What's in a title?

The sequel to Madagascar (the Dreamworks film) is:

Madagascar 2: Escape 2 Africa

I kid you not. Maybe Gov. Palin isn't the only one confused about Africa.

Madagascar is an island on the east coast of Africa I believe, miles away. It's not connected to Africa though.

Madagascar is still part of the African continent same as Great Britain is part of Europe. The movie title as such does not confuse Africa for a country.

The title implies Madagascar is not part of Africa, or that Africa is a separate country. That's what makes the title unusual.

I can't quite follow that logic. Would then a movie titled "Germany" imply that Germany was not part of Europe? Would a movie titled "Minnesota" imply that Minnesota was not part of the United States? And if you don't think either why is it that you think so in case of Madagascar but not so in one of the other cases?

I don't find anything strange about the title "Madagascar 2: Escape 2 Africa". I mean, there is a difference between being on a small island covered in a jungle and being on a continent that has both jungle and deserts and is gigantic.

The point is the animals are already at Africa if they're on Madagascar.

That's why the title doesn't make sense. You don't escape to somwhere if you're already there.

The closest US comparison would be "Hawaii - Escape to the United States". Sounds kind of silly since Hawaii is part of the US. That's the logic.

Wouldn't the closest (and more sensible) equivalent be: "Hawaii - Escape from the United States"? I haven't seen the movie myself, so I don't know any details about their flight and may mistake something there. But I would interpret the line "Escape Africa" as escaping from rather than to Africa. In this case it would probably make sense.
