The Fridge / Talent does not Equal Passion
« on: November 14, 2011, 06:36:23 PM »
A good example from real life: I've been drumming for a good few years now, teaching myself and playing along with songs. Ive gotten pretty good at it too, if you'll forgive a little boast. But recently, I've just up and lost the desire to drum. The talent is there, but the passion to use this talent is not.
Similarly, I have been looking at art colleges recently for the next year. One thing I have noticed, somewhat with relief, is that genuine talent is not necessarily what they are looking for. Sure you need to have some talent in the fields they cover, like sculpting, textiles, drawing, etc. But what they are REALLY looking for is a willngness and passion to learn. In fact, one college even told a story about how, when applications and interviews came about, there was a choice between two students: One was an amazing artist, as well as being very confident and full of himself, and the other was a decent artist, who was a little shy but his interview showed that he had a genuine passion for his subject and wanted to learn. The college chose the latter student for the place.

Another good example, though not from real life, is those three little ponies, the Cutie Mark Crusaders. Look at their actions in "The Showstoppers". They each know that they are highly skilled in certain areas (Applebloom being an adept builder and craftspony, Sweetie Belle being an incredible singer, and Scootaloo being highly agile). But none of them embrace these talents for various reasons. Sweetie, wanting to emulate her sister, as well as being shy about singing in public, chooses to work on building the props and costumes for heirupcoming peformane in a talent show. Scootaloo prefers to be the lead singer and songwriter (despite having an atrocious singing voice), leaving Applebloom to be the (clumsy) lead dancer. Now all three fillies worked as hard as they could on their chosen jobs, but because the talent was not there, their performance literally fell to pieces. However, this raises the question: Would it have been better that they put their hearts into delivering a passionate performance incorrectly, or utilising their individual talents and delivering a stunning performance, but without passion?

So for me, I'd say that talent in a subject, and a passion for a subject, are equal. Even if a person is no good at something, as long as they re eager to do it and get better, that's honestly what matters at the end of the day: whether they enjoy it or not.

Wait, wait a second.

In the English release of the Cutie Pox, Apple Bloom speaks French. What will they do for the French and Eastern Canadian releases?
Maybe have her speak in a different dialect of French? I hear they do that sometimes. Do the French have different dialects?

Wait, since when did they change voice actors? I'd have to rewatch the credits to confirm that.

Actually, I've been looking around and as far as I can tell, Scootaloo is still the same VA.

So, today's episode was about what happens when you cheat to get your cutie mark.  Yes, apparently you can cheat in getting it, but there are consequences in doing so.  In this episode, Applebloom finds out about a plant that makes you talented, and from there, it's insanity. :)

Applebloom, just start building something and you'll get that cutie mark.  We all know THAT is where your talent is. ;)

The only thing bothering me about this episode?  The change in Scootaloo's voice.  Seriously, why change her voice actor?  Could the original one not do it anymore for some reason?  I liked the old one better. -_-

In all, good episode for what it was.  I shall await the next one, which is Rainbow Dash-centric. :D
Huh...I honestly didn't notice the change in voice actor for Scoot.

For me, it was a good episode, certainly hilarious, but not the best. It's another one of those episodes that you kinda like the first time, and it then grows on you the more you watch it.
Though I do find the lack of Fluttershy disturbing.

And speaking of fluttershy, prepare for the sweetest little fanfic dub you have ever heard: From "On a Cross and Arrow", the moment when Fluttershy accidentally meets, and gains a crush on, her genderswapped version, Butterscotch.
From "On a Cross and Arrow", the moment when Fluttershy accidentally meets, and gains a crush on, her genderswapped version, Butterscotch. For those of you who don't know, this particular fic's story is that a botched teleportation spell ends up sending the Mane 6 into an alternate, genderswapped, universe. Quick FYI, not all the encounters between the male and female counterparts end in romance.

Fillies and Gentlecolts, I am proud to present, what may be a leaked upcoming song from season 2!

Smile Smile Smile

I've listened to it several times now, and I'm convinced it's authentic.

1. The singer sounds exactly like Pinkie Pie's singing voice. It's far too close to be faked. Or if it is, then give his person an award for best impersonation ever.

2. The backing music sounds just like David Ingram's style. The snare drum, the ukelele, the synths, the backing choir at the end. It all fits.

3. The name at the end, Veronica Dela Cruz, is indeed the name of one of the animators on the show.

EDIT: 4. It has already been taken down from Equestria Daily, which means somebody's asked them to, which probably means that it is real, and leaked without permission.

So, if this is the quality of the songs for this season, we're in for one awesome season!

You smell something burning?

That's the fandom burning in the fires of Non-Canon.

Rarity now has parents.
Dinky's sister is Sparkler (Which means Derpy is BOTH their mother)
Berry Punch's daughter is no longer Pinchy, or Ruby, or what ever you call her, which means ALL those AskPony blogs, FanArt, and FanFiction are now non-canon

It's amazing what a single episode can do to bring down an entire section of Fan Made ideas that we have soon become so used to.
Erm, how exactly does this episode make Ruby Pinch no longer Berry Punch's daughter? As far as I could tell it just gave Berry Punch a little sister as well. In fact, Ruby didn't show up this episode at all...

And Pokeplayer, I reall think yo're lowing he whole "Rarity's parents not dead" thing out of proportion a bit. How does having them alive create a plothole? Why would it make Rarity having her own business a plothole? From what I see, it simply means that Rarity is old enough to live onher own and run her own business, and Sweetie Belle simply lives in Ponyville and visits her often. And I seriously doubt that any other fans will be particularly enraged by the fact that another mane character has determined parents.

Well, I just finished the episode, and qute rankly, I thought it was really good.

Being a Rarity-central episode more than made up for the last of Rarity last episode. The idea of having an episode dedicaed to the many sibling relationships in the series was a good idea, methinks. For me, this story seemed pretty strong, with some good drama and nice sequences. And that moment of Rarity's realisation about Sweetie Belle...Probably the most heartwarming thing I've seen this season.
As for the humour, this was probably one of the funniest episodes so far. Rarity's parents were brilliant (I wouldn't exactly call them Appleoosan, just excessivly American tourist-y) the ending of the sequence with the sheep definitely got a grin out of me, and Granny Smith had me rolling on the floor.

As usual, the animation was lovely, the voice acting was top notch, and the music was great (I especially liked the music playing during the race. It just worked)

As for the background ponies, I am glad that, even though we now know that Dinky and Seafoam are apparently sisters, and Berry Punch and Carrot Top both have little sisters, they've still managed to not mess with determined fanon relationships.

IMO, perhaps the best non-Discord episode this season so far.

Yeah.
It's just so satisfying to meet bronies in real life, isn't it? I've had the fortune to meet a few, as well as havng one of my best friends aparently finally come to grips with liking the show (he was in the denial stage previously)

Been stoked for this episode since I heard about it. I'm not exactly a huge fan of Luna (at least not the fanon Luna), but it will be awesome to inally see her return.

And seeing those preview clips makes it all the more unbearable to wait!

OK, we got Granny Smith finally having a coherent line, an adorable British-accented male foal named Pipsqueak, and Pinkie Pie dressed as a chicken.

And we have Luna making the coolest entrance EVER! With thunder and lightning, descending from the moon in a dark cloak in a gothic chariot pulled by bat-winged pegasi. Not to mention, the triumphant return of Zecora as well!

My theory on why she is making such a dark and spooky entrance is...well, it is NIGHTMARE Night. Maybe she's just in-character.

Well, technically, Incubi and Succubi aren't ncessarily perverted, per se. That's just how they've adapted to survive.

But most of the time, rather than attempting to force themselves on their victims, they more often try to seduce them. (Speaking from experience; I've encountered a succubus before)

So a succubus is a female ghost who tries to seduce you? Is there a way to summon them  :D ?
Not a good idea dude. For onething, they aren't ghosts as in souls of dead people. They are spirits that may once have been human souls but were then corrupted, or naturally occuring succubi.

Also, they have a habit of leaving their victims pretty drained and exhausted after a...*ahem* session. And when they realise that they can get alot of sustenance out of you, they'll just keep coming back for more whether you want it or not.

I'm having a little trouble figuring out my favorite pony.
I'm starting to think it's Rarity. She just cracks me up sometimes ("But I thought you waaanted whiiiining!"), and just appeals to me more.
I love the whole of the mane six, but Rarity ended up being the most interesting.

Discord is my overall favorite character, though. Followed by Princess Celestia, probably.
I'm probably in the same boat. All the mane cast are just so appealing and likeable, it's nigh-on impossible for me to pick one as an absolute favourite.

Though for otherwise characters, it would be a tie between:

Discord- Q in chimera form, with his sinister nature and hammy acting turned up to 11. Need I say anything more?

Celestia- Say what you will about the so-called troll/molester/tyrant. I like her!

Snails- He's obviously Canadian. I'm Canadian. End of.

Derpy- Her fanon is just so sweet and funny, and the voices given to her by fans round her off perfectly.

Dr Whooves- Dr Who as a pony. Nothing more needs to be said.

Lyra- Her actions and behaviours in the series are just hilarious. Just look at the look on her face when a parasprite eats her pie!

Well, on the plus side, it's proved a helpful tool for all sorts of things, such as schoolwork, hobbies, etc. It's helped me expand my horizons endlessly and helped me discover new things I never would have otherwise known about. It's gotte me out of the house, meeting new people and dong things I'd probably never do otherwise.

But then again, it's also removed any semblance of innocence my mind may have ever had.

So don't rule Incubus out just yet, but I'd say it sounds like something else at the moment.

And here's something I just finished thi evening. Seeing as how, being a My Little Pony villain, Discord will probably never get an official toy or model, I just decided to make my own.

So here he is. Everypony's favorite possibly-pandimensional embodiment of chaos

Concerning the Luna episode, my theory is that, while ponies do recognise that she is back to being plain old Princess Luna, they are still a bit apprehensive about welcoming her so soon. After all, she did try to plunge their world into eternal darkness. I doubt that they'd really be quick to forgive it.

Also, havig finally met some other bronies in person, I met one who's currently working on a comic about the origins of Celestia, Luna, and Equestria as a whole. From what he's told me about it it's gonna be pretty awesome. It's chock full of verywell thought out in-universe theories on such things as why she is called Princess Celestia when she is clearly a queen, and why so many things in Equestria seem designed for human use rather than pony use. I don't want to give away anymore to publicly, but if youwant to hear more in detail, give me a PM.

Also, in other news, I now have ordered a Derpy Hooves shirt. My conversion to brony is complete.

Okay, while I wait for the right time to publish my newest chapter of Ever Watching Which, BTW, is now on Equestria daily, currently holding a 4.5 star rating), here is another Lovecraftian short story, The Strange Music of Octavia.

I'm thinking I'll make this an anthology fanfic, with a series of Lovecraftian horror short fics, all tied together somehow. I'm already working on ideas for my third! But I probably won't do that one for at least a week. I still gotta do my newest chapter of Ever Watching.

Speaking of potentily upcomin pony fics, I had the most amazing brainblast today! Warning: shameless self-promotion ahead)

Thinking about my first pony fic, which was essentially a crossover between FiM and The Statement of Randolph Carter, I started wondering: what other Lovecraft stories could I ponify?

Short answer: A lot.

So, I've decided that alongside my Ever Watching fic, I'll be making a sort of anthology series of pony/Lovecraft fics. Kind of along the lines of the Creepshow movies, or the Simpsons Treehouse or Horror episodes. With that, I can announce that my next short story shall be simply entitled "The Strange Music of Octavia".
