We don't know that much about them, but what little we do know could be relevant to the story... although, sadly, we will likely never see their story completed...
-
I talked about them a bit in my story Rise of Storm Tide, but officially we will probably never know about them.
-
Not much is known. The main info is given in 2 episodes I think. With bits in other episodes, maybe a line here and a line there.
For those who don't know what they look like I have some screenshots of her family.

There could have been more told about them... like... why didn't they ALL run to the valley?
-
& why didn't they all go the the Great Valley the few chances they had, including at th end of Return to Hanging Rock?
-
I know... that was odd... maybe the valley wouldn't accept more fast runners?
-
Maybe they didn't want to move, because that rock thing was their home.
-
Maybe just cause the script writer said no, for no reason I can think of.
-
Why would they WANT to live on a rock when they could be living in the Great Valley? oh well... plothole.

There is a chance that a pair of grownup omnivores (eggs included in the "omni") would be no more welcome than a pair of grownup sharpteeth in the Valley. It still comes across as kind of strange that none of the parents in the Valley (not even Tops!) seems to have a problem with that "exchange program" that might provide a later fully grown sharptooth and eggeater with knowledge that might make hunting or nest-raiding a lot easier for them. I guess in case of Ruby there is still some option for her to rely mostly on plants or possibly scavenging, but for Chomper the day will come when insects won't suffice anymore. I am sure that he would rather eat up his own hands than attack any of the others, but there may be the day when the laws of nature command them to part. They do not totally avoid the problem in the relationship (and I think that one of the episodes I have not yet watched may include more about this) but they do not (and probably cannot) address the ultimate problem too directly. I wonder if Littlefoot ever thought of his mother when seeing Chomper.

The idea of an oviraptor being an eggeater came from a fossil that showed an oviraptor over some eggs, making it look like it was going to eat them. However, it was proven that the eggs were oviraptor eggs and the oviraptor was just taking care of them.
While an oviraptor could have eaten eggs, it probably was not its staple diet. It could have fed on smaller animals, like small mammals and lizards, or baby dinosaurs. I'm not sure if it was an omnivore or not, though. It could have been, thus eating perhaps berries or nuts or whatever else was available.
Besides we never really see any indication that Ruby and her kind are eggeaters, far as I know. With Srut and Ozzy's kind, we know this pretty much right away, almost. But I have yet to see any indication that Ruby and her kind are also eggeaters.
-
That's true, but we do get the indication that she is definitely not a pure herbivore (eating the shells) and Ozzy and Strut apparently could have lived on green food too rather than eggsclusively on eggs ;)
In any case the theory of a grownup representative of a species that might resort to eggs being unwelcome in the Great Valley is the one explanation I can think of why Ruby's family would not be in the valley.
Sometimes I wonder if omnivores might find themselves in kind of an outcast position more likely to be despised by both sharpteeth and herbivores than not. It's just a theory but one which I think I might use in a story.
-
In my story I touched on this point in a big way - I explained that the reason Ruby's parents didn't come to the Great Valley was because they believed they would be unwelcome there because of the threat they posed to the young ones.
Of course thats one of many possible reasons for this.

Good points, all. Perhaps it is possible that Ruby's family CAN live on shellfish and other non-egg material... but that their kind has a bad reputation and thus, the other dinosaurs WON'T let them live with them in the valley.
And since the series is over... we won't get to see a resolution to this... oh well.
