For those who have never heard of Miep Gies, she was the last surviving helper who hid Anne Frank and family from the Nazis for two years in Amsterdam.  She died today, aged 100 years.  She would've been 101 on February 15th.  Our world has lost yet another heroic soul.  Rest in peace, Miep Gies :cry.

Naturally I've heard of her, didn't hear she had died, though.

Rest in peace, Miep Gies. You'll always play a huge role in dutch history!

Never heard of her, but 100 is a great age to die (unless you're falling apart way before then).  I hope I make it to 100 (again, unless I'm falling apart way before then).

The last of the selfless helpers who risked their lives to protect the lives of the Frank and van Pels family and Mr. Pfeffer is no more :(
Rest in peace Miep Gies. You and the other helpers are a shining example of how the worst times can bring out the best in some people.

Ever more people who lived to see some of the darkest days in the history of the world are passing away and soon it will not be regarded contemporary history anymore. If anyone of you has grandparents or other relatives from these times, talk to them to hear about their histories.

If I had a bugle, I'd play "Taps". Here's to a bold, wonderful lady.

RIP Miep Gies. *salutes*

And Malte, you definitely have a point. I can just imagine in the history umm...articles??? (Who knows if there will be still books in the future. ) having WWII as "ancient history".

While she gratefully accepted the recognition she got for her action she always opposed though to being labeled a heroine. Seeing the great personal risks that she took it is hard to think of her as anything different though.
She was also the one to pick up Anne Frank's diary and keep (not read) it until Anne's father returned as the only survivor. But for Miep Gies the world might have never heard about the fate of Anne Frank which is so easier to relate to than the descriptions of the horrors which go beyond what a human mind can really comprehend.
