Little Foot and Ali romantically works on a chemistry level, but not on a story level. Ali, like Little Foot's father Bron, migrates and is Bedouin like, while Little Foot prefers the safety and security of The Great Valley. This I think hampers the relationship. I however, have not seen the episode of the LBT Series where Ali appears.
As for a series aimed at teenagers. The demographic barrier is that dinosaur enthusiasts are usually kids, and then adults who couldn't shirk their love for them and become Paleontologists. The closest a teen gets to dinosaurs is probably Jurassic World and the rest of Jurassic Park franchise. Its not that dinosaurs aren't cool, its that animated dinosaurs (though we love them) aren't going to appeal to teens same way they do to kids. Then again I could be wrong, I just think that The Land Before Time wouldn't work in a teenage spin off or even adult spin off, the reason is innocence, the franchise is fueled on innocent characters like Ducky, Spike, and Petrie, even Little Foot has lots of innocence and purity, Cera, well she is the most teen like of the Gang.
In the Original, Sharptooth is suppose to represent Satan allegorically. Little Foot is Moses, the Tree Star (Star of David), the Great Valley (The Promise Land), and the fact Sharptooth is drowned in water just as Egyptians were at Red Sea during the Exodus all fits. So yes in continuum of the Original Film, he is supernatural, but in the sequels not so much.
Great idea for a thread. I personally think Little Foot wanted to befriend and raise Chomper as means of healing his own heart over what happened to his mother. Little Foot doesn't hold grudges, if anyone should be prejudiced against Sharpteeth it would be Little Foot, but in point of fact he is the least upset over Chomper and wants to keep him in the Great Valley. Could it be that Little Foot's bond with Chomper is some kind of way he is holding on to his mother? I am going psychological here, but bear with me, by being a close friend to Chomper could Little Foot be dealing with the loss of his mother to a Sharptooth?
I concur about the guilty pleasure bit. It's easy to say to someone, (these are just examples, not mine) I am fan of Star Wars, or I am a fan of a television series, but say The Land Before Time, and generally the response will either be, "huh?" or laughter because they expect children to be viewers. I happen to adore the LBT franchise because of the characters, stories, adventures, silly vernacular "earth shake" and more. Too many memories to count, but trying to share them except for here, is almost impossible to do. :unsure:
I would vote for Chomper, he can communicate with Sharpteeth, which since the Gang of Five always encounters Sharpteeth, Chomper's linguistic skills could save the Gang from having to run and hide so much. For example, in LBXIV, had Chomper been with the Gang, he could have either distracted the Feathered Sharpteeth or convinced them to move along (granted they comply, the Allosaurus in LBTV did not comply).
In my opinion, the end of LBTXIV basically indicates its going to be The Gang of Seven, with Chomper and Ruby joining the pack. My concern about this is that with so many characters the amount of time spend on each individual character will be less, and it is the original Gang of Five that has been through every adventure together since the Original Film; it is them that we have connection and catharsis with. Chomper in contrast to Ruby, has more history with the Gang, he being in LBII and V, and the series makes him more of regular than Ruby.
Sharpteeth speak a different language because they represent a different culture, one of violence and hunting. Just as Romans spoke Latin and Italino, the Barbarians spoke their native dialects such as German and Gaelic. It is possible that the Sharpteeth do not communicate in Leaf Eater Language because a) they do not understand it or b) because Leaf Eater's are their prey, and food source, they don't want to communicate and grow attached like Chomper did. Let's take for example carnivore humans, if someone eats cow, chicken, and pork, they probably wouldn't want to be able to speak Moo, chicken, and Oink, because then the creature that a person is going to feast on could talk to you prior to killing it, in fact this happened on a series on HGTV, a chicken starting screaming "help me!" At least that is how it sound, and let me say, it doesn't make you want to eat chicken when you understand the chicken language.
The fact LBII added musical numbers (love them or hate them, I love them) made this installment immediately distanced from the original. With that in mind, it is not surprising the writers endeavored to tone down the independence and self sufficiency of the Gang. I think because the original is gritty, darker, and frankly allegorical of the Exodus, the writers of LBII and subsequent installments wanted to emphasize that the Gang is still kids. There is a case that can be made for the fact that the Gang survived and proved their resolve in Original because they had no other choice, they were forced by circumstances, being cut off from their herd and kin, earth shake, famine, and Sharptooth. In LBII Little Foot and the rest of the Gang are making a choice to venture in the Mysterious Beyond to prove a point rather than being pushed by the aforementioned circumstances. In a way, the Gang heading into the Mysterious Beyond in LBII is much weaker in substance, they know their parents and grandparents will take notice they are missing for too long, and can come to their aid, while in the Original the Gang is completely cut off from the adults and must face everything alone, with no one to know they are alive; while in contrast LBII Gang knows that their kin will worry about them and come look for them (example LBXIV).
LBII while seeming more childish, isn't half bad. The theme is being big kids now, Chomper being the case and point proof that they can raise a child themselves, actually works because the adults don't trust the kids and treat them as "babies." The whole movie in essence is addressing what Weird Raptor stated, these kids have been through hostile experiances and can take care of themselves, LBII is the kids trying to prove this to adults who still don't quite get what the Gang went through in the Original LB.

The Great Valley being a haven and hub from which the Gang of Five goes forth on adventures works well. But your idea is intriguing, in a way it would be like Bron's migrating herd, and if Little Foot had joined either Ali's herd or Bron's herd the series or films would have probably become not to dissimilar to what you've proposed as a possibility.

I would like to see more interactions between Petrie and Chomper. Generally, Petrie is with Ducky and Spike, and when they are split up, with Cera. Little Foot is one that tends to be alone in those situations, examples LBT II and LBT: Journey of the Brave. Chomper most interacted with Petrie in LBT II, and then he couldn't communicate yet being a new hatchling.
I think its the legs. Little Foot's are quite long and so can be folded tightly to make himself a tower to enter a narrow place, while Cera's legs are close to his belly and full torso, thus she has less maneuverability and can't squeeze her body into a thinner shape like Little Foot.
The LBT IV is by far one of my favorites. The plot device that is used in most LBT films is a need to go into the perilous Mysterious Beyond to save a loved one, in this case Grandpa Longneck, or even the entire Great Valley herd is simple but effective for the ensuing adventure. Journey Through Mists does this device best, it has the heartfelt element, Little Foot's Grandpa who is his father figure until LBT X (do I need to worry about spoilers?), and a new friend as the guide Ali. Of course there is obvious lesson about racial acceptance, and learning to trust those different then what we are familiar with. The weakest element I felt was sharpteeth, while a breath of fresh air in the sense of not being mindless eating machine or as Dr. Alan Grant put it in JPIII, "Genetically Engineered Theme Park Monsters", I didn't find Ichy and Dil particularly charming or enjoyable to watch.
The "Night flowers" acting as holy grail was a nice touch.
"The Time of Great Giving" does address something very serious in our times, water shortage and rationing. For those in USA, this is a perfect entry for Thanksgiving. But perhaps what I found most memorable was homage to the success of Jurassic Park, i.e. Velociraptors (really Utahraptor and Dienonychus), hence their presence as sharpteeth at climax of the film. In my opinion this film flushed out Topsy or Mr. Threehorn more, and the escape from fire is rather fraught with emotion.
As for Hip and his crew, the point was definitely to teach children about bullying. It is these messages amongst adventure and lovable characters that makes The Land Before Time endure.
Probably around 2018 or 2019. I am estimating based on the gap between "The Wisdom of Friends" and "Journey of the Brave." I think it would be grand if a company like Netflix or Amazon.com funded Land Before Times films, it would be similar to how Netflix took over "VeggieTales." Then potentially we could have a film every year, and perhaps another series.
