Hey everyone, pleasure to be here!

As you can probably guess from the username, I'm a bit of a music geek.  :p  That doesn't stop me from enjoying good animation though. Animation is definitely among my preferred genres of film, just as soundtracks are among my preferred genres of music.

I look forward to talking with everyone here!

Have you tried any of James Horner's compostions?

I'm quite familiar with the Land Before Time soundtrack, as I own a CD of it and made a point of ripping it to my computer. :)

Aside from that obvious point though, while Horner may not be the most highly-respected composer in this current era (a number of other artists and critics claim Horner to be a bit of a music thief, but there's controversy anywhere you look), I find that his scores are able to bring an atmosphere to a scene that few others of the modern day can achieve.

Speaking of controversial, I can honestly say that I felt that Horner's music in the Land Before Time was an overall stronger presentation than Shore's Lord of the Rings soundtrack. One could also argue that Shore had a LOT more content to try and score and therefore time was more of a constraint (look at the differences in the lengths of the two films!!)

Anyway, that's a whole other can of worms, maybe not best-suited to an LBT forum (though perhaps on the right sub-board...).

As I can see your views, Horner is one of my favorite composers as I watched many films containing his scores.  I also believe that he is respected in some areas like my area.  My teachers and a few students find his pieces to bring the atmosphere you mentioned earlier.  So I am guessing that the information is based on specific areas.  The Land Before Time soundtrack was exceptional in some of his scores, but mostly the main theme.

Aside from that, this is a forum, and you are not limited to talking just LBT.

If by "Main Theme" you mean "If We Hold On Together", then yes, I'd say that was a gorgeous song. I was very pleasantly surprised to see a contestant (and later winner) of American Idol (Jordan Sparks, I believe was her name) singing the song, a few years back. Really made my day!

Aside from that though, there are places, even in the LBT score where one can clearly find evidence of inspiration/ripoffs from other famous pieces, which I've seen pointed out to me in the past. Upon A/B comparison of the LBT score to the "inspirational" piece, there are extremely similar instrument/orchestration techniques and musical styles/structures used, to the point where it almost appears that it's the same piece with the notes moved around a bit.

That being said though, there are only 12 notes in the modern musical system. If a certain combination says it best, why mess with it?

To create a new piece is almost impossible as there can only be 352 different variations in the musical system.  They have no choice.  The variations are repeated to make the score which is where they show evidence of "ripoffs".

Welcome to the GoF. Hope you enjoy your stay! :DD

I really love the soundtrack of LBT too. Other than that, I mostly listen to video game music. I love the classic 8-bit tunes, and also the epic orchestral pieces. You interested in that any?

Absolutely I am! As a matter of fact, you can check out some remasters of some classic video game tracks I've done up on my Youtube channel, found in my signature, if you're curious.  I've just started it up fairly recently so there isn't a lot of content yet. Tons more will be on the way though!

Thank you for your warm welcomes everyone. As some of you may have determined (especially the admins, who can see IP addresses :p), this is actually a second account of mine.

I was previously known as action9000 on this board, a long-term member since 2005 and staff member since 2006.

I have decided to open this new account because I want to stress that I am no longer here as a staff member. I am here to enjoy the company of good people, which this community is honestly full of.

I also began feeling very out-of-touch with the community and its goings-on and felt the best way to express that I'm out of the loop and wanting to jump back in a little bit was to start on a fresh account.

I am also looking into abandoning the action9000 screen name, in general (not just here, but as an 'identity') in the future, as I feel it doesn't speak to me the way it once did.

It was also feeling disrespectful to everyone to just disappear for months at a time as an admin, only to reappear randomly like nothing happened.

All in all, I felt that a new account best expressed my rekindling of my relationship with this forum, one not connected to a 'staff' mentality or 'the old crowd' (considering I joined when the GoF was barely 50 members).

A new account best accomplishes my internal and external goals that I had for spending more time on this forum.

Thank you for listening.

Somehow.. I was wondering if it was you, Tim (I guess I'm that used to your use of language). :)

I couldn't tell it was you, but then again, I'm still sort of a new member.
