I must admit that the initial scene is a great way to show the characters having deep resentment and distrust in one another, more commonly with Lenel and Haste. Indeed, this chapter was filled to the brim with interesting developments and consequences that only proved to make it so much more enjoyable in the end. However, I would like to point something that I found to be rather lacking in the quality, but I will talk about that more later.

The conversation between Petrie and his companions was a rather interesting one with the complications they all face. Petrie and Ortin would like nothing more than to avenge their loved ones demises at the hands of Lenel, and that factor seems to be what drives them on this task. Their feelings on the matter is more than justified when you take into consideration everything they’ve had to endure to get to this point. This is a factor that makes these two characters relate with one another with their personal vendetta against their mutual foe.

This same pattern is kind of repeated later on when Petrie confronts Ruby on her decision to fight alongside Lenel, and her reason for that is very much understandable. Ruby’s thoughts on the matter also forced that idea further that there simply may not be another choice for them to save Arial from whatever fate she might soon face. Still, this doesn’t certainly mean that the two are ready to cast aside their friendship with one another. This was also a good sequence to show just how much both of them have grown since their last encounter.

The reunion between Ducky and Petrie was indeed a necessary one to drive this story further and I quite like the way it was handled. Although I fear what might happen in the future as it is looking rather obscure right now for all of them and there simply isn’t a way to know if they will be able to rendezvous with each other before something sinister might befall. During all of this, we also witness a rather heartfelt discussion between Ruby and Sireia that managed to flesh out their relationship a bit more. They may started as a necessary alliance in order to make the best out of a desperate situation, but they certainly are starting to represent some form of friendship between each other.

But what really took me by surprise was the revelation about Haste and her cunning plan to gain the power she claims to be hers by right. The obscure circumstance surrounding Ortin’s father’s demise hasn’t been brought up a lot, but now we know the reason and the perpetrator. This came as a total surprise to me as I didn’t expect the female flyer to go this far in her quest for power. It truly shows that she is nothing sort of an opportunistic figure craving for power.

I’m not going to lie, this chapter was a tremendous leap in advancement and the battle scenes were rather well done with breaks in between to give the reader bit of a respite before continuing the carnage. I did say that there was one problem I had with the chapter and it would be that how long the battle ultimately was and is still ongoing. It has mostly to do with my preferences, but I would’ve preferred if you didn’t focus this much on the conflict and rather inspect more about how the characters find it, but I don’t have big problems with that. This was another solid chapter that only raises more questions about what is going to happen in the near future. Neatly done, Sovereign! :)

There is certainly a lot to unpack in this chapter.  The climatic battle between Haste and Lenel is truly in progress now, but in many ways the battle itself is only one aspect to the action in this chapter.  For everyone involved in this conflict this chapter has provided a great number of revelations.  And, for both Petrie and Ruby, their alliances must now be seen in a different light now that the realities behind Haste and Lenel are being revealed.

In many ways the motivations of Ortin on one end, and Ruby on another, appear simple initially.  Each has sough revenge against those who have wronged them, with Ruby now wanting to retrieve Arial.  However, in many ways their simple and justifiable motivations are playing out against the backdrop of much more pressing concerns and schemes that up until now they have only been partially aware.  Now, however, with the admission of Haste's plan to gain power, the full scope of how everyone has been played is now apparent to Petrie.  In the wake of this revelation it is unclear how Petrie can use this information or whether, like Ruby, he will feel obligated to continue his previous course of action despite being enlightened.  One thing is now clear however: Haste will stop at nothing in the acquisition of her desired power.  More blood will certainly be spilled before the battle between the ambitious flyers is finally resolved.

As for your decision to split the chapter into two parts, I think that is a very justifiable action. Having a single chapter that merely involves a gigantic battle can lead to the details falling in the cracks, and it can dilute the emotional impact of the battle by making its events fade into a large set piece battle. Splitting such a battle, however, can allow for much greater control over the flow of the events, and it can allow for additional flexibility in capturing the emotional impact of the various revelations and resolutions.  That being said, splitting the climatic battle into two chapters does create a cliffhanger, though I am hardly qualified to criticize anyone about those. :p  In any case I look forward to seeing how this epic battle concludes. :)  I can only hope that in the end Ruby, Ducky, and Petrie can put the pieces together and bring things to a satisfactory conclusion.  Ancestors know they all have suffered enough.

Of Judgement and Courage

A croaking sound escaped from the boy’s lungs as he forced himself forward as quickly as his injured body could carry him. Littlefoot felt his every part aching as he ran uphill towards the place where his dreams and hopes had been crushed finally and completely. It was the last place he wanted to see right now but he had to believe it had been the real Petrie he had seen earlier. The longneck almost wanted to believe he was chasing just another phantom but his heart told him that he was right. He simply had to be!

Suddenly, the male felt his legs failing under him and before he knew it, the poor longneck found himself lying among the ground sparkles, his chin hurting after hitting a rock sticking up from the ground. Littlefoot hardly noted that setback as they had been all he had known lately and even now, he would have wanted to simply stay still and not move a muscle but he simply couldn’t do that. He had to see if he had actually met the dinosaur he thought he had and he cursed deeply as he forced himself up from the ground, panting as he finally regained his footing.

It wasn’t long anymore to the edge of that place where he thought his destiny had lied and he certainly wouldn’t give up now. Only one thought lingered within Littlefoot’s broken mind as he continued to run forward: he would give his last breath to help any of his old friends if it only helped them live through whatever ordeal they were facing. His panting grew more forced but also more determined as the longneck continued his desperate charge.

Her heart beat in her ears as Ruby looked at the approaching flyers. The fastrunner cursed at what she was seeing but deep down, she still had to believe her foes hadn’t been able to actually spot her or Sireia just yet due to the absolute blackness covering the entire plateau. They had most likely heard something or seen some vague movement. The smell of decay hung over the battlefield too completely for the flyers to smell the hiding duo so Ruby knew she still had some chance to save the situation.

Trying to calm herself down, the omnivore listened to her surroundings and it wasn’t long before she heard some weak squeaking not far to her right. Knowing that whatever ground fuzzy had made that sound had saved her, Ruby started to quickly search for a small stone from the ground and without further hesitation, threw the rock towards the sound and to the girl’s ultimate joy, she heard a pained cry from the ground fuzzy as it ran away from further attacks. The omnivore noticed that the flyers immediately turned towards that new sound and Ruby wasted no time whispering to her companion.

“Let’s go, now! With any chance, thy won’t see us escaping!” She said as she crouched deeply and starting her slow but silent escape. Sireia immediately did as told and as seconds moved on slowly, they realized that they were saved. It would be extremely unlikely for the flyers to find their footsteps in this darkness and that fact was mirrored in Ruby’s voice.

“I… I think we made it. They won’t be able to find us anymore!” She said while looking at Sireia’s eyes. The older female looked nervously behind her, hearing her chasers arguing in the distance and it certainly didn’t seem like they were on their tail anymore. Sireia sighed deeply as she next spoke to her companion.

“You did well, Ruby, but we still aren’t safe!” We have to find some real shelter or they’ll find us soon enough!” She said nervously, making Ruby frown slightly. She was glad to still be alive but this hiding was getting on her nerves. She gulped before speaking again to the older female.

“You’re right, Sireia, right you are. That means we have to mov… Umm, it’s really silent, isn’t it?” She suddenly changed the subject, making Sireia’s expression to darken immediately. Her voice was a stern one as she started to give her answer.

“What about that? We have much better th… Oh… you’re right. The battle is over.” Sireia suddenly said extremely glumly as she looked at the skies. There were no more sounds of fighting and the few flyers still visible were only circling around slowly. Ruby felt her heart sinking as she saw a single tear falling from Sireia’s eye. Even now, she couldn’t help but feel bad for the flyer but it wasn’t long before she suddenly come up with an answer.

“Don’t be sad just yet, Sireia. Lenel lost but we don’t hear any cries of celebrations from Haste’s followers. You know what that means?” She asked, causing Sireia to look at her oddly. It was clear she was already dwelling in her own fears but it wasn’t long before she inhaled deeply in an attempt to calm down. She couldn’t disagree with Ruby’s implication and her voice was almost calm as she spoke next.

“Indeed, Ruby. He must still be alive. I just hope… that he returns to me before it is too late.” She said while crossing her hands, looking at the sky with a heavy heart. Ruby could easily see that her concern was genuine but deep down, a new, disgusting feeling started to form in the fastrunner’s heart. If Lenel had already lost, her deal with the pale flyer was already obsolete and with that, her chances of finding Arial. Now, only Haste could offer her such a blessing but… why would she ever help a fastrunner who had helped her worst enemy in the battle to deny her the prize she had craved for for many seasons?

Ortin gasped for air as he listened to the other flyer’s story. Every word that came out of his mouth seemed like a direct hit at the bluish boy’s face, his already dwindling hopes turning into outrage. He had no reason to distrust Petrie and even if he didn’t quite agree with him too often, he was more than ready to trust that Petrie had truly heard what he claimed. His voice trembled with cold hate as she spoke the other male.

“H… how could she? When I get my hands on that lying, murderous bastard I’ll…” He started but before he got further, Petrie decided to interrupt him in clear concern. He gulped slightly as he knew that another argument with Ortin seemed unavoidable.

“Petrie understand you angry, Ortin, and there nothing wrong with that. But you cannot go after Haste now! You’ll only get yourself killed!” He spoke, making Ortin simply roll his eyes. He could hardly contain his emotions as he spoke to the other flyer in a voice that didn’t sugarcoat his emotions any but still prevented it to be heard by any other flyers who might be nearby.

“And so what, Petrie? You weren’t there before that monster made her move! Haste has taken everything from me: my dad, my herd and my family! Lenel is still a slimeball of his own right but Haste…” Ortin stopped as he cringed his teeth together in outrage. Petrie realized that he had to be firm here even if it upset the other boy as this simply wasn’t a moment where anyone should take rash decisions.

“No, Petrie wasn’t there but listen: we not know if Haste know how to get the powers of this place and even if she do, me hope the spirits not give her the power. And if she not get it, you only make her job easier. Me not like about these things at all but… but you still Warekli’s relative.” Petrie said, making  him inhale briefly as he said those words.

Ever since he had first arrived in the herd, he had hated the idea of someone family making them more important than others but no matter how he hated that, he couldn’t deny that family was more than important to flyers and there was no reason why he and his friends shouldn’t use that to their own advantage. Ortin narrowed his eyes as he answered in a dark voice.

“What about that, Petrie? That’s not news to anyone the last I checked!” He said sharply, making Petrie roll his eyes briefly. He took a short breath before giving his answer. It wasn’t something he had thought for a long time but right now, it was the only way forward Petrie could come up with.

“What Petrie mean is that you can still get your revenge on Haste later! You can gather your own herd and bring the fight to Haste when you older! If you die here, none of that possible anymore!” The boy’s words caused Ortin’s eyes to widen for a moment as he realized his friend’s point. That was something that made his heart beast faster the more he thought about it. He had never considered that realistic as he had grown up seeing himself as some kind of useless addition of the family who would never hold any position of power.

But now… now he was his family’s only surviving member and thus… he could lay claim to Peak’s old position among the flyers in the future! Of course that would have to wait until he was flyer but if he was cunning and strong enough, he could indeed do what Petrie had suggested. He didn’t forget the circumstances that enabled that chance for a moment
but Ortin couldn’t help but give Petrie a wide smile. However, that smile died down almost immediately as the bluish dinosaur suddenly spoke glumly.

“Though, what happens if Haste indeed gains Olres’ powers? At that point, whatever I do will be for nothing, Petrie!” He said, making Petrie gulp nervously. He didn’t want to think about that possibility and he had no answer to that question and his tone revealed that as he tried to reason with the other male.

“Umm… as Petrie said, me hope it will not happ…” He started but Ortin cut him short in clear annoyance.

“So you don’t know what we’ll do in that case. I’m not surprised.” He said dryly, finally causing Petrie’s calm to shatter. The stress of this fight had already stretched his nerves to the limit and Ortin’s arguing didn’t improve his mood any.

“So what? What you want to do, Ortin? Do you plan to attack Haste headlong and somehow take her out without the others joining the fight? Is that your plan?” He growled, causing Ortin to speak to him in a trembling, even threatening voice.

“Maybe it is, Petrie! How about you? Are you just planning to stay here and hope everything turns out well in the end? Is that what you flew all this way for?” Ortin asked, making Petrie’s expression to darken even further. He knew Ortin would hardly approve of his answer but he wasn’t in the mood to lie about such things right now.

“Petrie plan to find Ruby and tell her what happened! That the only way she will leave Lenel before it too late for her! That the best me can do without getting meself killed for nothing!” He said, making Ortin snort mockingly. He prepared to turn around but before he did so, he spoke to his friend one more time.

“Whatever. I hope you have fun reasoning with a baby killer! I at least try to do something about Haste before she gets the power to lead us all!” He said before disappearing into the darkness. Petrie looked after him in clear outrage but he could still remember that staying mad at Ortin wasn’t the best use of his time. He wasted no time heading towards the ground, praying that he’d find Ruby before it was too late.

Haste cursed deeply as she flew forward with her herd, the situation bothering her deeply. Yes, she had won but Lenel had managed to lose his chasers and even worse, she had no idea what to do now. Nobody stood between her and Olres’ powers but how in earth could she claim them? Lenel knew the answer to that question which made catching him ever more paramount. If this was how her victory would be robbed from her…

Suddenly, the female’s eyes caught the sight of something that made her narrow her eyes. The host of lights still lingered far below her, causing the victorious flyers’ expression lighten up immediately. They’d either give her the answers she was looking for or they’d regret their denial dearly! Immediately, she cried at her followers before plunging towards the ground.

“Continue the chase, everyone! I’ll join you shortly!” Haste yelled, not waiting for any kind of answer as she headed towards the group of lights shimmering in the middle of the endless darkness. As she stopped in front of them, she demanded them with a low and hate-filled voice.

“Well, now that I’ve beaten your new “guardian”, you better do as I say! Now, tell me how I will be able to claim Olres’ powers or I’ll turn this place upside down to find it!” She yelled, not worried in the slightest as the spirits started to approach her slowly. She stood still as she heard the answer within her head.

“Neither you or any other dinosaur may command us, flyer! If you want to have a chance, then you will prove your worth by using this victory to your best ability!” The ghosts said, making the female to tremble in frustration. She stepped forward and yelled loudly at the mysterious lights.

“Maybe you did not listen me closely enough! I own this place now and it is in my power to…” She started but before she got further, Haste found herself lying in the ground on her back, gasping heavily. She immediately looked around herself, seeing that the spirits were still not far in front of her, realizing that they had sent her flying into the ground
effortlessly. Grudgingly, she had to admit that she had no choice but to do as she was told. She cried at the spirits one more time, bitterness more than clear in her voice.

“Very well. I will play by your rules but I’ll make sure you’ll regret this once I’m done!” She yelled as she took off again, more determined than ever to find and kill the cursed flyer that was standing between her and victory.

“Get here, Sireia! We should be safe here!” Ruby whispered as she pointed at a large rock leaning against the mountainside. That rock left a narrow spot to hide under it and it would be nearly impossible to spot anyone hiding under it from the skies. The fastrunner looked as the flyer moved to safety but inside the girl could feel a massive storm forming inside her.

She had nothing to gain by guarding Sireia anymore. If anything, her presence only endangered her further and even if she was able to keep Lenel’s mate safe, the pale flyer himself had absolutely nothing to offer her anymore. Haste on the other hand… she could indeed still be able to save Arial.

However, those thoughts were more than distasteful for the fastrunner. She had started to somewhat like Sireia and despite her obvious faults, Ruby truly wanted her to get away from here alive. Sireia was a dinosaur who was worthy of her own word and she was far more honorable than the vast majority of leaders she had ever met. Besides, she had just started to truly earn the flyer’s trust and betraying her now would prove every word the older female had ever said about fastrunners and other halfteeth.

But even then, Ruby knew she had only one way to save Arial. Haste certainly wanted some proof that she was serious about allying herself with her and at this point, Ruby knew she had but one tribute that would prove that. The girl’s heart grew heavy as she looked at Sireia’s open back, knowing that this was the only way to move forward. It would come as a further blow to her self-esteem but Arial deserved better than to die in this sickening place. The fastrunner nearly twitched as the flyer spoke to her anxiously.

“You’ve done well, Ruby. I’ll tell Lenel that you’ve repaid your transgressions many times over.” She said while glancing at Ruby briefly. Those words made the omnivore feel even worse but she knew she couldn’t reveal her intentions now by letting her composure fail completely. Her voice was practically normal as she answered.

“I’m happy you think so, Sireia, as keeping you safe means keeping my sister at least somewhat safe and that the only thing I want right now!” She said, earning a long, unreadable glance from the flyer. Sireia’s eyes narrowed as she answered to the fastrunner.

“Yes, I know our goals are different but it’s good to see we can still work this well together. You know, I truly hope you’ll find your sister before long. I just pray that Lenel is still alive as well.” She said, looking at Ruby sadly. The omnivore gulped as she thought about what to say, her heart beating wickedly as she tried to keep herself calm.

“So do I. Even if he didn’t get the power he wanted, I still hope you two can find a new life together. You deserve as much, Sireia, as does Lenel.” She said, hoping that her expression stayed believable enough. The older female gave the girl a weak smile before turning around to look at the sky, crossing her hands as she waited for her mate’s arrival.

It was at this point that Ruby knew that her time had come. She’d hate herself for this honorless murder but sometimes a fastrunner had to do whatever they had to in order to protect themselves or their loved ones. Ruby took a few steps forward and after noticing that Sireia didn’t seem to react in any way, she suddenly dashed forward, clearly heading for the kill. The world seemed to slow around the omnivore as Sireia grew ever closer to her and her heart seemed to freeze still as the flyer’s head started to slowly turn at her, the flyer’s expression turning into that of horror and outrage. Ruby already thought she was on the verge of succeeding… until Sireia jumped to her side as quickly as she could.

The first few seconds were a complete mess within Ruby’s eyes. She could feel her claws tearing into the larger dinosaur’s flesh before she felt her leap coming to its end, followed by the inevitable impact into the ground. The fastrunner panted as she forced herself up from the ground, her expression darkening as she saw Sireia’s form in front of her. The omnivore looked at a new, long wound on Sireia’s side with some satisfaction, knowing that it would be a real hindrance to her opponent from now on. The older female panted heavily as she spoke to her former ally.

“So… you really were ready to do anything for your sister, weren’t you, Ruby?” She asked cryptically, causing Ruby to relax her muscles slightly. The resuming of the fight didn’t seem to be imminent and she could just as well explain herself to ease her own conscience.

“I truly was, Sireia. I hoped it didn’t have to come to this but Arial means more to me than you or Lenel or anything else in this life!” She yelled, the duo starting to circle each other slowly, knowing that blood would soon be spilled. The flyer spat into the ground, clearly disgusted by the sight in front of her.

“Spoken like a true fastrunner. You know, you really made me think someone of your kind might be different and what did I get as a reward? I’m just happy I kept my guard up as well as I did.” she said, causing Ruby’s mood to darken slightly. Her voice was a bothered one as she answered.

“You mean… you never trusted me completely?” She asked carefully, making Sireia roll her eyes. Her voice seethed with hate as she looked at her new foe.

“I already said it, Ruby. I believed you when you said you’d do anything for your sister.” She said, that revelation not really astonishing Ruby greatly. She was disappointed with herself for not seeing Sireia’s doubts before but on the other hand, the flyer had never been a stupid one. Ruby knew now that the time for words was over and that from now on, she’d simply have to utilize the early advantage she had received to her best ability.

“Well, I still intend to do that. I never wanted to hurt you but sometimes fate forces to do some things we never would have wanted!” Ruby cried as she dashed forward, able to land another blow against the injured flyer. The fastrunner knew she held the advantage as flyers were never meant to fight in the ground and besides, Sireia was already wounded. She would be victorious in this duel if she avoided making major blunders. However, she also could see that Sireia was far from a stranger to battles so despite her
inability to fly, she’d still have to be extremely careful with her opponent. Unfortunately for Ruby, her time was far more limited than she could have foreseen.

Lenel’s eyes scoured the darkness feverishly, knowing that one of Haste’s followers could appear from practically anywhere, cutting his escape short and ending his life before he could even move his finger. The male was more than devastated by the destruction of his group of followers, not only lamenting his own defeat but also the fact that he had led them to their deaths. Yes, he had been a disgrace ever since the start but even in this most sickening of moments, the pale flyer was able to remind himself that those thoughts could wait for a little longer. Right now, finding Sireia was the most important objective.

It had been a few minutes since he had disengaged from his duel with Haste and the former leader was growing slightly more optimistic about his chances. If he was merely trying to escape, he’d be already safe but alas, that wasn’t something he could do. Lenel cursed deeply for not telling his mate just where to go as that would have made this search far easier. Despite the distance he had made between himself and his chasers, Lenel knew very well that they were still in his tail. The longer he dwelled here, the more probable it’d be that…

Suddenly, the flyer heard a growl of pain from beneath himself, his eyes narrowing as he recognized that voice. It was clearly Ruby’s which meant... which meant that Sireia had to be there as well! But why was she crying in pain? Had Haste’s followers already found them? The male’s mind was suddenly filled with fear and concern as he plunged downwards, more than ready to fight until his last breath if it would help Sireia survive whatever battle she was engaged in.

The entire situation felt like one from a sleep story to Ducky as she walked forward with Orchid, still not being able to understand just what had happened. After all this time, she had finally reunited with another one of her old friends… only for him to leave her immediately! That meeting had been one of the most joyful moments the swimmer could remember but she was more than hurt by Petrie’s departure. She had a hard time wondering about what Petrie had been talking about but she wanted to believe it was of great importance.

However, Petrie’s parting words also lingered within the girl’s mind heavily. Was Littlefoot truly alive? After everything that had happened, could it truly be that two more of her friends were still in this world? That seemed like an impossible dream come true for the swimmer but even then, Petrie was still risking his life for some cause she knew nothing of and without the flyer, she had no way of finding Littlefoot, meaning that that piece of news could turn out to be useless for her! The swimmer tried to ignore those thoughts as Orchid spoke to her again.

“The battle is over, Ruby. I just wonder if the side Petrie is on won.” He said fearfully. Even if he had never met the flyer before, he had come to trust Ruby’s friends tremendously and Petrie seemed as nice and trustworthy as the rest of them. The young fastrunner prayed in his mind that the flyer hadn’t met his end here as he wanted more dinosaurs near him he could trust in this bleakest of situations.

Orchid’s words caused an even more fearful expression appear on Ducky’s face as she hadn’t noticed that before. But it was true, there was no more fighting in the sky which meant… that the other group had either been slaughtered or they had surrendered. To her immense frustration, Ducky had no idea whether it was Petrie’s side or his enemies that had prevailed and her uncertainty was mirrored in her next remark.

“Do not imply such things, Orchid. Surely Petrie won but… but in that case, he should return to us soon.” She said, feeling the chill creep to her heart as she realized that every passing second decreased the chances of Petrie returning to her alive. Orchid, however, wasn’t nearly as negative as his companion, remembering just how complex the situation was for everyone involved. He was far from convinced by his own words but they were the only one he could come up with right now.

“I’m not sure about that, Ducky. Even if he survived, he might try to find the new friends he mentioned or Ruby before us. I don’t know what he’s up to but we cannot wait for him! We have to find Ruby ourselves!” He said, earning a bothered expression from the girl. She couldn’t help but respect Orchid’s observations about his environment which were usually much more than could be expected from someone his age. The young boy would grow up to be a resourceful fastrunner one day but that didn’t answer the swimmer’s biggest question right now.

“But even if you are right, how do we find her? Tell me how, Orchid!” She said pleadingly, slowly starting to get ever more desperate as the seconds moved on. The boy was preparing to rebuke the swimmer’s increasingly desperate antics when he suddenly stopped still, staring into the distance with wide eyes. Ducky looked at him oddly, frustrated by the fact that Orchid’s senses were superior to hers in almost every way. In a morbid realization, she slowly started to understand just why her own kind had such a hard time in the Mysterious Beyond. It wasn’t long before Orchid waved his hand and spoke to his companion in a sharp voice.

“I think I heard something! Try to keep up, Ducky!” He said before sprinting into the distance. Ducky wasted no time doing as she was told, praying that Orchid hadn’t misheard whatever the two were now chasing.

The flyer took one step back as she prepared for another round of the fight. She could feel herself growing weaker from her injuries and only now she started to appreciate the omnivore’s abilities as a fighter. Her speed and quick attacks were making Sireia’s situation increasingly dire and genuine fear started to appear on the older female’s mind. She had thought she’d be able to withstand any attacks from the halftooth and if she had been able to fly, she certainly would have. But now… now she was forced to really face the prospect that she’d get killed here and now. But she’d certainly not go down without a fight no matter what!

Ruby looked at her opponent closely, trying to come up with the best way to move forward. Sireia was seriously injured but she still hadn’t won. Sireia’s vital arteries were still intact and she hadn’t been able to deliver any other decisive blows either. That would have to change soon or the entire battle could turn against her within a blink of an eye. The girl was just about to charge at Sireia again when she heard a voice that made her blood run cold.

“Sireia! Are you there? Please answer to m…” Lenel’s voice called before it was suddenly cut short. Ruby knew immediately why as she glanced at the skies above herself, seeing a dark silhouette of a flyer forming against the night sky. Ruby knew that she couldn’t afford to waste anymore time and she immediately dashed towards Sireia, knowing that this was her last opportunity to claim her victory.

Lenel’s breathing nearly stopped as he saw her mate preparing to withstand another attack from her former ally. He was happy to see that she was still alive but even that relief was quickly overwhelmed by pure, blind rage. To think that the dinosaur who he had accepted as his ally and who he had promised everything she had asked for had betrayed his dear mate like this… this betrayal would not go unpunished! Even Haste’s treachery was almost wiped from his mind as Ruby’s backstabbing was far more personal than anything
the female flyer had done. The fastrunner would pray she had never taken this step before the end!

That reaction wasn’t a secret to Ruby as she tried to break Sireia’s defense. The omnivore inflicted a new, bleeding wound on the older female’s thigh but to her surprise, the flyer started a counterattack in order to buy herself a few more precious seconds. She leaped closer to Ruby and hit her in the chest with all her power, causing the girl to gasp for air. Sireia didn’t hesitate to use her momentum and she hit the girl in her face with a violent power, causing Ruby to fall into the ground, her nose bleeding from the hit. The fastrunner tried to recover her footing but she gave up those plans as Lenel landed next to his mate, looking at her first.

“Are you alright, my love? Did this bastard do any real harm to you?” He asked, able to see just how severely the female was bleeding but that wasn’t something that would keep the tan-colored flyer down for long. Sireia panted deeply, more than happy that Lenel was now here. Her voice reflected those emotions as she gave her answer.

“Yes… yes, I am, Lenel. I am now. But we must hurry as its only a matter of time before Haste finds us here!” She said, knowing that the reflections for the duo’s future would have to wait for now. Their followers were gone and Haste would make sure they’d never be able to rejoin their herd so from now on, it would only be her and Lenel, struggling to survive from day to day with their small joys and sorrows… inside, the female wasn’t as repulsed by that thought as she would have imagined only  an hour ago. The male snorted at that answer and he stepped forward as she spoke to the dinosaur he hated more than any other in this world.

“Indeed we do, dear, but I have to make one clear point here. The first one is that I do not tolerate treachery and the second one is that no one assaults you and lives! From now on, I will never allow any honor to force me to do something my brain warns me about. Thank you for teaching me that, Ruby.” The flyer said as he approached the girl threateningly, making Ruby took one step back after another. She knew she’d never beat Lenel but what were the options? Fleeing still wasn’t an option and Sireia wasn’t wrong about the fact that Haste would find the trio soon enough. Maybe the sight of her fighting Lenel would be enough to convince the flyer about the fastrunner’s change of alliances. Her voice was steady and decisive as she spoke to the leader she had already grown to respect.

“I do not regret anything I’ve done, Lenel. I wish we could have stayed as allies but that simply wasn’t possible anymore. But I know well that we are past talking at this point.” She said, looking at the outraged expression on the flyer’s face. Lenel’s voice trembled as she spoke to the younger dinosaur.

“That’s the only true thing you’ve ever told me, you spineless backstabber! I’ll make sure you’ll never deceive another poor soul ever again!” He cried as he charged forward, knowing full well that Ruby would attempt to dodge it and attempt to launch a counterattack afterwards but the seasoned fighter could immediately tell which way Ruby was heading and he didn’t hesitate to turn his attack in that direction. Ruby’s eyes widened as he saw Lenel’s assault and instinctually, she leapt backwards in a force that landed her on her back. Yet, Lenel’s attack didn’t stop there.

The flyer dashed towards Ruby from the air and just before the girl could get up, he kicked her with both of his feet before landing. The omnivore was sent rolling into the ground and at point, the victor of that uneven duel was already clear. Ruby had lost and it would only be a matter of seconds until Lenel would deliver his judgement for the fastrunner’s treachery.

All the thoughts swirling in his mind made the boy’s head ache as he forced himself through the dark skies. He was still more than frustrated by Ortin’s words and his inability to see things rationally. The bluish flyer was usually clever and loyal but there were times when talking to him felt like talking to a damn rock! How many times would he have to be right for Ortin to finally trust in his judgement? Despite Petrie’s lingering annoyance with the other male’s decision, he had to try to keep his focus on the task at hand.

Right now, finding Ruby was the most important thing as it could be a question of mere moments before Haste or Lenel would turn against her and at that point, no force would be able to save her. The boy prayed that none of that would come to pass as he forced himself forward, full well knowing that he wasn’t safe either as Haste had made it very clear that she didn’t want to see him anymore. That only made finding the fastrunner all the more urgent.

Petrie narrowed his eyes as he looked at the sight below him, knowing he’d have to lose some altitude if he wanted to have a chance at spotting the omnivore from the air. The cold winds made him shiver heavily but he knew he could only push forward and find Ruby as soon as possible. After he had made sure she was safe, he’d be able to turn back and attempt to make Ortin see sense. With any luck, he and all his friends would…

“Is the scent getting stronger, Orchid? Please tell me we are going the right way!” The flyer twitched noticeably as he heard that voice, immediately able to tell whom it belonged to. His earlier meeting with Ducky still felt like a distant, happy sleep story and he was more than happy to hear her voice again. And considering their earlier discussion, the target of the duo’s wasn’t a big secret. Petrie nodded happily as he heard Orchid’s answer.

“It indeed is! We’ll find her within minutes if we keep this up!” He answered, prompting Petrie to suddenly dash towards the duo in clear expectation. A wide smile appeared on his face as the two dinosaurs appeared from the darkness, yelping at them as he slowed down his speed.

“You talking about Ruby? You mean she’s out there somewhere?” He asked, not willing to stay here for too long while Ruby was out there alone with Lenel’s pawns. Ducky crossed her hands in happiness as she glanced at the male, not expecting to meet him again right now. However, seeing that her old friend was still alive was a massive relief to her and
she didn’t hide that as she gave her answer.

“Yes we are, Petrie! Orchid believes he got her scent! And it is so good to see you are still alive! I was already starting to worry you were… on the losing side of that terrible fight, I was.” She said with a cringe, immediately able to see that the other dinosaur wasn’t happy with the fight’s result. The male’s voice was heavy as he spoke.

“Me wasn’t on any side, really, but it was Lenel who lost. But Haste not any better either! Petrie hate to say it but all flyers expect me friends are terrible!” He said while cringing deeply. Ducky could see the depth of his regret but she knew that the time for a full explanation about that battle would have to wait further. Orchid decided to join the conversation as one thing bothered him deeply.

“Who are these friends of yours, Petrie? We need to know in case we happen to meet them!” He asked, causing Petrie to inhale deeply. He gave a simple, brief answer before deciding that his time here was coming to an end as Ruby needed his help.

“Their names Ortin and Glide and they flyers about Petrie’s age! Tell them you friends with Petrie and they’ll understand if you ever see them! But now, me have to go help Ruby! Come after me as me afraid she in bad trouble!” He yelled as he headed into the darkness, causing Ducky to raise her hand in slight protest before realizing it was too late. She sighed as she regretted not being able to speak with Petrie for longer but that couldn’t be helped. She turned at Orchid and spoke to him silently.

“You heard him! Let us follow him and do whatever we can to help him and Ruby!”

The omnivore breathed deeply as she looked at the pale flyer towering above her, gulping as she saw the expression on his face. It was a mix of anger, desperation and outrage which was filled with more pain than she could remember seeing in a long time. It was clear that Lenel was more than ready to finish this once and for all and the omnivore knew she couldn’t stop it anymore. She closed her eyes and spoke to her former leader with moist eyes.

“I’m sorry it came to this, Lenel. Just make it quick.” She said, already regretting the fact that it would all end like this. She had already been ready to take her own life before and it felt like a travesty that she’d die here by Lenel’s hand. She said her prayers for Arial in her mind, regretting it deeply that she wasn’t able to save her.

The girl’s heartfelt words stopped Lenel for a few fleeting moments, her genuine sadness breaking his resolve to deliver the killing blow. No matter how much he wanted to believe otherwise, he knew that Ruby wasn’t a murderous monster yearning for the blood of his mate but a hurt child who wanted nothing else than to help her sister. That thought was a concerning one for the male and for a moment, he wondered whether he could finish the task at hand.

However, it wasn’t long until Lenel found the resolve to move forward. While the omnivore might have had an understandable motive, she had still committed the crime of attempting to take his beloved away from him, ridding him of the only thing he had left and that was something he absolutely could not forgive. Lenel bowed towards Ruby, his expression softening slightly but to the fastrunner’s horror, his determination also returned.

“I guess you deserve that much, Ruby. I do not know what you’ve been through or what you really believe but I still want to believe you could have been a valuable ally in other circumstances. But attacking my mate is something I simply cannot forgive.” He said, causing Ruby to nod weakly. There was nothing more to be said here and that much was apparent to both of the dinosaurs. Ruby managed to say one more thing before the coming end.

“That doesn’t matter. If you truly cannot let me go, stop the damn bragging and get on with it!” She said, growing angered by Lenel’s hesitation. The flyer realized the girl’s point and raised his hand to end the fastrunner’s struggles once and for all… but before could land his blow, he yelped in sharp pain. The male lost his focus utterly for a moment and to her shock, Ruby saw a large rock dropping from the flyer’s cheek after first crashing at it in violent force. Ruby couldn’t even start to wonder about what had happened before she
heard a loud voice calling from the sky.

“Get away from Ruby, Lenel! Petrie will not ask twice!”

The younger flyer couldn’t believe his luck. Had he been only a few seconds later, he would have been too late to stop Lenel from killing Ruby. The older dinosaur turned to look at the boy, narrowing his eyes as he saw his persistent foe. He cursed silently, able to tell that his window of opportunity was starting to close. His voice was sharp as he cried at the other male.

“You simply do not know when to give up, Petrie. But this time, you are too late! I’ll show you that even with persistence, you will not be able achieve anything!” He yelled as he prepared to deliver the killing blow to the halftooth but to his shock, Ruby managed to stop his attack, having managed to free her left arm after Petrie’s intervention. Lenel couldn’t believe this turn of events and he decided to get over this setback by sinking his claws into Ruby’s legs, making the female cry in intense pain. And that pain was enough to break her defense, allowing him to finally hit at the fastrunner’s exposed neck… or he would have been able to hadn’t another thing gone the way he hadn’t wanted.

Lenel gasped terribly as he felt a powerful impact in his back. His eyes widened to their absolute limit and the flyer screamed horribly as Petrie’s beak sank into his upper back, forcing him back to his feet while holding new wound. The male’s face was a mask of pain as tried to look at the injury, seeing the blood flowing down his back at alarming rates. The pale flyer looked at Petrie with wide eyes, more than astonished by the boy’s attack. He had known Petrie to be a brave dinosaur but this was something he hadn’t expected. Lenel cringed in agony as he spoke to Petrie.

“You truly are Pterano’s nephew. Few flyers I’ve met would have headed to battle that brashly and courageously.” He said, not really able to hide his admiration of Petrie’s spirit. The boy panted in shock, not used to having his beak painted red by the blood of other dinosaurs. He knew he looked like a sight from his own sleep stories but this wasn’t the time to get overwhelmed by his own deeds. He looked at the older male and spoke to him with a pleading voice.

“Lenel… me hate you for what you’ve done but Petrie heard what you spoke about with Haste and… and she much worse than you. Me never expected that but now me know that there far more evil flyers than you. Me would like to see you dead because of uncle Pterano but me learn that no leader think about one of their followers. You deserve worse but if you leave Ruby and Ortin alone forever, Petrie let you go and not tell Haste just where you went.” He said, not really even believing he was saying those words. He had come here to see Lenel’s downfall but here he was giving him a chance to escape with his life. Haste’s atrocities had changed the boy’s way of thinking, now truly understanding that the pale flyer wasn’t a monster when it came to power-hungry leaders.

Lenel, on the other hand, wasn’t sure whether to respect the other flyer or whether to burst into loud laughter. He couldn’t help but truly respect the younger dinosaur’s arrogance but the comic aspect of his words wasn’t lost on the former leader either. How could a child like Petrie imagine he’d never surrender to their demands? Lenel’s voice trembled with
grim threat as he gave his answer.

“Oh, Petrie, Petrie, Petrie. I may be beaten but if you think you can command me, there’s another thing coming! I have lost a lot but I still have a modicum of self-r…”

“Ruby? It really is you! Hold on a little longer!” A new voice called, making Lenel narrow his eyes as he looked into the dark distance. He could hear that the speaker was very young, even more so than Petrie and his thoughts were immediately cut short by the younger flyer’s answer.

“Come quick, Orchid and Ducky! We need help!”

Ruby could feel her heart freezing as she heard that call. She could recognize her brother’s voice anywhere but it didn’t fill her with joy. Far from it. Why hadn’t he merely taken the hint and stayed away? Now he was here, putting his life at risk despite her direct orders against it! Immediately, her hands turned into fists as she saw her brother, along with Ducky, getting ripped apart by Lenel or Haste’s followers, crying for her to help him with his final, pained screams. She had sent them away to avoid this and her voice hid none of her inner anguish and disappointment over this interruption.

“Get out from here, Orchid! I sent you away for a reason!” She cried in a loud voice, not receiving an immediate answer from her brother. Lenel quickly turned at his mate and spoke to her sharply.

“Keep those pipsqueaks at bay while I finish this crap once and for all. My patience is quickly running out!” He yelled as he quickly resumed his attack on Ruby he cursed internally that he had lost his decisive advantage because of the endless interruptions. But he knew very well that he would be the victor here. He had overwhelmed Ruby once before and he’d do so again.

Ducky frowned as she tried to see just what was happening before herself. She could see a female flyer and Petrie closer to her and the pink hue in the distance could only belong to Ruby. The swimmer gasped as she saw a light-colored flyer battering the girl’s defenses and even from here, the swimmer could see that the fastrunner was in a severe disadvantage. She needed immediate help and she knew she could get it only from someone whose attack would come as a secret. The swimmer already regretted what she’d have to do as she still hated hurting any living creature but if the flyer wasn’t going to leave Ruby alone, then she had no choice! Ducky quickly glanced at the young fastrunner and spoke to him sharply.

“Orchid, I hate to ask you this but… go help Petrie. I will try to get closer alone in order to surprise that mean flyer, I will. Ruby needs an opening to escape from that fight and I will give it to her.” The girl said, making a highly uncertain look rise to the boy’s face. It was clear Orchid wasn’t particularly fond about that plan but he also knew that there was no time to argue here. He nodded at his companion, praying her plan would work.

“Okay, Ducky. Show that bastard what happens when you attack my sister!” He said, earning a swift nod from Ducky. The male looked somewhat sadly as the older dinosaur disappeared into the darkness, chills running up his spine.

Ruby looked at her opponent in surprise, astonished by the fact that his injury didn’t seem to slow him down any. She could see blood still flowing from the deep wound in his upper back but at least Lenel managed to hide the apparent pain masterfully. Ruby knew that the outcome of this fight wouldn’t end any differently than their first round as Lenel was simply far too skilled and powerful for her to best. A somber feeling rose to her mind as she slowly came to accept that she truly wouldn’t survive this encounter.

However, that didn’t mean that she’d accept her role from the previous fight. She’d take this struggle to Lenel, showing that she wouldn’t sell her life easily. The fastrunner decided to make her move before Lenel even began his own assault and it was clear she took the flyer off-guard. Lenel couldn’t even blink before he felt a new sting of pain in his upper abdomen. However, he had been through too many fights to surrender to that pain and he immediately turned towards Ruby, knowing she couldn’t dodge his own hit after attacking that greedily. The flyer grinned as he saw blood spurting from Ruby’s neck even if those wounds weren’t lethal.

The omnivore gasped at the flyer’s quick rebuke, not having expected even Lenel to have such swift and precise reflexes. Even then, she wouldn’t cede the momentum to the pale flyer because of one setback and she didn’t waste one moment before resuming her own assault. She tried to break Lenel’s defenses by hitting right at him but again, Lenel was one step ahead of the female. He replicated the halftooth’s assault, knowing that his weight would make that collision a disaster for the fastrunner.

Her eyes widened as Ruby felt her flying into the ground with a heavy force, looking at the skies in shock. This fight was going absolutely nowhere. She’d never beat Lenel and the way she was getting beaten was shocking to the omnivore. Yes, Lenel was far older and more experienced but Ruby had never thought of herself as a puny or absolutely useless fighter. Her breaths only quickened as he heard Lenel’s voice speaking to her.

“With some more training, you would have become a very tough opponent to beat, Ruby. You have the speed, courage and precision needed but you simply do not foresee the moves that will ruin your plans. It’s a shame, really, but you will never have the time to learn those skills. Now, get out of my sight, brat!” He cried but before he could deliver the blow, he was interrupted by a sharp stroke of pain in his hand. Lenel cursed deeply as he glanced at the new interruption, gasping slightly as he saw a swimmer hanging from his hand.

Ducky’s heart beat violently in her chest as her eyes met those of Lenel’s. She felt more than vulnerable as those rage-filled eyes seemed to look directly into her soul. Ducky knew more than well that her chances of resisting Lenel were even more unlikely than Ruby’s but even then, she didn’t regret her decision. She had brought herself in danger before because of her friends and that was something she wasn’t going to stop even if the said friend didn’t want her help. She’d hold on to her friendships until the end, now and forever.

The flyer, on the other hand, could hardly even begin to think about how many brats were going to stand between him and Ruby but this was one of the most pathetic ones yet. He had seen swimmers very seldom and even in those instances, they had been barely an obstacle on his path. The flyer’s voice shuddered as he spoke to the younger dinosaur, his voice shuddering with hate and rage.

“First, Petrie and that cursed baby killer brat come to interrupt me and now some bigmouth thinks she is worthy of challenging me? I’ve… had… enough… OF THIS CRAP!” He cried as he suddenly started to shake his hand in an attempt to make the swimmer lose her grip but Ducky was going to hold on until the end as she could see that every moment she bought made Ruby’s survival more likely. The fastrunner looked at that sight with wide eyes, alarm starting to overwhelm her mind. She cried at her old friend with a loud voice, her eyes showing the depth of her fear.

“Ducky, why didn’t you stay away? Just let of AND GET AWAY FROM HERE!” She screamed, knowing just how severe the danger facing the other girl was. The duo’s eyes met for a fleeting moment and Ducky wasted no time giving her answer, the situation not lost on her either.

“You cannot tell me to go away and not care about you anymore, no, no, no! Even if you think we are no longer friends, I will never give up on you or any else of my friends! Now, get away fr…” She cried but Lenel had finally heard enough. With one, violent move he grabbed Ducky’s tail and pulled her away from his hand. Ruby could see the terror on the swimmer’s face as Lenel turned towards a nearby wall of stone before slowly pulling the small dinosaur backwards, his intentions more than clear.

It was in this moment that Ducky realized that she was done for. Those few seconds seemed to stretch on forever as her dearest memories flowed through her mind, from the moment of Spike’s birth, the endless days in the Great Valley and her reunion with Ruby only a few weeks before. She could hardly even begin to think about what was happening but one thing she knew: she had done her duty as Ruby’s friend by saving her from Lenel. Now, it was time for her to join her dear brother in the Great Beyond. She was just about to cry something to Ruby before she felt Lenel throwing her forward with all his might. In that moment, one single thought appeared in her mind.

Ruby, Petrie, Littlefoot… goodbye. I hope you live better lives than I did, I do.

The omnivore could feel her heart stopping the moment she saw Ducky heading towards the wall of rocks, her entire mind unable to form one single thought as her entire consciousness was overwhelmed by fear. The moment Ruby saw her dear friend hitting the wall was one when Ruby felt like her world was coming apart. That hit was accompanied by a loud crunch and large parts of the wall were painted red by the swimmer’s blood. Ruby’s eyes were completely wide as she fell to her knees, tears falling from her eyes as she looked at the lifeless form of her old friend.

That sight wasn’t lost on the other belligerents either. The struggle between the severely wounded Sireia and Petrie came to a halt the moment the splash marking the end of one of the kindest dinosaurs to have ever lived reached their ears. The sounds of battle turned into complete silence as Petrie looked fearfully towards the sight next to Lenel, the darkness almost hiding the gruesome sights from his eyes but… only almost. The flyer’s blood ran cold as he saw his dear friend slowly dropping into the ground, her spirit already having left her body.

Suddenly, the sight of Ducky looking at his eyes after him dropping into dark hole the day they first met and the moment she had cheered him up after he had finally accepted his uncle’s faults… not to even mention the faith she had put in him during his preparation for the Great Day of the Flyers. The boy simply stared forward, tears starting to flow down his cheeks as the weather seemed colder than ever before. The swimmer had cheered him up by simply being there on this day and now… now…

It simply couldn’t be! The flyer had accepted Ducky’s death once before so why was he forced to do it all over again? His spirit was on the verge of falling before he finally locked his eyes on Lenel. It was he who was responsible for all of this! That cursed monster had taken everything from  Ortin and now he had stolen one of his oldest friends in one of the most profound displays of cowardice the boy had ever seen! Petrie’s inconsolable tears were soon mixed with deep trembling, the disdain he felt towards the pale flyer burning more powerful than the Bright Circle itself. The flyer cried at his other friend, his words nearly unintelligible due to the raw pain in his voice.

“COME ON, RUBY! LET US FINISH THIS MONSTER ONCE AND FOR ALL! LENEL, YOU DONE SO MANY BAD THINGS BUT THIS… THIS ME WILL NEVER FORGIVE! YOU’RE FOLLOWING HER HERE AND NOW!” He yelled but before he could move a muscle, another voice spoke to him and it would have shocked him deeply had the situation been any other.

“Yes, he will not see the light of morning but it will not be you who will do it. Gather next to that stone wall and do not make any extra movements until I give you the permission to do so!” Petrie immediately recognized Haste’s voice but right now, he was far from being in the mood to play her games. He immediately turned at the female and yelled at her in a tortured tone.

“Me no want to see you now, Haste! Petrie not have anything to say to other bad flyers or to them that ruin lives of my close friends and kill simply because they want power! Things already bad enough without you!” He cried, only afterwards realizing that he shouldn’t have said some of the things he had just said. It wasn’t long before his morbid thoughts were interrupted by the one dinosaur he hated more than anything.

“Follow me, Sireia! We have to get out of here now!” Lenel yelled, only now realizing his folly. He couldn’t care less about any swimmer but his petty quest for revenge had robbed him of the time he would have needed to get away from here before Haste made her appearance. If he had only ignored Ruby, he could be far away from here by now with Sireia. But now, he’d need a true miracle to save him and his mate and his mood only darkened further as he heard his mate’s beaten voice.

“I’m sorry, my love. I couldn’t run for one longneck length let alone all the way away from this cursed land.” She said, the implications of those words apparent in her voice. She was already mentally beaten, knowing that all of her dreams had been crushed in just one hour. She was still somewhat warmed by her mate’s clear concern for her and his willingness to make those who hurt her pay but it was all over now. It was clear by now what this night’s outcome would be.

The female’s answer seemed to stop Lenel’s world completely, not willing to accept what he had just heard. As long as he could remember, Sireia had never been one to give up no matter how bleak the situation was. To see her now accepting defeat… it also broke the male’s will as well. The pale flyer looked at the sight around himself, looking glumly as Haste’s remaining followers surrounded him and cut all of his possible escape routes. Lenel frowned deeply as Haste landed in front of him, the victorious flyer hiding her triumphalism rather well.

“This is the end of your escape, Lenel. though, I give it to you that you had a good run.” She said but Lenel wasn’t on the mood to argue with the traitor. He slowly raised his gaze at the female and after a few seconds of waiting, he cried at her in rage.

“Well, what are you waiting for?! Kill me and claim your victory! This time I have no possible tricks anymore, as you can see.” He said while spreading his hands, willing to escape this soul-crushing moment of defeat. He had went through many terrible moments in his life but this… being forced to wait for his own and his mate’s deaths… this was by far the worst.

Haste approached her own leader and cocked her head slightly. Yes, Lenel no longer had any hopes of escaping but he could still cause her more trouble if he killed himself before revealing the secret to unlocking Olres’ secret. The somewhat respecting tone in her voice wasn’t lost on Lenel.

“Even if I usually detest those who choose to fight unfairly and escape from a fair duel, I am willing to overlook all of that for the overall valorous fight you put up on this day, Lenel. I just have to find out one question and I’ll give you a quick death and I’ll even tell the herd that you died fighting for what you believed was right.” She said, making Lenel look at her with narrow eyes. He was far too sickened by this entire situation to even give the female’s words any thought and he merely asked the obvious question in the driest way possible.

“And what would that be, Haste? I have nothing more to lose.” He stated the fact that was clear to everyone and Haste frowned as she heard those words. She took another step towards Lenel and spoke almost threateningly as she gave her answer.

“Don’t act stupid, Lenel. We both know that I mean the key to receiving Olres’ powers. And don’t give me any “you are not worthy!“ answers anymore!” She stated sharply, making Lenel roll his eyes.

It all felt like some kind of joke. Lenel had already forgotten all about Olres despite him dedicating his entire life to becoming his successor. Only now did he realize the clear fact that had laid in front of him this entire time: he never needed his ancestor’s gift, he only needed what he had had for countless seasons. Lenel knew he’d give up his position and all claims to Olres’ legacy if he only could live up a quiet, simple life with Sireia… but it was too late now. In a way, the pale flyer was almost eager to reveal that secret to the female as maybe there was a chance that it could destroy her as it had destroyed him. He didn’t waste any time giving his answer.

“That answer is easy to give, Haste! You remember the pond near the spot we started the fight? Just drink from it and you’ll receive Olres’ powers.” He said, making Haste look at him oddly. She looked deep into his eyes, clearly not yet happy with Lenel’s words.

“Somehow, I have trouble believing you’d tell this to me after the first time I ask.” He said, making Lenel spit into the ground in disgust. His voice trembled with disdain at himself, his never-ending follies and the disaster his entire life had been. It was clear to everyone present that he spoke nothing but the truth as he gave his tense answer.

“As I said, I have no reason to hide any part of the answer, Haste! In case you didn’t notice it, I immediately headed towards it in order to claim that gift to myself! Your own followers can confirm that much to you!” He cried, looking at the two flyers still alive who had blocked his path to victory. One of them looked at Haste and spoke to her in a silent voice.

“He speaks the truth, Haste. He tried to desperately reach the pond before we stopped him.” He said, causing Haste to bring her hand to her chin, thinking about what she had just heard. She was hesitant to believe Lenel this easily but… why in earth would one of her own trusted allies lie to her? Besides, the pale flyer was right in saying that he wouldn’t win anything by lying to her at this point. Deep down, she was starting to believe that her natural suspicion no longer served any true purpose and after a few seconds of thinking, she made her decision. A victorious smile rose to her face as she looked at Lenel’s eyes, more than excited to get to action. Her voice, however, carried no hint of lingering hate towards the male and despite her apparent cheer, she acted more gracefully than Lenel had suspected.

“Very well. I believe you, Lenel. I can not take the risk that you might escape in my absence so your journey comes to an end here and now. But as I promised, your deaths will be quick! My followers, do it!”

Those words made Ruby’s head ache even more than before. On one hand, she was beyond happy that Lenel faced his end but she would have wanted to do it herself and she would have wanted to make her former leader suffer before his death! Usually Ruby would have just let that urge pass but she simply could not allow this to happen! She quickly ran towards Haste and yelled at her with teary eyes.

“You can’t let him go this easily! HE MURDERED DUCKY FOR ANCESTRORS’ SAKE! HE DESERVES, FAR, FAR W…” She yelled but she was quickly beaten into the ground by Haste’s followers. She tried to fight them off but it was all hopeless. She wouldn’t be able to prevent the coming execution.

Petrie wasn’t feeling any better and he looked in complete astonishment at Ruby and what the flyers were doing to her. He would have wanted nothing more than to join her in the protest but… but he couldn’t bring himself to do it. Something within this entire debacle made him feel more powerless than he could remember feeling ever before. He hadn’t been able to save Ducky, he wouldn’t be able to bring Lenel the punishment he truly deserved… he wouldn’t be able to do anything. The boy fell to his knees, crying silently as he tried to prevent himself from collapsing into the ground completely.

Sireia looked at her mate warmly, grabbing his hand as Haste’s followers closed in upon them. She was surprisingly ready for this and she didn’t feel real panic as her last seconds passed on slowly. Yes, she and her mate had mate countless mistakes and ones that she couldn’t forgive even to herself. Yet, she knew that both she and her mate had done their best in all the situations of their lives and that was enough for her. As long as she stayed on the male’s side, she was happy with whatever fate came their way.

Her mate didn’t truly disagree. He was content to fall by Sireia’s side but… but his conscience wasn’t completely clear. Yes, he no longer even cared about Olres’ gift but the long path he had gone through to win the spirits’ approval… it had all been for nothing. After the terrible vision just before Stealth’s attack, Lenel thought he had been practically reborn as a new, more compassionate and more worthy leader but… but this fight had proven him wrong.

Not only had he been unable to convince Petrie and Ortin of his change but he had also tried to use deceit and lies against those he had hurt severely. He had been unable to save his followers and it had been his mistakes that had enabled Haste’s victory! And perhaps worst of all, he had given in to his inner rage towards Ruby for hurting Sireia and by doing so, doomed both himself and his beloved mate to this death. Finally, by killing the swimmer he had only made sure that his final legacy would be only more pain and suffering. His regret was mirrored in his whisper to the female.

“I’ve done nothing but failed time and time again, Sireia. But… but I couldn’t be more grateful to you for sticking with me all the way. You can never know just how much it has meant to me.” He said, nuzzling his beak with the other flyer. Sireia allowed a single tear flow down from her right eye as he embraced the male, speaking to him in a sad but warm voice.

“It was my pleasure, Lenel. I wouldn’t have wanted for it to be in any oth…” She said but before she could finish, Haste’s followers sliced both Lenel and Sireia’s throats open, the two flyers’ bodies collapsing into the ground side by side, leaving the two flyers in an eternal embrace with each other. The flyer who had relentlessly spent his entire life seeking a new golden age for the flyers and who had given up everything for that goal, as well as Ducky’s killer, was gone.

Petrie shivered deeply as he looked at that sight, mere emptiness filling his heart as he thought about it all. The monster who had taken Ducky away from him was gone but… so was Ducky. Ortin would be overjoyed to learn about Lenel’s passing and the pale flyer would never lead the flyers but… but none of that would bring his dear friend back. He turned around as he cried deeply, not wanting to see any of the other flyers right now.

As opposed to the flyer, Ruby sat down on a nearby rock, burying her head between her hands, looking before herself with wide eyes that were not really looking at anything. The exact thing she had feared had come to pass. She had sent Ducky away simply to ensure her safety but here she was, lying lifeless in the ground. Also, the fastrunner simply couldn’t believe that she had ever respected the beast who had dared to do that to the swimmer. It all seemed like a bad sleep story but there was no way around it: she had ruined Ducky’s life as well and she would be the next of her loved ones who was now dead because of her. Ruby’s head slowly dropped downwards, the girl not even finding the strength to keep it in the normal position.

However, the scene wasn’t one of utter sadness, at least not to one certain flyer. A smile crept to Haste’s face as she looked at Lenel’s corpse, hardly able to believe it. The flyer she had wanted to overthrow for so very long was dead within her feet and now she had something she had never even looked for: the key to Olres’ powers! However, there was one, small detail that had to be taken care of before she could claim her reward. The female slowly approached Petrie, not caring about his loss in the least. Her voice was a menacing one and it was immediately clear to the boy what this conversation was going to be about.

“Now, Petrie, what was it about me ruining the lives of your friends and me being a bad flyer? I truly hope you’re not speaking about Ortin, now are you?” She said, looking right the male’s eyes. Petrie was far too broken to immediately be able to hide his true thoughts. The male’s eyes radiated with disdain at the female and he realized his mistake only after he knew it was too late. He could see the determination within Haste’s eyes and the younger flyer realized that he couldn’t explain his way out of this mess anymore. He stepped forward and cried right at the other dinosaur.

“Me indeed was, Haste! You kill his father and Nimble and it your fault Lenel did what he did! YOU NOT WORTHY OF LEADING EVEN ONE FLYER!” He yelled, earning slightly confused looks from some of Haste’s followers. The female took a weak smile as she finally broke her eye contact with Petrie, knowing that this conversation was over once and for
all. She quickly turned around and cried at her host with a loud voice.

“Finish these brats once and for all! Petrie is willing to spread Lenel’s lies even after his death and Ruby fought for that bastard as well. I’m sure the younger egg stealer is in league with them as well but I am needed elsewhere. But do not worry, I will be back soon enough, my faithful followers, after I take the power Lenel never could!” She cried as she took off and the time seemed to stop around Petrie as the other flyers’ gazes locked upon him and his companions, signaling to the boy that he was running out of time.

An audible gulp could be heard as Ruby looked around herself, knowing this was it. The flyers would never disobey Haste’s command and there were too many of them for her to ever shake them off from her tail. To think her march of constant loss would end like this… Well, at the very least she had managed to avenge her parents but Arial would remain lost, perhaps forever. And to think Orchid would die here as well… The omnivore’s pain suddenly turned into blind fury as she realized just how wrong all of this truly was. She attacked one of the flyers nearest to her, kicking her into the ground and crushing her neck before anyone else could react to her sudden rampage. Her voice was that of endless pain and hurt as she moved to face another opponent.

“You will not take me or my brother easily, you damn killers! I’LL TAKE AS MANY OF YOU AS I DAMN SURE CAN!” She yelled, noticing that Petrie seemed to suddenly find newfound will to fight as well. However, then happened something she had never expected to see. The two flyers in front of her were suddenly rammed to the ground, revealing someone who had quite literally returned from the Great Beyond itself. The fastrunner raised her hands to her mouth in utter shock as she looked at the scarred but familiar face in front of herself. She hardly even heard his words in the midst of her surprise.

“I know what you think, Ruby, but there’s no time to speak now! Let’s get your brother before anything worse happens! Petrie, try to get out of here! I know you can do it!” Littlefoot yelled encouragingly, earning a haunted look from the flyer. Yes, he had known about the longneck’s survival but he hadn’t expected to see him here fighting this quickly. But after hearing his usual friendly and uplifting voice after all this time, Petrie knew he simply couldn’t let him down. He suddenly grabbed a stone from the ground and threw it right at one of the nearby flyers, the pain clearly making it difficult for him to concentrate for a short while. Petrie quickly rose into the air, hoping to get away from his foes as quickly as possible.

Yet, that plan seemed to fail when the boy suddenly felt one of his legs being grabbed by one of the other flyers and Petrie’s heart skipped a beat as he realized that if he was pulled back into the ground, he’d be a goner without a doubt. Instinctually, he impaled the other dinosaur’s hand with his beak, breaking free from his grasp but also plunging towards the ground in the process. For a fleeting moment, Petrie thought he’d be a goner… but not once did he forget all the tricks he had learned over the seasons. He quickly somersaulted in the air, only barely managing to avoid hitting the ground before he headed back towards the skies. Now, he’d have to lose his chasers which would be far from easy…

The longneck’s heart swelled as he and Ruby made their way towards Orchid. To think he had already given up when there were still many of them alive… Being proved wrong about that was more than he had ever dared to hope for and he couldn’t help but thank any benevolent force that had allowed him to be here just in time to save his friends from this terrible mess. He could never have believed that his mother came to him once more to guide him forward but here he was. He could feel the same surprised shock within Ruby but catching up would have to wait for a little longer. Though, there was some deep sorrow within the fastrunner whose source he couldn’t quite recognize just yet.

The flyers were clearly thrown out of guard as the longneck charged his way through them, stopping only in front of Orchid, knowing they didn’t have much time before the flyers would be able to regroup and finish this once and for all and that urgency was apparent in his voice as he spoke to the other boy.

“Get on my back, Orchid! We have to get away from here!” The longneck cried, the fastrunner looking at his battered form in slight fear. He didn’t know just who he was looking at as they had never met face-to-face and as far as he knew, Littlefoot was long gone. Besides, the many injuries and scars the longneck had received unnerved him but Ruby’s next words showed him that the time for hesitation had passed.

“That’s Littlefoot, Orchid! You can trust him and he’ll take you away from here! Don’t hesitate any more!” She commanded, knowing that her brother would have an easier time riding the longneck than her. The young omnivore nodded in surprise and quickly jumped on Littlefoot’s back, immediately prompting the latter to turn around and yell at his companions.

“Now, let’s get out of here! We have to lose the flyers if we want to live!”

Haste’s heart beat heavily as the small pond appeared below her, knowing that the time of her ascension was fast approaching. Now, no one and nothing stood between her and her goal and if there was any truth to Lenel’s claims, she wouldn’t only rule Lenel’s old herd but possibly all the flyers in this world! A wide smile appeared on her face as she prepared to land, speaking to herself triumphantly.

“Well, sister, would you finally admit that you always were the weaker one of us. Soon, I’ll wield power you never even dreamed of in your dumb, unambitious mind…” She said, the many Cold Times of her waiting for Nira to use her position to really achieve something great returning to her mind. She could only congratulate herself for finally gathering the strength to get rid of her foolish sibling and finally claim the respect she had destined to achieve.

The female hardly even noticed the cold as her feet sank into the ground sparkles, looking at the pond glimmering weakly in the darkness. That glimmer was slowly getting reinforced by the spirits that were starting to gather around the new leader, clearly willing to observe this momentous occasion. Haste looked at them briefly before spreading her arms and yelling at them while laughing almost hysterically.

“I bet you thought I’d never prove myself worthy of your powers, you fools! Watch now as I prove myself to be more capable to lead all the flyers than that fool Lenel was!” She yelled as she bowed towards the black waters, taking some of the liquid to her hands and gulping it down eagerly.

“Run a bit faster, Littlefoot and Ruby! They gaining on us!” Petrie yelled in fear, looking as the flyers dashed through the night. The head start he and his friends had received was quickly being undone and Haste’s followers were less than one longneck length away from the two landwalkers. It was getting clear for the boy that the tide was again turning against him and his friends.

That fact wasn’t lost on Ruby either. She could hardly even outrun Littlefoot with her legs half-buried in the ground sparkles and she was growing ever more desperate as the seconds dragged on. Again, things seemed completely hopeless and even if Littlefoot’s sudden appearance had created newfound hope within her, everything that had happened raised a new thought into her head. Here she had an opportunity to repay some of her debt to all of those who had lost their lives because of her. With a low growl, the fastrunner cried at the longneck on her left.

“Go on, Littlefoot, and take Orchid to safety! I’ll hold those flyers in bay for long enough for you to get away!” She cried as she turned around, more than prepared to giver her all to hold her chasers at bay as long as she could. The girl knew she could stop only a few of the flyers and hold those few at bay for only a few seconds buy maybe, just maybe, that would be enough to save her friends from this sickening end.

Orchid’s eyes widened as he turned to look at his sister, not really able to grasp just what he was seeing. Here his beloved sibling was about to sacrifice her life for him and she thought he’d simply watch it all happen? The boy looked at Littlefoot who was equally horrified by what was happening, crying at the longneck from the top of his lungs.

“Turn around, now! We’ve got to help Ruby!” He yelled to the other boy, causing Littlefoot to slow down slightly. He was more than shaken by this turn of events, not really knowing what to do. He knew that in any normal situation, he would have rushed to help the fastrunner without any second thoughts but… in that case, Orchid’s chances of survival would be close to zero as well. He didn’t want to lose any more of his old friends but…

“Just go, Littlefoot! If you don’t, we’ll all die for nothing!” She screamed, causing Littlefoot to nod weakly. Tears started to flow from his eyes as he yelled back at the girl.

“Farewell, Ruby, and thanks… thanks for everything! I’ll get Orchid away from here!” He cried, his heart beating in his chest as he moved on. He could hear the younger boy screaming something on his back but he no longer listened to what he had to say. This would turn out to be but a continuation to his life of endless tragedies.

Petrie cringed as he heard the three dinosaurs crying far below himself, not really able to recognize the words in the middle of the chase, forced to put every last bit of his concentration on using every breath of the wind to his advantage. However, he had no doubts that his friends wouldn’t shout at each other if there was anything good happening down there. Knowing well what it would most likely be about, the flyer headed towards the ground, willing to prove himself wrong. The boy gritted his teeth as he looked for his friends, seeing just what was happening after a few moments of searching.

The flyer had hoped he’d be wrong about what was going on but he now saw that was only wishful thinking. Ruby was getting surrounded and slowly overwhelmed by a group of other flyers, a sight that nearly made Petrie forget his own peril. He knew very well that Ruby was going to die in order to save her friends, a thought that made Petrie despair and somewhat relieved at the same time. He didn’t want to see another one of his old friends head into the Great Beyond but… it was good to see Ruby was still herself and not some other dinosaur he couldn’t recognize. The boy’s voice was filled with deep sorrow but also gratitude as he called at the omnivore.

“Thanks for doing this, Ruby! Me make sure me never forget you!” He yelled before starting to regain altitude, knowing that he had seen his dear friend for the very last time.

The dark-colored flyer listened to her heart beating wickedly as she rose to her full height, glancing at the sight around her as she felt the mysterious waters flowing down his throat. A deep smile rose to her face as she felt the newfound strength and determination flow to every part of her body and the fact that more and more of the spirits were gathering around her only proved her triumph. The female laughed as she yelled at the ghosts, not able to hide her excitement.

“I’ve done it! Now, I’m every bit as powerful as Olres was in his time and because of that, I order all of you to recognize me as your master! Hesitate and you w…” She started but before could finish, Haste could feel a choking pressure all around her neck, making it impossible for her to speak or breath. The female’s smile turned into a look of dread as the
voices started to suddenly rumble within her head, feeling as if they were tearing her entire mind apart.

“The day we bow to you will be the one the one flyers like you no longer exist! You are the exact kind of dinosaur we have been bound to protect this gift from!” They said, easing
their grip on the female slightly, just enough to allow her to answer.

“B… but I did everything you asked me to! And I sure am more worthy than Lenel and apparently you had decided he’d be able to claim his reward!” She cried, her fear intensifying as she felt the newfound powers leaving her body again. It was clear that the spirits weren’t planning to let her escape this mess alive. She started to shudder slightly as she heard the answer within her mind.

“We never meant to give you what you wanted but there was always a chance for you to claim Olres’ legacy. Yes, we already promised it to Lenel and we were about to make a terrible mistake with him. We already thought he was becoming the flyer that was ready to take up this task but his fight with you proved us wrong. He remained far too ready to give up to his inner rage and sacrifice anyone and anything to further his goals. But we allowed him to go on as we never want to interfere in the matters and struggles of the living.” They said, only deepening Haste’s fear. The female’s headache only deepened as he was slowly getting shrouded in the bright light. She hardly even understood the next words in the middle of all the turmoil going on within her.

“You, on the other hand, don’t even have that flicker of greatness Lenel did! You are just a shameless backstabber who would never do anything good for those following you nor to any other dinosaur! You ceded all the goodness within you the moment you betrayed Nira and manipulated Lenel to do your dirty work! You decided your fate when you drank from those sacred waters as no one can extract its powers from you and neither can we let you leave with them! May this serve as a punishment for every evil deed you’ve done, Haste!” The voices said, the confusion with the flyer starting to turn into physical pain.

For any outsider witnessing the sight, it would have looked like the flyer was turning into a pillar of brilliant light. It slowly engulfed the new leader completely, causing her to scream in utter agony as the mystical power disintegrated her body piece by piece. And in the middle of all that, there wasn’t one small thought of regret within the female, only bitterness and outrage. The pillar grew only more intense by the second… until it suddenly disappeared altogether… along with Haste who was never seen again.

The fastrunner’s breaths grew more forced by the second as she received more and more hits all around her. She knew she had only a few more moments until she’d fall under the flyers’ onslaught. Tears started to form within her mind as she thought about the misery of it all but at the very least, she’d soon be able to join Ducky in the Great Beyond and finally find some peace from all the terrible things that had happened because of her. Ruby locked eyes with one of the flyers, deciding that she’d attempt to take him at least with her. With a desperate sigh, she prepared for her final attack… until the night seemed to turn into a day within one, single second.

The battle seemed to stop immediately as off the combatants turned to look at the massive glow of brightness that illuminated the entire plain with its radiance. All of them looked at the sight in clear astonishment but it wasn’t long before the flyers seemed to suddenly become distressed by something. It was as if they were going some severe headache and when the glow suddenly stopped, one of the flyers yelled at the others in horror.

“Did you hear that as well? Let’s get away from here, NOW!” He yelled and none of the other flyers seemed to dispute those words. Ruby looked after them with wide eyes, not able to believe any of it. The girl had no idea what they had heard but one thing she did know was that the battle for the Land of the Dancing Waters was over. And she was still
alive.

Yes, there was a lot to take in in this chapter. With Haste and Lenel’s deaths, the power struggle is over at last as is the fight for Olres’ legacy. Where does this leave our heroes and after losing another of their dear friends, how will Littlefoot, Petrie and Ruby move forward from their most terrifying adventure thus far?

From now on, there are only one or more chapters coming for this story. It’s an odd feeling to finally have Separate Ways in a point where only the epilogue remains to be done but I’m more than happy to wrap this fic in the way it deserves. I hope that you found this chapter worthy of serving as this story’s climax as I understand I might have done controversial decisions in it as well. Anyway, see you next time and I hope you all have a great 2020!

Anagnos: It’s true that many of the characters would want nothing less than to fight each other but I had wanted to show that somehow confrontations like these are unavoidable. Especially Petrie and Ruby’s disagreements are very profound but luckily to them, Haste showed them a way forward without confronting each other as pure enemies. I just hope I continued that plotline well enough in this installment as well.

Also, I’m happy you found the revelation about Haste’s plot surprising as that was something I had planned for a long time. I had wanted to imply her to be a minor villain but in truth, a lot of Lenel’s worst actions had actually been done because of the events she had put forward. As for your comment about the focus, yes, I can see there would have been more potential for exploring the characters’ thoughts but the chapter was rather long as it is. I just hope this new installment is more to your liking but anyway, thanks for the review!

The Rhombus: Yep, as I said to Anagnos, the motivations were something I wanted to get right. Ruby’s motives certainly changed completely as did Petrie’s even if the former’s change of heart came for other reasons. I’m glad you found me splitting the chapter justified as together these two would have crossed nearly 30k words which would have too much. As for the ending, I can only hope it was a satisfactory one.

Well, after being sick with the flu for a couple of weeks, I'm back to review pretty much the whole final showdown in general.

The battle really seemed to be one-sided in favor of Lenel, and then Haste suddenly turns the tables. The ending to chapter 53 was probably the biggest cliffhanger in the entire story as Petrie finally learns just how twisted and murderous Haste truly is, and he is left wondering if his whole quest really was for nothing. The feeling of being completely lost and without any direction, the despair is so genuine that I was expecting he'd turn around and abandon all hope for anything he had left as if he had no point in continuing on.

As for this chapter, everything has escalated into all-out war and treachery. As everything descends into bloodshed, it becomes clear that everyone is only there for their own goals, regardless of others' desires.  No one will stop at anything to get what they want, even if it means killing everyone in sight.

I was afraid Ortin would not take kindly to Petrie's revelation, but now he seems to be making a foolish mistake. I couldn't imagine the danger he was putting himself in just to stop Haste, obviously having no strength to do it because of being too young and vulnerable. I won't be surprised if this is the last we see of Ortin ... or Glide, considering I never saw her in this chapter.

And then, just when it seems that things are finally about to turn in favor of the children, that sudden moment that so nearly gave me a heart attack. For Owls' sake, I'm not going to reveal that since he's so far behind.

And all this time, we all believed Lenel was the complete monster, but now we can finally see Haste for the complete, twisted beast she really is. It was so stunning to see how the truth came out in front of everyone and for the kids to learn all the deeds she was responsible for, especially all the death and destruction she brought to the world. You've really proven yourself a master at the mystery genre, to an extent. There's nothing better than an epic story filled with lies and deceit.

I pretty much had my head hung low when the final scene began. All hope was pretty much lost, and Haste was going to become the most powerful dinosaur in the world, but all that hopelessness is so suddenly turned upside down as even the Gods see this evil Flyer as completely unworthy of Olres' power and not deserving to live. The Indiana Jones-esque fate she received was just incredible. It's not just that such a villain as evil as her deserves such an excruciating, painful death, but the unique way it was executed was just astounding as we watch her disappear from the face of the Earth.

All in all, this finale was one of the most astounding battles I've ever seen in LBT fanfiction history, and like you said, it will be intriguing to see how the survivors finally leave this adventure behind for good and come to terms with all the death and bloodshed they have been forced to endure.
Suddenly, I've written so many fanfics that I can't possibly list them all! :P

There certainly was a lot to unravel in the climax of this story. This desperate battle between the different factions has now finally come to a rather abrupt end, and the chapter seems to mostly follow the same dynamic as the previous one, albeit the final sequence marks the end of the conflict in the Land of the Dancing Waters. Clearly, this entire strife has been the foundation of profound misfortune and distress for the characters left alive to survive the aftermath.

There were numerous pinnacle moments in this chapter, filled to the brim with remorse and heartfelt grief that ultimately will always stay with them until the day they join their deceased friends in the afterlife. It was exceptionally difficult to watch one more member of the Gang put to eternal rest by Lenel’s own hand, and I believe this is a part that is the starting point to shape the future for the remainder of the gang once they have time to contemplate everything that has happened to them in such a short amount of time that has changed their entire friendship and bond conclusively.

Essentially an important sequence was undoubtedly Lenel’s reflection on how wrong he truly was from the very start of the journey to obtain what he believed to be his by right. In fact, his unspoken speculation on how different things would have been if he hadn’t been such an ambitious flyer genuinely managed to express his remorse for the atrocities he committed all in the name of acquiring the power his ancestors left behind. This was a moment that succeeded showing us a broken flyer and relatable individual whose intentions might not have been cruel, but they certainly molded into one after every action he took throughout the story. Plausible fact here is that ambition may frequently end up being the very downfall of the person in question.

In a similar manner, arrogance and ambition often misguide desperate individuals for power to wind up in a rather difficult standing, specifically when Haste’s ambition ultimately is the very reason for her due demise at the hands of the ghosts she was so desperate prove to be just as suitable as Lenel for Olres’ legacy. Their way to deliver this message to her was one that I took great pleasure in as this fate is exactly what Haste deserved in the end. This was another great example of what greed for power can ultimately cause for a person desperate enough to do everything in their power to make this transition possible. I would like to believe that this will be the end of the Gang’s hardships, but I have a feeling that it won’t be that easy for them to cope with once they leave this wretched land behind them. This was a superb conclusion to the battle and I will be ecstatic to learn how this story will ultimately wrap up in the following final chapters. It certainly has been a long and rough ride for everyone, but it isn’t over yet.

The path of ambition is often paved with the bones of its victims, and it often leads to a bloody end.  This sentiment was confirmed by this chapter as, ultimately, all of the ambitious flyers have now been destroyed.  Though this fate did not come to pass without Lenel being treated to one last betrayal.  Now the Battle in the Land of Dancing Waters is over and with it the ultimate source of the misfortune that the gang has experienced up until this point.  I can only hope that the survivors can find some solace in the peace to come, as they have been through a soul-crushing ordeal through nearly the entirety of this story.

What we see in the beginning of this chapter is in many ways the culmination of the plots, counter-plots, and reactions that have been developing for much of the story.  With every person seeking their own goals, whether it be revenge, the acquisition of power, or to save a comrade, it was inevitable that these goals would clash in unexpected ways.  In many ways Ruby nearly met the same fate as Lenel in her single-minded pursuit only being saved at the last moment by the downfall of one of the protagonists.  Whereas poor Ducky seems to have met a terrible end in the process of defending those she loves.  In a world where the ulterior motives of others is not completely known, nor all unintended consequences can be perceived, tragedy can result from even the most noble of intentions.  Now the survivors must make sense of what they have lost and to come to peace with their respective mistakes and decisions.

I think this chapter expertly handled the conclusion of the battle, and portrayed the confusion of conflict while not making its proceedings incomprehensible to the reader.  The pacing was frenzied, which matched the action, whereas some of the actions of the characters came as a surprise, which is to be expected in such high-stakes events where seconds matter and people make gut decisions.  Though it was dark and foreboding, I do look forward to seeing what happens in the aftermath of this battle.  It has been a long journey for everyone involved and it will be interesting to see where they go from here.

A Pale and Cold Dawn

Ortin’s eyes widened as he looked at the other flyer in front of him rise to his wings and head towards the skies. He had been only moments away from slaughtering the boy but here he was, escaping from the scene as if he was being threatened by a herd of adult threehorns. The bluish dinosaur could hardly believe his luck as he had already been prepared to meet his end here. If that had been the price to keep his friend safe, that would have been a price he would have paid without any second thoughts.

Inside, the male could only guess that his foe’s escape had to have something to do with the flash of light that had illuminated the entire field only a few seconds earlier. Whatever had driven Haste’s pawns away, Ortin knew he had to be more than grateful for it. He had made it… even if his quest had been a failure. He sighed deeply as he turned to look at the sight behind himself, speaking softly.

“It’s okay now, Glide. They’re gone.” He said as he looked at the cover of the ground sparkles suddenly break as Glide’s head appeared from under it. The girl looked at her friend in surprise, not really able to believe what was going. The flyer’s walking was forced and slow because of the injuries she had received which had also been the reason for her hiding in the face of the battle. Her voice shuddered as she asked the obvious question.

“Wh… what happened? What was that flash and where did the other flyer go?” She asked, causing Ortin to cross his arms on his chest and speak in a silent voice. It was clear he was still overcome by the shock of the battle but his  breaths were growing easier by the second.

“I do not know. He escaped immediately after the flash but I do not have any idea what caused it. But what matters is that you’re safe.” He said, causing the girl to sigh deeply before her expression grew more tense and angered. Her voice trembled as she spoke to her friend.

“Why, Ortin? Why did you come back to me? Why didn’t you go stop Lenel? And where is Petrie?” She asked threateningly, not really liking Ortin’s appearance in the least. Of course she was grateful to him for saving her but stopping Lenel would have been far more important! Ortin cringed deeply at those words, not liking the answer any more than the girl did.

“Glide… you do not know the whole truth about what has happened within our herd. Haste is at least as terrible as Lenel and I tried to head after her but… but my efforts failed when her followers found me before I found her. I shook those fools off but I was unable to find Haste again. I tried to do just that but after I found that one flyer searching something here, I decided that I had to make sure he wouldn’t find you. I… I wouldn’t want to lose you as you’re the only friend who has always been there for me.” He said, cursing his inability to get to Haste. He would have been willing to trade his life for hers at any moment but he had never got that chance.

The boy’s words hit Glide more than she had expected. Yes, it was true that she and Ortin had been through a lot and inside, she couldn’t imagine life without him. The more she thought about it, the more she realized she would have done the same in the boy’s position and she couldn’t help but feel happy about the male’s kind words. Her voice was surprisingly soft as she gave her answer.

“Why… thank you, Ortin. You’ve been a good friend as well. But… do you have no idea about what happened to Petrie and Lenel?” She asked, making the male shook his head weakly. However, his expression wasn’t downtrodden in the least and it was even encouraging.

“I do not but the battle is over and if either Lenel or Haste had won, we’d know about it by now. Are you ready to go search for him?” He asked cheerfully, more than eager to see what had happened. Glide took a deep breath as she looked at the other flyer, her voice a weary one as she gave her answer.

“Soon, Ortin. But first, tell me everything you know about Haste. I always felt there was something seriously wrong with her.” She said, not willing to be kept in the dark about what had happened. Ortin sighed slightly, knowing he owed Glide as much and then he started to recite the tale Petrie had told him.

“Ruby!? Are you still there? Please answer Petrie!”

The fastrunner hardly heard those words as she slowly fell to her knees. She didn’t want to make the flyer more miserable than he likely was right now but she couldn’t muster the strength to answer him. Yes, she had survived but she had failed once again. Ducky was dead and she had lost her only chance to ever return Arial from wherever she was right now. Tears started flowing into the ground as she thought about the misery of all, slowly mixing with the blood trickling from her many wounds. Her breaths grew weaker as she heard Littlefoot’s voice in the distance.

“Where are you, Ruby? We’re safe now!” He yelled but again, the fastrunner found no strength to give her answer. She hardly even noted Petrie’s next call even if he was barely one longneck’s length away from her anymore.

“Here she is but she not answer to Petrie! Come quick!” He yelled as he headed towards the fastrunner. He could immediately see she was still alive and not even on the brink of death as he landed besides her. The flyer moved in front of Ruby and looked her directly at the eyes, speaking to her weakly. The boy was more than worried for her and it was more than apparent in his voice.

“Me sorry we left you alone but… you ask us to leave. Petrie…” He started before getting interrupted, his own words twisted by the immense amounts of sorrow that filled his heart because of Ducky. He knew that was the main reason for Ruby’s sadness but he shared that pain as well. There had to be something else within her mind and Petrie was more than worried about what that something would be.

Ruby, on the other hand, was far from willing to answer that question. She was still annoyed by Petrie’s unwillingness to help her before even if she knew he had his own, very good reasons, to oppose her. But the flyer knew nothing about what she had gone through and she didn’t have the strength needed to go through all of that again.

“It is not that, Petrie, and you know that! Just… just let it go. You do not have any idea about what happened to me.” She said, not willing to drag the conversation on any longer. However, those hopes were crushed the moment Orchid’s voice reached her ears.

“Thank goodness you survived, Ruby! Just… just never scare me like that again!” He yelled in never-ending happiness as he jumped off from Littlefoot’s back and ran towards his sister before embracing her warmly. It took a moment before the girl returned that gesture and even when she did, it was weak and half-hearted. Ruby’s voice was likewise silent as she  whispered to her brother.

“I just wanted to make sure you’d live through this, Orchid. Now that Arial is gone, that’s the only thing I could do. I’m happy to be here but… poor Arial…” She said while looking right at the boy’s eyes. Orchid’s joy quickly turned into sorrow as she realized just what Ruby meant. The scene turned silent immediately and the younger fastrunner started to sob alongside her sister as Petrie and Littlefoot looked at the sight silently. The seconds passed on slowly when the longneck asked the obvious question.

“Wh… what happened to your sister, Ruby?” He said simply, causing the female to look at his eyes keenly even if it was clear she held nothing but respect and affection towards him.

“I lost her to this forest earlier tonight and I tried to befriend anyone I could to bring her back from those monsters ruling this place. Now that they’re gone, I… I cannot save her anymore. And we even… oh, Ducky…” She said as she nuzzled her brother whose triumphant joy had turned into sadness.

Littlefoot’s heart skipped a beat as he heard those words. He hadn’t seen Ducky during the fight but she had been there in the reflection he had witnessed earlier. That and Ruby’s words… it just couldn’t be. As he saw the depth of Ruby’s distress, he asked Petrie in a silent, grave voice.

“What do you know about Ducky? Did you see her?” He asked, praying he didn’t receive the answer he feared he would. Petrie’s face immediately revealed the truth and it was immediately clear she was no longer in this world. The flyer couldn’t even look his friend in the eyes as he gave his answer.

“Ducky… Ducky gone, Littlefoot. She… she died just before you showed up! She save Ruby and Lenel… Lenel grab her and… AND THREW HER AGAINST A STONE WALL, CRUSHING HER COMPLETELY!” He yelled as he broke down completely, not even able to see Littlefoot’s reaction. The longneck sat down in shock, able to only stare at the darkness in shock. No, it couldn’t be… had he actually been that close to reuniting with the kindest dinosaur he had ever known only for her to die just moments before they got the chance! The fact that Ducky was in the reflection he had seen… the thought she had still been alive back then.
The boy sniffed deeply as he  thought about the cruelty of it all. He slowly lowered his gaze towards Petrie and asked the other male the only question he could.

“Is… is she still… still out…” He asked, making the flyer nod before the longneck could finish. The smaller dinosaur’s voice was beyond broken as he spoke to his friend.

“Me not sure if Petrie can do it but me owe it to Ducky to bid her farewell. Littlefoot, Ruby, you want to come with Petrie? He asked as he slowly spread his wings, looking as the faintest twinkle of light started to appear in the sky, serving as the first harbinger of the new day. However, none of the four dinosaurs noted it as they pondered about the monstrous task in front of them. Littlefoot approached the flyer, not hiding his emotions in the least.

“I wouldn’t pass any chance to see her after all this time. Lead the way, Petrie.” He said, his heart beating wickedly within his chest.

Ruby, on the other hand, looked at her friends longingly, only Littlefoot’s unexpected appearance giving her any glimmer of hope in this most sickening of situations. However, her heart told her that she had only one option here: she couldn’t allow Ducky to pass on without a proper goodbye. She nodded at her brother and inhaled deeply as he rose to her full height.

“She gave her life for me. I wouldn’t be worthy of living if I didn’t respect her sacrifice even that much.” She whispered, causing Petrie to look at her longingly. The flyer then rose into the air, his thoughts completely focused on the task at hand. In this moment, he wasn’t able to give Ortin and Glide any thought even if still cared about them deeply. However, Ducky’s loss overwhelmed his entire world right now and giving his farewell to her was something he simply had to do. He spoke to his friends as he headed back towards the fateful place he’d curse for the rest of his life.

“Petrie go first in case some of the bad flyers still out there. We no want any more losses.” He said simply, the four dinosaurs heading towards their fallen friend in complete, deafening silence.

The sight in front of him was someone he had already accepted in his mind’s eye but seeing it before him was something that made Littlefoot’s heart colder than it had been since losing his family. The sight of Ducky lying against the rock wall, her head partially buried in the ground sparkles. He could see a massive injury just over her forehead, knowing that it was the spot that had hit the wall. Pieces of fractured bone could be seen in the wound but none of those witnessing that sight wanted to look at it. The longneck slowly collapsed into the ground as he tried to catch his breath, the pain filling every part of his body.

That pain was shared by the fastrunner on his right side but to Ruby, it was mixed with guilt and bitterness at everything that had led to this moment. The omnivore started to slowly approach the swimmer and she knelt by her side, trying to smile weakly as she looked at the other female’s still-open eyes. Her voice nearly broke down as she started to speak, able to finish her words only barely.

“Wh… why did you come back, Ducky? If you had just done like I asked… you’d still be alive. But… at least you saved me so… thank you for that at least. You’ll never know just how much you meant to me in the Valley and during the past weeks.” She said as she suddenly seemed to stop still, able to only look at the passed swimmer. Her three companions stared at her solemnly, not speaking one word. After Ruby had finished speaking, Petrie started to weakly move forward to speak what he had in mind.

“Oh, Ducky. Petrie… Petrie always saw you as me best friend of all in the Valley. Me always feel like… like you were there for me when I needed you most and me even felt… felt something me never felt with anyone else! That… one day we could have been even more than friends…” He said while allowing tears flow down his cheeks. All of that was true: Ducky had understood him more than any of his other friends and she had always treated him like no other dinosaur had. His thoughts were suddenly interrupted by Ruby who asked him oddly.

“What do you mean by that, Petrie?” She asked cryptically, making the flyer gulp slightly. Of course he knew such feelings would lead nowhere and even if some first seeds of love had been planted in his heart, he knew very well Ducky could never have been his mate. He exhaled slightly as he prepared to answer, not willing to start opening up about those kinds of feelings right now.

“Forget about what Petrie said. It just a stupid thought anyways.” He said as he looked at the swimmer, not really able to say anything more.

Littlefoot looked at the duo sadly but the longneck knew that he had to say something as well and he’d do so gladly. His earlier loss of hope had been overwhelmed by this loss and for the first time in ages, he felt like Littlefoot again and not some useless pile of rocks lying in the forest. He slowly moved towards the duo and then started speaking slowly.

“You truly were one of a kind. No one else was able to make me feel the same way you did. I’m just sorry… that I wasn’t there in time to save you. You already saved me once so… I’m so sorry.” He said, thinking about the day when Ducky’s companionship had woken him up from his apathy following his mother’s death. Without her appearance, the boy knew he would have almost certainly starved, a thought which made his heart ache even more.

Ruby sighed deeply as she suddenly looked behind herself, seeing the forms of two dinosaurs which filled her heart with bitterness and hate. Lenel and Sireia were still lying only a short distance from her and while she was glad that they would never again be a threat, merely their presence made her tremble with rage. She wanted nothing more than to punish herself for ever serving either of those monsters but what was done was done. She didn’t want to cheapen Ducky’s passing by dwelling in her own self-pity. Her voice was hoarse and sickened as she spoke to her friends before doing something that surprised them greatly.

“She doesn’t deserve to lie here next to those two. I’ll take her somewhere where Ducky doesn’t have to rest with her killers.” She said as she picked the swimmer’s already-cold body from the ground, cringing as she saw the full extent of her injuries. Along with her head, most of the bones on her left side had also been crushed and Ruby nearly dropped her friend as she saw it all. However, she soon gathered herself as she followed the stone wall until it suddenly curved right and after walking a bit further, making sure that the two flyers were no longer anywhere to be seen, she laid Ducky back to the ground, leaving her in a sitting position against the wall. Ruby’s voice trembled as she spoke, hardly able to comprehend even now what had happened.

“That’s a better spot for her. Here, Lenel and Sireia won’t be able to haunt her anymore.” She said while earning approving nods from her companions. The wind seemed to slowly grow stronger as the fastrunner turned away from the swimmer while wiping her tears way with her hand. She exhaled deeply as she slowly joined her friends. The three other dinosaurs looked at her sadly as Littlefoot spoke with a teary voice.

“I guess this is as good spot as any. I… I just wish… it wasn’t like this. Goodbye, Ducky. I… we will never forget you.” He said, turning away from his friends as he sniffed heavily. The longneck’s heart was a storm of loss but he also couldn’t quite overlook the joy of reunion with two of his other friends.

Petrie looked at the longneck, frowning slightly as he looked at his extremely thin and scarred form, suddenly realizing he knew very little about what had happened to the other boy. His current condition was a far cry from the broken, even insane, Littlefoot he had met earlier on this night. Of course he was happy to see him feeling better but everything he had told before still haunted the flyer. He hated to ask Littlefoot the things he had in mind but he knew that the longneck owed him some answers. However, his voice was meek and low in order to minimize the emotional impact the larger dinosaur was going to experience because of his question.

“Littlefoot… Petrie hate to ask you but what happened to you? Me heard you found the Valley again and me tried to look for you and me finally did. But what happened after you left the Valley? You said that… you lost your whole family but… how?” He asked, causing Ruby and Orchid’s eyes to widen immediately as this was complete news to them. However, Littlefoot’s weary gaze confirmed that Petrie’s words were true. The longneck turned to look at the flyer and asked him glumly.

“Are you sure you want to know? I certainly don’t want to think about that but… I guess I owe it to them to tell you the truth.” He said as he looked at the sky again, looking as the darkness of the night was starting to get replaced by the light hue of a Cold Time’s morning. Petrie could see the distress within the other male’s eyes but he could see that deep down, he was ready to tell his story. The smaller boy’s voice was beyond concerned as he spoke again.

“Please do, Littlefoot. Your grandparents, daddy and Shorty were our friends as well.” He said, meaning every word he said. Every one of them had been nothing but friendly to them and even Shorty with his hubris and arrogance was a good dinosaur at heart. Littlefoot sighed deeply before glancing at ducky one more time, feeling the aching in his heart slowly spread to each part of his body. He knew that he didn’t have the strength to go through it all but he could at least tell what had been the cause of their ends.

“Okay, Petrie. Yes, I indeed found the Valley again but I simply couldn’t stay there for long without you or my grandparents. They had left to look for me but of course neither of them knew just where we had gone. It was all some sick joke… it was because they didn’t wait for me in the Valley…” He said while shaking his head. He was clearly disgusted by his own story and his three listeners could see just how distressed the longneck really was. Littlefoot took a deep breath before he continued, wondering just for how long he could take this.

“Anyway, they had headed at the same direction we had headed for, right to that cursed desert… and BECAUSE THEY NEVER FOUND ME, THEY CONTINUED LOOKING FOR DAYS! WHY COULDN’T THEY JUST TURN BACK EARLIER? WE COULD… WE COULD BE TOGETHER IF THEY HAD DONE THAT!” He yelled, new tears flowing into the ground as he tried to calm down. However, it didn’t take long until his anger turned into sadness, his voice falling tremendously.

“It was I who finally found them and they were… they were slowly starving from the searching. They had become lost in that desert after they had refused to give up the search. I was just there… just there in time to see them pass away. They hardly even recognized me anymore and they could no longer even speak. Poor grandma and grandpa.” He said with wide eyes, staring right at the ground. He had tried to ignore that memory to his best ability but now, that moment came back at him like the highest wave of the Big Water. It suddenly seemed to sweep away all of his courage and the longneck started to sob deeply as he thought about it all, causing Ruby and Petrie to glance at each other quickly.

Especially Petrie was stunned by those news as he had known Littlefoot’s grandparents nearly for his whole life. He knew just what they had meant to the longneck and they certainly hadn’t deserved such a ghastly end. His own heart grew heavy as well even if he had already heard about their passing before. He moved closer to his old friend, looking at the longneck understandingly.

“They must have been happy to know you alive, Littlefoot. That all they would ask for.” He merely said, knowing there was nothing else he could do to help his friend. Littlefoot looked at the flyer with half-closed eyes, steeling himself for whatever came next. His voice was still low and pained but it was steadier than before, clearly as a sign that whatever was coming meant a lot to him.

“I truly hope so, Petrie. I wandered those wastes for many days and I nearly joined them in the Great Beyond and I had already accepted that fate. However, I was found by some scout that belonged to my dad’s herd and… and I joined him and Shorty. Without grandma and grandpa and you guys, I had nothing keeping me in the Valley. For a short time, I thought that I could really be happy in my dad’s herd despite everything that had happened. He was overjoyed to have me back and even Shorty seemed nicer than ever before. I also got new friends there and I felt like I belonged there. That I was supposed to follow dad on that path.” He said while looking at the sky, looking at the new light twinkling by his mother’s side. That sight made him feel slightly easier even if he’d never recover from what followed in his story.

Ruby looked at the longneck glumly, knowing that whatever came next had to be beyond monstrous. It seemed that Petrie had heard something she hadn’t and the flyer’s silence convinced her to listen to whatever Littlefoot had to say. No words would do any good right now anyway. She sat into the ground in silence as the male continued his story.

“However, that wasn’t meant to be. After three weeks of travelling with them, first of the herd became sick. At first she was merely more tired and sadder than usual but in a day or two, she started to cough violently and before long, those coughs… were filled with her blood. She grew weak and shuddered as the hours went on and it didn’t take long until she finally collapsed into the ground, too weak to take another step. Dad tried to get her up but there was nothing he could.

It was around that point that more members of the herd started to cough ever more violently, more and more of them dying right in front of our eyes. Some of the others wanted us to spread out and regroup at the same spot after a week in order to see who was still healthy… but dad had none of it. He wanted us to stay together so that we could defend each other but that was the worst thing he could have done back then.

More and more of them became sick and… it wasn’t long until dad got that same disease as well. He tried to fight it for as long as he could but in the end, it was all for nothing. He told me and Shorty to get away from the others while we still could and we were forced to leave while he was still alive. Shorty didn’t want to leave him even then but we weren’t given a choice. For a moment, we thought we’d at least have each other but… neither did that last.” The longneck took a deep breath as he thought about it for a moment. Slowly, both Petrie and Ruby rose to their full heights and moved to sit on Littlefoot’s sides in a clear show of support. Both of them had more than glum expressions on their faces but neither of them wanted to interrupt their friend.

“After a day, we reached a narrow pass that we had to go through. I didn’t know that anything was wrong back then but as we reached its midpoint, Shorty suddenly turned around and ran away from me. I tried to follow him but he warned me not to do so. Only at that point did I learn that he had the first signs of that terrible sickness. I tried to tell him I’d stay by his side no matter what but… he suddenly charged at the mountainside, causing the rocks to block the path between us. He wanted to make sure I’d never get that cursed sickness and… it’s because of him that I’m still alive today.” He said, tears continuing to fall from his eyes. Both of his friends looked at him in compassion, only now understanding the depth of Littlefoot’s pain. Ruby looked at him for a long time before trying to cheer him up to her best ability.

“But… if you never saw him again, there is a chance Shorty is still alive, isn’t there?” She asked but to her shock, the boy merely shook his head. The faraway gaze within his only grew deeper as he gave his answer.

“No. I spent the next days trying to find a way back to the other side and I finally did. And Shorty… he was still there. He had tried to get somewhere but he had barely even left the pass. He is gone, Ruby.” He said, causing the fastrunner to take a somewhat ashamed expression as she hadn’t wanted to give the male any false hopes. Petrie cringed at those words, only barely able to comprehend just how his friend had to have felt. He decided to move on, knowing that he had no way of making the longneck feel any better.

“What happen then? How you find your way here, Littlefoot?” He said, making Littlefoot turn to slowly look at him. He had a weary expression and it seemed like his pain had slowly started to turn into simple longing. His voice was softer as he gave his answer.

“I once again had no place to go and just as before, I was almost on the verge of giving up. I was starving and everyone I knew was dead. Those were truly terrible days… but then something happened that you may not believe. Suddenly, the sky became filled with bright, brilliant…” He started before the light of early morning suddenly turned into blinding radiance, similar to the one Ruby had witnessed back in the Desolate Rise. Littlefoot gasped as he looked at those lights, able to speak only a few words.

“They looked exactly like that, Ruby and Petrie! But why…” He started but almost immediately, the flyer whispered in clear astonishment. He shook his head in disbelief, the previous burst of light ending the fight paling in comparison to this.

“It… it coming from the pond where the fight started. Me… Petrie believe those lights call us there.” He said, his heart starting to beat faster and faster as he thought about what was going to happen. However, Ruby’s reaction was the strongest one of the three and her hands turned into fists as she turned towards the direction the light. She gritted her teeth together as she spoke to her friends, more than eager to get to action.

“That’ll be their last mistake! They will give Arial back to me before this day is over or I am not a fastrunner! Those… those cursed bastards…” She said before her determination eased for a moment more. She slowly turned around to look at Ducky, knowing that this would be the last time she’d ever see the swimmer’s face. With a heavy heart, she approached the swimmer before whispering into her unhearing ears sadly.

“Thank you again, Ducky. Rest well, my friend, and thank you for what you did for me.” She said before rising up again, seeing her friends look at the swimmer, clearly more than agreeing with the fastrunner’s message. The omnivore then spoke to her companions before speaking to them sternly.

“Let’s go and show those monsters that they messed with the wrong fastrunner.” She said, causing the others to look at each other in clear worry. None of them wanted to get on the spirits’ bad side but it was true that they simply couldn’t leave Arial out there… wherever she was. Petrie spoke to the longneck silently, knowing that there was only one way forward.

“Let’s do as she say, Littlefoot. Me just hope she know what she doing.” He said as he took to the skies, causing the other male take a deep breath as he headed after his friends.

“Are you sure this is a good idea, Ortin? We know those ghosts wanted to help Lenel and they haven’t done one good thing for us this entire time! Shouldn’t we stay away from them?” Glide asked as she forced her way forward, every step she took causing a wave of agony to flow through her wounded body. Ortin looked at her in concern but his voice was rather determined as he gave his answer.

“You’re right but there’s not much else we can do. We have no place to return to and besides, every dinosaur nearby saw those lights! If Petrie is still alive, he’ll be there as well.” He answered, knowing his words to be correct. However, he couldn’t help but feel that the if in his question was more than formidable as he didn’t have any proof that the other boy still hadn’t journeyed into the Great Beyond. However, his optimism was further hit by the girl’s next words.

“What do you think happened to Haste and Lenel? We’ve seen neither of them since the fight ended so they must be dead but… how? Do you think the first flash had something to do with it?” She asked, hating to be a burden to her friend. All her life she had wanted to prove that she needed no help but she knew she would have been dead by now without the male. But she was alive and she knew that was something to be grateful about. Ortin’s voice was almost tense as he answered.

“I think so. After all, that happened right before everything went quiet. But how about you, Glide? Are you feeling any better?” He asked, seeing that the female’s bleeding was slowing by the second but he could see the weakness and pain within her face. The girl groaned as she gave her answer, hating her condition beyond any words.

“I will live, Ortin, and that’s all that matters right now. I just feel so d…” She started but before she got further, she heard a cheerful cry from the skies above her.
“Ortin, Glide! It really you! You still alive, thank the Bright Circle! He yelled as he headed towards the duo, his mood easing somewhat as he saw that his two friends were still alive. He landed right in front of the duo and wasted no time embracing them heartily. Ortin cringed slightly at that gesture, slightly unsure on how to respond. His voice was awkward as he gave his answer.

“Yes, we are, Petrie but… what happened to you? And aren’t you mad to me?” The bluish flyer asked, the other boy’s rush of happiness slowly starting to evaporate again as the reality pressed into his mind but his voice was still warm as he answered.

“Of course me not mad at you, Ortin. You didn’t do the right thing but neither has Petrie always. As for what happen to me, it a long story but me can tell you that Lenel and Sireia dead.” He said, his face growing more agitated as he spoke their names. Glide let out a sigh of relief as he heard those words, able to draw the conclusions about that piece of news herself.

“In that case, it was likely Haste who died when the first light flashed! Great job, Petrie!” She said cheerfully before they heard a feminine voice calling at them.

“Who are you talking to, Petrie? Are they… are they…” She started before remembering the two flyers that she had seen by Petrie’s side at the start of the battle. She had no idea about just what kind of flyers they were but she did know that they hadn’t started their acquittances in the best possible terms. Her voice was tense but she tried to sound as kind as she simply could despite her grief, they were Petrie’s friends after all.

“Umm… hi, both of you. My name is Ruby. I’m afraid I didn’t give a good impression the last time I met but I assure you, I turned on Lenel before his end. I mean no ill to either of you.” She said, hoping that there wasn’t any more drama coming her way. She was already sick of it. Glide and Ortin nodded at each quickly, both of them knowing just what each other was thinking about. Glide approached the fastrunner slowly, cocking her head as she gave her answer.

“I believe as much but I’ve never been able to trust your kind and the thing is, the fact you ever fought for Lenel tells a whole lost about your judgement. I’m not going to drive you away for Petrie’s sake but know that we will keep an eye on you and if you try anything funny, then maybe Petrie will finally realize you cannot be trusted. But for now, I have nothing more to say.” She spoke dryly, earning an annoyed grin from Ruby and the omnivore’s voice was a bitter, even menacing one as she gave her brief answer.

“How gracious of you.” She merely said before turning her gaze away from the two flyers, her disdain apparent in her gestures. Petrie looked at the two in clear annoyance as he didn’t want his friends to distrust each other but Glide and Ortin’s reaction wasn’t a huge surprise to him. The boy merely crossed his arms and looked at the sky, deciding it was best to simply let this matter lie for now. He looked as Littlefoot and Orchid greeted their new companions but neither of them seemed to be particularly excited by that meeting after what the two had said to Ruby. He simply decided to get over this awkward meeting as he asked his companions the question burdening his mind.

“Now that we past that, there only a short way towards the pond anymore but me not see anything!” He merely said, causing Ruby to move to his side, seeing the waters glimmering in the distance. The early morning was completely silent and the pond seemed to glimmer ever more brightly in the new light. However, that sight only made her
resolve burn brighter than before and the fastrunner suddenly cried at the air, more than determined to finally end this charade.

“You damn ghosts, spirits or whatever you bastards are, gather enough guts to face me! Know that I will not leave this place without her so if you won’t return her to me, then you’ll have to kill me you cursed monsters!” She yelled, her outburst surprising her companions save for Orchid. Only he knew the depth of Ruby’s love for her siblings and he was more than glad to see that she still had the determination she had always had. To no one’s surprise, the lights started to slowly gather around the small group, circling them in their center. Ruby’s face only grew darker as she looked at them, only the sight of them making her blood boil. She could hardly contain herself as she heard the voices appear in her head.

“You truly are brave to come making demands here, fastrunner. Not many dinosaurs would dare to do that.” They said and to the omnivore’s astonishment, she noticed that her friends had heard those words too. When Lenel had spoken with them, the others had heard absolutely nothing so apparently the ghosts wanted to let everyone know just what they were talking about. Even then, that mattered nothing to her and Ruby took another step forward as she gave her response.

“That is because I have nothing more to lose! Without her, I have only my brother and he deserves someone else in his life than the sister who has caused only grief and pain to him! Why did you even take her from me? Just… why? ANSWER ME, NOW!” She cried, hardly noticing Orchid walking to her side with a somber look on his face. It was clear he wanted Arial’s return more than anything else and he wanted to be on Ruby’s side as she tried to make that happen. It wasn’t long until the duo heard the spirits’ next answer.

“You should have been able to realize it by now, Ruby. The answer has lied before you this entire night.” They said, causing Ruby’s breaths to quicken as she grew more and more outraged. However, before she was able to answer, Orchid stepped forward and spoke to the spirits with his hands crossed.

“Please, just forget those riddles and tests for a while. I do not know if you know just what we’ve been through but none of us wants anything bad for you or even the powers you offer. I know both I and Ruby just want Arial back. I’m not sure just how you wanted to test Ruby but I ask you, just forget it and allow us to leave. Together.” He said in a low, genuine voice, his tone surprising even Ruby. She hadn’t expected his brother to keep his calm here and voice the siblings’ prayers that precisely. She was suddenly ashamed of her own brashness but those fears started to dissipate when the ghosts’ spoke next.

“What about you, Ruby? Do you agree with what the boy said?” They said, almost prompting the omnivore’s heart to skip a beat. What were the ghosts proposing now? Was this just another game? She could recognize some kind of shift in their tone but she wasn’t sure what to think about it all. For now, the girl decided to speak merely the truth even if
she hated the thought of slithering in front of those who had harmed her and her family in such profound ways.

“I do. I’ve wanted nothing else this entire night. Please, Arial’s safety is the only thing I wish for now. Return her to us and we’ll be away from here before the evening.” She said, struggling to keep her voice calm and soft but she managed to finish her words without betraying her underlying feelings. At first, nothing seemed to happen but after a moment, the ghosts started to move further away from the two siblings and to the duo’s extreme astonishment, a tiny whirlwind of light started to form in front of them.

At first it seemed like another one of the ghosts but soon enough, they were able to see hues of purple and pink within that whirlwind, followed by flashes of plumage, of hands and of a distinct head… It wasn’t long before the whirlwind disappeared and Ruby nearly froze in place as she saw her sister in front of her, clearly sleepy and confused but alive and healthy. She yelped deeply as the flurry of emotion washed over her and before she knew it, she had closed her sister into her embrace again, speaking to her in utter happiness.

“Thank the ancestors you’re alive, Arial! I was already fearing the worst!” She cried as  the other girl tried to breath between Ruby and Orchid’s shows of affection. She could only barely form the next words even if she was more than happy to be there as well.

“Wh… what happened? Where am I?” She asked, the entire scene being one of total mystery to her. Orchid looked at the female in surprise, giving his answer immediately.

“Don’t you remember? You ran away from us and the spirits took you away from us! It’s been at least two hours since we last saw you!” He yelled, allowing tears of joy to flow into the ground at this unexpected turn of events. Arial looked at him with wide eyes, her voice more than weak and fearful  as she gave her answer.

“No, I don’t. The last thing I remember is walking with you in the forest… after which everything went dark.” She said while shuddering from shock, those news clearly overwhelming her mind. Ruby noticed that as well and she pat her sister’s back warmly as she tried to calm her down, at least part of her immense guilt and horror slowly wearing off.

“Well, now you’re back with us and that is all that matters now. You’re safe.” She said, knowing those words to be true. Arial’s breaths slowly grew easier as she realized she had nothing to fear anymore but her older sibling wasn’t quite content with the situation just yet. She turned to look at the spirits again and spoke in an unsure, wavering voice.

“You have our thanks but… why? Why did you take her away in the first place? And why did you cause me those damn visions?” She asked, dreading what kind of answers she would receive. Petrie decided to stay silent for now even if the former was more than sickened by the beings’ presence after they had rejected him earlier. He would bring that up sooner or later but he’d allow Ruby to get the answers she was looking for. It wasn’t long until the answer came.

“It was all to ensure that you’d be here during this fight. Those visions tested you mental strength while we knew that holding your sister here for a bit longer would ensure that you’re not going to leave too soon.” They said but those words only made Ruby more agitated than before. Yes, she now had her sister but these ghosts’ actions sickened her without an end.

“Test me? In case you didn’t notice, I never asked to be tested because I never, ever, wanted the power Lenel and Haste were after! And even if I was, only a monster would use my sister to manipulate me!” She screamed, just thinking of all the sadness and sorrow she had experienced simply because of the spirits deciding to force her to join the fight. Her teeth hurt has she gritted them together while listening to the next answer.

“At least you answered our call. Only those who have nothing more to lose and are seeking some kind of hope saw the colors we sent. We did that because we could see where Haste and Lenel’s rivalry as well as Stealth’s hubris would lead and we wanted some others here to prove their own worth in the midst of all that bloodshed.” The voices told but it was at this point that Petrie decided to finally join the conversation. His voice was equally sickened as he asked the question bothering him greatly.

“If you had simply allowed Ruby and the others stay away, then Ducky would still be alive! It your stupid games that killed her, nothing else!” He cried, bitterness more than apparent in his cry. Ruby and Littlefoot nodded at that question decisively, knowing his accusation to be true. The spirits seemed to spread out farther away from the five friends before speaking again.

“Yes, she would still be alive but neither would you have been able to stop Lenel nor Stealth without Ruby and Ducky being here. We never knew just how they would act but their presence did end up making a clear difference and despite the swimmer’s death, we still stand by our decision. It may not seem fair to you but we simply cannot fight all of the battles of the living for them because it is the living who will make a difference even outside this forest. That is not why we’re here but we did kill Haste as she would have been a disaster to us all.” They said, making Petrie to let out an enraged cry as he attempted to dash towards one of the nearest lights, more than willing to avenge Ducky’s passing.

However, just before he hit the ethereal sphere, the flyer felt himself freeze within a blink of an eye, unable to move a finger. Yet, his mind was still as sharp as ever and his panic rose as he heard Littlefoot yell to the spirits.

“Let him go! I think you are just a bunch of bullies who…” He started but before he could finish, his voice was eclipse by a rumbling response that made all of the five young dinosaurs’ heads hurt.

“Now, we have to make a few things clear to you. No, we did not want to hurt any of you but neither did we strive to keep you safe. We did not call you here because we wanted you but because you yourselves answered the call even if you didn’t know it. Yes, you might have suffered because of it but in case you didn’t notice, there are bigger things going on here than you! So stop acting like spoiled brats and realize that you are not in charge here! Now, calm down or get away from here but you surely don’t want to do that.” The voices said as Petrie suddenly regained his ability to move. Littlefoot looked at the ghosts bitterly and while he tried to keep his tone somewhat restrained, it still held his deep bitterness.

“And what now? You said you got us here to prove our worth so are you now going to give us the great power you promised the others? Especially after you said that I had failed?” He asked, seriously not knowing what kind of an answer to expect. Even if he despised everything about the spirits, he still wanted to hear as much as possible about this game he and his friends had been drawn into. It wasn’t long until he received his answer.

“To be honest, Littlefoot, we failed you because the other players hadn’t arrived yet and your anger and hate only made rejecting you easier. As for your other question, no, we would never give these powers to children as it would leave only to another strategy like the one that tied us to this place. But we agree that all your performances were formidable on this day and if you continue on your paths, you might one day be worthy of this prize, if you so wish.” The voices told, making Ruby glance at her friends in clear annoyance, not hiding her frustration at this discussion.

“You make it sound like a competition where only one of us will be able to win. Are you seriously trying to make us turn against each other, especially after we all saw just where it lead Haste and Lenel?” She asked, not able to trust her own ears. She was beyond outraged by what she was hearing but the answer she received made her calm down somewhat.

“No. We can choose the most suitable dinosaur to continue Olres’ work without fighting as well but the flyers were already determined to resort to violence. And it is very clear each one of you would accept any of your friends’ victory before standing against them so don’t worry about that. But keep our offer in mind and remember that as long as your hearts are true, you have nothing to fear.” They said, causing the three friends to glance at each other in clear confusion, not really knowing what to think about all of this. It was clear that none of the three trusted the ghosts but even then, that promise was more than luring to any dinosaur… Petrie gulped before speaking, slightly unsettled by this conversation.

“Me… me think we should do. At least you brought us all together so that good at least…” He said, not really able to determine what to think about all of this. Yes, Ducky had died because all of this but it was true that her passing wasn’t really the ghosts’ fault. He still  despised the game they had played and he certainly wouldn’t never, ever follow within Lenel and Haste’s footsteps. The flyer glanced at his friends briefly as they prepared to follow him but before they could do that, they heard the spirits speaking to them again in a more enigmatic tone.

“We indeed brought you together even if it was a mistake. However, I think we can do even more than that after everything you all have gone through…” They said, causing the flyer to frown deeply as he turned to look at the sphere of lights again, something within those words making him unnerved. He crossed his arms as he looked at them, willing to know what it was that they were talking about.

“What you mean by that? What more can you do to us? And if you try any more games, me will get away immediately!” He cried, seeing that Ruby and Littlefoot agreed with him. The ghosts slowly seemed to disperse over a larger area, clearly preparing to do something very unusual. The voices spoke to the children again and this time, each of them could only listen in utter and complete shock.

“As a sign of our goodwill towards all of you, we will allow you this one meeting with those you all miss dearly. But remember, this opportunity will not come ever again…” They said as the area around the pond started to glimmer. The three friends as well as Orchid and Arial looked at the scene in thrall, not able to believe what they were seeing. New spheres of brightness appeared before them, slowly starting to lose their shine and to their complete shock, they started to slowly take shapes and forms… and familiar ones as well.

Ruby’s heart nearly failed her as she saw the features of her dearest friend appear in front of her, never expecting to see him again. The young sharptooth was transparent but other than that, he was just as she had remembered him. On his sides appeared the rest of their lost friends as well: Cera, Ducky and Spike were there alongside the benevolent carnivore. He was the first one to speak and his voice sounded just like it had before.

“Umm… hi, everyone. Nice to see all of you again!” He said, knowing just how it awkward this meeting had to be to his friends.. However, those words seemed to break the astonishment within Ruby, Petrie and Littlefoot and the fastrunner didn’t waste any time running towards her friend and the one whose death had set all of this into motion. Her voice was beyond overjoyed as she spoke to the ghastly sharptooth.

“F… forgive me for failing to be there when you needed it, Chomper! I… I’m so very sorry for what happened back then… I failed everyone when I let you go alone…” She pleaded but to her shock, she realized she couldn’t touch the other dinosaur. She could see the somewhat longing but still glad look on Chomper’s face as he gave his answer.

“We already spoke before, don’t you remember, Ruby? I cannot thank you enough for doing as I asked you to and going on despite everything that happened to you. But there’s no reason to think about that now that we’re together, right?” He asked, earning a teary but warm nod from the female. She quickly looked what her other friends were doing, noticing happily that they were also preparing to utilize this beautiful moment to their best ability.

“Umm… Ducky? Me sorry me never had the time to tell you everything Petrie wanted to… but you see, me s…” The flyer started but to both his joy and sorrow, he heard the a silent giggle from Ducky as the swimmer heard those words. There was a sad tone to her words as well even if she was more accepting about the current circumstances. She knew very well how sickening it was that only a while ago, she would be alongside her three surviving friends but there was no reason to dwell within all of that anymore. What was done was done  and she simply had to accept it.

“You don’t have to worry about that, Petrie. There was a lot I would have said as well but now we have the chance to make up for that, we do. I was just so glad to see you as I had missed you almost as much as Spike, yep, yep, yep.” She said as she hugged her brother, making Petrie shed a tear after another as he saw that familiar but yet so distressing sight before him. There was no doubt that this really was Ducky but he knew very well that they’d be together only for a short while. The flyers took a deep sigh as he prepared to say the words he had wanted to say for a long time.

“Ducky… me not know if you feel the same but… if you still were with me for good, me think… me think me would have seen you as more than a friend. I know it weird but…” He started but the swimmer waved him to stop there. She took a sad but understanding look as she answered to the male.

“I think I felt the same way but… even if I could go with you, it would never have worked and we both know it, Petrie. But do not think about it anymore. I am sure you will find happiness with someone else in the future, I do.” She said, giving her sweetest smile to the other dinosaur. Petrie gulped at those words but he simply couldn’t do as told. The boy’s eyes grew moist as he tried to give his answer.

“But it just so hard. Only after our fight in the Valley and after losing you did I realize just how much me like you, Ducky! Petrie would give anything if… if this night never happened.” He said while the swimmer looked at him in compassion. She would have wanted nothing more than to give her friend a deep hug but that simply wasn’t possible. Instead, she looked him in the eyes and spoke to him sweetly.

“I know and so would I but… I am happy I was at least able to save Ruby and we did succeed, did we not? Things could be worse, yep, yep, yep.” She said while glancing at Ruby, happy that she seemed much more like her old self. There seemed to be a chance for a happy ending for many of her friends and she could only regret that she couldn’t be with them but if there was one thing the swimmer was good at, it was sharing others’ happiness. And that was the one thing that mattered to her right now.

“Well, you seem miserable, Littlefoot. That certainly doesn’t look like your old self.” Cera said while looking at the wounded boy before herself. Even if the longneck hadn’t expected to hear that voice ever again, something within it made her heart beat faster and instinctually, she knew the exact answer to that mock sneer.

“Of course I don’t as you haven’t been there to force me to do my best to save myself from your ideas. Is it any wonder that I’m not the same longneck without you?” He asked with a slight smile even if this conversation shocked him greatly. The threehorn tried to act as if she was offended by those words but that changed after she let out a sigh before speaking to him sadly.

“Yeah, you are not wrong. I wasn’t always the best friend to you or the others but… but I always tried my best.” She said, thinking about all the times when she had been wrong and Littlefoot right. The longneck shook his head before approaching the threehorn, trying to keep his together in an effort to keep his thoughts together to avoid saying anything he didn’t mean.

“I know you did, Cera, and that was something I always respected. In many ways, were as different as possible but even then, I saw you as my dearest friend. Even the memories about our first journey… even those slowly became happy ones as I looked at what you became. Cera, I would have loved to have you by myself even in the future. Despite your mistakes, you always wanted to do only the right thing and that is rare.” He said while narrowing his eyes while looking at the still-dark skies. The threehorn looked more than surprised at that praise and she asked carefully the one question that bothered her.

“I’m just worried about daddy and Tria. They deserved better than losing me… as did Tricia. I miss them greatly, Littlefoot… as well as you.” She said, causing the male to nod deeply, finding nothing more to add to the threehorn’s words. She could see how badly Cera was suffering inside and he hated the fact he was unable to help her. He tried to keep her a reassuring smile as he answered to the threehorn.

“At least we will never forget everything you four thought us, Cera. Nothing will ever again be the same without you. But let us not make this meeting so glum. Let’s make it one to remember.” He said as he turned at the rest of his friends, trying to look as encouraging and calming as he simply could. His voice ended the chattering among the, each of them more than happy to listen to the one who had always led them during their many adventures.

“It’s hard to believe we’re all here now and I think it’s a good proof about our friendship, everyone! Cera, Ducky, Spike and Chomper, thank you for being there for us today. I’m just so happy to meet all of you again.” He said, causing the four dinosaurs to approach him, each of them smiling at him with genuine joy. It was Chomper who spoke to the longneck, his voice carrying nothing but reverence and happiness at the first dinosaur he had seen in his life.

“I think we all are. You know, somehow it felt like we were always going to be together the moment we arrived in the Valley and I feel the same way again. We may not be able to stay here for much longer but I hope you all remember that even we are not completely gone. I’m sure you understand already, Littlefoot and I hope the rest of you will in time.”
He said, causing an ominous atmosphere fall upon the seven friends, each of them thinking about what to say to the sharptooth’s words. Petrie approached him carefully, his voice wavering as he gave his answer.

“You… you have to go already? But… you barely just return to us…” He asked, causing Chomper to nod glumly at the flyer. The predator’s voice was heavy as he spoke to the flyer.

“I think so. Even this place can’t sustain us for much longer.” He said, causing the three remaining friends’ faces to fall immediately. Ruby gulped at those news and walked closer to the images of her four passed friends, looking at them glumly.

“I… if that is so, thank you so much for making this meeting possible. I had always taught that ancestors would watch over us in our darkest moment and… you proved me right. I am glad I was able to spend all that time with you. And Chomper, thanks for forgiving me as well.” She whispered, thinking about her previous conversation with the boy. The carnivore gave her a brief smile before explaining himself to the others.

“I understand why you did that, Ruby. I would never have forgiven them if they had hurt you. I… I just have one request to all of you, one that I know Cera, Ducky and Spike have as well.” He said cryptically, making Littlefoot gulp deeply. He took a step towards the sharptooth, speaking in a forced voice.

“Anything, Chomper. Just tell us.” He said, his heart beating wickedly in his chest. To his slight surprise, it was Ducky who gave the answer, her face darkening as she presented the plea.

“Just try to move forward from this. I know how difficult it was for me without Spiky, I do. but this adventure is over. You still have a chance to make a difference in your world and we do not want to see you waste that chance, oh no, no, no.” She said, causing her three living friends to nod sadly. Petrie walked towards her and eyed all of his surviving closely. His voice was heavy but hopeful as he gave his answer.

“Petrie think we all agree that much. but me want you to also promise that you will always be there with us, even if we cannot see you. That we seven… that we seven will always be together, no matter what.” He said while his heart ached. He didn’t want to say those words but after he had managed to finish his question, breathing became again easier for him and the flyer could feel his heart also slowing down a little. The boy looked with a smile as Cera approached him and winked at him keenly.

“You bet, Petrie. I swear that we will not leave you for a moment and I hope you will feel it somewhere inside you in the Cold Times to come. But our bonds will carry on forever, we promise you that much. It was good to see all of you again this one time. But now it is the time for a goodbye.” She said as her, Ducky, Spike and Chomper’s forms started to slowly disappear into the air. Ruby ran towards them and yelled one last time with a pleading voice.

“Be well, Chomper and the rest of you! Thanks for being here one more time! Goodbye, my friends, my friends, goodbye.” She finished more silently as the four dinosaurs disappeared completely, leaving the three survivors and their four companions again alone in the pale light of the morning. Littlefoot sniffed slightly as he turned around, knowing that from now on, his four friends would only be voices in his heart like his mother and father, a thought that made fresh tears flow down his cheeks. The boy turned at the approaching ghosts and asked them with a forced voice.

“W… was it true? Was it true we will not see them again?” He asked, hoping that there might be some way these meetings could happen again but it wasn’t long before those hopes were largely ruined.

“Yes it was. We shouldn’t have given you even this one chance and calling for souls from the Great  Beyond is something that weakens us every time. We have a connection with that world but that connection is more than fragile and if we use it too much, it will completely disappear and we all cease to be.” The voices said, causing Ruby to look at them with a long face. Her voice was silent as she asked the next question, her mind clearly dwelling in the recent meeting.

“Don’t you want that? Being forced to linger here for hundreds of Cold Times must be… a worse fate than heading into the Great Beyond.” She said, sniffing deeply as she looked at
the spot her friends had just stood. Not a muscle moved in her face as she listened to the answer.

“Initially we thought so but Olres reminded us how much good the right dinosaur can do if given the chance. We are more than happy to wait for someone to continue his work and that way, we can hopefully one day atone for our stupidity of agreeing to start that battle so long ago. It might be a long wait but we hope it will be worth it. But now, we no longer have anything more to discuss. Do not tell about this land to anyone else and remember our offer. One day, any of you might grow up to be the exact dinosaur we have been looking for. We will look forward to that day with great interest.” The voices said, prompting the three to nod at them wearily. Littlefoot looked at the ghosts one more time and asked them one more question.

“Hey, I was just wondering, can you tell something to those in the Great Beyond? I’d really like to send a small message.” He said but he immediately received an answer that almost made him ashamed.

“We will not interfere in that world’s affairs in any way. Also, you should know better than anyone, Littlefoot, that you can do that part yourself. Your parents are in your heart and you can tell them whatever you want yourself.” The spirits said before they disappeared into thin air, leaving the seven dinosaurs to look at that sight silently. Indeed, Littlefoot knew that more than well. He turned to look at his friends with a weak, joyless smile as she asked the question and hang heavily over the small group of dinosaurs.

“Well, I am more than happy I could share this journey with you and see our friends again but… what now? I mean, where are going from now on?” He asked, not willing to put any pressure on his friends as so much had happened since they last met. Ruby still didn’t have a place in the Valley so if the three wanted to stay together, they couldn’t go back home. That fact hung heavily over the small group, no one having clear answers about what to do from now on.

Petrie was the first one to show any willingness to break the silence. He knew he’d return to his family one way or another but inside, he knew he didn’t want to return to the Valley even if given the chance. This life of freedom had made his former home seem so small and restraining to him and that wasn’t what his heart wanted. Willing to hear some other thoughts before announcing his own plans, he turned to look at Ortin and Glide and asked them carefully.

“Wh… what you want to do? I think your old herd still not accept you after Haste’s survivors tell their story. And without any real family, Petrie not sure if you even want to.” He said, drawing everyone’s attention to the two flyers. Ortin was clearly taken aback by the other boy’s words and he gulped deeply as he tried to stutter some kind of an answer. Truth be told, some kind of plan had started to form in his mind…

“Umm… you… you’re right, Petrie. Kero will likely be the next leader and I’m sure he believed Lenel’s tale about my family. But… I… I’ve been thinking… did you really mean it when you said I might become a leader of my own herd one day?” He asked, causing the other male’s heart to drop slightly. Those weren’t the words he had wanted to hear right now and that sentiment was reflected in his voice.

“Petrie think me seen enough of leaders for a good while, Ortin. They bring nothing but trouble and death to others.” The flyer said, prompting an answer from Glide who was less surprised by Ortin’s answer. She spoke to Petrie in a cryptic voice, clearly more open to Petrie’s suggestion.

“I’m sorry you saw the very worst our herd had to offer, Petrie, but most leaders I’ve seen actually cared for their herds. Nimble, for example, wanted nothing more than to keep us safe and maintain the trust between the other leaders. If you still remember her, you know I speak the truth.” She said, causing Petrie to cross his arms as he thought about the passed female, not really able to argue with her. Nimble had been kind towards her and it was true she had never risked her followers for nothing. His thoughts were interrupted again as Littlefoot approached the three flyers.

“Not to speak of my dad, Petrie. Even if he made a terrible mistake, he really turned lives for the better. Ortin, if you really hope you know what being a leader really is.” He said but immediately, Petrie answered to the longneck in a more frustrated voice than he had expected.

“Littlefoot, no flyer really knows that! Ortin thinks he leader just because he related to a respected flyer who live a long time ago! As were Lenel and Haste and look where it took us!” He yelled but before he could finish, Ortin approached the brown-colored boy and put his hands on his shoulders, his voice holding nothing but respect and pleading.

“Petrie, I know you distrust our traditions and I know I’ve made many terrible mistakes but trust me, I really want to do better. I know that my family’s path is also my path but I certainly do not want to do the mistakes Peak did and I don’t want to have anything to do with Olres’ powers. I just want to help as many flyers live their lives happily and to do that, I have a long way ahead of myself. But Petrie, I know it’s much to ask… but if I succeed in starting a herd one day, would you be there to help me? You have proven to be wiser than me in many ways and I’d be honored to have you by my side.” He asked, causing the other flyer to stare at him with wide eyes.

He could see Ortin was being more than honest about what he was saying and he knew very well just how respected Littlefoot’s father had been among his own herd and even in the Valley as a whole. He wanted to believe that his friend had what it would take to be someone like that but even then, he had his doubts…

“Ortin, even if me want to say yes, how can Petrie know that you be like that even when you lead a herd? Me not want to see you become a bad flyer with me being forced to watch you do all kinds of bad things! How can Petrie know that?” He asked, looking directly at Ortin’s eyes. The bluish flyer waited for a few seconds before sighing deeply, knowing he had to make a good impression now. One way or another, this was the life he had to lead now or else he’d be forced to live a life of a shame and regret.

“Because you saw what Lenel did to my family, what he did to me! All these hits on my face were made by him and I’d never want to be like him. Petrie, I know I am reckless and headstrong and I make mistakes but never once have I actually strived for something because of selfishness! I need you to keep those things at bay and that is why I ask you to accept my request. Stand by my side when the time comes.” He said with a steady voice, almost fearful about whether or not he was ready to take this path but it was the only one open to him. He was Warekli’s last descendant and either he’d have to embrace it or be seen as a weak loser.

The other boy looked at his friend with pondering eyes, clearly unsure about what to do. On one hand, he didn’t want to lead that kind of life anymore but even then… maybe, just maybe, he’d be able to make Ortin see enough sense to be a positive influence on the world of the flyers. But even then, he wouldn’t decide any of that now as now it was time to end this tragic adventure once and for all. His face turned into a careful smile as he spoke to the other boy.

“Petrie would want to believe you, Ortin, and if you think you ready to take that path, me think me will fly it with you one day. But as you say, none of that will start before we much older and for now, me want nothing more than to return to me family and live a normal life for once.” He said, earning a slight chuckle from Ortin. He looked at the other boy warmly, clearly approving of his answer.

“I understand, Petrie. I and Glide will try to find one of other flyer herds and live with them for a while before starting to strive towards our goal. We will call on you, Petrie, when we need you.” He said, causing the other male to nod at him quickly. His tone mirrored that of Ortin’s, signaling that they were in agreement.

“Very well, Ortin. Me look forward to that day.” He said, earning a thoughtful look from one of his other friends.

This was far from the first time Ruby had thought about her future but after Petrie and Ortin’s discussion, she had to admit she and her friends wouldn’t stay together forever. She had wanted to avoid telling about her plans earlier but now that Arial was safe, it was time for her to finally start rebuilding her own life and to get over all the losses of the last season. And to do that, she’d need to be alone for a good while. The fastrunner turned at Littlefoot and spoke to him silently, her words clearly uncomfortable even to herself.

“Littlefoot, please take Orchid and Arial to the Valley for me. They need some place to safe now that daddy and mommy are gone. I… I cannot look after them anymore.” She said, causing the longneck to become clearly shocked by her request. He narrowed his eyes as he answered the female’s plea.

“Wh… why, Ruby? Do you think I’m going back to the Valley… and where would you go?” He stuttered, this entire meeting becoming a terrible mess in his eyes. He hadn’t even known about Ruby’s parents’ fate and now he was asked to look after her siblings. The two younger omnivores approached their sister in clear astonishment, Arial asking her in a pleading voice.

“You cannot do this, Ruby! W… we just found each other again! Of course we’ll stay together!” They said, causing the older fastrunner to take a deep sigh and to bring her hand to her forehead. After a moment, she knelt in front of the duo and spoke to them sweetly but seriously.

“Yes, I know you’d want that, Arial and Orchid. But no matter what anyone says, it was my fault this entire debacle ever happened and… I just cannot look after you. Who knows what kind of tragedy I’d cause next. I hope to learn to become a better sister to you both in the seasons to come but to do that, I need some time to sort things out with no one depending on me.” She said and immediately Orchid tried to say something before the older halftooth silenced him with a gesture. She then moved to look at Littlefoot and she spoke to him sadly.

“As for you, Littlefoot, I know you have a future in the Valley even now. I know you care for it and its denizens more than anything, save for us, and that you want to help the others there. I would be able to finally move on if I knew they’d be there with you.” She said, almost prompting the boy to try to prove her otherwise. However, Littlefoot’s words died down in his mouth before he could voice them.

It was true that he didn’t really have a choice from now on. His father’s herd was gone and he knew no other home than the Great Valley. He knew he’d be safe there and it was true he loved that place dearly. However, he was far from confident about Ruby’s decision but if this was her choice, she’d respect it. His tone was a tense one as he spoke to the omnivore.

“If that’s what you want, I can do that much for you, Ruby. But I will miss you a lot.” He said, prompting new protests from the two younger omnivores. They turned at Ruby and cried at her in desperate outrage.

“Please don’t do this! We will go with you and there’s nothing you c…” They started in unison but Ruby’s expression silenced those protests. Slowly, she relaxed and put her hands on her siblings’ shoulders and spoke to them reassuringly.

“I promise you this is not the last time we meet, Orchid and Arial. One day when I’ve finally learned the things I need to learn, I will come to the Valley to take you home. I’m sorry but this is the very best thing I can do for you or anyone else. I promise you that the Valley is the most beautiful place you’ve ever seen and that you’ll love your time there.” She said, causing a tear to fall from Orchid’s eye. He looked at Ruby silently before whispering his answer.

“Just don’t stay away for too long, Ruby. And that you will really return to us in time.” He sniffed, causing Ruby to nuzzle him slightly. She tried to give him a weak smile even if it was more than difficult in this somber moment. Her voice was warmer than ever as she gave her answer.

“I wouldn’t abandon you for any reason, Orchid, don’t worry about that. And besides, we don’t have to leave each other just yet. We have to get away from this place first, right?” She asked, knowing her point to be a correct one. It would take at least a few hours for the seven dinosaurs to leave this cursed land and that fact alone made the two young children a bit less distressed. Ruby, Littlefoot and Petrie nodded at each other, knowing that this journey was approaching its end but each of them were also glad they could take its last steps together, accompanied by their passed friends who they knew were with them for the rest of their lives.

And so ends the second-to-last chapter of Separate Ways. Our heroes’ fates are slowly becoming clear even to themselves and even if there remains certain uncertainties in their futures, this adventure is about to end to all of the survivors’ relief. And with the knowledge that their friends are still with them, it will be far easier for Petrie, Ruby and Littlefoot to accept that they still have roles to play in the seasons to come. With this chapter, Separate Ways has become the first LBT story to cross 600k words which is pretty incredible. I dearly hope you liked this chapter and see you again with the very last chapter of this fic which should be released in about two weeks.

DiddyKF1: I’m sorry if Ortin and Glide’s fates seemed vague in this chapter as that wasn’t my intention. Hopefully their role in this new installment will clear things out a bit as there were many things that were still left open in that previous installment. As for your words about Haste, I’m beyond happy you approved of my handling of her and thank you a lot for your kind words overall about all the intrigue in this story.

And yep, Haste certainly wasn’t worth anything except the fate she received. I wanted to show that even Lenel had some spark of true goodness and greatness inside him even if they were buried under his cruelty and obsession. Haste, on the other hand, was just a gutless backstabber without whom the world is a better place. Again, thanks a lot for the praise about the battle as it means a lot to me. Hopefully you like this chapter as well!

Anagnos: It’s great to hear you enjoyed this most important of chapters, Anagnos! You are absolutely right that this is the point where the Gang needs to take new courses in life, no matter how difficult it may be. They may not share a similar bond to their previous one but that doesn’t necessarily mean its any weaker than during their time in the Valley.

Your analysis about Lenel is very spot on as he truly wanted to make world a better place and he had all the qualities needed to do just that. His end was overall a tragic one but even more regrettably to him, Ducky’s death will forever taint his name beyond any recovery. Also, it’s true that too much ambition seldom brings good results, nefarious plotting even less. Finally, you’re right that the Gang’s journey isn’t quite over yet and I hope you’ll like these final steps of this long journey…

rhombus: You certainly characterized the themes of this chapter very well. I wanted to make the characters stand against each other here even if it was clear that none of them had bad intentions. But in situations like these, not everyone can have a happy ending and this time it was Ducky. Overall, I’m extremely happy you found the battle flowing well as it’s true the pacing was quite fast. I truly hope you find this chapter as enjoyable as the last one and I look forward to your thoughts about it as well.

With the onset of the penultimate chapter of this story, the very first step on the path of restoration has now been forced upon the still-mourning remnant of the once brave gang of young dinosaurs. The untimely death of their comrade still is a very much present sign of grief among the group that only proves to become worse as they have time to reflect on the incident after the hellish struggle is finally concluded by a rather unexpected party. The overwhelming remorse, heartache and most of all, the gut feeling that all of it could have conceivably been averted will be a permanent turmoil and burdensome to withstand.

What we see in the later sequence is a true testimony that agony has been the predominant power in their lives ever since that fateful day that they were separated from each other. In many ways, these same feelings of deep sorrow have been thrust upon the gang time and time again unceasingly, and here we see the result of those very painful and trying experiences. The outcome is one that many may have not even thought to be practical, but it certainly managed to secure that heartfelt emotion that we have been accustomed to over the entirety of the story. This was especially evident in Littlefoot’s recitation on past events before the climax took place.

Fortunately, afterwards the tone of the chapter begins to take an entirely new form, one that is filled to the brim with delight, consolation and reprieve once they are finally given the opportunity to have a one-time chance to speak with their deceased friends, a comfort provided by the spirits themselves. While the reunion between them was short-lived, they are finally presented with a chance to let go of their anterior torment when reminded that everything that has happened hasn’t been their fault and are not blamed for any of it. Still, while this development brought them some closure, it would be foolish to believe that this one event would have fixed everything. Quite the contrary, they will have a very rough future ahead of them yet and must simply trust in their judgment to always do the right thing and not forget the sacrifices made along the journey.

We will likely have a more detailed version as to what each member is going to be doing now that their lives have been changed forever, but I was quite intrigued by the possibilities we might see in the decisive chapter as not everyone is ready to begin a new chapter in their life, and this issue will have to be resolved if they ever wish to have peace in their life. To think that this entire journey started from a simple yet misunderstood incident not meant to happen is mind-blowing. It will be interesting to see how you will formally conclude this epic adventure in the closing chapter. :)

It is hard to believe that the journey is at an end, both metaphorically and literally. Both of the ambitious flyers are dead as are many of their followers, but they have left much more tragedy in the wake of their parting.  For now the broken gang which has lost so much has lost yet another member.  In the aftermath of such a battle and cataclysm it is logical to ask: what now?  Though, thankfully for Littlefoot, Petrie, and Ruby, the spirits were not without a measure of mercy.

I do like the concept of allowing the gang to see one another one last time.  Normally in stories this would run the risk of seeming too contrived or cliché, but since the concept of the spirits is already established in this story - this seemed like a logical addition that provides some closure to the heartbroken protagonists.  This at the very least allows them to be told of their forgiveness and to begin the path of recovery and finding some hope in the fact that their friends truly are in a better place.  This respite, though short, is certainly necessary for them to move on.

Though we have seen some indication of where each member is going now, I do look forward to seeing in more detail what each decides to do with their lives.  Though it seems Ruby has decided to wander in search of what she needs to learn, Orchid and Arial are to be safely placed in the valley, and that Petrie and Littlefoot each has a home to return to, it is nice to see that from the standpoint of closure at least that each of them is now at peace with what they must do.  What remains of the gang looks to be going their separate ways, but at least in loyalties they are no longer separate.

The Warm Farewell

A longing sigh escaped Volant’s beak as the sight of her home opened far below her. She was glad that she had been able to find at least some food in this most difficult of seasons so that her children didn’t need to stay hungry, at least for now. That was something that made the flyer’s thoughts grow somewhat more lighthearted but even then, one thing haunted her thoughts as it had done for many, many days.

Just how was Petrie doing right now? She had started to despise herself more and more as more time had passed from their last meeting, the female not able to justify letting her son go anymore. What kind of parent allows their child to risk their lives for some cause they knew nothing about while doing nothing in the meantime? Vol ant would have wanted to hit herself but she knew that wasn’t possible while flying.

She couldn’t help but dread the thought that someone would appear one day to carry news about Petrie’s demise, that scene appearing again and again in her sleep stories. The female’s expression darkened by the second as she thought about that, knowing she’d never forgive herself if Petrie didn’t return to her. She nearly let out a sob as she prepared to land, the rest of her children giving her at least some other things to think about apart from her terrible mistake. Her voice was low and mournful as she made her arrival known.

“Come here, children. I have something to eat.” She said, a slight smile appearing on her beak as the younger flyers appeared from the cave in front of herself. She lamented just how weak and thin they looked but it was just another feature of this season. She nodded somewhat approvingly as she heard the reaction of her children to this news.

“Thanks a lot, momma!” They cried nearly in unison, causing Volant to look into the horizon with a longing expression. She didn’t know just how long she’d be able to take this endless uncertainty over whether or not she’d see Petrie again. Her thoughts fixated on the memories about her son, refusing to accept that she wouldn’t be seeing him anymore. She twitched slightly as one of the boys asked her carefully.

“Do… don’t you want any, momma?” He asked while looking at the quickly disappearing pile of green food and berries. Volant exhaled deeply, trying to keep her worries to herself. Her children had already been through enough hardship without her starting to only add to their many worries.

“No thanks, Skybeak. I’m not hungry.” She said, speaking the truth. Her stress had taken her appetite away completely and besides, the children needed the food far more than she did. However, one of the other kids soon asked her more assertively, clearly worried about her wellbeing.

“You haven’t eaten anything in days, momma! That isn’t like you!” The girl yelled, causing the older female to look at her children in growing annoyance, slightly unnerved by the fact about how little the younger flyers seemed to care about their missing sibling and secretly, she was also slightly angered by it. Her voice grew more commanding as she gave her answer.

“As I’ve said before, you need it more than I do. Please, don’t ask any more questions, kids. Not now.” She said as she turned around, preparing to head somewhere where she could have a moment of peace and try to sort out her own thoughts about the current situation. Before she did that, however, she turned to look back at the horizon, checking that there were no threats to her children anywhere nearby.

However, at the exact moment she was about to take off, she noticed a distant, tiny spot in the sky above her, halting her departure immediately. If it was some kind of flying sharptooth, she’d show it that it had chosen a wrong mountain to stalk! However, it wasn’t long before she noticed that it was a very small flyer and not a sharptooth either. Volant narrowed her eyes as she looked at the other dinosaur, seeing that it was flying right towards her. As seconds passed, the female’s eyes slowly grew wider and wider, not really able to believe her eyes. She hardly even heard her own words as she cried at the wide skies.

“Petrie? Is… it really is you, thank the Bright Circle!”

The young flyer felt his heart beating more wickedly than ever in his chest as he heard those words. He was beyond fatigued after flying endlessly for days on end just to return home as soon as possible. He could hardly even flap his wings anymore but hearing his mother’s voice after all this time. It was a voice he had hoped to hear for so very long and he wasted no time giving his answer.

“Yep, it me, momma! Me home at last!” He cried after which he dived towards his home, all but ready to finally have a moment of rest and peace. The moments seemed to become ever slower as he approached the older flyer, not able to believe that this was truly happening. After everything he had went through… was this truly the end of it all? The boy decided to believe so and the world seemed to stop around him as he landed right into his mother’s deep embrace. Volant’s voice dipped with love and relief as she spoke to her son.

“Oh, Petrie. You can never understand just how I’ve missed you. But you are alone. Does that mean…?” She asked, the obvious implication immediately clear to Petrie. He gave his mother a weak smile, trying to ignore his adventure for now.

“No, they still alive. It a long story and Petrie want to tell about it later. But it good to be home, momma.” He said as his siblings gathered around him, most of them happy to see their long-missing brother again. The brown-colored flyer’s face turned into an ever wider smile even if Donnie and Terra didn’t escape his sight. The boy reveled in his newfound respect as Volant spoke to him, slightly starting to overcome the initial shock at seeing her son again.

“Of course, Petrie. I’ll listen to it all whenever you want. But please tell me that you are going to stay with us for good this time.” She said, dreading the possibility of Petrie embarking on another journey in the dark of the night. However, the younger flyer’s gestures already confirmed his answer even before he had given it.

“Yes, Petrie stay with you. Me adventure over now.” He said while yawning heavily, seeing just how vastly his siblings’ approach to him differed from the one he had become used to. His breaths grew easier by the second when Volant slowly releasing him from her embrace. The female’s voice wavered in happiness as she spoke to the boy.

“Thank goodness for that. It has been too long since our family last was complete. Welcome home, my son.” He said while Petrie looked around himself. Somehow this place seemed very different than the last time he had seen it, his earlier fears and urgency clearly having affected his thoughts back then. Even then, one new thought came to his mind as he looked at the welcoming faces all around him as well as the cold mountains in the distance.

This was going to be his life for a long while from now on. Not that it bothered him but… he couldn’t help but think about Ortin, Glide, Littlefoot and Ruby as well as the fact that it would be a long, long time since he’d see any of them again. As the flyer’s eyes gazed at the imposing beauty around himself, his mind wandered back to one of the most memorable scenes he had experienced…

The seven dinosaurs moved forward in complete silence, the weight of the moment hanging heavily upon each of them. Not only did Ducky’s loss still linger around them but the inevitable parting also bothered them greatly. It was clear to all of them that they were approaching the edge of the forest and after that, all of them would move on with their lives to their best abilities. It would be a long difficult process but it was something they’d have to go through for the sake of their lost friends. That meeting with the four dead dinosaurs still haunted their three surviving friends greatly but it was good to know that they held no grudge at them. The seven companions’ thoughts were interrupted when Ruby spoke in an unreadable voice.

“It seems like that is the edge of the forest, edge of the forest it seems like. I’m happy to get out of this place for good!” She said even if the implications weren’t lost to her either. For a moment, it was completely silent before Glide suddenly turned at her six companions and spoke to them in a grave voice.

“In that case, I think this is where we part ways. We did agree to only leave that forest together, after all.” She said while nodding at Ortin who was flying on her side. The boy returned the gesture, agreeing with his friend wholeheartedly. He looked at Petrie for a short moment before he asked the other male the obvious question in this situation.

“Indeed. Petrie, are you sure you wish to do like you said earlier?” He asked, not really expecting his friend to change his mind. The bluish flyer of course would have welcomed Petrie’s companionship but he had already fully accepted his decision. And indeed, Petrie’s answer was exactly the one Ortin had expected.

“Petrie sure. Me want to stay with me family from now on after everything that happened. But as me promised, Petrie will help you in the future when you need me help.” He said, starting to even look forward to his future on Ortin’s side. He could see that the other boy truly meant everything he had said and he simply couldn’t see Ortin becoming another Lenel or Haste. The bluish flyer gave Petrie a slight smile before speaking to him in a low voice.

“Very well. But you do understand that means that we won’t see each other in at least five Cold Times?” He asked, that thought a somber one for me. The brown-colored flyer gulped as he thought about that fact, trying to grasp just how long five Cold Times were. It was roughly the time that had passed since his first arrival in the Great Valley and when he’d next see Ortin and Glide, they could be whole different flyers. Even then, he’d still be their friend on that day and that was all that mattered.

“Yep. It a long time but Petrie make sure me never forget about you. But me wonder, where will we meet again?” He asked, knowing that to be a very good question. Glide was the first one to answer, the obvious answer coming to her mind immediately.

“How about Streli’s Hills? We all know where it is after all. If you ask me, I’d say we gathered there around the lightest days of the Warm Time as it’s a far nicer place during that time.” She said, immediately earning Ortin’s approval. Petrie took a deep breath as he took that piece of information in, just wondering how his coming endeavors with the two would turn out. He looked at the two with a wide smile before speaking to his two friends.

“Very well, Petrie remember it. Goodbye, Ortin and Glide. Thanks for being me friends when me needed them most.” He said, thinking somberly about his first steps after the Sand Cloud. Along with uncle Pterano, it had been these two who had given him the courage to move on. He’d miss them dearly during the seasons to come but at least he knew this parting would not be final. Ortin gave the other male a wide smile as he prepared to head towards the skies.

“You too, Petrie. You were there when I lost my dad and I won’t forget it. All the best until we meet again, my friend.” He said as he took off, followed by Glide’s farewells.

“See you again, Petrie, and stay safe!” She cried and before Petrie noticed it, the duo were but small dots in the distance. For a moment, Petrie felt like his eyes were growing moist again but Ruby’s next words broke the spell of the moment completely.

“I don’t want to insult you, Petrie, but I’m glad they’re gone. They were far from nice flyers.” She said while taking a relaxed breath. The tension between her and the duo had been clear all along and inside, the fastrunner had wanted to part ways with them earlier. Petrie didn’t turn to look at the girl as he gave his answer.

“Yes, they think many things Petrie not like either. But they better friends than many and me would like it if you didn’t speak bad about them!” He said, meaning every word. Ruby cringed at the flyer’s words, not really knowing whether or not she approved about Petrie’s plans but then again, it was none of her business. Her tone was a apologizing one as she spoke to the boy.

“Sorry for that, Petrie. I shouldn’t have said what I said.” She merely said, causing Petrie to slowly look at her. His expression was a cam but sad one as he spoke to the omnivore.

“They right about one thing, though. There no reason to delay this any longer. Petrie say we part ways here as well.” He said, causing the other dinosaurs to look at him sadly. None of them wanted to think about that inevitability but neither did they wish to challenge Petrie’s words. Littlefoot gulped as he moved closer to Petrie, his voice wavering as he spoke.

“Petrie… why won’t your family return to the Valley? In that way, at least we could stay together.” He asked, seriously not understanding the flyer’s decision. Petrie looked at him solemnly but he didn’t hesitate to give his answer.

“That because me could see me family not want back there and… neither does Petrie. The Valley… it just too small for me kind and momma seem to understand it too. It was a good home for a long time but the Mysterious Beyond not as bad as it was when we first reach the Valley. At least not some parts of it. But me promise me visit you some time, Littlefoot.” He said, earning a sad look from the longneck. Petrie then turned at Ruby and spoke to her in a silent voice.

“And Ruby… me hope we see again some time. Me not know when but… the world be smaller than one might think.” He said, knowing that to be true after his many adventures. The girl moved towards the boy and put her hand on his shoulder before giving him his answer.

“You’re completely right, Petrie. One way or another, we will meet each other again… and then I’ll no longer have to fear about putting you into needless danger.” She said with a smile, causing the boy’s face to turn into a wide smile. He hadn’t even parted with Ruby and Littlefoot yet and he already missed them dearly. It would be along wa…

“What’s wrong, Petrie? Did you fall asleep while standing?” Skybeak asked in slight worry, waking his brother up from his thoughts. In truth, only a few seconds had passed but Petrie had gone through that memory enough times fir it to simply flash through his mind. He twitched noticeably as he turned to look at the other boy, his voice a confused one as he gave his answer.

“Wh… no, no! Me… me just thinking about one thing…” He said, his expression revealing that memory to be a dear one for Petrie. His mood darkened momentarily as he heard a far too familiar voice speak to him.

“Why not tell us about it if you are simply going to stand still thinking about it? Or is it something you don’t want to share with us?” The voice belonged to Donnie and he tried to taunt his sibling but to his continued astonishment, Petrie calmed down immediately and answered to his former tormentor in a completely normal voice.

“Petrie tell you all about it in time, Donnie. Count on it.” He said after which Volant decided to interrupt that exchange. Even if she could see that Petrie no longer feared or even despised his brother, she knew that too much bad blood was between them to make Petrie’s homecoming less than perfect. He moved between them and spoke warmly to Petrie.

“Now, let Petrie rest a moment. Can’t you see that he has flown a long way just to get here as soon as he could. He deserves some time to recover from everything that has happened.” She knew she was right even if she was more than curious to learn about her son’s adventure herself. She could see that something bothered him deep inside but that could wait. All that mattered right now was to make Petrie as comfortable as possible. The boy yawned slightly as he looked at his mother, more than happy about her understanding in this moment.

“Thank you, momma. Me really need a moment to catch up with everything that has happened here but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere rather than here now. Me happy to be with all of you… including Terra and Donnie.” He said while winking at them, confirming once and for all that he wasn’t afraid of them. The duo looked at him in clear bitterness and annoyance but even Donnie had to admit that the times he could pick on his younger brother were over once and for all. He didn’t react to Petrie’s words in any way, signaling his resignation in front of the others. Volant crossed her hands as she nuzzled the boy one more time.

“I’ve got a feeling we have better times ahead of us than we could have expected, children. I’m happy you cared for Petrie after all.” She said, happy that her earlier assessment about her children’s opinion about their brother had been wrong.

The brown-colored flyer took a deep breath as he looked at his mother, this scene feeling like a happy sleep story after everything that had happened. There would be more adventures waiting for him in the future but for now, he was where he had wanted to be for so long: he was home.

The longneck looked at the pale sky above himself, shivering slightly due to the wind blowing through the rolling meadows of the Great Valley. Littlefoot’s mind was a complete flux and it was still filled with pain but… on the other hand, he also felt more peaceful than in a long time. Yes, he had lost so very, very much but he had also done his all to make things right. With any luck, his grandparents, Shorty and his father were in peace now and looking at him with pride and that thought gave him some of the courage he needed to go through every day.

Even then, that didn’t change the fact that he spent most of the evenings crying himself to sleep as he thought about the memories of his loved ones. He still spent most of his days alone and it didn’t help that most of the places in the Valley reminded him about some lost loved one but the fact that Petrie and Ruby were still out there alive gave him some courage he desperately needed.

The boy smiled slightly as he looked at the sky puffies above himself, thinking about the many days he had his friends had spent allowing their imaginations fly along with the winds. He missed them dearly and he hadn’t spent one moment hoping the duo were still here with him or that Ducky, Spike, Cera and Chomper would still be in this world. Her was more than happy to again be in the home of his childhood but…

“OUCH!”

Littlefoot yelled as he rose to his full height, rubbing his head as he looked at a large ball of ground sparkles drop into the ground next to him. The longneck frowned as he looked at the culprits but his expression softened as he saw who he was talking to. His expression was a surprisingly friendly one as he listened to the two young fastrunners apologize to him.

“Umm… sorry, Littlefoot! We didn’t mean to hit you!” Orchid said, causing the older boy roll his eyes in slight amusement. It wasn’t too long since he had been apologizing for the exact same issues and that was apparent in voice as well.

“Don’t worry about that. I’ve done that many times before as well. But how are you doing here?” He asked, knowing that the duo weren’t completely happy with their new refuge. Their arrival to the Valley had been a difficult one as well and the longneck still cringed deeply as he thought about that day. He knew how hated Ruby was here and he had lied about Arial and Orchid being some lost orphans who had no place to go. While that explanation had eventually been accepted by most of the adults, the fastrunners had still been told to stay near the Secret Caverns if they wanted to stay in the Valley. Arial was the first one to answer and her expression was more than conflicted as she spoke.

“Well… it’s nice that we don’t have to fear for sharpteeth but… the others are mean. It isn’t fun when everyone else thinks we’re going to attack them at any moment. Littlefoot… we know Ruby did something bad here but what?” She girl asked, not really understanding just yet why Ruby had loved this place so very much. Of course having friends helped but… very few dinosaurs even talked to her or her brother. A lot of the things Ruby had told about the Valley seemed far away to her right now and Littlefoot couldn’t really disagree.

“Yes, I know others might not want to see any of your kind again but believe me, things were far worse a few weeks ago. The Valley was almost drowned by the skywater and almost everyone fought with each other all day. At least the waters are almost gone and everyone has left you in peace for now. They will accept you In time, I promise you that much. As for what Ruby did… well, she dropped an egg and broke it which started this whole… adventure or tragedy.” He said with a heavy voice, again thinking about that fateful night. Orchid started a sentence before even thinking about what he was speaking about.

“Dropped an egg? What about that? Surely she d… Oh.” He suddenly stopped as he realized what Littlefoot was talking about. The longneck nodded at the other boy sadly, clearly regretting that implication himself. His answer was a forced one but he knew he had to be honest with the younger children.

“Yeah, Orchid. I hate to say it but many dinosaurs here have certain ideas about other kinds and Ruby only made those ideas stronger even if it was all an accident. To make things worse, the Valley almost forgave her but then she was attacked by Ms. Clubtail whose egg she had dropped and… Chomper killed her. And considering that she had spoken so long for the Valley accepting Chomper into the Valley…” He said, those memories making him sick even now. Arial gulped deeply as she thought about what she had just heard. She could only imagine what Ruby had gone through and bitterness for her sister’s fate started to rise within her.

“How could they do that to Ruby! Even Chomper had to have a good reason to do what he did! Why did Ruby even send us to this kind of place?” She said in frustration, earning an enthusiastic nod from Orchid. The longneck looked at the duo sadly, not really wanting to explain all of this to the duo but he didn’t really have a choice.

“The others are not evil, Arial, and they thought they were doing the right thing. And Ruby wanted you here because she wanted you to be safe and I promise you that this is the safest place to you even now. And besides, there are many dinosaurs here who would love to meet you. I might even introduce you to some of them some time.” He said, thinking about all the slightly more distant friends he had made over the seasons. Orchid, however, was far from impressed and he sighed deeply as he sat down on a small rock next to himself.

“If you want to, Littlefoot. I just wish we were with mommy and daddy or Ruby right now. At least in the Hanging Rock or the Desolate Rise we felt welcome and safe. I miss Ruby so very, very much.” He said, just thinking about all the days with his family.  He might be safe in the Valley but back then, he was happy.

The older boy looked at the fastrunner glumly, understanding just how he felt. Ruby had been more than distressed when she had first arrived in the Great Valley but she had at least had Chomper with her to immediately earn her more than enough friends. Littlefoot could only hope he was right about the two siblings’ chances to gain the Valley’s trust in time as otherwise their lives would become unbearable indeed.

However, Orchid’s voice made Littlefoot’s heart sink slightly. He could completely share his missing for the older fastrunner as the longneck still regretted the fact that she had decided to take her own path forward. The longneck didn’t mind watching over her siblings as it gave him at least some sense of purpose but Ruby and Petrie’s absence made him beyond mournful. Littlefoot exhaled deeply as he thought about the last time he had met one of his dearest friends.

The longneck looked at Ruby and Petrie for a moment, hardly able to grasp the weight of this moment. Yes, only a day before he had thought that both Petrie and Ruby were gone but that didn’t change what was happening right now. He was really witnessing the parting of the ways of the last survivors of the group of friends who had spent so many
happy days together and teased fate itself by sharing the many adventures. Speaking was a real chore to him as he fought against his tears.

“I’ll be there for both of you whenever you need me. Ruby… if this really is it, then I guess you have a few words to say.” The longneck said, earning an understanding nod from Ruby. It was clear the fastrunner wasn’t in any way happy about this moment but it couldn’t be helped. She bowed towards Arial and Orchid and put her hands on their shoulders, praying that they wouldn’t make this any more difficult and painful than it had to be.

“Yes, I do. Orchid, Arial, I stand behind my decision. You will go to the Valley with Littlefoot and stay there until my return, stay there until my return you will. I would love to stay with you as I know that you still miss mommy and daddy as much as I do. But ev…” She was suddenly cut short by Arial who spoke to her in a sad and pleading voice. Ruby hardly understood her words through her tears but she could very well tell what it was about.

“But mommy and daddy would want us to be together, Ruby! You’re all we have! please, do not force us to do this!” She yelled, causing Ruby to shake her head in an effort to clear it to her best ability. She had really hoped the duo had accepted the inevitable by now but apparently she’d have to do this the hard way.

“Indeed, Arial. I’m sure mommy and daddy would have wanted that but they would have also agreed with me. Besides, I am not either of them and I simply cannot guarantee your safety! There is a reason why children your age seldom survive in the Mysterious Beyond and I’m not going to risk seeing you torn to pieces in front of me! We all deserve far better than that!” She said, knowing that she was right. Arial sniffed as she nodded, not really able to argue with her sister for much longer. Ruby took another sigh before continuing her plea to her siblings.

“The Valley is a beautiful and peaceful place and I know Littlefoot will make sure you that you will not have any problems there. Now, I am not going to lie to: my deeds there earlier might make some of its denizens suspicious of you but I am sure you will be fine out there.” She said, earning a nod from the longneck. Orchid’s eyes narrowed as he gave his answer, more than concerned about it all. Even despite his age, he could see the wisdom within his sister’s words and he could already see that her decision was final. He then asked the older omnivore the one question that puzzled him.

“Okay, Ruby. But please tell us how long you plan to stay away. Surely we have to know just how long the wait will be?” He said glumly, causing the older fastrunner to look at him oddly. It was clear she didn’t want to give any promises but she still felt like she owed her brother some kind of an answer.

“I do not know, Orchid. I will be away for at least two Cold Times, maybe more. But do not worry: I will be there for you in time. You have my word.” She said, causing the boy’s head to fall further. It was a long time for a child that young to even truly comprehend and to him, it sounded just like Ruby was never going to return. Deep inside he knew that wasn’t true but he wasn’t able to hide his chagrin at that news.

Littlefoot looked at that scene with a long face, not really willing to join it himself. However, he knew he couldn’t simply stand still and with a forced voice, he asked the fastrunner the question swirling in his mind.

“But Ruby… how do you think the Valley will react to seeing you again? I’m not sure it’s a good idea for you to come back there.” He said, causing a pondering thought to rise to the fastrunner’s face. She had been right about to give her answer when she fully realized Littlefoot’s point and her confidence seemed to feel immediately as she started to think about the question.

“Well… I think I should be able to come up with something but at the very least, I’ll be able to send you some kind of message and if I cannot get you myself, then come to the Hanging Rock to meet me, Orchid and Arial. I know you don’t know each other but promise me that you’ll listen and obey Littlefoot at all times. He knows what to do.” She said to her siblings who nodded at their sister sadly.

Littlefoot had an even harder time holding back his tears. He was happy to see that Petrie and Ruby still had some plans but he just felt a wide void inside himself. Yes, he was going to the Valley but just what did he have there anymore? Trying to fight back those thoughts, she spoke to Ruby in the lowest voice that was still somewhat audible.

“I will miss you, Ruby. More than you can imagine.” He said, not really thinking about whether or not that claim was hyperbolic but right now it was what he felt. The fastrunner narrowed her eyes as she heard those words after which she sighed deeply. Her voice wavered deeply as she prepared to answer. However, before she could speak, that scene disappeared from Littlefoot’s mind as he heard Arial speak to him.

“Did you hear what I just asked, Littlefoot?” She asked, causing the longneck to twitch noticeably. He blinked as he heard those words, not even noticing that he had drifted that deeply into his memories. His voice was an unsure one as he finally reacted to the question.

“Huh? Oh, please say that again, Arial.” He said, slight embarrassed by those words. Arial rolled her eyes at the longneck’s lack of concentration but she didn’t waste time repeating her question.

“I asked whether or not you think she’ll be alright. We don’t think she should have been left out there all alone.” The girl asked, causing the longneck to look at her in a thoughtful but also calm face. He might have disagreed with her decision but he had no doubts about her capabilities. He took a brief pause before he finally spoke to the young omnivore.

“You may be at ease about that. I know her almost as well as you do and I know she will go through any hardship to keep her word of seeing you again. I have no idea what she is up to now but I promise you that she’ll return just like she promised.” He said, not really knowing whether the duo believed him but that was the only thing he could say right now. The two siblings looked at each other in clear uncertainty but before anyone else could say anything, the three dinosaurs heard a loud call from above themselves.

“Hey, it was true! Littlefoot, you are back!” The longneck’s eyes widened as he heard that voice, not really having expected to hear it again. He turned to look at the speaker and saw him just in time to see him land into the ground next to him. Littlefoot spoke to him happily, more than eager to hear what the newcomer had to say.

“Hey there, Guido! And yes, I am back. How have you been?” He asked but to his deep chagrin, when Guido looked at the two omnivores, he gulped deeply and whispered to the longneck.

“I… is it wise to stay close to them? We… we cannot know if… if they do something similar as Ruby.” He said, almost shuddering as he spoke to the other boy. Littlefoot, however, wasn’t willing to listen to that for a second and he spoke to the glider in a determined and uncompromising voice.

“Drop it already. I promise to you that they won’t hurt any dinosaur while they are guests of the Valley.” He said with a deep voice, causing Guido’s face to darken slightly. However, he did as told and he didn’t want to linger in that issue for any longer.

“O… okay. If you say so. But I’d like to ask if you saw Petrie out there? I mean… he hasn’t returned here since he went to look for you.” He said with a nervous voice, dreading the chance that he’d have to hear about the demise of his closest friend. However, Littlefoot’s expression immediately confirmed that the flyer was at least alive and neither did his words keep the glider wondering for any longer.

“Don’t worry, Guido, Petrie’s fine. He went on to rejoin his family and they should visit us some time again. I bet you want to hear all about his whereabouts?” He asked, knowing the answer already. He knew Guido liked him as well but Petrie had always been the only one to whom Guido was truly close. The green-colored male took a wide smile after hearing those words but his answer surprised the longneck completely.

“Of course I do but before you tell me, I… I think there is one other thing you should know.” He let out a nervous chuckle after finishing and the longneck cocked his head in clear interest as he gave his answer. Something within Guido’s tone really raised his interest.

“Well, what is it?” He asked simply to which the glider’s smile only widened. He turned to look towards the entrance of the Valley as he gave his answer.

“We just received a new group of Farwalkers… and Ali is among them.” He said, knowing that the larger boy wanted to hear that piece of news. And indeed the longneck’s eyes widened completely as he heard those words and he stuttered severely as he tried to form some kind of an answer. He was just so completely astonished about hearing about her as the tragedies of the past season had almost wiped her from his mind. Now, however, those buried feelings flowed back into his hearts, warming it heavily.

“A… Ali? You mean… she’s already here?” He asked to which Guido nodded happily. His voice was a meek but happy one as he gave his answer.

“I kinda figured you’d be interested in hearing this.” He said after which Littlefoot’s happiness only grew more profound. He was already about to storm off before he noticed the wondering faces of Orchid and Arial looking at him. The longneck stopped to speak to them briefly before heading to see one of his closest friends.

“Orchid, Arial, remember not to wander too far from here in order to keep the calm with others. Guido, thanks a lot for telling me this! See you all around!” He said as he ran towards the entrance to the Valley, more than eager to meet Ali again. It seemed like he still had more dinosaurs he deeply cared about in his life than he had ever imagined and despite the sorrow lingering within his heart. Even then, he couldn’t help but feel that the female longneck’s appearance was a true opportunity to put the recent hardships behind himself for good.

A deep yawn escaped from Ruby’s mouth as she felt her consciousness slowly starting to return from the land of sleep stories. The first thing she noticed was that the morning was relatively warm and for the first time in a long while, she didn’t really even feel the cold through her plumage. The fastrunner slowly rose a sitting position and her face too an expression she hadn’t felt in ages: that of peace.

Inside, the guilt and self-hate still lingered but to her clear relief, the all-encompassing fear and stress were gone. The girl could hardly believe that there wasn’t some sharptooth bound to get her or some friend or family member to be saved. Now, she was alone and that feeling was sweeter to her than any other she could have come up with. She felt… free for the first time since leaving the Valley.

Ruby walked towards the opening of the cave she was sleeping in, smiling slightly as she saw the bright dawn over the small forest she had claimed as her home. It was located about half way from the Land of the Dancing Waters to the Great Valley and it seemed in many ways like a small paradise to her. She hadn’t seen any sharptooth nearby and it had just enough food so that she didn’t have to go hungry even in the middle of the Cold Time. Besides, that place was more beautiful than any other place she had seen since the Valley with its steep hills and glimmering ponds.

Another thing that made the omnivore breath easier than before was the fact that her mind again felt like her own. The spirits’ influence seemed to be completely gone which was something that seemed like a true blessing for her. She had still spent many nights crying herself to sleep over Chomper and her parents but slowly, the girl could feel her mind starting to recover from the many ordeals of the recent pasts. Despite her losses, she wouldn’t have believed only a short time ago that she’d even feel this happy ever again. It would still be a long way since she’d be the same fastrunner she had been but she was on the right path now at least.

Her thoughts were suddenly interrupted as she felt her belly letting a gurgling sound like it always did in the early morning. The girl turned to look at her right, listening to the sounds of the small woodland before deciding that there was no danger anywhere to be seen. Quickly, she dashed downhill towards her favorite pond, knowing that it wouldn’t disappoint her this time either. She ran for a few minutes straight, avoiding any spots of hard water in the ground before she finally stopped in front of a small, lake that was fed by a small and calm water path.

Eager to extinguish her hunger, Ruby bowed towards the waters, waiting for the right moment to strike. It wasn’t long until she saw some movement in front of herself and she didn’t waste any time seizing the opportunity. However, her hit was a complete miss and Ruby couldn’t help but cringe deeply as she felt the frigid water hitting her face. The omnivore crossed her hands over her chest, trying to warm herself up again.

While waiting for the water to dry up, she looked at the looming hills around herself, never getting enough from the majesty of this place and about this chance to reconcile with her past at long last. The omnivore knew that she loved these simple and stress-free days but deep down, she couldn’t help but feel the loneliness starting to creep into her heart.
All her love she had been surrounded by the dinosaurs she loved and with whom she would have been ready to share everything and now… she was alone.
She couldn’t help but imagine her siblings being here with her now, laughing and cheering her up in her glum moments after which they could play through the day. Ruby couldn’t help but feel glum about their absence but even then, she never forgot just why she had chosen this path. Now, there was absolutely no way she could let her mistakes hurt those around herself and she didn’t have to look after anyone anymore. And she still accepted the fact that she had made the right choice.

Still, the girl couldn’t help but wonder just how her brother and sister were doing right now. Were they happy in the Valley? Had the Valley even accepted them in? That was one thought that had haunted the back of her mind for a long time now but there was nothing she could do about it. She couldn’t really just turn around and head to the Valley to check they were okay. For better and worse, they were away from her right now.

Even then, the fastrunner had a faraway look on her face as she thought about her siblings as well as her friends. She could only hope they were alright right now and deep inside, she knew they were. Her face turned into a slight smile as she thought about her last moments with the only remaining dinosaurs she loved in this world.

The longneck’s words caused Ruby’s face to fall as she could see just how genuine the look of sorrow was on Littlefoot’s face. His expression seemed to make her courage fall as well as it only underlined the weight of this moment. The omnivore’s voice nearly died down as she tried to answer but it wasn’t long until she finally managed to form some kind of an answer.

“I think I know just how you feel, Littlefoot. But this is not the end, Littlefoot. I promise.” She said with a low voice. The longneck looked at her with a somber face and his voice carried the same feeling even if it wasn’t quite as broken as before.

“Ruby, I don’t know if you understand but my mother said that she will always be with me, even if I couldn’t see her. I always wondered what that meant really but believe it or not, it was she and dad who told me to follow you. Without them, I would still be lying out there alone. What I’m trying to say is that… maybe we can do the same.” He said to which Petrie answered in a more upbeat voice even if it was still far from a happy one.

“That what Ducky and the others promise to us as well! Me not sure how it work but me more than happy to try!” He said, earning a soft smile from the other boy. Littlefoot tried to gather his thoughts as he continued from where he left off.

“There was this another thing one old dinosaur told me just after my mother died. He said that it was the things we thought each other that kept us together and… we all have thought each other a lot, haven’t we?” He asked, hoping that the others would see the point he was trying to make. Ruby frowned at those words but decided against challenging that claim. And besides, there was some sense she could see in the male’s words. Her voice trembled deeply as she gave her answer.

“Y… yes there is. More than I could ever think about. From each and every one of you.” He said while looking at each and every one of her companions. Petrie looked at her with wide eyes and his voice was more than appreciating.

“And you thought a lot to all of us! Like what stardays are!” He said to which Ruby merely nodded glumly. She answered shortly, just thinking about everything her friends had said.

“Thanks, Petrie. I hope I’ve taught you more than that as well but it’s something at least, isn’t it?” She asked, more than appreciating the still-clear feelings of appreciation of her friends. For a fleeting moment, she started to wonder whether she could keep her calm at all and that became all the more difficult as Littlefoot spoke to her again.

“You’ve taught us far more, Ruby and I’ll never forget any of it.” He said with a sad smile, causing a single tear to flow down the fastrunner’s cheeks. After a few seconds, she sniffed briefly before spreading her arms and gesturing her two remaining friends to approach her.

“Come here, both of you. For old times’ sake.” She said and neither Petrie or Littlefoot hesitated to do as they were told. She wept even more as she felt one of Littlefoot’s legs and Petrie’s left hand touch her back as she embraced both of them deeply. That moment seemed to last forever in Ruby’s eyes and again, she lived through the day she met that duo for the first time, how they had made her starday as happy as it simply could be and how they defended her against the Valley’s fury. Her heart was beyond heavy as she looked at Petrie and Littlefoot’s eyes, trying to keep her mind in the task at hand. She simply couldn’t let her emotions take hold now and make her reverse the decision that she knew was the right one for everyone involved. Slowly, she allowed the trio’s embrace to break and she spoke to them in a low, trembling voice.

“Thanks, both of you. I’d love to go with you but this is where we have to go our separate ways. Goodbye, Littlefoot, Petrie as well as Orchid and Arial.” She said while looking at the four dinosaurs. Each of them nodded back at the fastrunner but the first one to speak was Petrie.

“See you again, Ruby. As well as you, Littlefoot. Petrie have to now but Petrie visit you once the Warm Time approaches. Bye, both of you!” He yelled as he took off, leaving the two groundwalkers to look after him with longing eyes. Knowing that the time had come, Littlefoot spoke to the two younger omnivores.

“Well, let’s go Orchid and Arial. We have a long way to go.” He said, knowing that his goodbyes with Ruby had already been said. The two siblings seemed to hesitate for a brief moment and just as they were starting to approach the longneck, they turned towards their sister and moved to embrace her for a short while before being ready to leave her.

“Goodbye, Ruby. We will wait for you every day we spend in the Valley!” They said before their older sister returned the gesture and nuzzled each of them for a brief moment. Her words were nearly obscured by her tears but they were still intelligible to the two children.

“I know, Orchid and Arial. And I’ll miss you as well. But off you go now. Littlefoot’s waiting for you.” She said and with forced movements, the duo let go of their sister and turning towards the longneck with deep, bitter sobs. Ruby looked after them for a moment before she realized that her own emotions were slowly pouring out of the shell she had tried to build to herself. The omnivore turned around and started to walk into the distance alone, with her tears starting to drop into the ground increasingly heavily.

After a few seconds, she turned to look at the forms of her siblings and Littlefoot which were quickly growing more distant and to her shock, Arial did the same at the same moment. The younger female waved at her sister one last time before Ruby did the same. Forcing herself to move forward, Ruby turned away from her siblings and headed towards her own future, not looking back for the second time.

Ruby hardly noticed the ripples in the water that her tears were causing, those memories completely having drawn her attention. Even now, that meeting was a difficult one for her to go through and she knew it would be for a long time. Even then, the knowledge that she wasn’t alone was enough for Ruby right now as she wanted to believe that the small flicker of warmth lingering deep within her heart was built there by Ducky, Chomper, Cera and Spike as well as her still living friends.

The fact that they had said themselves that they would be with her was something that gave the fastrunner strength and hope even now. She couldn’t have asked for more and
even if she’d never forgive her guilt in starting this entire adventure of death, pain and loss, the fact that least her friends didn’t blame her for it was something that gave her a modicum of ease. The past couldn’t be changed but with her friends’ love, maybe she could prevent things like that from happening in the future again.

Suddenly, the fastrunner’s hand again sank into the cold waters and this time, she could feel her claws impaling one scaly swimmer, it’s struggles over almost immediately. Ruby slowly raised it to the surface and started her meal while looking at the skies with a thoughtful look.

One day, she’d meet her friends again and find her own destiny and even make her parents proud of her. She’d repay her debt to everyone she had harmed to the best of her abilities and she’d become the fastrunner she was born to be. But for now, she was more than happy to enjoy this small moment of peace after all that had happened. A weak smile rose to her face as the Bright Circle’s pale light illuminated the pond and its surroundings, giving much needed hope to the lone form on its shores.

And this indeed is the end of Separate Ways. The journey that started nearly three years ago concludes with this chapter and I cannot thank those enough who have followed it all the way to this point. I’ve been more than happy about all the feedback I’ve received over these years and I probably couldn’t have done this without your help. I hope this final chapter brings you some closure after everything that has happened.

As for my own future, it is very much uncertain. I’ll likely continue doing the prompts in the coming months but I won’t take up bigger projects at least until June because of my university stuff and a planned trip. That being said, I cannot promise at all I’ll make another long LBT fic and certainly nothing close to the length of Separate Ways. I hope you all understand and see you again with my next short story which should release sometime next month. I’ll take it easier with writing from now on overall. But again, thanks to everyone who has read this story and to those who have shared their thoughts about it!

Anagnos: Thanks for the review. The first part of this chapter certainly is a difficult one and the Gang certainly had a lot of heartbreaks to deal with. Their journey has certainly been a difficult one and I simply couldn’t make its end too much easier. And yep, Littlefoot’s tale was worth telling even if I was unsure about its inclusion at first. So thank you for wanting to hear it.

And yep, the latter half of that installment was a happier one even if it still had its own melancholy. Even the surviving members of the Gang will never be the same again. Their dead friends’ appearance will help them move forward but the pain is still there, never to leave. And yep, we indeed saw more about the Gang’s futures in this chapter and I hope you’ll like those sequences!

rhombus: It’s good to hear you liked the Gang’s reunion as it was one scene I decided to include only after I had started this chapter. I feared it might be a controversial scene but it’s good to hear it was well-received. And yep, that meeting was a real blessing to the Gang as it was paramount for them to know that their friends were at relative peace. As for the final part of the review, yes, the Gang’s members have finally reconciled with each other but they also have come to realize they no longer share the same path in life. It’s likely their friendship will last forever but it will have a different form than before.

jaythefox02: In fact, I hadn’t expected to include Petrie’s feelings at first myself but I thought it would fit that scene well. After all, the duo were very close to each other and especially after losing the swimmer, it wouldn’t really be a wonder if Petrie found that he had some romantic feelings for Ducky. And yep, I’ll never resurrect a character in any story as it just takes all tension and drama away immediately. But overall, thank you a lot for your reviews and I truly wish you found this conclusion a worthy one!

And with this chapter, we have finally reached the stunning conclusion of the Separate Ways. It has been a rather one-of-a-kind achievement to watch this story from start to finish that has managed to throw unexpected twists in our direction which only added tension to the already thrilling spectacle of a story. Confession time, I will be rather sad to see this story finally reach its conclusion, but like all stories, there must be an ending. Throughout this journey, we have seen the best and the worst of the gang when put into an unfortunate state, the sheer despair they’ve had to endure against not just adversaries and ungenuine allies, but also supernatural powers from beyond the mortal world. Together, these brave young souls have overcome obstacle after obstacle despite how much they continued to weigh down on them.

The way how the gang ultimately decided to separate from each other is one that left quite a bit of opening for each and every one of them to consider what their future will eventually be like. Whether it be Petrie wishing to have a nice simple life with his family, Littlefoot facing uncertain life in the place he once called home with his newfound friends, or Ruby’s life in solitude marking the start of her new life alone in the Mysterious Beyond certainly is a new starting point for all of them. But as they have suffered, so have they conquered their fear of the unknown and the bond they all share, while forever changed, has become stronger as a result. I am very much pleased that it was done in a believable way that certainly fit their portrayal.

All of these hardships our beloved characters have had to go through will have left visible marks on their very core. However, we are also aware of the fact that they have always been rather profound and bold in their quest to continue their existence is a genuine acknowledgement of their knowledge and tenacity to hold on to the bitter end. This was a sensational conclusion to an astounding story that has been in my heart from the very start, and it truly was a good way to close this story. The events depicted here have changed the characters’ lives forever and trying to cope with all that has happened is going to be one difficult task. :wave

And so, after all the bloodshed and destruction they have witnessed, and many near-misses with death after repeatedly getting caught in the crossfire, the survivors finally get the ending they deserved. What has undoubtedly been their most horrifying adventure yet has come to a close with each taking a new path to settle into a new chapter of their lives that will hopefully last as long as they wish it will.

Even so, the endings they get won't be all happiness ahead. Not only will they be forever tainted by the hardships tragedies that have befallen them and the friends that were lost, but each may have their own obstacles still to come near or far into the future. Petrie will surely be forever haunted by the death of a friend that was so dear to him, and two certain siblings may try their best to make that much more difficult for him to live with, but he has apparently grown to resist Donnie and Terra's antics, and they can clearly see now that this is a completely different Petrie than the timid one they knew before. Once Petrie finally gets his story out of his chest, he can finally live in peace and accept what has become of him and his friends.

I can only wonder how the Valley will take Littlefoot bringing Ruby's two siblings into the Valley, given how even after so much time has passed the residents may still hold a long-lasting grudge against the Gang. Nevertheless, Littlefoot is still the determined Longneck we've all grown to know him for, and he will try to give Ruby's siblings as good a life as he can make them.

As for Ruby, deciding to live alone as a wanderer seemed to be the only path she could accept, but she seems to be happy not having to worry about anyone but herself. She has full trust in Littlefoot to keep her siblings safe in the valley (if they are accepted, which I guess is something only we readers can guess), and she seems settled with the completely different life she now has compared to her previous life in the valley.

In all, I think each of them got an ending they greatly deserved, and maybe one day their paths may cross again, but for now it is time to settle down and try to live in peace while recovering from their recent hardships and haunting tragedies. This may have been an adventure that ultimately led to them living completely different lives unlike their previous journeys, but sometimes life will poke at you in the most unexpected ways.

This has been one of the most enjoyable LBT stories I've ever read, as far as drama and suspense is concerned. This Game of Thrones-esque story gave us everything that could be spiced into a adult-fantasy LBT story, and the GoT-esque ending with each of the kids going their "Separate Ways" to live their new lives (pun intended) was the most proper way to end this tale of adventure and tragedy. It's not every day we get to see an LBT story at a scale like this, but this will go down in history as an LBT fanfiction treasure. You should be proud of yourself for creating this masterpiece! :)petrie
Suddenly, I've written so many fanfics that I can't possibly list them all! :P

And now the journey that begun what feels like so long ago finally comes to an end, with the surviving members of the gang going their own separate ways.  Despite this being the final chapter in the saga, it is obvious that each of the characters are about to begin a new chapter of their lives.  A chapter that is not only open to hope, but will also be tinged with the lingering, if fading, sense of loss.  Though each of them finally gained some sense of closure it will take some time for the sad memories of the past several months to be reclaimed by the joys of life.

All in all I do think that each character's chosen path in life fits their actions in this story and their personalities.  Littlefoot is to return to the valley to reclaim his needed place, and, as is keeping with his character, he is bringing Ruby's two siblings with him.  I think we all know that he will ensure that the valley ends up accepting those two at least for a time.  For Petrie, he is finally going to return to his family and, perhaps informed by his journey and the fixation on familiar ties in the flyer herds, will in time bestow some of his life lessons to his siblings.  Ruby, meanwhile, seems set to wander for at least some time.  Though for her this is not so much a sad ending as a chance for her to learn what lessons she feels necessary to be on her own.  Then, once she feels confident on her own, she plans on returning to her family.  There is certainly the potential to explore their individual journeys going forward, but this is the suitable ending place for this story.

In life there are seldom entirely sad endings or happy endings, but rather various shades of bittersweet.  For the journey these characters have followed this is as kind of an ending as could be expected, and it does indeed suit the general narrative of this story - which is uncompromising in showing hard truths and making characters face the realities of their mistakes.  This story was always enjoyable to read, even when it put our characters through difficult situations, and, in some cases, brought them to a tragic end.

Making a story of this scope and with this level of drama and tragedy can be difficult, and for some readers it may not be their preferred form of narrative, but you have certainly succeeded in this endeavor, and you deserve a lot of credit for seeing it through to his final conclusion.  Thank you very much for sharing this story with all of us! :)
