At long last, the script for the original, raw, uncut TLBT is available for all to see! :wow :wow :wow
Just go here (https://drive.google.com/file/d/194ERbXiImSdBJJRfn96ZVxJS0Txsr04T/view) to view the entire thing! :D
edit June 2019: that link no longer works, go here (https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/landbeforetime/images/0/0c/SCRIPT_Land_Before_Time%2C_The_%281988%29.pdf/revision/latest?cb=20190608213952) instead for the new .pdf link from the LBT wikia, this will be here virtually forever
Edit by Mumbling: here's the transcribed script, a tad easier to read/search: https://docs.google.com/document/d/12uQ-hzyvk-s-VIbr6MfoX3AaA6rNwsZTEy09zk86Zxo/
The script is from the May 1987 revision and contains never-before-seen scenes of the film and dialogue. We learned that Petrie was originally going to communicate by whistling, that Cera was going to have an even more angry side than in the movie, among many other new discoveries. Due to the sheer amount of info that this script contains, it's going to take a very long time to discuss every change and make them known to others. This may be the biggest news of the decade concerning the deleted scenes (unless you count the Sharptooth storyboards being more major than this), so I want to make it feel like it was worth it for Sneak to purchase it :yes
After the result of:
1. Sneak buying it on Scriptfly for $14.95 US
2. Which I found out about the script being on Scriptfly by asking the user "havesomedisney" on Tumblr (he had the script, he posted bits of it there so I definitely wanted to see the full script for myself)
3. Which I found the Tumblr blog from asking fellow LBT wiki user "Disneysaurus" about where he got the script images he uploaded
4. As he uploaded the script bits to the wiki and didn't post them anywhere, so I asked him where he got them and he told me the Tumblr blog he found them on
This script is finally available to view as a PDF file! While it isn't the absolute greatest news that I could give (the actual scenes themselves, fully animated, would be the biggest news of all) this is one step closer to experiencing the original uncut film in its glory.
I made a topic specifically for the script to specifically discuss the script itself as this is the second-biggest news about the deleted scenes that we could possibly get. So a big question to begin this topic for the script would be; what do you think is the most major discovery that is contained in this script that we were not aware of of before? :)
-
I haven't had the chance to look at the script but I just want to give a huge shout out to Sneak for biting the bullet and purchasing the script and to you Hypno for putting the work in to find it. I can't forget about Sovereign either as he wrote the letter for you to use.
Anyways, you guys rock! :)littlefoot
-
I can't forget about Sovereign either as he wrote the letter for you to use.
Thanks for remembering me, too. :D Yes, this was a really amazing find as I said on the other thread. For me, the most interesting thing in the script was the original flow of the later part of the film and the exact way the sequence surrounding Littlefoot and Cera's fight was originally going to work. Those parts would have been much darker than what we have today and much more interesting and logical, most likely.
-
Let's not forget main thing: it's possibly NOT original script, as stated on ScriptFly site itself, it's one of later versions.
So, since work at cartoon was started one year before, and script doesn't contain some known storyboards, as I understand... It's not the most original or uncut version of movie. :D
But yeah, it's amazing find, thanks to that Disney guy! :D
-
Ah brilliant! I was hoping someday the original script would show up, a good way to finally find out how some of the deleted scenes went.
-
I think I'm going to review every single page in the near future to help break everything down for everyone in the near future :)
-
This would be amazing! :D
-
Nice find. I read the excerpts and the summary of what the script contained on Tumblr and it would have done well to elaborate on the movie’s themes and characters points.
However, if there’s one thing I prefer in the final cut rather than this version, it is Littlefoot’s decision to kill Sharptooth. In the script, he is guilty about them accidentally leading Sharptooth to the Great Valley and wants to kill him to protect both the gang and the valley. In the final cut, Littlefoot immediately saying ”Let’s get rid of him once and for all!” and the way he delivers his lines thereafter hold a hint he’s also jumping at the opportunity to have some vengeance. The twisted little part of me can’t help but find that appealing and see it as a potential seed to corrupt him in fanfic (I initially thought the script portrayed Littlefoot as morally conflicted about killing someone but decided it’s the right thing to do. Yet going back to the post, it seems I misread and/or misremembered that.)
-
Absolutely support this!
Honestly, despite all of his good character, thoughts, intentions, viewing of sharpteeth's nature, etc, love to see how Littlefoot expresses how he wants not to only protect newfound valley from some sharpteeth who are about to enter the valley, but also to, ahem, literally get rid of one sharptooth who brought him a huge pain and who can continue to do it again. And I don't think it's OOC or "pure corruption" or something! Not here, since he's still 5 years old child who ended in hostile environment and tough situation for children of his age! He can act like this or say something rude in the most tense moments, like when he told to not say stupid stories about Sharptooth, when he fought Cera or when he screamed and left the rest of the gang when they prefered to go other way.
So, in my vision, I would like to see mix of both script's and movie's versions, when Littlefoot explains why they need to stop Sharptooth now by themselves, and then angrily adds a sentence about killing him for good once and for all.
And lol, I even wanted to write his thoughts in fics, what he actually thought in that scene. Then how he panicked and thought he has just led his friends to their death because of his plan to make personal revenge in the most part of his plan, when Sharptooth jumped at the cliff with stone that rejected to move, and now they're all will die because of him. And then, after talking with his grandparents, remembering Rooter's words, and selfthinking, he changes, and this change was a reason why he looked at newborn Chomper in that new way.
-
I didn’t mean that his vengeful reaction indicates anything unusual about him. The hostile circumstances that shaped his kill decision make sense (Though even in the original script, the gang was still oddly quick to agree with killing someone, more questioning on the hows rather than moral quandaries of it. Eh, maybe the target being their sharptooth stalker made it easier). I meant more that it could be something for him to angst about or be a thing some other villain can use to try to corrupt him.
Your ideal about merging both versions of this scene is interesting. It would’ve been good to have more of an arc about this hint for wanting vengeance might actually endanger others.
Looking at other deleted scenes…this was covered before but I do like seeing Cera’s exact dialogue when she refuses to have Spike come along, which is “All spiketails can do is eat and burp.” Of course, this could still have happened but off-screen. It makes a nice contrast to later in their lives where, though she does find him annoying and underestimates him, she values him as a friend. It’s one of those under-focused bonds I find some interest in.
-
This came as a big surprise! It's amazing to see how different the movie would have been! I found the ending especially heartwarming with their parents' odd reaction to how they all became friends. I wish they had included that.
-
Holy crap!
-
Neat
-
nice short reaction comments. XD
-
This is a pretty nice find! It's incredible to me that something can be found 30 years later like this.
-
Well I'll be! We finally can see what the original cut was going to be like! All Land Before Time fans, raise your hands in celebration of this wonderful find! Hurrah!
-
One difference I'm already seeing is that Littlefoot is called "Thunderfoot."
-
One difference I'm already seeing is that Littlefoot is called "Thunderfoot."
Here’s the deal with that: Universal was going to call him Thunderfoot, but then at the last minute, they found out that there was a dinosaur in a children’s book with that name, so they decided to call him Littlefoot instead. I personally think Littlefoot has a better ring to it, even though Thunderfoot will make more sense when he grows up.
-
I see. Thank you.
-
You’re welcome. It’s nice to see you back, by the way.

Same here. It takes a lot of dedication to dig up fossils like this (pun intended).

Thanks for bringing that connection up even if we've seen that scene before. :) In any case, it's good to see you again. You and your efforts to search for the uncut film were one of the things that raised my interest to this site in the first place. ^^spike

Yeah still thinking about it, almost ten years since I wandered here :D It's good to see GoF going strong and this is a really nice discovery. Malte still around here?
The outcut scenes thread original post has died out with all the pics gone. I think it would deserve to be revived a bit with all the later discovered cels and footage gathered in one post, we even have the script now for accurate description of the scenes.

Malte has mostly become a silent observer here. He is now into My Little Pony.

I read through that thread a while back and managed to get a number of images from it (before the Photobucket crap happened) and uploaded some of them to the LBT wiki. There's a user on there that I also found out was secretly uploading never-befores-seen cels on there since 2014. There's one of Littlefoot's mother in pain and it fits in the script actually.
As for putting all the scenes and cels into one post would be a massive undetaking at this point, something that would be considered a major project myself. Summer is coming up soon so I might do it. I'll have a lot more free time and the motivation to spend the countless hours working on putting together a massive, user-friendly review/guide which talks about the script, cels, storyboards and deleted scenes in detail.

Wow, if that scene made it into the movie, I probably would've been a been mortified as a kid.
Or maybe not.

Did you get the berry-scene? It's also in the script. I had only these still stored, might as well put them up here:

There was one more pic of this waterfall scene in malte's post.

The only image on the wiki of the Berry scene is the one cel with Ducky holding the berries with the others. So that means there's nothing on the wiki's unused images that are new for that particular scene.
Also, as for the images you linked, they are on the LBT wiki but I believe I'm the one who added them. They were on the Lost Media Archive wiki and so I downloaded them from there and uploaded them to the LBT wiki.
-
Holy crap, it's a good thing I downloaded all of the pages and uploaded all the images last week, because the link in the OP doesn't work anymore...!
-
yep, I intentionally deleted it couple days ago after I read discussions and wiki.
Everyone who wanted would download it already. :bestsharptooth

I was a bit disappointed, considering that I just found out about this thread in the morning and took an interest in it. But hey, at least the script is already on the LBT wiki, as said by Hypno. Since nobody has posted the direct link to the PDF, I'll do everyone a favor and do it here (https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/landbeforetime/images/0/0c/SCRIPT_Land_Before_Time%2C_The_%281988%29.pdf/revision/latest?cb=20190608213952). I can imagine that some others were crushed to find out the Google Drive link was no longer working, and I was one of them.
-
I had the same shock and was happy I had saved it to my computer. Glad to know it was removed for a logical reason :)
As I mentioned on the Discord channel I am currently copying the script over to a Google document so that it can be more easily read/searched. Link is here for now: https://docs.google.com/document/d/12uQ-hzyvk-s-VIbr6MfoX3AaA6rNwsZTEy09zk86Zxo/edit?usp=sharing
-
I'm curious, what was the logical reasoning for the removal of the link based on the discussions you read?
I'm also going to point out that on the LBT wiki, I saw a thread (https://landbeforetime.fandom.com/wiki/Thread:103821) with an actual short clip of Littlefoot and Cera being swept away by the mud and colliding with Sharptooth's foot. There's also a 19 second audio clip (https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/landbeforetime/images/c/c8/Sharptooth_And_The_Earthquake_%28Cut_music_section%29.ogg/revision/latest?cb=20190609025746) of the music that played for the deleted scene. This was only posted very recently, so come check it out if you're interested. :)

Awesome. Thanks for putting the script back up. This pleases me. :cerahappy
-
^Just to clarify, the PDF file was already uploaded to the LBT wiki, and I only posted the direct link to the PDF here for more convenience. So I didn't really put the script back up per se. I wouldn't have had the script saved on my computer to upload again anyway if I only just found out about the thread on the day of its deletion, would I? :P
But, you're welcome anyway. :)
-
I see. Well all the same, I only knew about the link to the script that was on Sneak's drive, so it's still thanks to you that I discovered the new link. I originally didn't know that the PDF had already been uploaded to the LBT wiki.

That thread there is actually by me :lol I made it yesterday to show my friend NanoLancensis (known as Nanotyrannus on the GoF) what we have as of 2019. That thread showcasing a lost scene is just a taste of what is to come when I do my big analysis that I've mentioned I was going to do a while ago.
-
@Hypno: Please keep us updated when your analysis comes. I would love to see it.
-
^I second that.
-
That thread there is actually by me :lol
Just to clarify, I knew that thread was made by you. I just shared the thread here, directing it to anyone else who happens to be interested in something like original uncut LBT footage. I knew many people were excited about something like that, so I decided to pass the information along. :)
But anyways, I'm also intrigued just like Stardust and Anagnos about your big analysis that's coming very soon. Surely it will reveal much more about the lost footage than just the preview in the thread, correct? :)
-
Thanks so much for making this available!! :)littlefoot I gotta say, when I first started reading , I thought it was barely going to be any different than the final version, but reading it all the way through, there are definitely some notable differences. Here are my thoughts!
I actually prefer the final version of the movie, and my biggest reason for that is the difference in Cera's characterization. First, I noticed this script didn't have her parrot her dad's line, "Threehorns never play with longnecks." That moment emphasized that Cera, early in the film, had been raised to become a mini version of her father, prejudices and all. Although we can still tell that about Cera in this earlier script, the film version that has her word-for-word repeat the line particularly accentuates that she's the product of her upbringing (and is probably why "Threehorns never play with longnecks!" is such a memorable line in the first place). Second, I think Cera's overall development arc was done better in the movie. The moment where she goes to cry by herself, which showed the vulnerability she'd been hiding under her anger, was absent from the script. The Cera of the script has a lesser range of emotions altogether. She's almost purely aggressive up until the moment where she comes to save the day in the Sharptooth trap scene, and that made it feel like a pretty sudden turnaround in my opinion.
I also want to bring up the name Thunderfoot. It wasn't news to me that Thunderfoot was Littlefoot's original name, since I'd seen that on a wiki page before. However, I had never thought much about it before reading this script--but seeing it about five times or so on every page of this sure forced me to think about it. Boy, am I glad another dinosaur character had already taken this name! The character types my head conjures up from the names "Thunderfoot" and "Littlefoot" are polar opposites. Littlefoot sounds like a fitting name for a wide-eyed, scrappy young dinosaur, while Thunderfoot gives me the image of a big, strong, maybe even brutish character. Yeah, Thunderfoot would make more sense once the character grows up, but seeing as how we've had fourteen movies now and no one looks like they've aged one day, I don't think there's any danger of Littlefoot outgrowing his name at this rate! :lol
Also...Petrie. The way he was written in this script just leaves me...confused. So he was just going to whistle, not talk, all through the movie? At first, I was thinking the writers were probably just trying to suggest that he was younger than his friends and couldn't talk yet, but in the valley scene, it turns out his mother also just whistles. And I wonder what the purpose was for their "words" being written in parentheses after each whistle. Was that just put there for reference to make writing dialogue between Petrie and the other characters easier? Or was it going to be shown on subtitles or something? Then there's the matter of Petrie's grammar. In the movie, it came across as being just a childlike quirk of his, but this script gives his mom the same grammar problem. I guess in addition to whistling instead of talking, all flyers also have poor grammar. It's like they're supposed to be dumber, more animal-like creatures than the dinosaurs, a scenario which (pun alert) doesn't quite fly with me.
I also prefer Littlefoot's first look at the valley being saved for the very end of the movie. I liked him being able to have that moment with his friends standing right beside him, not with him having to go back and find them. By having the kids run down into the valley immediately after seeing it for the first time, the movie scene was the Gang's singular moment of joyful triumph, the crowning glory waiting at the end of their journey. No one character should have been able to have that moment alone--it needed to be saved until they'd all completed their journey so they could take it in side by side. Maybe nostalgia is blinding me on this part, though...
To wrap this up, I really (really!!) enjoy seeing material like this from behind the scenes of my favorite movies. In the end, though, I'm almost always glad that the final version became what it did. There's a reason movie scripts get revised. What we're looking at here was a work in progress, not some truer, purer version of LBT that was smothered by the one we got. Not to offend anyone who wishes this would've become the final movie, but I prefer the original LBT just the way it is. :smile
Well, on to that Secret of Saurus Rock script now! :SmugSpike

WHERE IS VHS COPY OF UNCUT LBT??????????????? TELL ME!!!!!!!!
I’ve seen things about the supposed Finnish vhs of the uncut version and I’ve mostly accepted that as fact, but is that something that actually exists? I apologize if this has been brought up before, but I’m just not sure. :duckyworried

Yes!
It is there!!
Everyone should know!!!
We should gather everyone to finally find it!!!
FINLAND!!! WE ARE COMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
lol
actually, I dunno. I heard this rumor a looooong time ago (Finland became my personal meme here in this community XD), and I hope it is truth, because if it is truth, there IS uncut LBT somewhere in the world, and potentially can be found, and hope is everything we need right now... But who knows? It can be anywhere in the world.
but still...
*looks at Sovereign and Anagnos, suspiciously...*

When reading through the script, it's interesting to find all the little changes that were made to various important scenes. Like where Littlefoot first meets Ducky. In the original script, Littlefoot seems a little bit more annoyed, a little more standoffish. He ignores Ducky at first, then tells her angrily that "Longnecks don't talk to... whatever you are." He frowns when Ducky pretends to be a longneck, then picks up his treestar and leaves. When she follows him, he looks back disdainfully, but eventually gives in when Ducky tells him about how she lost her family.
In the final version, Littlefoot is kinder. He says mostly the same things, but the delivery is softer and he seems less annoyed than just sad and apathetic. He doesn't ignore her intentionally, he's so deeply sunk into his world, his own sorrows. But when Ducky tries to make herself look like a longneck, he rolls his eyes and smiles. He stays and listen as Ducky tells him how she lost her family, and then immediately asks if she wants to tag along.
I remember finding more other subtle differences here and there between the versions (read through the script and had the movie up on the other monitor so I could compare them as it were!)
Anyway, it's kinda cool to see them making minor changes here and there to make the characters more consistent. In Littlefoot's case, even when he's mourning his mother, he's never really mean. He's never selfish. Kindness and friendship comes natural to him.

if you want to watch some of the footage theres a channel called GreatBeast455 he uploaded a few 5 second clips if you want to see them

These clips are from LBT early advertisements. They're on youtube too, so you can watch these clips in more good quality and with sound. ;)

@Sneak: By the way, I'm curious about your purchase of this LBT 1 uncut script that you bought on Scriptfly for $14.95.
Congrats on finding a script that turned out to be real, despite how cheap the price was. But anyway, I'm pretty surprised that, even up to this day, they are still selling that same script that you bought all the way back 2018, literally still for the same price of $14.95.
So-o-o that begs the question for Mo-o-o. Was this uncut script never really "rare" or "exclusive" to begin with if it were selling for that cheap in the first place?
After a bit of research and digging around, I found out that this uncut LBT 1 script from May 1987 may have been available online much earlier than y-o-ou think. Well actually, this was certainly available earlier than the actual existence of the Gang of Five forum, as matter of fact! For example, as shown in this (https://web.archive.org/web/20011120051738/http://scriptfly.com/screenplays/index.shtml) archived webpage from Nov 20, 2001. This was the earliest archived iteration of the Scriptfly Screenplays index page. Notice the "New Arrival" section on that webpage, listing the most recent scripts that they have received for whatever movie listed. The only way to know for sure when this uncut LBT 1 script was available for purchase on Scriptfly was to find an archived date of the site with "Land Before Time" listed in the new arrival section.
I could not find such page. However, this next link is from April 9th, 2002 (https://web.archive.org/web/20020409103635/http://www.scriptfly.com/screenplays/a-m.html) and it shows a list of screenplays in alphabetical order from A-M only. If you scroll down to the "L" letter section, it clearly lists LAND BEFORE TIME, THE $15 on one of the lines. It doesn't indicate that it is the uncut LBT 1 script, but Mo-o-o have a go-o-od feeling that was what Scriptfly was selling at that time.
It kind of makes me imagine and speculate if this script could've been found online somewhere even earlier than Scriptfly but was just never archived/found. But yeah, Mo-o-o is quite glad that Scriptfly had been hosting the sale of this script for literally over two decades now. It would be a real shame if we hadn't found it before the site stopped selling it, or even worse, if it shut down.
-
:ChomperOhNo
Wow, I didn't know it was possibly posted decades ago.
Nice finding!
-
Yeah this happens sometimes in lost media like the Barnyard test pilot which was found on a VHS someone brought off of ebay this year. :Mo
-
I didn't know that either. Awesome discovery @ImpracticalDino.
:)petrie
-
Thank yo-o-ou Mu-u-ud Brothers! :Mo :wub
Yeah, this type of deep diving/discovery work really fascinates me. It really falls under the category of OSINT, or Open Source Intelligence. It's basically the art of researching and collecting vital data/information from publicly available outreaches. Web Archive is one of the huge facets of OSINT research, since quite a lot of history, ranging from books, media, but importantly in Cybersecurity, lots of websites that may have juicy information that used to be on the actual website in the past, but may no longer be hosted.
And yeah, finding out stuff like this really gives me a lot of hope in terms of being able to find and unravel other undiscovered original drafts for the LBT movies. If the LBT 1 script on Scriptfly was actually hosted for over two decades, and yet only discovered in 2018, something tells Mo-o-o-o that there is still much more out there than meets the eye...
Whether we find another by an obscure website, or by another antique Ebay seller randomly listing another LBT script, Mo-o-o-o is confident we'll be able to get most of the other scripts eventually. :smile
Yeah this happens sometimes in lost media like the Barnyard test pilot which was found on a VHS someone brought off of ebay this year. :Mo
VHS is a real treasure trove, alright... :petrieooohh
Love seeing the obscure/unique/lost footage that some person may have on a random VHS that they used to record some segment of a TV show or commercial break back in the day. It really gives you a glimpse of the past, which I usually find pretty interesting. :)
Some of my favorites can be old Christmas TV commericals, or for more specific examples, something like Nick Jr./Nick bumpers, or Nick Jr. face bumper segments.
Preservation is vital, and luckily the footage can easily be transferred to a digital medium, ensuring that it doesn't eventually degrade to complete static overtime. :DD :yes
