Title: The resting place of Littlefoot's mother
Post by: Malte279 on March 28, 2005, 09:01:52 AM
Hi!
We didn't see a or hear a lot of Littlefoot's mother in the sequels (only in LBT5, 9, and 10) but I guess we can take it for granted that Littlefoot did not sort of forget about her. I wonder if they are still in sort of a contact the way they were in the original movie.
I thought about a land before time story in which Littlefoot is forced to come accross the very spot where his mother died. A land before time fan and poster in the network54 forum considers writing a story in which Littlefoot intentionally visits his mother's resting place.
As for Littlefoot visiting or being confronted with his mother's resting place, it is a delicate topic. One ought not to forget that it would be located far from the Great Valley in a wasteland that provides little food, but many dangers. In fact if Littlefoot went there, he would put his own life at a very high risk. With Littlefoot apparently having a kind of spiritual contact to his mother (Things you see with your heart only) I think there needs to be a VERY good reason for him to go there.
Perhaps I'm too much of a realist, but the direct use for Littlefoot's mother (who told him to go on in the original movie) would be little.
What would Littlefoot find at the place where his mother died?
The most realistic, but sort of uncomfortable variant is bones.
Yet one almost romantic idea would be to show the death of Littlefoot's mother as a process for the renewal of life. Dinosaurs and other creatures may have been saved by scavenging her. Her bones may provide shelter for small creatures protecting them from the hostile land around. Her body (ugly as this may sound) may have provided the fertilizer to let a little green patch grow amidst the decaying wasteland. It could be quite philosophical a story (while I strongly advocate avoiding obvious religious topics in LBT).
But like I said, I think Littlefoot really needs a VERY good reason to take the risk of the journey in the first place. There are no hints that would suggest that he needs something physical like her resting place to feel his mother's presence.

Hi Malte,

sounds very interesting.  Will he find the bones of his mother or nothing at all?  But we may not forget that LBT by smaller children are watching, too.  In addition I do not believe really that Littlefoot is interested in such a way thereafter is, to visit this place.  Many bad memories  :cry  , right?

Greetings

I totally agree with you in not ascribing Littlefoot some kind of desire to visit the place of his mother's dead like humans may want to visit the grave of a loved one. In that story I'm planning this whole thing would be but of minor importance, actually an episode that could be left out without changing anything about the story. In that plot circumstances force Littlefoot to cross this place, even though he is even reluctant to do so.
It sure is a difficult topic in a story for kids, but I don't think it would be much tougher than anything kids were confronted with watching the original movie.

I shudder to think how they would handle something like that in the sequels, especially under Grosovar's (sp?) care.

Go for it, man! I think it'd be a cool ideaa, but I'd play it more as something that happens during one of their adventures and not point of the trip. But I'd make it so that the visit to his mom's resting place would still be context.

well no one will like the two cents I put in but oh well.

I like the idea. and it makes perfict sence too. modern-day animals today actualy become attracted to the presence of the remains of a family member and feel they must see the spot where they died. (reason is up to you, your story) as for a reason to leave the GV (great Valley) littlefoot will and your right need a reason to leave. suggestions I have is more of a spiritual and ghostly in part. other ideas you can try is...
reincarnation (quite populare)
hauntings (been done god knows how many times)
unusual weather in the great valley (mainly going with the hauntings again)

As for a motive to go there, I already have one story plot in mind in which Littlefoot could be "forced" to go to that place. It would be one scene of the story, but not one essential for the plot.

I would have to tell the whole story for that. He wouldn't go alone though. Coming past the resting place of Littlefoot's mother would be more or less a "side effect" of the route they had to take; a route prescribed by someone else.

That's the plan (most of them at least).
