the sad thing is it could have worked but they really fucked up the execution. Winnie the Pooh and the others being angry at being abandoned that idea has potential. but the way they did it was just stupid.

This looks like it'll be a pretty cool show

                                                                            ELEVEN YEARS LATER

                                        Tenant's Way

A much older James Zanasiu tumbled out of the gate Cimarron and Malte Kerzach rushing up to catch him. "Where... am... I?" he asked.

"Tenant's way. Dr Zanasiu I assume?" Cimarron asked.

"Yes, I need to get to Carson City Camp." James replied holding his head. He was still feeling a little woozy from the trip.

"We'll make sure you get there." Malte said assisting James out of the room.

"I'll get you a ride out of the city from there you're on your own."

"Thank you Cimarron." Malte said with a nod of his head.

"No problem. Just paying back the debt I owe you."

Malte and James Sr. were driven to the outskirts of the city where they took a cab to the airport landing in Nevada a few hours later. Soon enough they arrived at the Carson City Camp.

"Identifications please." the guard said. Malte and James handed their id's over the guard stopping for a few moments at Jame's ID. "Excuse me for a moment." The guard shut the door and picked up a phone speaking for a few moments before hanging the phone up. "Head to main building. Follow the bike" He motioned for another guard who got on a motorcycle that started heading off into the camp.
James followed the guard who lead the pair to the main building where General Corta was waiting for them. the car and motorcycle came to a halt. James stepped out of the car saluting Corta.

"James! It's good to see you again! I see that plan you Werner and Kerzach payed off." Corta said returning the salute.

"I'm just glad to be back. Now we can synthesize the cure and stop this in its tracks." James, Malte and Corta walked to the infirmary "We did it. I can't wait to tell Werner it worked."

"Let's get the cure done first." Corta waved his hand. "Werner would want the cure ready before contact."

James nodded his head in reply as the group arrived. The doctor readied a needle and drew some blood putting the vial in a cooler and ready for transport. "Now we should get to calling..." James trailed off as he saw the look on Corta's face.

"James... Werner's dead." Corta hung his head.

"How? When?"

"Two weeks ago. One of our agents went rogue and she stabbed him."

"Mr Zanaisu. He died defending myself Florence and James." Malte spoke up.

"Junior? Where is he?"

"He went through the gate to retrieve you. He didn't come out so he's probably wherever you got the cure from." James then realized the words Corta had used.

"Where is she?" he asked his tone being of restrained anger.

"Before you go off to confront her I have a message." Corta said taking out a small round object. Corta pressed a button and an holographic image of Werner appeared.

"Hello James." the image said. "If you're seeing this then either Shelton's Disease has claimed me or something else has happened. If it's Shelton's Disease then You did what you could and I hold no ill will toward you."
The image took a long sigh. "If it's the other... then I ask... no I beg you please don't hold it against her. I know you were the right choice but I find myself thinking if I had chosen her over you she might have found that peace."
The image took a drink from a glass before continuing. "I also wanted to say it has been an honor having you as a friend and please deliver this to Evelyn." The image held up a second object similar to the one the message was playing from.
"Make sure she gets it. farewell... friend." the image faded and disappeared. Corta handed James a second similar object.

James was breathing heavily. Part of him wanted to rip Pomson limb from limb, while the other part wanted to honor his friends wishes. "take me to her."

Evelyn Pomson was sitting in her cell the weight of the past few years weighing down on her. another raptor walked up to her.

"You're weak! A failure! just like your mother!" the raptor snarled.

"Father! I... I'm not a failure!"

"You couldn't even avenge me properly! You were taken out by a child half your age!"

"Evelyn! You don't have to listen to him!" a human walked up to the second raptor "You still have a chance!"

"A chance for what?! She was weak and the strong overcome the weak!"

"And yet you were essentially beaten by a bunch of nerds Halsey."

"Shut up! If there's one thing she was successful at it was kill you! Rectifying the problem of that relationship!"

"And yet I still treated her with more respect than you did."

"You dare speak of respect when you were too weak to lead the settlement?"

"You're right, I had my flaws. I screwed up from time to time. But I gave them  choice. I didn't force my will on them unlike you. Unlike what you taught your daughter. You never cared about her!"

"I am her father! She will choose me!"

"Look at her! she needs help not chastising!"

"What she needs is firm discipline!"

"What she needs is a friend, a kind heart." The human walked over and knelt down. "Someone who believes she can do good even after all she's done."

Pomson's face was a mix of emotions: anger, regret, sadness and rage. "I..." she started only for the raptor and human to disappear. Footfalls from the hallway broke her train of thought and she heard the steps stop in front of her cell.
She heard the door unlock and another human walk into her cell. She locked eyes and for once she froze. She couldn't bear to look the human in the eye.

"Evelyn Pomson..." James said as he walked to a table. half of which was behind a reinforced clear plastic wall.

Evelyn couldn't find the words to respond. She continued looking away from James.

"I thought you'd want to know Wener's plan worked. "The cure is being synthesized as we speak." James's eyes were locked on her. "And I hear you murdered Werner while he was defending my son and his friends." James was speaking with restrained anger and rage.
"But I am doing what Werner wants. This is your one chance to come clean, I'm doing this for Werner not you. Until you prove yourself you stay away from me and my family." James got up to leave but stopped. "Oh that reminds me." James placed the object in a slide and slide it to Pomsons side.
"Werner had a final message for you as well." James turned and left the room.

Pomson watched James leave before she slowly made her way over. She found a small round holographic projector. Pomson gulped and pressed the button. She saw the hologram appear as she once again saw the image of her former lover.

"Hello Evelyn. If you're watching this then Shelton's Disease has claimed me. I... I have so much to say yet so little time." The image sighed shaking his head. "I want to apologize. I let my concern for you cloud my judgement. You could have been the right choice."
The hologram shook his head. "I never thought that I... I loved you Evelyn... I should have spent the years I had left with you."

Evelyn felt tears run down her face as she moved to put her hand on the hologram's cheek. She watched as it turned solid upon her touch. "Werner..."

"Please Evelyn turn back. Become the good person I know you are it's not too late." The hologram gave a sad sigh shaking his head. "Goodbye Evelyn. I love you and remember I will always be with you." the hologram faded as the raptor and human reappeared.

"Touching..." the raptor snarled. "The fool thinks his simple message and redeem you? You're utterly irredeemable!"

"Evelyn." The human said outstretching his hand. "Take my hand. Let go of him. He can't control you anymore."

Pomson looked between the two finally landing on the human. "I want to be free of him."

"Finally! You made a good choice for once..." the raptor started only to be interrupted.

"Not him..." Pomson said looking to the raptor. "I want to be free of you."

The raptor felt a blast of wind blowing hard at him tearing bits and pieces off him. He gave an enraged roar as soon the wind consumed him as his image turned to dust.

"You made the right choice. This are your first steps. I will be with you every step of the way." The human walked toward Pomson and seemingly merged with her.

General Corta entered the room. Pomson hadn't even heard his footsteps "Have you made your choice on the plea deal?"

"Yes." Evelyn nodded her head. "I'm taking it. I deserve the time. I want to do whatever it takes."

"I'll notify the judge." Corta turned to leave noting the projector on the table. he said nothing and left the room.

Evelyn looked off to the door as if she saw something. "I'm sorry..."

From the door a spirit watched the scene. "I forgive you." He didn't notice a second figure walk up to him before they placed a hand on his shoulder.

"It's time to go."

The spirit turned around and saw a man in a black suit. "Is she going to be okay?"

"Yes she will be Werner." the man said.

"You know you aren't how I imagined you would be."

"I appear however I need to be. I don't always go for the reaper look."

Pomson looked up and squinted her eyes. She wasn't sure but she thought she saw something.

Werner gave a nod and another smile before he turned away with the figure. The two disappeared down the hallway as they walked.

Evelyn for the first time felt at peace with everything. She sat down and closed her eyes smiling.

"Werner? What is it?" James walked over to the table. Werner motioned to the microscope. "This Sheltons's blood sample?" he asked.

"Yes, and as you can see there are anti-particles in his system."

"So? Richard Anderson had them in his system for years and he never had a brain hemorrhage." Kerzach countered.

"And yet it happened to Rudy and Oscar." Werner replied. Werner took another sample labeled "Hans" and put a drop of Prinophalyne on it looking under the microscope. The sample turned a milky white like the other. "One is a coincidence, two is a freak occurrence but three..." Werner trailed off looking up to allow James to see the sample.

James looked at the sample his face turning pale as he turned to look Werner in the face. "three's a pattern." he finished.

"Something is going on with the Einstein-Rosen Bridge. And whatever it is it's affecting everyone who's used it."

"Is it transmissible?" James asked.

"Dear God if it were... it could make a disease that makes The Black Death look like a picnic by comparison!" Kerzach exclaimed.

"There's one way to find out." Pomson spoke up taking a pin and pricking her arm to get a sample. Werner gave her a swab and slide to gather the sample.

"Survey says..." Were started putting a drop of Prinophalyne on the sample. Werner sighed in relief as the sample remained unchanged. "It's not transmissible."

"Is is genetic?" Pomson asked. Everyone froze where they were. If it wasn't transmissible than that was the second question that needed to be answered.

"That one is going to be harder. We'd need a sample of Malte or Jr's blood." Werner stated.

"And only two people here would be able to get access to either." Werner and Pomson looked to Kerzach and James.

"well Steven's book said the daughter of the anti-matter you came here because her father and mother were sick." James said. "I remember reading it."

"Wait... she was of two parents who went through a gate... On no..." Werner looked his two friends in the eye. "If she got it then most likely it IS genetic for us."

"We'll need to confirm but if that is the case we need to think of a way to stop this before it spreads out of control." Kerzach leaned on the desk.

"Any ideas?" Pomson asked the four looking to each other.

"If the gate caused it maybe it can fix it. James! remember when you were stuck in one that one time with Rick Warden?"

"Yes." James replied.

"If we rig it to contain you in a pocket dimension. Someone can come by to get you out in the future so you can be sent back."

"Ridiculous! You can time travel using the gate!" Kerzach exclaimed.

"Not yet you can't. But if we leave the clues to show what we did someone in the future can do it to retrieve James and send him back with the cure. We all know Wittaker and the government would just bury the story."

"How long would I have to be gone?" James asked.

"it would depend on who we have do it. I can't I have the settlement to look after. And, well knowing you I'm pretty sure you wouldn't allow any of us to do it."

"You're right. I'll check my son to see if it has any effect on our children when I get home." James said.

"As will I." Kerzach countered.

"I should do it." pomson interrupted.

"What?" James asked.

"I want to be the one who jumps. I should be the one. My father created the inital bridge for his own intentions. I want... I NEED to be the one to do it. I want to make amends for what my father did."

"Evelyn... I understand you want to make amends. But it makes more sense to send someone infected."

"So?"

"It's going to take a long time to make the bridge lock to be able to send the person back. Sending someone already infected ensures they won't drop dead prematurely."

"Werner, I don't care that I will get it! I'll just be grabbing the cure!"

"I don't want anything to happen to you Evelyn! I'd never be able to forgive myself if something did!"

"You're siding with your friend rather than your lover?!"

"Evelyn..."

"No! Don't you Evelyn me!"

"We can still have a few years together! make the most of it!" Werner moved to cuff Evelyn's chin in his hand but she smacked them away while growling.

"Goodbye Werner." Pomson stormed out of the room slamming the door shut running off.

"Evelyn!" Werner chased after her but the raptor was too fast for him. He collapsed to his knees as tears started running down his face. James slowly made his way over putting his hand on his friends shoulder.

"Let's go home." James helped Werner to his feet as his friend wiped the tears away.

"I should also be getting back I have a dinner at the Smithsonian to attend. It'll get better Werner. There's plenty of fish in the sea."

As Evelyn ran farther from the area a car with Government plates pulled over in front of her causing her to stop. A short balding man stepped out of the car. "Miss Pomson I have a proposistion for you."

Pomson raised an eyebrow. "Name your price?" she asked.

James and Werner regrouped at Camp Carson. Jame's face was a look of despair. "It is genetic Werner."

"I owe you this much." General Molby sighed. "If you can stop this threat before it becomes a problem. You'll save more lives than any human in history."

"Thank you General. Just make sure your replacement knows if James returns after you've left." Werner said.

"I'll make sure of it." Werner opened the bridge the blue hue lighting his face setting the co-ordiants.

"I'll make sure your son is safe when he gets to the settlement."

"Thank you Werner. Take care of yourself. And... I'm sorry things didn't work out with Evelyn."

"It'll be alright." The two friends shared a smile before James walked into the gate Werner shutting it off.

"You need a ride there?" General Molby asked.

"No, I'll be alright." when Werner returned to the settlement it was still dark out. He walked to his hut and turned the light on. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare was still sitting on the table where he'd left it. Sighing he sat down and opened to where he last was.
He wry smirk as he started reading. "To be. Or not. To be."

Oh dang new Darwin's Soldiers content? In 2022? I'm glad this story's back up and running! Heating up too, the characters are figuring big things out :D

I'm impressed by all the callbacks to older works, there are a lot of tie-ins to older Darwin's Soldiers content in here. And I'm glad Shelton made a pseudo-appearance as a vial of blood, I remember being sad reading this story where the major characters all reunite, and he's not there cause I killed him off lol. I'm not sure I'd have done that so readily if I'd known we would still be writing new content a decade later.

I also like how your story gives Pomson a lot more screentime and complex personality. I barely gave her any in Chasing Seconds, and what she got was her being an antagonistic force. She never got any scenes of just being herself, you've done more with the character than I ever did tbh

I always did think she and Werner did have something since Werner only ever referred to her by her first name. made me think of what caused her to become that bitter person she was in Chasing Seconds. I tried my best to give her a bit of tragedy to her to help show why that happened.

"May I come in?" Whittaker asked.

"knock yourself out." Werner swung the door open to let the agent in.

"Werner who was... at... the door..." James trailed off as he saw Whittaker.

Whittaker walked in. "Dr Zanasiu. How wonderful to see you again." Whittaker said with his usual sincerity. his eyes turned to Pomson. "And this is?"

"Evelyn Pomson." Pomson replied her eyes locked firmly on whittaker watching for any strange movements.

"Ah, yes the daughter of the terrorist who attacked Pelvandia." He then turned his attention to Werner. "I do wonder why is it three survivors of the staff there are gathering together especially two prominet menbers of the team building the gate system."

"What concern is it of yours?" Werner asked he looked to pomson who looked like she was ready to pounce on whittaker.

"It's our job to worry." Whittaker replied. "Can't have you causing more trouble."

"Well we'll certainly contact you if we are planning anything." Werner shot back.

"Just wanting to remind you. We have our eyes on you." Whittaker replied smiling before leaving.

"Asshole." Wener muttered after whittaker left.

"You said it." james replied.

"I've never liked government agents and probably never will." Pomson remarked.

"I'm surprised you didn't pounce on him."

"I thought about it but knew you wouldn't approve."

Werner nodded his head. "it's good you didn't we don't need that trouble on us. Werner went through his bag noting he had acked some of his fathers things including a bottle of drops that he could just barely read. Whatever thought he had was interrupting by more knocking at the door.

"James? Werner? It's me Krezach."

James answered the door. "Yuri. Glad you're here."

"I came as soon as I could."

"Now we can get started." Pomson said attarcting Krezach's attention. "Who's this?"

"Evelyn Pomson, Werner's girlfriend." James replied.

Krezach gave a glance to Werner. "You know what shelton would say right?"

"She's not like him. We've helped each other."

Yuri put up his wings defensively. "i'm just saying not accusing or anything."

"Good." Pomson replied.

"Shall we get started?" James suggested breaking the ice.

"Yes that sounds like a good idea." Werner replied taking a seat to go through the paperwork.

Several hours later James sighed and set the last of his pile aside. "Anything on your end?" he asked the other three.

"Nope."

"Nada."

"Nein." came the repies. Werner looked at a sample under a microscope when an idead came to him. "Hey james?"

"yeah?"

"Do we have any samples of shelton's blood?"

"Not on me. Why?"

"Damn. I have an idea but we need a sample of Shelton's blood. Preferably our shelton but either will do."

"I have one." Kerzach replied handing a vial to werner. "Shelton thought it best we each have one incase the other died during our undercover operation with dragonstorm."

"Thank you." Werner took the sample and squirted a bit on a slide. "Looks fairly normal." Werner replied after looking at it. He looked away and back to the vial of drops his father had. "I wonder..." he thought aloud.

"Hmm?" james asked as he saw wener take the drops out of his bag.

"Werner what are those?" Krezach asked looking at the drops.

"Prinophalyne" Werner read after straining a bit to read.

"I remember my father saying that it'd be used to determine who lockdown was." pomson remembered.

"Curious..." werner said squirting a drop on the sample. He watched as it turned a milky white. Werner felt the hairs stand on the back of his head. "Oh mein Gott..."

And... we are back
