I currently had to manually clean my registry because of some of these things... They're super nasty. Definitely exercise caution.

I created a rouge antivirus myself.  Never publicly released it of course, but I call it Vblaster2010.  I've used it on a few of my enemies, but I make sure it is destroyed once it's been used.  I don't want to get the thing out there on the net and infecting innocents.  But just in case it does, DON'T run it.  It'll restart your computer and format your hard drive. :p I actually use it on occasion when repairing computers.  It's quite useful.  The executable file actually gets deleted after you run it and it formats your hard drive so the chances of it getting on the net are slim.

Actually that could be quite useful if you wanted to start from scratch.

I don't see any practical use of making a rogue antivirus. If you want to make an antivirus to help people, that actually does a good job at removing malware, then fine. But to make a rogue antivirus, for any reason, is just more harmful than beneficial. Not to mention that the last I checked, sending of such material is illegal. That's just how I see it.

These people tend to have no morals.  They have one of two reasons for making these.  One is because they can.  Doing it for what they believe is fun.

The other is what you really have to watch out for.  They're extremely rare, but very few contain something called a Keylogger.  These are designed to steal vital information. (Passwords, credit card numbers, etc.) In the end, it can steal all your money and/or cause you more social harm then imagined.

In my opinion, it's just best to avoid them all together.  Best to do your homework before downloading something that claims to help your computer.  After all, better to be safe then sorry. :)

Sorry to say that Austin, but I had taken you to be more responsible than that. Not only that there remains a chance of the virus infesting other computers after all (in case of many viruses we are told that the creators of that rubbish "never meant" them to do any harm), but also the act of destroying somebody else's data, no matter how much you dislike him or her, is a criminal act of vigilantism for which I cannot muster any understanding. If all my data was deleted so much would be lost, so much work pointless etc. that I do not wish to have anyone else suffer that fate. In its effect it is the same as if you broke into someones house to steal or destroy his or her data. Just because cyber criminality does not require you to get out of your chair does not mean it is any less despicable than "regular crime". I thought that you of all people would understand that <_<

You and I live in different worlds Malte.  I have to protect myself.  It's a defense mechanism only.  The rogue antivirus is disguised as bank records that have been stored onto my computer so no one should get it unless they've hacked into my machine and are trying to steal my identity or money.  Once they look at the fake bank records, the rogue antivirus is automatically downloaded to their computer.  Once downloaded, it sends them a popup saying that they're "infected".  No matter what they click whether it be the "X" button or the "Scan Now" button, it will automatically restart and format their computer.

My computers are full of mines like this.  Any cracker that hacks my computer is f*****. :p I've waged all out wars with crackers before and they're ruthless.  Denying me the permission to create these defense mechanisms is like denying a cop the right to carry a gun just because some criminal can steal it and kill someone with it.  If the criminals already have a weapon then what's the point of denying law enforcement the possession of a weapon?  The chances of innocent people obtaining my little mines are so minor they're not even worth mentioning.  The only way I could think of that a cracker could spread the rogue antivirus is once they're infected, just unplug their computer (Don't shut down) and boot with a portable version of windows.  Then they'd have to transfer it to a flash drive and upload it to somewhere on the net.  The problem?  It'll format ANYTHING meaning that if they uploaded it to driveway.com, it would delete one of their servers.  Any idiot would realize this.  There's no way to safely distribute this unless it's in original form (the bank records).  Once it's out, you can't contain it.  It was programmed inside the bank records.  And the cracker can't download the bank records from my computer because they'd run into another little mine of mine. :p

This one isn't harmful to their computer but to mine.  If they try to download the bank records instead of just looking at them, my computer will give a critical stop error.  They'll believe that I'm a computer novice with a corrupted version of windows and give up on downloading the file.  Instead, they'll copy and paste the information into a new excel document and won't be able to download the exact excel file.  Then they'll ONLY be able to download the text data, NOT the virus container along with it.  My defense mechanisms are so safe.  I make sure that no innocents will be affected by them.  And it's legal (or at least it was in Washington) for someone to defend themselves from crackers in ANY way including destroying their data so long as the cracker struck first.

EDIT:  The #1 difference between my creations and the creations of those hell bent on destroying innocent people's computers is that my viruses are only meant to infect 1 computer (the individual I'm trying to attack or defend myself from).  They're not meant to be sent through the net from any computer but mine.  This is the #1 reason none of my creations are mentioned in any google searches.  No one knows of their creations except for the unfortunate fools who've tried to hack me. :p

Just one more reason why I oppose the idea of using rogue antivirus for defense purposes.

No matter how cautious you are, it is still possible for your own computer or some innocent's computer to get infected. There is always that risk. No matter what safety measures you take, there's always the chance the program could get out. That's just the way I see it.

The only way for this particular rouge antivirus to infect more than 1 computer is for both parties to KNOW what it is, how it works, and how to stop it.  It cannot transfer to more than one computer unless it's 100% intentional and both people (the owner of the first infected machine and the owner of the second machine that is about to become infected) agree to it and know what it is, how it works, and how to stop it.  This will not change even when new versions of windows come out because of compatibility issues.

Whew!  Finally caught up by combining the two main lists on the web.

It now holds 90 New Rouges.

In case you're wondering, these are the sites I used to make the list over the course of 4 days, and I thank them for taking the time to do so:

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_software

I know, I really shouldn't trust Wikipedia, but in this case, we really can't afford NOT to, huh?

Well, see ya later! :)

There is also one called Zimzam that I almost accidently downloaded.  Back in my yonger, more foolish days I had two of those buggers on my computer.  I had Spykiller and another one whose name escapes me at the moment.

Anyway, you should be careful any time you download something.  When I was trying to download Avast Antivirus for my new computer, I ended up on a look alike website and accidently downloaded a real virus.  It looked just like Avast's page but the install process was different.  Then when I clicked "cancel", it started downloading something so I pulled the plug and restarted the computer.  The virus tried to run again when the computer came back up.  I was able to stop it temporarily long enough to install the REAL Avast and then I flame broiled the little sucker.  I also reported the fake website to Avast and it has since been removed.

When someone tries to steal someone else's identity, they deserve whatever misfortune befalls them in the process.

If you want a good free spyware remover, just use Spybot-Search and Destroy.
Here is a link to their site.
http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html

Make sure you use this link though because there are a lot of Spybot clones that are rogues.  If you try to find it on Google, you might end up on one of the look alike websites.

I was just asking because I wasn't sure if TrueAntiSpyware should be added to the rogue list or not.

I no longer use Spybot: Search and Destroy because it no longer works for me. It has refused to scan ever since I upgraded it sometime last year because of some new setting or something.

For antispyware, I primarily rely on Malwarebytes, Panda, and, on occassion, Ad-Aware.

Anyone know if this is a rogue or legit?
It's a real Anti-Spyware Remover.  However, only the scan is free.  You have to pay to remove any problems.  This page shows it's the real deal:

http://anti-spyware-review.toptenreviews.c...spy-review.html

The people of this website test many products that you have to pay for.  It is wise to go with their reviews when you want to pick paid over free. :)

It's frustrating how so many of them have really generic names like "Virus Remover 2008."

And that's the secret to how they are SO easy to fall for.  People believe it's real at first, just because of the name.

Anyways, the list has been updated!  15 New Rouges.

The following sites were used:

http://readerszone.com/microsoft/beware-of...s-programs.html

http://www.geek.com/articles/news/latest-r...sites-20090220/

Oh, and definitely take a look at the final link.  It's just sick to see how much these crooks have gotten from so many poor people. :(
