I hope you and your family is ok indeed, Chile.

Wasn't there another member from Chile that joined recently?

I hope the damage done/lifes lost isn't as bad as it can be :(

I just read about this.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/lt_chile_earthquake (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/lt_chile_earthquake)

8.8, that's a strong earthquake, strong enough to cause a tsunami. At least the death toll doesn't seem so high at the moment.

Oh boy. The Caribbean is a dangerous place to be now :( .
I say that they evacuate everyone in the next island that looks like it'll suffer a quake.

Well its really impossible to predict earthquakes, and Chile is a continental country on the Pacific coast of South America, not an island in the Caribbean.  But anyway, at least it doesn't seem to have caused damage anywhere near the scale of the Haiti quake, and so far the biggest wave spotted is only 7.7 ft tall so it looks like it isn't nearly as bad as it could have been

Hello:
And thank you very much for your concernm it means a lot.
The earthquake was south in my country: about 92 kilometers north-east from Concepcion and was 8.3 in the Richter scale.
Still, my relatives and friends that live in the affected zones are fine, and that is a great relief.

Now has anybody know anything from one of the newest members of GoF? the one named Dante that is also a chilean?

8.8 would rank it im the top 5 or 6 in recorded history. the strongest on record - a 9.3 - also hit Chile .

A great relief indeed that you are alright Fernando. We haven't heard of Dante yet though
If you are reading this Dante, please post at least a short message so we know if you are alright.

Hawaii is alright too. There was a tsunami that swept all the way out from Chile to the Pacific, but apparently, Hawaii was spared the worst of it. Latin America seems to be very unlucky with Earthquakes this year... and it's only February.

Ah yes, heard about that on CNN while watching a little of Sky TV.  Saw the photos and all, man, it sucks, that's for sure.

But good to know you're okay Chiletrek, you and your relatives ^^

Hello:
And thank you everybody for your messages. We have all seen how the situation is right now, with about 80% of my country having suffered damage, so I hope we will be able to stand up again as fast as we can... as we always do :) .
 Again, thank you all!

I'm glad that Chiletrek is ok.  I wonder if Dante is to busy with rl stuff to respond.  He wasn't to active before the earthquake I think due to being so busy.

I find this rather amusing: that earthquake was strong enough to shorten Earth's day by a few milliseconds and shift its figure axis by a few inches.

Hello:
Yes, I saw that news too, also from NASA's webpage. It is incredible how strong earthquakes can really be.
I have also seen some videos of the tsunamies... those killed many people and left too many other people totally homeless, and the destruction caused in other cities is quite heavy.
But the worst part is how some people is so.... lower that goes into robbery... one may think that they try to steal food or something, but no, they have entered to places and commercial stores to steal unnecessary things... things like that truly makes me feel ashamed I am from the same country as those people.
I truly hope that will stop very soon.

If true that is interesting news.  I don't think most folks would notice, but still interesting indeed if an earthquake can do that.

So far you have never really mentioned what effects the earthquake had right at the spot where you live Fernando. I'm very glad that apparently you and your relatives did not suffer any damage, but how did you experience the earthquake?

Hello:
And thank you Sky and Paradise Bird. I also hope Dante will come back online, he did have problems with the english, but that can be easily solved... if Dante lives in the affected areas, it may take some time until coming online again, but let's hope that he is ok.

As for your question Malte, I didn't feel it. the earthauqke happened at many kilometers south of Santiago, and I live in the northest city at 2080 km north of Santiago. The earthquake was in it's faintest magnitude in Antofagasta at about 1000 km south of my city. But I know what an earthquake feels like, because I remember three that were over 7 in the Richter scale that affected my city: In 1987, 2001 and 2005 with many quakes of many magnitudes every now and then.

Even with my experience, I cannot really give myself an idea of the horror an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 (in Richter because it was 9 in the Mercalli scale) can cause.
-----
Just an hour ago, a quake hitted the city of Calama (a city that is center of lots of the mining in Chile), it was 6.3 in the Richter scale... and a lot more closer to my city. I just wanted to let you know.

The aftershock would not be stronger than the original release so rest assured.

Hello:
Thank you people for your concern, it means a lot :DD .
The quake that hitted Calama is a separate event, not an aftershock of the earthquake from south of Chile. But speaking of aftershocks, I think the strongest one was of 6.9 in the Richter scale. Scientists say that aftershock could continue for at least two months, but they will be getting less regular in time, until the techtocnic plates finish re-accomodating themselves.

I recently heard that there's a photo of a man holding up a Chilean flag, which has been giving hope to the country. I can't seem to find that photo at the moment, but I remember what it looks like.

Hello:
I know what pic you are referring to. It was indeed aeen all around the world. Maybe we could find it somewhere as my scanner is still broken (I have the pic as it has appeared in the newspapers.).
