Just so long as it conforms to Petries size limit.  I've had tons of motion avatars before, and I couldn't make them any good when they went past 15 seconds and still be within Petries limits.  I highly doubt anyone would be able to make a 45 second avatar be under 50k and still have more than 16 colors and be larger than 20X20px.  I don't think it's possible, and I have the most expensive tools available for the job.

Good luck on that.  You have to stick to the limits Petrie set, whatever those may be.

I think to quote Petrie, that it is:

Avatars will max out at 120x120 pixels, which is still quite large comparable to many other boards.

The thread discussing it as at: http://z7.invisionfree.com/thegangoffive/i...topic=2551.0

It's not only 120X120 pixels, it's also a 50k size limit, which in truth is very tiny.  In other words, he wants you to have a picture or a very small gif image.  I was able to create a 15 second avatar within his limits, but it was very hard and the quality was not the best:

NOTE:  No one can use this as an avatar

Yeah, I know it's like 56k, but the limit used to be 170X170 pixels with 60k.  If I shrunk iit down to 120X120, it would be about 47k.

kb is k.  It's just a shortened version of kb.  It's how much space the image takes up on the computer and on the board.  If you had a 500k image, then the person loading the page would have to load that image for as many posts as you had in that thread (the page they were loading).  Therefore, if the image is very large, it slows down peoples computers a lot, making the page load very slowly.  This is what Petrie is trying to avoid.

The avatar I have right now is 17.22k and has a resolution of 120X73, which complies with Petries requirements.  You must do the same when creating a new avatar.

This is my third post, so when you load this thread, you're loading that image 3 times, which makes 51.66k you're having to load, just in my avatar!  Well, most people get around 2,000kps, meaning that every second they can load up to 2,000k.  However, if you use a 56k modem, then you can get a maximum of 56kps, meaning that it would take almost a whole second just to load my avatar.  My avatar is by no means all the stuff you'd have to load either.

Creating the avatar is only half the work.  The rest is ensuring that your avatar complies with Petries requirements and doesn't slow other peoples computers down.

You're welcome.  If you do anything wrong, one of the admins or myself will PM you explaining your error and reveal steps to correct it.  Happy avatar creating. :yes

Austin probably remembers when he used to load images that were around 1mb. :P:  Drove me bananas trying to figure out why everything was so slow for a while.

Its not that I don't like large pretty pictures.  What I don't like is having a huge image try to load multiple times.  If you posted say four times in a thread, and your animated gif image was 700kb (possible for an ani) the browser has to load approximately 2.8mb of data from that image alone, let alone anyone else's stuff and the board code, etc.  If your connection is slow, that would take a very long time.

Good luck.  We're here to help if you get stuck. :)

You got that right. :lol I used no image compression at all and the files were huge.  I think I even used a 4.7mb file once.
