Title: Massive multiplayer test - Finished
Post by: Mumbling on August 12, 2009, 04:18:16 AM
Hey!

As Flathead mentioned, we could try to get up as many players as possible in one game. We'll need 3 things for that:

A host with a decent internet connection.
Lots of others to join!
A time to do so.

I was thinking of the weekends since members usually have more time there.

So for all our americans. Would you rather have a sunday or a saturday morning?
And for our Europeans, rather a saturday or sunday evening/afternoon?

As for me, either one would work out.

Getting the IP adresses shouldn't be a problem. If everyone downloads Hamachi and creates an account with their GoF name(just for keeping it simple) it should be alright.

So far, people who would like to join:

Europe:
Mumbling -either

America:
812558 - saturday
Action9000 - either
Alex - either
Belmont2500 - saturday
Flathead770 - either
Grungecat - either
Kor - ?
LB&T - either
Serris - either

Weekends sound like a good idea since that may be when most members interested in testing the multiplayer would have the most free time I would guess.

Okay awesome, added your name to the list above as well.

I'd love to make a video of our meeting to use for the next video update on youtube, or just as advertising in general. If anyone else has a video recording program on their computer and would like to try and film as well, they're certainly welcome to. It would be nice to see it from different perspectives.

What is Hamachi? Totally willing to download it, but I'm not positive what that is or what I need to do.

Hamachi is a networking program. Don't worry, I will make a nice tutorial on how to get and use it. Will be posted here soon.

How to get and use Hamachi:

Go here: https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp (https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp)

Click on the big yellow button 'Download now'

You can register, but it's optional. Make sure to tick the last box though.

Choose your OS and download it to your computer.

Just install it as you would install any program.

Use Hamachi as a non-commercial license.

You'll have to enter a username. I cannot show you this procedure because I already have an account on my computer. It should be pretty simple though.

Just for the heck of it, I created a room you can join. Click on the triangle like button on the bottom of the hamachi screen and choose the option 'join an existing network'. The name of the network is: LBTRPGTestroom and the password is
*REMOVED BY ACTION9000*

Please send the passwords by PM or something, Iris. :) Any computer on this network can be freely accessed by anyone else on the network.  If I connect to it and another person who wants to cause trouble connects to it, they could actually delete countless GB of data from my computer.  Security is very important when using Hamachi.  Thanks. :)

Everything should work properly.

You know how if multiple computers are in a house or a building, they can all connect together and be on a home network or something?

Hamachi lets up create a network just like that, except the computers don't need to be in the same building.  This is useful because in order to play internet games by IP normally, every player needs to forward the correct ports on their router and..ugh it's a technical nightmare. :p

This just makes the procedure simple; just type in the IP that Hamachi gives you and it magically works. :p

Just remember, like I said above in Mumbling's post:
*DO NOT share passwords publically for hamachi networks!*
This is because anyone connected will have the same rights to the computers on the network as any computers on your home network.  In my case, anyone connected to the same Hamachi network as me can access (and even delete!) hundreds of GB of my personal files.  People would also have access to install software on my computer, such as malware, very easily.  Security is a serious thing with Hamachi.  Protect those passwords! :)

I trust members here to not delete my stuff or install viruses on my computer, but this topic can be viewed by Guests, who could literally be anyone.

Fair enough. I didn't know this part of the forum was also for guests(previously only members could see it).

I'm just thinkin' that permissions of a forum like this could change at anytime, as we work on more private things, as we want to expose more publically, blahblahblah. :p

Being private as this section was, there could still become a time when we want to move it into the public's eyes, at which point everything here would become no longer secret.  I would have removed that from your post even if this section was still for members only, because someday it may not be.  Even members only, we don't always get perfectly well-behaved members.  I probably overreact, but the internet scares me sometimes. :p

No worries about it; to be fair, most people have more network security than I do. I just have it really easy to transfer and change files around my network because I do it so often. :p

No worries, really! :D  Until very recently, this part of the forum was just for members and I was just thinking about the day when it may not be and the wrong person comes by.  :p

Yes, you have to forward port 3999 on your router for the game to recognize the connection, if you have a router at home.  If that makes sense, or you don't have a router, don't worry about hamachi.  Otherwise, hamachi is probably going to be the easiest way.

Too bad I can't just leave a server running, or I could just set it all up once and it would be good to go...

I really wish I had a simpler way to make multiplayer work...Sorry everyone, a permanent server would make life quite a bit easier since then I could just set up all this stuff in the code and players could just join by clicking a button.

I don't know what I can possibly do to make multiplayer any easier.
Title: Massive multiplayer test - Finished
Post by: Alex on August 12, 2009, 09:08:14 PM
Well I do agree about a 24/7 online server, it would be the easiet, most funnest way for the game to work. I would be able to help with that (I'm not worried about electricity bills or nothing, my computer doesn't get shut off anyway), but I have severe limitations on my internet bandwidth, and I don't know how it would affect my bandwidth limit.

Yeah, I can forward the port, that's no problem. I just didn't want to expose all my files to any risk.

Sorry but hamachi really is simple! I wish I could keep that password not private so that everyone could just go in there and see for themselves. Once you're logged into it you see people's hamachi ip. You can just fill it in on join game and you're in! Will send password to you.

I messaged everyone on my little list in the first post and someone who I think wants to join as well(flathead). Please read your PM.

Action and I just decided on a time:

As for most of you, you'll live in eastern america (GMT-5). Please be there around 1pm (make sure you've had your lunch :D)
I'm the only european but still... GMT+1, I'll be there at 7pm.
Action would be in the timezone of GMT-7. Please be there at 11AM.

Any questions about your timezone? Please tell me.

That's as easy as it is!

You'll be able to see everyone's Hamachi IP(not actual IP). Once we've got a host(Action9000, want to be it?) anyone can just join on the IP address of the host though the join game button in the main menu of our actual game!

You can try to log in now and log out as well. Once you log back in on saturday you'll be in this room again.

And for saturday: Please only choose from cera, littlefoot, ducky or spike, I'm not sure what Ruby and Petrie will do with the game.

When I installed it, there were boxes pre-checked for things like "Make Hamachi your home page" and the like. I unchecked them all before proceeding. It's possible you didn't see them and left them on. I'm sure it's fixable.

I uninstalled the program after it messed me up. I had to remake my home network and redo my internet connection (I get my internet though my network since I have routers in between my box and my room)...maybe I did forget to specify what it would do about changing my home group to a public network, oh well. I'll be ready when gameday comes via Alex. :)

What Hamachi actually does, is install another network connection on your computer.  It should not replace your current network, it will just add another one.  I honestly don't know why it decided to mess up your settings so badly.  I've never had a problem with it doing anything like that...

Here's what it should do: Leave your current connections the way they are and just add another one.

So, how do I use Hamachi to get into the game? Just turn on the game, hit "join," and your name will be sitting there?

I basically just want to know exactly what to do, step by step.
Title: Massive multiplayer test - Finished
Post by: action9000 on August 15, 2009, 12:16:10 PM
Sure thing:

Step 1) Run Hamachi and join the server that Mumbling set up.
*NOTE* It works much more reliably if you run hamachi *before* running the LBT game.

Step 2) Next to the username "Sonata" in hamachi (that's me and I'm hosting a game), you will see a series of numbers called an IP Address.  Write down or remember those numbers exactly.

Step 3) Start the LBT game and click "Join".

Step 4) Where it says "IP Address", click on that box and type *exactly* what you see (the numbers and dots) next to my hamachi name.  Next, give yourself a name by clicking on the Name box and typing.

Step 5) Press ENTER or click Start in the bottom-right corner.  It will take you to the Character select screen if you successfully connected.  You will be left on the Join Game screen if it could not connect.  If it didn't connect, message me on hamachi by right clicking Sonata and clicking "Chat".  I'll see what I can do from there

Step 6)
Choose either:
A longneck
Threehorn
Swimmer
Spiketail

as your character.  Your name will appear around the bottom middle of the screen here.

*NOTE* Flyers and fastrunners will not work properly in multiplayer since we don't have models for them yet.

Step 7)
Click Start and you'll see us in the game :D

*NOTE*
Press / to start chatting.
Press ENTER to send your chat message to everyone else in the game.

Sawwy about that! :p :p

What exactly happened?

the game was stable with 3/4 players, as long as all of the players had good connections.  4 players when one of them had a weaker connection appeared to have caused crashes for everyone.

We had as many as 6 players in the game but it crashed soon after the 6th one joined, when this new player alt-tabbed.  I don't know what the cause of the crash was, since alt-tabbing does not normally break anything in this game.

We also ran into a bug where all clients saw a model of their own dino sitting up at the starting position.  This model had its own ID number and didn't respond to any movement keys from any players.  I'm obviously just creating an ID (maybe one lower than the lowest or one higher than the highest player) that I don't have to and I need to find out where that is.

Okay, I honestly haven't got the slightest idea why the network crashed with 5/6 people.  I have a few guesses, such as the amount of data I have to send around when a player joins the game..or my game relying on connections being very very strong..but I'd love to find a way to just have the poorly connected player drop from the game rather than bringing down the whole game.

The problem is right now, when a new player joins, every computer on the network has to do a bunch of stuff and I think that's part of the problem.  I can try to streamline that a bit and cut down on the amount of network activity involved with a new joining player and hope that helps a little...

but the game has also crashed at times not relating to a new joining player so this is officially very complicated.

Once again, I was getting more network activity than I thought I'd need for sending such simple data around.  I'll see what I can cut back but we had everything on the slowest settings for this test...

What about quality? I always clicked "High Quality" at the green first screen. It was just, whenever I clicked Low I couldn't log in. Each time the reason I couldn't log in was shown to be something else, but I guess I associated Low with "inable-to-log-in". Would keeping it low quality help?
Title: Massive multiplayer test - Finished

I would assume the quality thing is only for your own CPU, not so much for the network , but I would need tim to confirm that if it's correct.

Yes it's too bad you couldn't get it to work Kor. It would be fun to have you around.

Nope, the quality settings have absolutely no effect on the functionality of the network.  The only thing you can change that affects the network is the network speed option.

Yes it's too bad you couldn't get it to work Kor. It would be fun to have you around.
I'd have liked to be on there but if Hamachi refuses to work nothing I can do about it.

You know, Kor, all you need is the IP address. Since we can all get on Hamachi, we could just PM you the IP we're using. You'll log in later than the rest of us, but at least you can participate.

Mumbling, make sure to post a link to your video. You are uploading it to Youtube, right?

That's alright, I can approve of your comments but the thing is if you become a friend(and I accept, of course) you can comment without me approving. It's just slightly easier for me and for future videos.

I'd like an admin to lock this topic and change the title to something like "Massive Multiplayer Test - Finished"

Though I doubt any admin will see this soon since I never see Petrie or Nick in this section, malte and jason are having fun and tim's.... sleeping and working. Oh well, will be done once :)

Fair enough, it's not in much of a hurry though. I just want to prevent newer members from being like "I wanna join too!"

Thanks for the tip though :)
