I'll remain doing it the Luddite way, a dvd player hooked up to the tv, but likely watching most of my videos on the pc.

Ha!  My home systems are about twice as complicated as that and guess who had to hook it all up without instructions? :p Took me a total of 2 hours a day for 4 days!

EDIT:  Sorry.  Forgot the word "are". :p

That isn't so bad, actually; diagrams/schematics always make stuff like this look scarier than it actually is. :p

My only question: why are we networking the microwave?  :lol

What!?! No Wii? Or Stepmania pads? This isn't that awesome/confusing at all unless there is a Nintendo Wii and some DDR available to be played.

Looks like the average person would have to ask an electrical engineer major or computer systems engineer major over to hook that up for them.

My only question: why are we networking the microwave?

I have a networked microwave.  It doesn't work right now and I got it for free from an IT professional.  I'm hoping to take it apart and fix it but for now, it's not working.

A networked microwave is a real asset.  It comes with a program so you can control it with your computer.  Very handy for those of us who put the food in but forget to push the start button. :p

Honestly I really don't know why you would need to control your microwave from your computer.

You can set it to start and have the food or drink ready when you wake up, or get home.

Maybe some would rather have the pc push the start button for them.

Yeah but computers have to be told what to do, so what's the difference here?  Just push "start". :p

If you don't want to press start why not just pay someone to press start for you.
