"The last thing I could remember was when the night sky was lit so brightly by the Aurora Borealis, which was unusual, even in Nome.  There were rumors it was even been seen far south, where it has never gone before.  I was with my family, watching as the unthinkable happened...  The sky itself cracked open like broken glass...  Family...  Jenna...!  JENNA!!"

Balto's eyes popped open and his head was up in a flash, his heart racing.  How long was he out?  He starting looking around to answer the second, more worrying question.  But as he scanned his surroundings, he came to the third question...  "Where am I?"  The snowy mountainous landscape was unfamiliar to him.  Dark and foreboding...

A sudden but light sneeze not far from him attracted his attention to a small mound of snow.  A shivering mound of snow.  Maybe...  Balto had little trouble getting to his feet and walked over, but as he neared the thing, he knew right away it was too small to be Jenna.  But, he might as well check anyway.  He stood next to it and began brushing the snow away from the creature with his paw, and his eyes widened with surprise...

The little creature, curled up tightly to stay warm, was hairless and long-necked, almost like a strange reptile.  He had never seen something like this in his entire life, and was momentarily unsure what to do next.  But a closer look showed the critter is young, like a cub, and is practically immobile & and freezing to death...

Snow began to fall around them, and Balto searched around to see a nearby mountain, with a slab of hard rock sticking out of its base.  The wolf-dog did not hesitate to gently lift the creature onto his back and carried it to the shelter.  Once placed back down out of the snow, it curled up again and shivered, even sniffled.  Balto curled up around him, hopeful to keep it warm as they would have to wait out the snow...

OK, just got word from Pterano, and he's going on a trip, so we can start the story now.  He's still welcome to jump in anytime he gets back.  I'll set up the beginning.

I'm not entirely sure about Powerglide's size in G1, but I had thought of having his alternate form as either a U2 spy plane or a Global Hawk UAV (which are both large planes) with special wings that could fold to a third of its length for maneuverability, and a pair of pylons for additional surveillance or remote-controlled smaller UAVs.

Here's a draft of my Autobot Pretenders.  Let me know if they should be tweaked:

Name:  Shaderazor, AKA Kenneth “Ken” Morson
Affiliation:  Autobot Pretender
Pretender Humanoid Form:  Caucasian, light brown hair, light green eyes (can turn glowing blue when using telescopic vision), concealed compact sub-machine gun & punching dagger in right forearm, energy field discharger in left forearm.

Autobot Form:  Dark steel blue, glowing blue eyes, carbon-atom sharpened blades in forearms, elbows, knees, & foot insteps, pulse thrusters in shoulder blades & lower back ribcage

Alternate Forms:  Rocket-propelled guided arrow, carbon-atom sharpened arrowhead with cavity for additional weapons:  thermite bomb & EMP pulse.

Personality:  Calm, cunning, soft-spoken, observant

Background:  Shaderazor, and his teammate, K-9, served as scouts for the Autobots, and had left Cybertron during the war to intercept Decepticon spies across the galaxy.  We would never return to Cybertron before its destruction, and instead moved further to rejoin their comrades.  They would soon find Earth, and makes contact with Optimus Prime, and would become spies and bodyguards for the human allies and their families.  His cover includes that of a well-known competing archer.

Affiliation:  Autobot Pretender
Pretender Canine Form:  Large Sarloos Wolfdog (large as an adult Great Dane), brown eyes (can turn glowing violet when using telescopic vision), extending metal fore claws, frequency-changing bark.

Autobot Canine Form:  Polished steel, glowing violet eyes, sharpened fore claws & teeth, dual blasters from shoulders, massive crossbow along back to fire either standard explosive bolts or Shaderazor in his alternate arrow form.

Alternate Forms:  Anthropomorphic canine w/ organic fur under metal armor plates, digigrade legs, automatic crossbow, double Chinese-style sabers

Personality:  Noble, fierce, may have developed slight mental characteristics of a typical dog, very loyal

Background:  Same as Shaderazor’s, however using cover as a companion animal, alternating observing posts between Shaderazor and the humans.
