear, please. It hurts me to see you like this. We both weep eternally for what happened that day. But it is the future that we must look to. Our grandson. As you said, Littlefoot is destined for great things.”

“Yes, and we must ensure that outcome. Whether he joins his father or starts his own herd here in the Great Valley, it is imperative for the good of our species. That day is coming soon.”

The elderly male looked at his wife thoughtfully.

“Be patient my dear. We must not rush Littlefoot into anything before he is ready. When the opportunity arises, he will have plenty of chances to meet female longnecks of our kind.”

Grandma Longneck smiled at this.

“Yes you are right. The thought of the day he gets married warms my heart.”

“As it does mine. And we will do all we can to see him through these years.”

Grandpa looked west towards another faraway patch of trees.

“In the meantime, we must place our trust in Mr. Thicknose to educate our growing children properly about the Time of the Great Change.”
______________________________________________________________________________
Unfortunately, that was not the scenario Grandpa Longneck envisioned.

Mr. Thicknose, still the formal instructor of the Great Valley, was struggling to keep the teenage dinosaurs focused. Littlefoot flicking pinecones at Cera with his trail, Petri was practicing his dive bombing, and Ducky was riding on top of Spike cheering on the flyer’s impressive feats.

“Alright, alright settle down young….”

Mr. Thicknose stopped. He was about to say the words “young ones” but that didn’t seem to be quite accurate anymore. The children he had once taught were now almost as big as he was and still growing. True they were still juveniles but he could no longer consider or treat them like mere hatchlings.

“Ehh, I mean settle down everyone,”

I guess that term will do, he thought. In any case, it was enough to catch their attention from their roughhousing. Slowly, they assembled around in a semi-circle in front of him.

“As you are all well aware your parents have decided to entrust me to teach you on a matter most delicate…”

Littlefoot tried to listen attentively. He had a newfound respect and relationship with the old thicknose since the days of the big freeze. If anyone could help them understand ëthe Time of Great Change’ as his grandpa called it, it was him.

Cera nudged him as Mr. Thicknose droned on. Unfortunately, that tendency hadn’t changed.

“Ugh, I wish he wasn’t so boring,” she whispered. “He wouldn’t be so bad if he didn’t sound like a creaky old log.”

“Cut him some slack,” Littlefoot. “Least he’s not a cranky old three horn,” he winked.

“Shut up,” she replied giving him a slightly harder nudge.

“…so in conclusion. I will attempt to inform and guide you on your journey experiencing the Time of the Great Change. Or otherwise known as ëpuberty.’”

The teens all looked at each other in surprise.

“Huh?”

“Let’s just use the term ëGreat Change’ for the sake of posterity. In any case, there a number of things you will experience as you get older and some will be quite strange.”

Ducky looked nervous.

“I do not like the sound of that, Mr. Thicknose.”

“Me neither,” Petri agreed before asking with some reluctance, “What sort of changes? Is it painful?”

“It’s nothing life threatening,” soothed Mr. Thicknose. “Although I will admit some are rather unpleasant. Much of it depends on the species and of course, gender.”

Littlefoot suddenly became more conscious of the girls in his midst, one in particular, who caught his eye and quickly turned away turning beet red (likewise causing a reciprocal reaction).

“I won’t get too graphic” assured Mr. Thicknose. “But there is some basic knowledge you should know. I’ll start with the boys.”

He turned to Littlefoot, Petri and Spike.

“One of the first changes boys typically experience are voice cracks. As your voice deepens sometimes it will alternate between high and low pitches.”

"What that sound like?" squeaked Petri, who then clapped his hands over his beak in embarrassment.

"I think you just answered your own question," laughed Cera.

"Hey, it not funny!" he tried to yell, only for another crack to occur.

Everyone started to laugh at this. Petri attempted to make his voice sound more normal. But the more he tried, the worse it became.

"Alright that's enough" Mr. Thicknose said, betraying a slight amusement in his own voice.

"Oh man, I haven't laughed that hard in good long while," Cera said wiping a tear from her eye with a front paw.

"Moving on," the old Pachyrhinosaurus continued. "The males, especially among three horns, tend to get bolder and much more aggressive. This will manifest itself in many ways, the most common of which tends to be fighting or pranks."

I’ve never really done any pranks before, or want to fight people, thought Littlefoot. Why would I want to now?

He shook his head and tried to divert his attention back to the lesson.

“You all are now at the age where your bodies will start to grow much more rapidly in order to achieve their adult sizes.”

“We are already big, yup, yup, yup. Are you saying we will get bigger?” Ducky asked.

“Yes, and the patterns of growth will vary among you, although girls tend to grow earlier than boys.”

“Haha” Cera said, sticking out her tongue at Littlefoot, Spike and Petri.

“However,” added Mr. Thicknose, with a hint of a chuckle. “The boys will end up sustaining their growth longer and will end up much bigger.”

“Haha” replied Littlefoot in kind, nipping Cera with his tail.

“Hey!”

Mr. Thicknose rolled his eyes.

I almost forgot that growth doesn’t necessarily equate maturity, especially among teenagers

“Anyway,” he said clearing his throat. “In order to facilitate this growth, you all experience an marked increase in appetite. However, it will be especially prevalent among the boys.”

Ducky put her hands on her head.

“Spike already eats enough as it is. He will eat all of the green food in the Great Valley if his appetite gets any bigger.”

They all turned towards the Stegosaurus, who had found a small patch of grass to much on.

“Well I can’t tell a difference so far,” barbed Cera.

She turned back towards Mr. Thicknose.

“All this talk about the boys, what about the girls?” she humphed.

“Do not worry, I have not forgotten about you” said the old teacher. “Girls experience most of the same changes as the boys. However, there are others that will be different, some I will leave to your stepmother to explain to you. But one of the first will be mood swings. These will occur mostly at random, but especially in times when one is feeling emotional or vulnerable…”

“Mr. Thicknose?” Littlefoot interrupted. He felt guilty for doing so, but the question in his mind was bugging him too much.

“Yes Littlefoot?”

“What happens after dinosaurs mate?”

Looking slightly uncomfortable, Mr. Thicknose frowned.

“Er..sorry” Littlefoot backtracked.

“I’m not upset with you Littlefoot, but I am trying to figure out how best to answer your question.”

Standing a little more upright he attempted to address it.

“Well you all know mating is the act of making hatchlings. During this time there is an extended courtship between the male and female dinosaurs. Females will typically not eat for an extended period of time in order to protect the nest. The psychological and physiological stress will cause considerable strain.”

“Suddenly, I feel less enthusiastic about being a girl,” muttered Cera.

“Same,” echoed Ducky. “Yup, yup, yup.”

“During puberty, each gender will start to notice the other in ways previously unknown to them. This in turn causes fighting among the males in order to win the heart of a female.”

“You mean love?” Petri squeaked. “Me no want to fall in love!”

“Yeah that stuff is for grown ups,” Cera added.

Littlefoot stayed silent as he glanced at the orange three horn next to him.

“Well, like it or not, you all are in the midst of becoming adults. This is what happens during the ëTime of the Great Change,” Mr. Thicknose spoke sagely. “It is not always an easy process to go through. But I assure you, you all make it through just fine.”

He then gave a rare smile.

“I too remember first being told about love and being just as apprehensive as you are. But if there’s one thing I can guarantee, it’s that you all will warm up to the idea very soon.”

The others muttered amongst themselves at this revelation, however all Littlefoot could do was stare at Cera. He had been doing this more often lately, and now he was afraid he knew why.

I hate changing, he thought to himself.

Apparently, love had showed up much sooner than expected.

LBT Fanfiction / The Line

Well, I'm sufficiently impressed.

It's actually not quite as dark as I thought it would be, but definitely up there. Just some observations.

1) I like the way you used the domeheads or spikedomes as you call them. They're a dinosaur not frequently featured in the LBT universe and that makes it all the more intriguing.

2) I enjoy your use of imagery and language. They're top notch in my opinion.

3) Reading the part where the daughter won't stop struggling and screaming. Wow...you really picked the most fucked up dilemma a parent could have. The suffocation and strangling...that was hard to read. But as I stated to Rhombus when I first read the Seven Hunters, it's a good kind of hard read. Really makes you think and contemplate the situation in your mind. "What if I was placed in that situation? Would I do the same?"

The role you place Littlefoot here is a good one. It's a job I can see him having. He is the most trustworthy of the five and a great leader. I assume he's of teenage age in this story and significantly bigger?

Anyway, great job with this. I'll be sure to review it on fanfiction as well.

@Fyn and Rhombus

My prompt to you gentleman, although you have already received it. I felt it necessary to make a formal announcement.

"Where does one draw the line in the sand? Often times good and bad are seen as mutually exclusive. But the gray clouds often blur those differences until one day you find yourself unable to tell whether or not you've stayed above the abyss, or already gone over it. And then you wonder if it's too late."

Happy writing, gents. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. And don't go full blown psycho Fyn!

Damn, they don't call you the evil swimmer for nothing, you almost had me there haha.

Now I really wanna know what's up with Ducky's mom. Will they have to go on another wild goose chase to find a cure? Who knows!

And man I like the way you portray Tria here. She's a threehorn but not an overtly aggressive one and she's a good influence on Cera. I like how she wants to talk to Topps about going overboard with Cera's upbringing. Indeed that does seem to be a topic that has come up frequently on this board lately.

looking forward more as always!

Gut gemacht!

I doubt it'll happen. I only want to see another movie if they put some serious thought and character development into it.

Of course the people who run this franchise probably don't know there's a bunch of nerds who go over every little detail of it and want to see more PG-13 kind of stories haha

LBT Fanfiction / The Flyers Who Never Stop Flying
« on: January 31, 2017, 01:04:28 AM »
Well I must say, this was quite touching.

It's interesting to see a take on what happens when dinosaurs die in the LBT series. I assume every herd has its own ritual for burials. The belief in a kind of life after death really set the tone here.

Petrie is usually a spazz. Here he almost loses that out of his own sadness. He's experiencing the motions when one loses a parent and developing that here really brings a level to Petrie we don't see. It's refreshing.

And though this fic isn't centered on them, Littlefoot and Cera's appearance here was crucial. You don't hear either one of them talk about their mothers in the series. It's almost as if it never happened. They comfort Petrie, revealing the more vulnerable sides of themselves, especially surprising in Cera's case (love her gruff sort of affection for Littlefoot haha) because she almost never does.

I liked the last line too. A very good way to cap off the story. I take it this is your first one shot and I think there's a lot of praise to be had here. Hats off to you, man!

I'm glad Cera is seeking out Tria. Don't think her father would be very helpful, especially if it's a "girls" issue as is my guess. Maybe not and that was a bit chauvinistic lol, but I am still very curious as to what's going on with her.

And I really hope Ducky's mom is okay. From the fever and the vomiting, it looks pretty bleak for her at the moment.

Littlefoot better keep his cool, he's the more coolheaded of the two, but he also has a temper. So I hope seeing Cera at the falls doesn't set him off.

LBT Fanfiction / The Way I Am
« on: January 28, 2017, 01:15:55 PM »
Wow! I'm overwhelmed by the amount of positive feedback this is getting. Thanks guys!

Yeah, my goal for this was to give a kind of explanation as to why Cera is the way she is. She has natural tendencies to be bold, brash, and strong willed, but a good portion of it also to do with the way she was raised by her father.

I see Tops as a good parent. He genuinely cares about his daughter and wants to do right by her. But he's also not the most sensitive soul either. And though there's still some debate as to what actually happened to Cera's mother and sisters, I believe Tops is scarred by it as well and it might explain his extremely gruff personality. Remember, Tria did say "He didn't always used to be this mean."

One of the toughest parts was writing her mother. We have no idea what she was like and I didn't want to write her too similarly to Littlefoot's mother. At the same time, I wanted to present her as a necessary counterweight, someone who might have had a different idea of parenting and how to raise a daughter. All Cera gets is the usual jargon- be strong, be tough, show no fear. Might she be a little less rough around the edges if she had a mom around?

Finally, I think it was important to show just how much she misses her mom. The series missed out an opportunity to go deeper into this. I believe Cera was really impacted by her loss. There's the struggle of trying to honor her memory, but she can't because of her natural tendencies and overly aggressive father. Out of the gang of five, she's the most emotionally challenged. The love of her mother is something she has no idea how to emulate, but remembers and wants quite badly.

My only other concern was hoping the dream sequence made sense, seeing that it veered from the events of the first film into Cera's personal nightmare. But I believe it worked out fine.

Anyway, enough of my long personal analysis. Thank you everyone for the reviews and support! I'll be sure to check out the other entries as well!

Also check out my other fic 'This Is Growing Up' if you're not too busy.  :D
