The Written Word / Iain M Banks and the Culture Series
« on: August 02, 2019, 12:16:18 AM »
Hey all! I've recently discovered Iain M Banks' works, specifically his stories set in his Culture universe. I've gotten through Use of Weapons and The Player of Games, and I am frankly blown away at how wonderfully thoughtful and engaging his views of a post scarcity galactic civilization and its people are. The sociopolitical and cultural aspects being as important, if not moreso, than the technology that enables the society is fascinating, and in those regards it outstrips a lot of what I'd previously considered to be extremely progressive science fiction.

Has anyone else read or enjoyed these excellent books?

Hey all! It's great to see this place is still up and running! Figured I'd poke my head in and say hello to all the new folks, and the old folks who, dare I say it, might even recall me (hopefully favorably)!

So hi, hello, and how are things?

Silver Screen / Top 5 films of 2009
« on: January 17, 2010, 08:21:03 PM »
Well, 2009 has come to an end, and a another year of new films has come to a close. Now that the year is over, I can finally post this thread. So, to the members of the GOF, I ask you: what were your favorite flicks of 2009?

My list:

1) Star Trek-This film has given me hope for the future. This movie single-handedly catapulted an aging sci-fi series back into the modern world. The reboot of the Trek franchise pretty much made my year, and this was perhaps the only film of the year I'd consider to be close to perfect. The casting was fantastic, the story was simple yet engaging, and the dialogue was brilliant. I know some hardcore Trek fans say that the movie messed up in the science department and robbed Trek of its intellect, but honestly, I think the series began slowly losing intelligence from the moment Star Trek V was released, and that the action was a great change of pace from all the usual diplomacy of Trek. Fresh, exciting, and dramatic, Star Trek is without a doubt my favorite film of 2009.

2) Avatar-I'm definitely going to get judged for this, but I really loved Avatar. It's sincere, beautiful to look at, functionally written, rousing in the classic Hollywood sense, and simplistic in the way fables are. It's also a display of genuine vision, something in short supply these days. Cameron's a genius with a tin ear, a master showman who never met a cliche he didn't like. He tells stories visually, with the words as a prop for the feeling. It's pure, visceral filmmaking, and I get that if you don't buy into the sentiment from moment one, Avatar's lost you. I did, and I was moved by it.

3) District 9- District 9 is a grittier, darker version of the usual first-contact with aliens plot, with mankind as the villain. Provocative and deep, it is an allegory for our time, bursting with contemporary themes -- oppression, greed, power, propaganda, and the conflict of dissimilar cultures. All of this is presented from the perspective of one man who is chased by his own species as he slowly becomes one of the aliens, and the entire movie is filmed documentary-style. Thought-inducing and riveting right up until the very end, District 9 is perhaps the best $30 million ever spent in the film making industry.

4) Inglorious Basterds- The best of the Tarantino films, Inglorious Basterds manages to keep its gory violence somewhat in check whilst also showcasing its superb cast and screenplay, which centers on near-perfect dialogue. It's pretentious, narcissistic, and completely unreal, not to mention half it's background characters still get their own intros, but none of that matters. The humor alone carries this movie, even through the boring, unnecessary scenes that were designed to be elaborate but somehow fall short. It's purely outlandish, incredibly violent nature is just something that cannot be replicated, and, despite the film's flaws, it's incredible uniqueness more than earns it a place on my list.

5) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince- I thoroughly enjoyed the latest addition to the Potter series. This film had a near perfect dynamic between light and dark scenes, and I loved the heavier reliance on characters, dialogue and story. While the action in this film is limited, the tone and writing, along with Rowling's fantastic world, are more than enough to hold a viewer's attention. Now only two films are left in the Potter series, and, after this latest movie, I look forward to The Deathly Hallows Part I with great anticipation.

Well, there's my two cents. What's everyone else's opinion?

Gamers Zone / Question
« on: January 06, 2010, 04:19:12 PM »
Hey, sorry if this has been asked before, but I can't really seem to find anything that answers my question. Is there a thread where GOF members can post their gamertags or friend codes or anything like that? I'm sure there is, but I must have missed it...

Hey guys, I just got done watching the Spike VGAs, and The Force Unleashed II is official! I'll post a link to the trailer soon. The announcement was predictable for me, but still welcome.

Silver Screen / Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-present)
« on: December 02, 2009, 07:04:28 PM »
Yeah, if you're even a casual Star Wars fan, you probably know about this little project. Conceived in 2008 as a 90-minute film designed to promote a TV series of the same name, this project has pretty much devastated the Star Wars community. While the movie is universally regarded as trash, the TV series is holding its own with roughly a million and a half viewers a week.

Now, not many people enjoy the new series, but I've been following it and thought I'd point out some of it's better aspects. The visuals have been steadily improving and are now pretty spectacular. While a good portion of the episodes seem to regress the Star Wars story and feel to something less than it deserves, the episodes that are good really stand out, and are great to watch. The plots have slowly become more complex, and even the trashy dialog has improved. Overall, it's looking promising.

However, that isn't to say I fully approve of this series, even with it being Star Wars. The fact of the matter is that it is too destructive towards previous works in the Star Wars canon, the first and greatest offense being the creation of Ashoka, Anakin's never-before-mentioned Padawan, who, while having become a somewhat interesting character over the course of the series, simply does not fit in to the established Clone Wars mythos. The Clone Wars was a period that had already seen dozens of stories injected into it, and the new series has already denied the existence of some works (mainly everything in the year 22 BBY) and is threatening others. Karen Traviss' Republic Commando novels are no longer considered true canon because of a plan to redesign Mandalore as a peace-loving planet that is recovering from an environmental war. This even goes against the backstories of characters in the films, like Jango Fett, and make no sense in the overall picture of the Star Wars saga. It should be noted that several authors, including Traviss, have broken off from all Star Wars-related work in protest.

I understand that George Lucas does have all rights to the Star Wars universe, and that it is his, but still, I find it hard to believe that he would destroy whole story arcs in the continuity of the saga, works that represent tens of thousands of hours of artists' work, just to create a new TV series. I sincerely hope that, at the end of this series, a decision will be made that labels Star Wars: The Clone Wars either secondary canon or non-canon. No offense, George, but it's just not working, and I guarantee you'll regret it in the long run.

So yeah, does anyone else have an opinion?

Does anyone know where I can find good Star Wars sound effects (lightsabers, blasters, etc.)? I've been looking around, but there just seems to be a lot of quotes.

Gamers Zone / Games in need of sequels
« on: October 26, 2009, 04:17:28 PM »
I've been looking through my game collection, and I've found that there are quite a few titles that were excellent games that were practically made to be continued, and yet have no sequels. So I thought I'd post them here.

Star Wars: TIE Fighter. This game was my very first experience with video games, and I'll never forget it. The amazing space-sim gameplay is still unparalleled today, and it holds the distinctive title of being one of the first games in which you play as the villain. Even Gamespot and IGN agree it's one of the best games of all time. So where's the sequel? (This goes for the X-wing series as well)

Star Trek: Bridge Commander. This game, along with Elite Force 1 and 2, proved to the world that Star Trek could be made into a playable, fun game. The game had so much promise, and yet ended so abruptly. Sequel? (Star Trek Online may have a combat system very similar to this game)

Kingdom Hearts 2. I'm still waiting for Kingdom Hearts 3. This series is just too cool to end with 2.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron series. Yeah, Rogue Squadron 3 sucked, but the series was still pretty awesome. I'm still holding out hope that there will be a Rogue Squadron 4 someday.

So, what games do you think should have sequels?

This show rocks. There's really no other way to describe it. I'm not talking about the the story or the actors or anything, just the music. It may not be original, but this stuff is phenomenal! Here, I'll post a few links to some of their renditions:

I've been replaying these games, and I forgot how cool they were. The gameplay, the music, even the sprites were awesome. These games kind of shaped me, and I wanted to know what everyone else thought of them. Personally, I like Yellow version the best.

Silver Screen / Star Trek 2009
« on: May 13, 2009, 07:51:56 PM »
Wow. Just...wow. This has easily become the best movie of the year. The action was so well-done, the characters were perfect. Even the story was pretty awesome. This is easily the best Trek, and just an incredible film. I gave it an A- only because of some of its more odd effects and one or two 30-second weird scenes. Still, great film.

What do you guys think of it?

Didn't think there was a topic for this yet! I've been a regular viewer of this show for about six months, and I have to say, it's awesome! I'm not really a car enthusiast, and yet this show is almost perfect for me. Anyone else here watch it?

LBT Fanfiction / LBT crossovers you want to see
« on: February 05, 2009, 11:27:35 PM »
So, I figured that since there's already a topic for seemingly absurd crossovers, I thought it'd be cool to see what LBT crossovers people would actually like. ( I seem to remember another topic like this, but I couldn't recall if it had been done. Sorry if I posted a redundant topic!)

Gamers Zone / Star Wars Battlefront III
« on: January 24, 2009, 09:27:18 PM »
I just saw the leaked footage of this game on Youtube, in addition to the leaked concept art, and I have to say this game looks freakin' sweet. The graphics look very next-ten, and the addition of an actual story mode (putting aside BFII's 501st campaign), complete with a light or dark side choice, is pretty awesome. It's too bad the seamless land-air-space maps shown in the footage won't be in there, since Free Radical owned the rights to the code, and they just went under. Good thing Lucasarts changed it's developers over to Pandemic and Rebellion.

Anyway, has anyone else here heard about this? What do you guys think of it?
