I ask Don About LBT Lost Scenes

Last night Don Bluth held a free seminar for members of the DonBluthAnimation.com community (the first and possibly last one that is free)

the seminar was hosted live over the internet, and forum members as well as guests were able to ask questions through the forums or through the IRC chat that was hosted along side of the webcam feed.

I showed Don my artwork and got some decent feedback and I asked him some questions about his work.

One question I decided to ask on behalf of the GoF forums was concerning what became of the lost scenes from the original Land Before Time, and this question I attempted to record via Windows Recorder. The audio was partially garbled but I was able to get small bits and pieces of his response.

He ended this response saying that Stephen Spielberg was the last to have the material from the lost scenes.

I'll try to clean up the audio a bit and post it up here later on.

I cant promise much of it. as I said, when I started recording, the audio of the live feed became garbled at some points and even pauses one or two times.. but you can clearly hear some of the response in between.

And its not a video (that would had killed the recording alltogether!) its a wav file

Anyway, I dont have much time to clean it up, so here it is, unedited. See what you can get out of it

Quite interesting

We did ask Don Bluth repeatedly and the main message in response so far that the scenes were just gone and no longer existing. Now he says:

"I don't even know where they went. I know that all of the drawings, all of the cells, all of the artwork was taken into Steven's hands."

This does not necessarily mean that complete scenes or even the material explicitly mentioned by Mr. Bluth do still exist, but in any case it is not so definite a "no chance" as it has been so far.
Now Steven Spielberg is probably higher on the VIP ladder and difficult to contact and not likely to be particularly interested in a movie he did not even direct himself. Does anyone know if there is any webpage in which questions could be sent to the Mr. Spielberg (not very likely I'm afraid) or to a member of his staff (quite possible as such public relations work has become ever more common through the internet in recent years)?

I've read on another website he does not have a public email address or the like. I guess sending him a letter would be an option.

we could always spam the fan-mail box address in the second link of Mumbling's post and hope that one of our letters make it.

when I did ask the question on the IRC chat, Don's partner on that website jokingly said that the lost scenes were floating around E-Bay

Spielberg was executive producer which means he helped bankroll the movie, so he must have those deleted scenes locked away very carefully. But I thought Universal owned the copyright (and all that goes with it) for Land Before Time.

LBT's 25th anniversary is in 3 years and it would be wonderful if ol' Steve could give up some -- or all! -- of those edited scenes, maybe some rough animation or storyboards. Even Disney knows not to throw away what doesn't make it on screen. It's history FCOL. Wonder of Spielberg has Twitter so we can bombard him with endless tweets.

Maybe he keeps them so only he along can enjoy them. Knowing no one else will ever see it but him.

To be honest, I doubt that. Someone keeping scenes out of the movie for the sole purpose of being the only one to enjoy them does not sound very professional to me.

Also I think that of all the movies Mr. Spielberg was involved with "the land before time" will be fairly low on the list of movies to pay special attention to nowadays. The problem I think isn't malice but disinterest on the part of Mr. Spielberg.

Well, if Spielberg has the footage, we're never going to see it. It's as simple as that.

Oh, just accept it already. It's been over twenty years, the project resulted in endless aguments between Spielberg and Lucas's side and Bluth's and it left a bad taste in all their mouths. Bluth is likely the only one left who cares who actually works in the film business. We are never going to see that footage.

Like I said, it is not likely that we ever will. In that respect I have no illusions. However, impossible is only what, no matter the effort, can never ever be achieved. If someone is willing to invest a lot of effort that would increase the chance (though it would still remain very unlikely). The first step to do something "totally impossible" is to give it a try and where the general possibility exists and the worst that could happen is a waste of time and effort there is no reason to abandon all hopes and efforts for those who are willing to invest the later.

I don't think anybody even said they were going to star a petition or anything. I think Malte is only trying to say that you can't say something is impossible unless you are told otherwise by the source or if you try and then are told otherwise.

I agree that this is very unlikely to happen, mainly because The Land Before Time does not have the interest of people that it did 10 years ago per say. However, it truly would be a treat if the deleted scenes were added in the 25th anniversary edition of the movie. When you think about, something is always added or edited in an anniversary edition of a movie, whether it be remastered picture quality or interviews from the crew.

Of course, younger audiences would probably not find as much meaning to the deleted scenes as we would because they never knew about them. Then again, it doesn't hurt to hope.
