1988 Theatrical Release / So, with all the Disney remakes doing well.
« on: October 22, 2019, 07:44:41 PM »
More or less... Would you accept a "Land Before Time" remake if they could do it well? I know I made a topic about this a long time ago where I was much, much more cynical about it, but its 2019 now, and... LBT is basically history, and I am not okay with that.

The Fridge / Hey, anybody know if Nick's okay?

I've had an ongoing PM conversation with him since pretty much this site was revamped the second time, but he hasn't answered my latest PMs.

Silver Screen / I wish there were more dinosaur movies.
« on: August 10, 2019, 11:44:49 PM »
I mean, big budget blockbuster ones. After the original "Jurassic Park", I remember hoping for more to come, but it never did. And then I got my hopes up again after "Jurassic World," thinking that since special effects have evolved so much, more dinosaur movies to cash in on its success would be a shoe-in at this point. Alas, it seems the JP/JW and Land Before Time series still remains the primary source of fictionalized dinosaur entertainment.

Any time Marvel Studios wanted to get a "Savage Land" movie off the ground, that'd be great. I'd even take a "Turok" movie at this point.

Now this is interesting, a superhero horror movie. What if a child who fell from the stars instead of becoming a hero, became like Michael Meyers or Jason.

Brain Food / GUESS WHAT MOVIE!
« on: November 11, 2018, 08:44:44 PM »
The roles are simple: Guess the movie correctly and you get to take the next turnt to have us guess the movie you're describing.

It's about a man whose wife is brutally murdered and his son is left physically disabled. In a twisted turn of events, his son is then abducted and the dad has to track and chase the kidnapper thousands of miles with the help of a mentally disabled woman.

The Fridge / Looking for a children's story from my early childhood.
« on: November 07, 2018, 11:02:48 PM »
Okay, there's a children's story that I've been trying to find for years, and I know it exists, because I had an audioplay version of it on cassette. Okay, this is going to be very trippy, so bear with me...

The main character is a wimpy, short little man who laments being so wimpy and short. He has a wife and two sons. One day, he and his sons were away from their home in town or something when he encountered a magician with a white beast, which is never adequately described. Somehow, the magician tricks them into something, and the wimpy short man's sons turn to pumpkin-headed people. I think that the magician might have tricked them into eating something that caused it... I think. Oh, it gets weirder from here.

Somehow, wimpy dude and his now pumpkin-kin sons end up in the magician's... property? All I know is that the place is full of other kids who have been turned into pumpkin-headed people. They basically spend all day carving their pumpkin-heads open and harvesting the seeds they pick out from inside. I think the sons and other kids go along with it because they're under some kind of mind control spell from the magician, but I don't remember why he needed to turn them into pumpkin-headed kids or why he needs them to pick the seeds out of their own heads, and... Told you this was gonna get weirder.

And for some reason the wimpy guy is there, I don't remember why. I think maybe the magician was stringing him along by making him do hard labor for him in exchange for turning his boys back into regular boys because that makes the most sense to my adult mind. Of course, this story stopped making sense the instant they came across the magician, so...

Anyway, wimpy guy ends up trapped in a cave with the magician's pet giant and he sings a sad song about being a sad, wimpy little guy. I think his sons somehow came to and they distracted the giant so their dad could escape and they end up on the run from the magician and his white beast... I think.

I don't remember how the story gets resolved, but the kids turn back to normal and the magician and his white monster somehow end up getting turned pumpkin-heads, themselves.

And that is the gist of the story I can't remember. If anyone has... any... idea what this was called, please tell me.

The Fridge / EU Article 13
« on: May 31, 2018, 07:00:07 PM »
https://saveyourinternet.eu/#newmode-embed-4348-4465

"Don't let the EU break our Internet - tell your MEP to save it before 20 June

On 20-21 June, the European Parliament will vote on the Copyright Directive. Members of the parliament are the only ones that can stand in the way of bad copyright legislation. Tell them you need them to protect your Internet against surveillance and censorship machines!

How is the Internet awesome?

The Internet lets us access more information than ever before, find a rich diversity of news sources, keep in touch with our friends, find new music and videos, and more. Why is it so awesome? Because what you see and do online is up to *you* not some big business or bureaucrat.

How is it threatened?

The European Commission and the Council want to destroy the Internet as we know it and allow big companies to control what we see and do online. Should Article 13 of the Copyright Directive proposal be adopted, it will impose widespread censorship of all the content you share online. The European Parliament is the only one that can step in and Save your Internet.

What can I do?

Contact Members of the European Parliament before 20 June and tell them you need copyright laws that protect your Internet, an Internet where you can share news and culture with your friends and family, where you can expect to be treated fairly and where your rights as EU citizens are protected."

Just some signal boosting here.

Silver Screen / Avengers: Infinity War

This film is currently making ALL the money, and already has about $730 million world wide, and will possibly be what topples Titanic and Avatar from the #1 box office spots (Thank God). And somehow no one here is talking about this?

The Written Word / Poems
« on: February 05, 2018, 10:17:33 PM »
As an entry point into writing poetry, I tried to use another poem as a direct source of inspiration. Let me know how I did. I've already burned through a few drafts trying to get it ready.

My Inspiration:

Adrienne Rich, "Aunt Jennifer's Tigers"

Aunt Jennifer's tigers prance across a screen,
Bright topaz denizens of a world of green.
They do not fear the men beneath the tree;
They pace in sleek chivalric certainty.

Aunt Jennifer's finger fluttering through her wool
Find even the ivory needle hard to pull.
The massive weight of Uncle's wedding band
Sits heavily upon Aunt Jennifer's hand.

When Aunt is dead, her terrified hands will lie
Still ringed with ordeals she was mastered by.
The tigers in the panel that she made
Will go on prancing, proud and unafraid.

My imitation:

Old Leo’s Lion,
By WR

Old Leo’s Lion stands bold and proud,
A tan figure roaring loud.
His call goes out for man or beast,
Be they from the west or the east.

Old Leo’s chisel shakes in his grip,
Age making his steadiness dip.
The weeds of a life unfulfilled,
Tangle him like a garden untilled.

Old Leo’s time is short, but he is beyond caring,
All his life he was never daring.
The oak lion stands proud, a work finally completed,
Still daring and graceful after Leo’s life is depleted.

How'd I do?

Gamers Zone / The SNES Classic/Mini

I got this baby for Christmas and so I'm loving the heck out of it even though I wish it had more games on it and had the capacity for more games to be added. So far I'm loving the heck out of Secret of Mana, which I never got to play before. Wow, people weren't kidding when they say the Mana series took a nosedive into mediocrity.

Oregon Now Pumps Its Own Gas

"Just the thought of pumping their own gas apparently has some Oregonians losing their minds.
Thanks to a new law that took effect Monday, residents in some rural Oregon counties will soon be allowed to pump their own gas. Aside from that exception, Oregon and New Jersey are the only states that do not allow drivers to fill up their own tanks.
Oregon House Bill 2482 was passed in May and allows people living in Oregon counties with 40,000 residents or less to pump their own petrol.
But it wasn't until Medford, Oregon, television station KTVL posted about the new law on social media that the rest of the country learned just how freaked out some Oregonians are at the mere thought of pumping gas.

Here's a sampling of the panicked comments:

Others had some fun in the comments after the Dec. 29 post went viral:

Some gas station managers told The Bend Bulletin that employees would continue delivering the same full-service treatment that customers have come to expect since self-service gas was banned in 1951.
"Our regular, longtime customers love coming here and talking to us while we pump their gas," Shelby Perkins, a cashier at a 76 gas station in Prineville, told the paper.
Perkins told the Bulletin it was quite possible that the local drivers had no idea how to use a gas pump.
Other managers said they would have employees on hand to teach drivers how to pump their gas."

:lol  :lol  :lol  :lol  :lol  The fact this is a thing is both sad and hilarious. I don't know whether to cry or laugh.
