Title: Netflix's The Social Dilemma
Post by: Mumbling on September 15, 2020, 09:01:32 AM
Netflix recently released the documentary The Social Dilemma (https://www.netflix.com/title/81254224) which goes into the impact of social media, not just on our lives, but on politics and mental health as well. It mostly features people who have previously worked in the industry and are now opening up about what is happening behind the scenes and why it is such a problem.

Has anyone else seen it (or intends to see it)?

I wasn't sure if I should put this in Silver Screen or in After Midnight, as it could potentially turn into a discussion about internet privacy etc. Discussing big data should really be done in another topic, but for now here are some things you can use to make your internet browsing a little more private:
- Use an ad blocker. I personally recommend uBlock Origin.
- Another useful add-on is Privacy Badger, which will block unwanted trackers and cookies.
- Firefox recently released a "Facebook Container" add-on: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/facebook-container-prevent-facebook-tracking

In general I recommend using Firefox over Google Chrome because... it's Google ;)

And while I do use Google as my default search engine, as it seems better optimized than alternatives, I do want to share some alternatives:
https://www.ecosia.org/?c=en < every search you make contributes to planting trees around the globe. Has been around for a long time and is trustworthy. Uses Bing's search engine.
https://duckduckgo.com/ < search engine that focuses on privacy.

Do you have any tips you'd like to share?
