Lauren Faust actually came up with a little theory of her own towards Luna and her new look. Basically, when the evil of Nightmare Moon left Luna, her magic was also gone. It left her as weak as a normal earth pony. Since then, she has been regaining her magic and on this particular day, she finally has it all back. The new look basically represents her return to power.

It is only a theory though, but it does help fill a few plot holes.

Still, they'll hopefully explain everything when it airs tomorrow. Don't forget though, you get to sleep in an extra hour.

It could be those and maybe several reasons. She may have had a bit of a growth spurt. As for the mane and tail difference, it may be what you said indeed, or maybe since she had not yet resumed her duties. I wonder if the flowing mane & tail are normal for immortals or another reason.

I wonder if they'll explain or leave it unexplained.
