No Doug Walker knows what he's talking about when he reviews god awful movies that need to be ripped apart. He has a brain and I like his reviews he does. So keep your negative opinions to yourself next time.
For the record ADFan, everyone is entitled to their opinions and to declare them (as opinions rather than stating them like undeniable facts). It is not up to you or anyone else to order anyone here to keep any opinions to themselves. Such attitute is in conflict with the board rules and can lead to sanctions if repeated after such a warning :anger
Quote
Between the declarations of piracy and now this, is there a reason ADFan is still here?
For the selfsame reason that other GOF members are still around after having repeatedly put a toe across the line.
Nobody should mistake the lenience of the admins as ignorance. We still got the banhammer if nothing else is working, but we are sticking to the rules which we impose not just on others but on ourselves as well and don't go around banning people just because some others might dislike them but only on the basis of the board rules.

That being said, everyone remember to keep the difference between fact and opinion in mind and treat others with the same respect you want to be given (in case you don't want to be met with respect, treat others respectfully anyway!) and everyone should be fine.

General Land Before Time / I FINALLY saw LBT XI.
« on: June 16, 2016, 07:47:43 PM »
I suppose back then in 2005 I was mostly relieved that I didn't find LBT XI as bad as LBT X (I have stated my reasons why I detest Bron in the LBT X thread, but I don't mean to argue about him since it is far from my mind to try to "convert" anyone who could enjoy LBT X more than I did).
There was a lot that could and should have been better in LBT XI (some information on the fate of Cera's mother, a better explanation for the obsession of the adults (I'm sure with a little creativity it would have been possible to come up with a plot in which the tinysaurs were perceived as an actual threat giving a little more credibility to the adults actions), sharpteeth that came across as more of a threat etc. I still consider LBT XI a weak but not horribly bad LBT movie.

PS: It is very nice to see such old threads being brought back from obscurity :)

General Land Before Time / Journey of the Brave (LBT 14)

Fair point, Dinotopia: Quest For The Ruby Sunstone was really a very poor movie, especially when comparing it to the marvelous books Dinotopia is based on. It is a pity that movie makers tend to approach Dinotopia with a desire to turn it into an extreme action / magic story rather than presenting the marvelous world imagined by James Gurney (the author of the Dinotopia books).
The Dinotopia mini-series made the same mistakes (along with some very poor acting) while the series that followed the mini-series was quite decent, corrected many mistakes committed by the mini-series and came up with some original own ideas without distorting Dinotopia beyond all recognition. Sadly that series was cancelled on a cliffhanger.
Anyway, I am getting off topic here.

Please make sure to keep opinions and facts clearly separated and also to give some reasons for your opinions.
Just stating that something is crap doens't give much to talk about. Saying what you dislike and why gives a chance for discussion. We do not endorse mere rage venting in discussion threads.

Land Before Time TV Series (2007) / Did the series get a good finale?

The show was awful god awful to be frank. Each episode was hard to sit through.
I'm sorry it was so bad for you ADFan185.
I got to say that for all my criticism about the later movies I found the LBT TV-series better than many others and better than I had expected it to become.
Serving the plans to revive elder threads as suggested in the rock circle, here is a link to my old thread on behalf of the TV-series.

General Land Before Time / Journey of the Brave (LBT 14)
« on: June 02, 2016, 08:51:28 AM »
Lackluster is indeed a good term to describe this movie. It is by now five weeks ago that I watched it, but there was nothing really to see that would have been particularly motivating to write about it.
Watching the movie I cannot help but feeling that the makers of the movies themselves are utterly unenthusiastic about what they are making and it shows. You get hardly any sense of passion, enthusiasm or creativity from the movie.
There were a few interesting moments (quarrel among the group, Petrie suddenly finding himself in a sudden position of adoration (reminiscent of Sith in Ice Age II), or the journey on an underground river), but none of them seemed to be really exploited by the makers of the movie.
I'm also not sure if it is just me or if others too have the impression that the language is shifting towards and even younger audience? I mean not just how they say things (personally I like Petries language and Ducky's way of talking as characteristic features) but rather what they are saying. I repeatedly had the impression of them talking in a captain obvioius kind of manner like the audience was in need of explanations for rather obvious things. Also the way Spike was acting and being treated by others seemed a bit like he was developing back to toddlerdom. True, there have been idiot moments of Spike before (don't eat the vine you are standing on), but I would prefer to have Spike as the gentle, and good natured, loyal and (if necessary) determined friend as whom he was depicted in LBT 4 for example.
The sharpteeth in this movie were once again conveniently stupid, leaving the kids all the time they needed to set up traps that wouldn't work if we assumed even mediocre intelligence or plausible strength. It is true that the sense of thread has long been abandoned when it comes to sharpteeth (I think the swimming sharptooth in LBT 9 was the last we got that (in spite of Moes antics) came across as more than a toy for the kids).
Last but not least, Bron came across as a bit of a... whatever once again. We never got any indication whatsoever that big, strong longneck he is supposed to be, he even bothered to try at least to work himself out from under that rock rather than just waiting to be saved or to die. In a constant dripping wears away the stone kind of procedure he might have tried something at least. I appreciate the effect of leverage, but the kids accomplishing in a matter of moments what the much stronger Bron couldn't even in days is much of a stretch.
Above all (and this really bothered me most I think) there is an extreme incoherence in the movie. It is emphasized how very much the herd needed Bron and that he must abandon his son because his herd was so utterly depending on him.
Not only did the herd move on to the valley without any troubles, but they didn't seem to be in any way disorganized, desperate or in any other way even mildly distressed about the loss of their leader. Heck the rather unimpressive new characters of the movie didn't bother to help him or ask for help but had to be reminded of respectively be forced into the realization that perhaps it would be sensible thing to try to save their leader. This total indifference really goes to show that his heard neither needs nor cares about Bron. After they have given him the bird the way they did I really don't see what in the wide world would keep Bron obliged to play the leader for a herd that neither needs nor bothers about him.

You denounce a few things about the movie but can you tell me what they could/should have done instead?

Let's start with the volcano. Do you have an alternate idea how the gang could get up that mountain quick in order to be there prior to Pterano, Rinkus and Sierra (who could have been there within an hour but what would the movie have to gain from them being there a day before the gang even arrive there?
I would have changed the plot in such a way that the Pterano would still require some information from Littlefoot or one of the others to find the stone (or some additional information on what exactly its alleged powers were or how to unleash them). Such a simple change would correct the logic flaw of why the flyers weren't able to get to the stone first.
Such a plot could even give Pterano a reason to abduct Ducky. Forcing the other kids to follow them so he could get more information from them in the Mysterious Beyond rather than in the Valley under the watchful eyes of the kids parents.
If Pterano abducted Ducky more silently (without causing an all out stampede in the Valley) a plot would have been possible in which only Petrie realized that Ducky was abducted by his uncle. Not only would that have caused another conflict of conscience for Petrie but it would even have corrected the major flaw of Pterano's deliberately provoking the adults into persecuting him (perhaps he could have given Petrie a "follow me on your own without the parents!" kind of message).

The idea (of the Rainbowfaces who are interesting characters!) is actually quite cool. Remember this is made for kids, not for our small group of adult fans.
I agree they were interesting, but the Star Trek beaming in the end seemed really ill fitting to me. Had they been kept more mysterious (similar to Doc) I think it would have been more impressive. This is of course a matter of personal taste and I think I am pretty much alone with the view that Star Trek, gore, science fiction technology etc. got no business in the land before time.
Quote
Strange colouring... okay I get that it shouldn't look like that but seriously what is so bad about that?
Again a matter of taste. Personally I think a volcano spewing something like spinach is something in need of improvement. If you don't feel that need I am certainly not out to convince you others, I am certainly not out to talk you into having a problem with it.

You're complaining about deus ex machina solutions? Well, they're everywhere in movies, you know?
True and wrong at the same time.
There are plenty of situations of last minute saves. But most of the time they had been built up and were not something that could have happened all along (like it would have been the most natural matter of course things imaginary for the adult flyers of the valley to go after Pterano after he abducted Ducky). In LBT 6 we see grandpa to the rescue brought there by Littlefoot's friends and Doc's previous farewell also made his appearance plausible.
LBT 5 perhaps had the extremest case of Deus ex machina in the form of Elzy's sudden appearance. But while that was not an elegant solution it was at least something that could possibly happen. A flyer capable of carrying Littlefoot, Cera and Spike is just a lazy excuse. I agree that one shouldn't apply too extreme logic on land before time movies. But I still think there is a difference between bending plausibility a little and making up something outright impossible defying all logic. If you think different, that is fine and I am not trying to convince you otherwise. Personally I want a good story to like rather than so much wishing to like a story that I don't require for it to be good anymore.

Nobody knew if the Stone had the powers it was predicted to have but I'm sure the grown-ups wouldn't just let Pterano gain that possible power. Even if it's just non-sense (as it turned out later on), could they risk that Pterano might gain huge power in the event that their doubts turn out to be false?
As I already wrote in your other thread the makers of LBT 7 had taken extreme efforts to establish that the adults in the Valley didn't believe in the stone of Cold Fire. They even had Cera's father repeat that after "Beyond the Mysterious beyond" to make sure that it was perfectly clear that the rainbow faces didn't convince anyone. If that is still not enough to convince you that the adults in the Valley didn't care at all about the stone the fact that they didn't hurry to prevent the flyers from reaching it. The alleged powers of the stone didn't play much of a role in the adults discussion.
It would have been odd enough if those powers had played a role, because it has never ever actually been specified what exactly that stone was supposed to do. There is absolutely no reason for Pterano to believe that the stone would allow for him to dominate or controll anyone at all (which I consider another major plothole of LBT 7).
In spite of all that, I do not hate LBT 7, but I thought it a great pity that some good ideas were largely wasted due to flaws such as those mentioned above.

General Land Before Time / Ducky's abduction in LBT 7
« on: May 31, 2016, 02:29:07 PM »
Keep in mind that prior to the abduction of Ducky there had already been a meeting of the grownups in which they all agreed that there wasn't such a thing as a stone of cold fire. They were very clear about not believing that the stone was real which caused the Rainbow Faces to question them for it without any sign whatsoever that they had changed anybody's mind.
Other than the rainbow faces there is not an adult there who seems to believe Littlefoot and whatever the exact powers of the stone are supposed to be is not very clearly defined (in fact it is a good question why Pterano would think that it would give him power over the others when nothing like that had been suggested by anyone at all).
And even if Ducky had told the others about it, how would that have sabotaged Pterano's plans in any way more than abducting Ducky did?
Had they made sure that nobody was woken up by keeping Ducky silent leaving everyone uncertain about what happened to her, it would have made sense, but the way they proceeded they caused a stampede in the Valley when their point was not to draw any attention!

Given the big point they made of showing that the adults didn't believe in the stone of cold fire I have to maintain my view that the abduction of Ducky is either a plothole or showing that Pterano is kind of stupid (which I don't think matches his character well).

Aye, it is such details along with some improbable solutions (e.g. using a volcano as an elevator), illogical timing (e.g. these flyers seriously didn't reach that volcano in the time it took the kids to get there even though the flyers had a lead of like half a night and half a day), strange coloring (e.g. green lava), deus ex machina solutions (e.g. Star Trek Rainbowfaces) and serious plotholes (why exactly did they abduct Ducky to begin with? They had absolutely no reason whatsoever to do that. Had Pterano announced to the assembled adults in the valley that he was going for the stone of cold fire to rule them all he probably would have earned himself a collective shrug and an "be off already" from Cera's father. Abducting Ducky was really the one way to ensure that he would be pursued eventually) are aspects that kept a movie with some really great ideas (e.g. Pterano's past) from being great altogether in my opinion.

I disagree. Perhaps it is a benefit of having become a bronie at a later time than you, but on the other hand I have come to know many long time bronies who agree that the makers of the series continue to show the degree of enthusiasm for their work and for what they are doing that is reflected in the quality of the show (unlike in case of LBT 14 where I couldn't help but feeling that the makers of the movies just didn't care about LBT at all and just saw it as a job). MLP has always been a cash grap. It was the point for a series with the aim to sell Hasbro toys. However, the makers of the show sure do something for their money and the love for the show I see from so many of the bronies I know is not lessened by the economic basis for the show.
I too was (and still am to some degree) a sceptic about starlight glimmer and I do hope that she won't become as frequent and permanent an addition to necessiate a term along the lines of "Mane7" or so. However, what we did see of her so far in the sixth season seemed interesting to me. In the last episode she repeatedly showed a kind of deadpan humor about her past which I found quite amusing. Moreover the presence of Starlight allows for Twilight to appear in a new role, that of a teacher and in this role end up in the kind of "testing stress" situations so typical for Twilight (while trying to prove to Celestia that she is a good teacher). Admittedly, it was over the top for her in the last episode, but I do see a lot of potential there.
The bronie fandom as I am experiencing it these days (very much looking forward to a meetup on Saturday) is vibrant, creative and mostly very friendly :yes
I feel sorry for you that it you no longer experience it the same way.
