Silver Screen / Horror Movies

Psycho still does it for me, and Deliverance comes in a close second. Not the movies I'd recommend watching late night and/or alone.

It's Party Time! / Life Without Plastic
« on: December 14, 2014, 04:48:46 PM »
Without plastic there would be no shatter-proof bottles. Imagine taking a shower then knocking that glass shampoo bottle off the shelf onto the floor. Or washing dishes and the glass detergent bottle falls into the sink. Hate stopping what I'm doing to fish glass fragments out of the disposal, or risk cutting my hands and/or feet badly enough to call 911. Don't forget protective helmets and padding for sports. From a safety standpoint, plastic is a lifesaver. Now if they could make plastic out of something other than petroleum byproducts.

The Fridge / Huge glacier calving caught on camera

Thank you so much for posting that. Watching that and the allusion to southern Manhattan breaking up like that was both frightening and enlightening.

It is true a majority of Americans -- and sorry to admit that a fair majority of my fellow Midwesterners -- still think climate change and global warming as crap science.  Heck, these people still don't believe in evolution.
I'd like to be there generations from now when their great-grandchildren can no longer raise wheat, corn, or soybeans in the American heartland.  Talk about an "I told you so" moment.

James Garner whose career spanned back to the early 60s is gone. I just loved his work as Pat from LBT X which I will watch tonight. RIP Jim. You will be missed.  :cry

I have the original LBT on both VHS and DVD as well as the DTV DVD's. But the best thing I own was found a few years ago at a flea market. LBT bedsheets? Oh yes. Just browsing the various venders' looking for antique perfume bottles and glassware when I found one booth that had various items from times past. A complete, mint in package, twin bed set of fitted and flat sheets and pillow case. I hoped for a comforter but so what? The GoF on my bed!  :DD Can't get better than that.

They're now stored away for my six-year old niece who's so into dinosaurs and loves LBT thanks to auntie. :)
Those exist??  :wow    :D
Yes they did. The woman who sold them to me said JC Penney had a whole line of LBT decor from bedding to wall decals, even lamps.  She remembers getting drapes for her grandkids' rooms. :wow
This was back in the late 80s into early 90s. These are times I wish for a time machine, then I could take a photo and have the real Gof! :lol

General Land Before Time / Noticed a mistake

That is creepy. Looks as if the animator drew an extra leg where the tail should be.

Thanks to your sharp eyes. Nice screen cap. :)

Silver Screen / Cloud Atlas

My big complaint about it though, is with my favorite story arc. Set in a 22nd century Korea, I did enjoy the futuristic sci fi dystopian setting. There is just one problem. Remember the amazing make-up job this film has? It's at this point where it turns against them. The main protagonist, Sonmi 451 was played by a native Korean. But most of the other cast members were white people with eye makeup to make them look Asian. Jim Sturgess, James D'Arcy, and probably the most ridiculous of them all, Hugo Weaving, all had what would be considered "yellowface" done to make their eyes altered to look Asian, but nothing else was done to remove the white features of their faces.

Cloud Atlas' yellow pancake makeup was the only downer. What? A shortage of Asian actors? Reminds me of the 1950s MGM movie Showboat's casting. Lena Horne was to play Julie but TIIC thought she was too light , so they cast Ava Gardner and put on the "light Egyptian" makeup so she'd look biracial. Just a big thing with me since I'm mixed and far from white.

But the movie was wonderful and quite faithful to the novel. Yes it's sprawling and so many stories within a story, and it didn't stay long enough in theaters. I had to reserve the DVD at the library then wait several weeks for availability. This lady loved the movie despite those critics who never bothered to read the novel.

Silver Screen / The Great Gatsby

Personally, I think the movie was overdone. There were ALOT of unnecessary things in the movie that didn't need to be there. I remember reading the book my junior year of high school for my English class. We watched the original movie that was made in the 70s, and I quite liked it. However, I was more than aggravated  :anger by the fact that they played RAP music at Gatsby's party in the 1920'S!!!!!!!!!! GRR MADE ME SO MAD!!!!!! >.<  :bang However, I didn't mind the classy jazz remake of BeyoncÈ's "Crazy In Love" and the songs that actually DID sound authentic and stayed true to the time period of the film.

As much as I love Beyonce and Jay-Z, with the exception of the Crazy in Love rearrangement, contemporary rap and R&B had no place in this movie. What was Baz thinking?? The only music remotely resembling "period correct" was Rhapsody in Blue but that wouldn't be composed until 10 years after the story took place. The 1920s is a fascinating period musically and to use a modern R&B/hip hop score is IMO totally disrespectful of the jazz and blues artists of the time. What? Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong weren't good enough for this film?
Call me a traditionalist, but at least Leo's performance was worth my time and money. Otherwise, I should've saved those $$$ and waited for the $1 Redbox rental.

General Land Before Time / Who is the funniest character in LBT?
« on: May 22, 2013, 04:13:01 PM »
Good comedy is all in the timing. One must know what and when to say or do for the laughs. For me it's Petrie hands down for classic slapstick.
As for a character who does essentially "nothing", except eat, may I nominate Spike for the Jerry Seinfeld "It's about nothing" Comedy Excellence Award.  :lol

Granted, Spike does has his serious and heroic moments, yet watching that kid grub cracks me up (think Jethro of the old Beverly Hillbillies TV show) every time,  and those facial expressions are priceless. :)

Land Before Time Captions / Ducky the Alcoholic

I thought it was water. It looked like water. Yep, yep, yep.

This poster speaks from an unpleasant childhood experience. Never drink from your dad's glass thinking it's water. In that case it was far from it.  I was about 7 at the time.

General Land Before Time / Grandpa's Illness
« on: April 29, 2013, 02:41:27 PM »
I often thought it was a rare strain of flu. The symptoms Grandpa had almost echoes how the flu affects us. Sudden lethargy, fever, body aches, that "swimmy head" feeling. Apparently, this flu seemed to attack certain dinosaur species, and very few of its victims survive. I'm also assuming the night flower had antibiotic/healing properties strong enough to fight this disease.

Land Before Time Captions / Cera's least favorite song

Escape AKA The Pina Colada song.  :x

Cera: Come on, Rupert, enough! I do not like pina coladas -- whatever those are -- or getting caught in the rain!  I hate 70s schlock pop junk!

Sound Off! / Do you like 60s music?
« on: April 15, 2013, 02:44:05 PM »
Which 60s music? Motown, Stax, Phil Spector, Carole King, British invasion, acid rock, the flowering of Nashville, the beginnings of Philly soul, James Brown, Aretha, Latin jazz...I love and listen to all of it.  :D

Character Discussion / The old One
« on: April 14, 2013, 04:30:31 PM »
Been reading this thread and I mostly agree with the opinions expressed. The Old One could have been an interesting character, and she seemed on her way, but once again the LBT writers didn't delve deep enough. Almost every set-in-her ways Victorian matriarch -- e.g.,  Downton Abbey's Violet Crawley, Upstairs Downstairs' Lady Southwold, Little Women's Aunt March, and so on -- has some likeable qualities. Even Disney's Dinosaur's elderly characters had spunk and dignity, that film's few saving
graces.

Re-watching Land of Mists now just to wish the Old One had Maggie Smith's Violet Crawley's witty repartee.

Character Discussion / Sue
« on: April 04, 2013, 07:10:17 PM »
That's another thing. I wished the interaction between Sue and her ultrasaurus boyfriend had been expanded. When I heard that deep baritone, "No, problem, little lady," I kept wishing for more scenes with this guy -- talking! ;)
Not only did the LBT 10 writers rob us of Sue singing but we never learned her beau's name.

I still laugh at the "tar monster" scene. And Cera's doing all these well-timed pratfalls. Classic slapstick!  :lol
