I'm sure I can finally force myself to finish the song if I know people are still interested
A little tougher than it looks, isn't it?  :p   ;)

Haha seriously though, good luck! I'd love to see you finish it!

Computer and Electronics / Google Docs vs. MS Word
« on: August 23, 2016, 03:35:38 PM »
Have you considered Open Office as an alternative? I've been using "Writer" and "Calc" for a couple of years now. While I admit I prefer Word to Writer, Writer basically has the same functionality from what I can tell.

Google Docs, as much as I quite like it, does still feel a bit too much like typing in a browser app vs. a fully-featured word processing program. Just my personal taste but I like Writer as my go-to alternative to Word. :)

Gamers Zone / Pokemon GO

It's a neat social game but I'm heartbroken that you can't level up PokÈmon by battling wild ones like you do in the Nintendo games. It also feels pretty pointless to have a PokÈmon game where you can't battle any PokÈmon in a traditional sense. Why can't I battle my friend's PokÈmon Gameboy style? Why did they reduce the battle mechanics to simply swiping to dodge

It's a gross simplification and it's lack of features that made the Nintendo PokÈmon games so engaging makes it little more than an excuse to go for a walk. That on its own is cool but it feels like such an epic dropping of the ball on what could have been a fricking AMAZING PokÈmon game. Instead it suffers from the same over Simplicity and pure grindynsss that we see all the time in mobile games these days. Sad times.  :(

General Land Before Time / Instrumentals of the songs?
« on: July 16, 2016, 03:21:33 AM »
Completely doable. As a matter of fact I've made a handful myself.

I'll post up a link to what I have:

https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B96...enM&usp=sharing

(Please read the filenames of the files I shared. The file name tells you whether that particular file has a melody part or not. If it does, the melody part is played with 1 or more instruments. Melody parts are NEVER sung in these files.)

Some of them are better than others and I've only done a handful. Also, many of them were created with the purpose of singing over, with the vocal lines on the instrumentals as reference only, but it's something. :)

For reference:
I made these by listening to the original songs and re-writing them in software by ear, one note at a time. None of the audio in these files is from the films themselves so there's absolutely no vocal bleeding. That's really the only way to achieve such a result.

What choice do businesses really have?

If you're a business who needs to use Windows 10-exclusive software for your work, you're going to pay the subscription.

You see similar practices all over the professional world.
Here are some examples:

Here's Informatica, a piece of pro-level database integration software:
https://www.informatica.com/ca/products/clo...us-pricing.html
It costs $2,000 per month for the "basic" licence and $4500 / month for the advanced licence.

Here's Composer Cloud X, a music production suite:
http://www.soundsonline.com/composercloud
Starts at $30 / month.

Autodesk suite went subscription-only recently:
http://www.cadalyst.com/management/autodes...only-2016-25644

If you just want Autodesk Maya, it's $185 / month or $1470 / year
http://www.autodesk.com/products/maya/subscribe

People have already mentioned Photoshop.

You see this sort of stuff all the time on the business side. From Microsoft's point of view, it probably makes a lot of sense. Businesses are used to subscription models for their software already. It probably won't really take off on the consumer side anytime soon but these costs are relatively low for businesses. Such a model makes upgrading much simpler AND encourages everyone using the software to always be running the same, most recent version as upgrades will generally always be free.

There are some reasons why this may not actually be awful on the corporate side. I'm not super concerned.
