Attic Treasures / Favourite Authors?
« on: August 17, 2011, 07:15:29 PM »
I suppose it would be a lie to say that I don't have a favourite author.  I do tend to read and actively search for specific authors when I go to the book store.  Yet I suppose liking books isn't really to do with the author names in themselves, although I am quite familiar that they did come up with the various concepts that are required when writing literature.  But I just mainly read anything.  Reading is always good for the mind.  And that isn't generally intellectually either.  But it's a good way to chill and imagine.  Which makes me sound completely blow-hearted and odd  :lol so...

Favourite authors:
- Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; For Crime.
-Tolkien, Rowling, Fiest, Dart-Thornton, Stroud and Nix; For Fantasy.
-Gemmell and Marillier; for Historical Fantasy.
-Saylor, Igguldon (Sp?), Pressfield and Cornwell; for historical.
-Stoker, Melville, Shaw, Homer, Hornby, Austen, Bronte, Suetonius, Plutarch, Juvenal.

:lol that's in book order on my shelf too!

What about you?

Silver Screen / AnimÈ
« on: June 18, 2011, 11:59:27 AM »
Well since I have already asked a similar question in regards to Manga, I thought perhaps it might have been a good idea to start a 'sister' topic on AnimÈ.

Whilst not everyone will enjoy AnimÈ or Manga for whatever reasons, I have found that by discussing certain series with people that there are always the possibility to be introduced with new series.  If any of that makes sense.:p

Sometimes though I do not like the AnimÈ from the Manga series such as Death Note but sometimes the series is much better panned out than the Manga.

Back in the 90's there were such AnimÈ shows like PokÈmon (which is still around but personally there are too many PokÈmon to keep track of), Beyblade and Digimon (although I didn't get into Digimon that much).

My sister who is a massive fan of AnimÈ and Manga introduced me to further AnimÈ shows and the subsequent Manga as well.

So far on her insistance I've watched Soul Eater (Yay!:D), High School of the Dead (I think it is called that?), Loveless (but it wasn't really something that I go the concept of), Hellsing and finally Blue Exorcist; which is pretty awesome so far.  She has showed me others but I haven't watched that many episodes of them since I didn't like them.:p

What about you?

The Fridge / Zodiac signs
« on: May 18, 2011, 12:27:49 PM »
I follow a blog thing that lists Zodiac facts.  Some of them are surprisingly er scary in concidence others are like lol what?  Anyway, some people put a great deal of importance in these zodiac sign facts and allow what is characteristic to define them as a whole.

So I am interested in what you think (I'm on a break from revision.:p), do you follow zodiac signs to a 'T' or do you believe them to be fanciful notions?

Oh and my Zodiac sign is the Pisces.:p

Attic Treasures / Do you read Manga?
« on: May 16, 2011, 06:58:17 PM »
Yep, just like it says in the topic title: do you read Manga?
What sort of manga do you like?

I was quite skeptical at first since reading manga was not something that I was interested or felt to read, but after months of pestering from my sibling I gave in, mainly to shut her up  :lol  and read Death Note.  That was okay until they killed off the bes character of the series.:(

I am ashamed to admit that I have read World of Warcraft manga but they were pretty interesting, so perhaps it is not really shameful.:p

And finally I have finished the last volume of Return to the Labyrinth.  Too much of Toby and some minor characters but it is nice that the editors kept Jareth's character.

The Fridge / Profiles
« on: May 13, 2011, 07:28:09 PM »
Random question, I have a boredom problem....
Anyway, does anyone actually read or view profiles?
I do so on occasion but often times, I don't bother.

« on: May 13, 2011, 06:14:13 PM »
I have looked to see if there is a thread and surprisingly there isn't.

Anyway, does anyone like either (or both) the Simpsons or Futurama?
Who are your favourite characters?
What is your favourite episode?
What do you think of the newer season(s)?

Sound Off! / Do animals like music?
« on: May 10, 2011, 07:07:39 PM »
Not quite sure where to put this but considering that it is on music, I thought it was apt to put it here.

I have noticed this before with Mozart but considered that since Mozart is not entirely typical, I was surprised that my aunt's cat; Dave likes music.

He likes David Bowie..:D

Mozart on the other hand likes amy's music: Paramore and Tokio Hotel.

The Fridge / Comedy
« on: May 10, 2011, 06:07:32 PM »
Comedy?  What is this comedy you speaketh of Saft?

I do like comedy as much as the next person.  Sometimes though I do not fully appreciate or 'get' the humour but over all I rather watch it than other 'alternatives'.

Are there any comedians that you like?
I like:

Oh warning, some language may be offensive...it is typical english humour...sarcastic and ironic...
Michael McIntyre

Russell Howard

I apologize if the links do not work in your area.  Youtube always has alternatives so just search yourself if you are interested.:p

Please provide links...so that people do know who you are talking about.

The Fridge / The value of honesty
« on: May 06, 2011, 07:25:28 PM »
Please excuse me if I come across as cynical in this post.  I'm quite angry over something at the moment.  However, I wanted to ask you guys (since you guys are just awesome with this type of thing) what you guys think about the importance of honesty.

Do you value honesty as a whole?  Is there such a thing as being too harsh in telling the truth?  Should you sugar-coat the truth so it doesn't come across as harsh?  Is honesty always appreciated?  Or should you just always lie?

I just don't get it.  I always try to be honest, yet sometimes it isn't welcome.   Does that mean I have to lie because being honest even though it is harsh and blunt isn't welcome?

The Fridge / On the topic of Zoos
« on: May 06, 2011, 04:19:04 PM »
One of the more interesting conversations that I have had in the past was on the topic of zoos.  Not merely the enjoyment of going to a zoo and seeing all the awesome animals of nature but the essential nature of zoos.  Are zoos a benefit for animals and humans alike?  In what way could the zoo environment be improved do you feel?  Do you feel as though zoos should be totally closed down and the animals that are in the zoos should be released into the wild?

:lol  I apologise for that many questions.  It is just a few points to focus on for the time being.

Personally, I am split in my opinion of the essential aspect of the zoo enviornment.  In some form, zoos are a benefit for both animals and humans.  Humans can have the opportunity to explore and understand the nature of the variety of creatures that we share the Earth with, without all the population having to rely on text books or going into the animal's natural environments.

Animals too, especially those who are on the endangered species list benefit by having a chance to improve their disminishing numbers and narrowly avoid extinction of their species, through an extended breeding programme then attempts would be made by the zoos to either release the new generation to a controlled environment in the 'wild' or broaden the gene pool of the captivity animals (think the Giant Panda).

Yet, there are some zoos were their enclosures are appalling in the living conditions.  There is no animal enrichment and the animals are often poorly treated.  This has to change.  I don't feel that zoos should be totally closed down as zoos do play a vital role (again the panda example) but we should not rely on zoos to preserve the animals in their natural habitats.

We should do as much as possible to preserve conservation and support the wild gene pool whilst at the same time increasing the likely survival of declining species through the conservation work that takes place in the zoos.

After all, it is our own fault that these animals are declining.

Silver Screen / Labyrinth
« on: May 05, 2011, 07:23:54 PM »
During the later 80's film studios began to delve into the realms of live action fantasy.  You would get films like Ladyhawke, Legend and even the Dark Crystal.  One of the films which was the last of Jim henson made was Labyrinth.

If you haven't seen this film...you haven't lived.

It may not be the best film...in comparison to some recent films but it was still good fun especially the songs; Magic Dance, As the World falls down, Within You and Underground.  All sang by David Bowie who also played the Goblin King.

I think a lot of girls wished to be Sarah....I mean I myself even tried to wish away random items just to get the Goblin King to appear ...but he didn't.

Anyway has anyone else seen this?:)

Attic Treasures / Do you re-read books?
« on: May 05, 2011, 06:51:34 PM »
Simple question...but do you re-read books? How often?  And any particular books that you tend to re-read more than once?

I definetly re-read books.  As often as I possibly can, I do a sort of loop with the books. I re-read LOTR annually, it is a sort of tradition.  There are other books too but they aren't a traditional thing.

Attic Treasures / Raymond E.Feist
« on: May 05, 2011, 06:43:54 PM »
Recently begun to re-read (since I do re-read books) Magician of Feist's Riftwar saga.  I actually prefer the first book compared to the other two.  Haven't read any of his other books.

Has anyone else read any of his books?  Would you want to?  They are fantasy.... :smile

History Section / What is your favourite Mythology?
« on: May 04, 2011, 11:29:43 AM »
Yeah...I know, this topic has no substance.  It is just a simple matter of curiosity.

What is your favourite mythology?

My own answer is rather complex as I enjoy most mythologies.  My primary 'areas of expertise' (if you will) are Egyptian, Greek and Roman mythology.

You?

The Fridge / How would you define Art theft?
« on: April 18, 2011, 04:24:19 PM »
Simple question:
How would you define Art theft?
Where would you draw the 'line'?  (as in what do you think is art theft and what is not)

Inspired to some degree to some lack-luster drama going on over on TLKFAA.  There is always something.  And whilst it is slighly amusing to some degree to see some idiot causing a problem with what they feel is right when they are so utterly wrong...(yeah, I know...it doesn't sound nice the way i have put it...sorry) but it is deeply unfair to the person that the attack is being centred around at.

Personally, I define art theft as a person 'stealing' a work of art and claiming it as their own.

Tracing is borderline but not too severe.  And as for free hand...seriously, it's not that much of a big deal.

The Fridge / Favourite subject(s)?
« on: March 08, 2011, 02:47:12 PM »
General question inspired by a thread on another forum.
What is/are your favourite subject(s)?  (Either at school or university)

No prizes for guessing what mine is.;)

Although...if you don't know that then it's actually ancient history, hence why I'm doing archaeology and classical civilizations at joint hons. at uni.

I used to also like science, especially biology (environmental biology).:D

Oh, and you can't say that you don't like a subject.  Everyone has some sort of like in school or at university.  So... :nyah

( I wonder who likes History? :angel )

The Fridge / Mobile/Cell Phones
« on: March 08, 2011, 01:27:29 PM »
See when I'm in a relatively 'good' mood I tend to post or make threads...:p

Anyway, before I was contemplating my mobile phone and how rarely I actually use it.  I also was contemplating how things have changed, how there are children who have mobile phones before they even start start secondary school (school between 11-16/18), so they are younger.  When, I was a kid, I didn't even have a phone till I was around sixteen and even then I didn't even know how to use it.  Which is highly  :oops  now when the same kids already know how to text message, record films and take pictures (and even access the internet etc) and they are half your age or even less...  And I'm only twenty.   I have no idea how to really work my phone, I know how to call people and as for texting well.... ...give me email anyday, yet from my observations of people at university the majority of people use their phones all the time to text about important dates.  An example of this is the group project work that i'm doing.  The others had communicated through text messages and not responded to my emails... only to say, when i asked them, that they prefered text.... :bang

So my question is to you: How often do you use your mobile phone?  Do you even have a mobile phone?  Do you know how to use it?

The Fridge / Filling out forms?
« on: March 01, 2011, 05:13:51 PM »
I find it hard to fill out forms.
I do not know how to fill it out properly, despite direction like:

Section 1- Your details
First name

Etc...

Despite the direction it's just confusing and I need help when it comes to it.  It makes me feel very inferior when I have to have help to fill out forms, while others can just fill them out with no problem.

I was just wondering if other people have the same issues or have had similiar issues.  And if the latter, how were you able to overcome it?  Are there any 'tips' that you can give?
 :bang

The Fridge / What is your favourite chocolate?
« on: February 24, 2011, 10:24:07 PM »
:lol   If we can have a cheese based question we can definetly have a chocolate based question.  Take it as a companion thread, especially since at home both substances are world reknowned for their cheese and chocolate.  Plus also I can't sleep, don't dare to so I have to do something with my time. <_<

So favourite chocolate?

I like white but then again that isn't technically chocolate as it hasn't got it in!:P

And to be normal I suppose, I do like Milk chocolate but not to the great extent as my chocoholic sister. :smile
