Title: 2010 Winter Olympics
Post by: The Chronicler on February 12, 2010, 03:23:03 PM
The opening ceremony for the Olympics will be in a few hours, so I decided to start this topic for everyone to discuss the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

At the moment, the only thing I'm interested in is which countries will be in this year's winter Olympics.

Are some boycotting the Olympics, as some have done before?

I'm a casual winter Olympic fan but I do love to watch figure skating and skiiing. A skating couple representing France trained here Indianapolis (my hometown) so I'm anxious to see them perform.  One event I never miss is the luge, but with what happened today I think I'll take a pass. That's a very dangerous sport as we've seen today. RIP Nodar. :cry  News Story (http://tinyurl.com/yzrqs8d)

Okay, going away from that sad story, I am surprised to find that some of the countries have only 1 athlete competing for them this year.  That's a lot of weight on their shoulders.  I wish them the best of luck.

Of course, with me being an American, it's USA all the way for me. :)

Jamaica is one of those that only has one this year. (And it's for skiing of all events.)

As for Sri Lanka, not competing this year. -_-

Here's a site with all the athletes competing this year.

I'm not watching this one very closely unless something big happens with the American team in a major event. Barring another miracle on ice, I probably won't care too much for the winter Olympics this time around.

I'm more of a fan of the Summer Olympics but hey, if the events are on I'd probably watch it. Beats the hell out of watching the Rugby Six Nations and having overweight Guiness bingers screaming at the TV :lol  :p Didn't realise that there were so many Brits entering this year. Well, in all honesty, the amount of snow we've had recently, I suppose it's made practicing for the Winter Games a lot easier!  :lol

I may take glances at this now and then....especially if New Zealand is in it, but if not, eh, not as much, but it could be interesting.

It also depends if one of the tv stations here will cover it or not too.

I feel bad for the Georgian guy that died in the final training, he was only 21 years! Most of you guys are already older than that.. really sad.

Wait, someone died?  Man, that must suck, and only at 21 years of age too, a year younger than I am.

Yes someone died right in front of the opening ceremony, I don't know his name though.

This should give you more information about that accident:
http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/vancouver...ov=ap&type=lgns (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/vancouver/luge/news?slug=ap-lug-lugerdies&prov=ap&type=lgns)

I watched the entire opening ceremony last night, and there were some parts I found rather interesting. This article mentions some of the best moments:

Of all the things that could have had technical problems, it had to happen at the rising of the cauldron. :lol

no, but Apollo Anton Ohno won his 6th medal in the 1500 which tied Bonnie Blair for the most medals by an American in the Winter Games over a career. Ohno has two of each color.

Yes that's true but Korea almost got all the medals for the 1500.

I don't know how many people are following it, but this is shaping up to be a GREAT year for the US at the winter Olympics. The American team won no fewer than a record-setting six gold medals in one day!   :D

I watched a little bit of the Olympics last night before going to bed, and I saw two rather notable things happen.

The Americans got a bronze medal after South Korea got disqualified in the relay.

A German bobsled team that was expected to win the gold crashed halfway down the track. (don't worry, nobody got injured)

I must confess I will be relieved when the Olympics are over. I probably just lack the right spirit, but personally I find it very boring watching other people ski or do whatever other kind of sports. Though I cannot pretend to be much of an athlet myself (only a fast runner) I would, if given the choice, much rather do any sports than watch others do it. Of course I would not interfere with anybody else's pleasure of watching the Olympics and wouldn't begrudge them for anything. My relief when the Olympics end will come mostly from the fact that they will air the regular television news at the regular times (currently it is mostly short snippets of news most of which revolve around the Olympics) at irregular times :rolleyes
Personally I am just a bit more concerned about politics and the recent developments (e.g. in Iran) than I am in how much time a given athlet from a given country (no matter which country) needs to do whatever that athlet is doing.

I wish I could have seen this, Apolo Anton Ohno got disqualified in one of his last races.

Now here's something rather amusing. In bobsleding, when an opponent crashing on the track allows you to win, don't celebrate when you're on TV. :lol

I normally hate hockey, its quite boring, but I have to say I am really excited for the USA vs. Canada Gold medal game tomorrow.  Its going to be intense.

With 36 medals, the U.S. has now won more medals in Vancouver than it did at any other winter Olympic games.
http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/vancouver...?urn=oly,224703 (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/vancouver/blog/fourth_place_medal/post/With-today-s-wins-U-S-wins-overall-medal-count?urn=oly,224703)

They are also guaranteed to win one more medal, either a gold or a silver, depending on the outcome of today's hockey game against Canada. This is a big deal for Canada too, because if they win this gold medal, they will have won more than any other nation at any winter Olympic games. No doubt, this will be one of the biggest hockey matches ever.

A mob of yahooligins blocked the intersection today near my home after Canada won the hockey game.  It was close, and it was settled 3-2 in overtime.  Big win for us, since both our women and our men won gold.

With a score like that, I'm not surprised by how excited the Canadians were.

Too bad I missed the closing ceremony last night. Seems like there were some things I would have found interesting to see.

Haha, I'm just joking.  It was an exciting game to the end and I'm not disappointed about how it turned out.
